Missing Info[edit]

Shouldn't this article contain something about the great collapse? I would say it's quite important to the history of Winterhold. Jyggorath 02:21, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Of course, it's just that the lore namespace in general isn't a priority right now. Someone will get around to it eventually. You could get the ball rolling right now if you have the time and inclination. Minor Edits 02:46, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Lore:College of Winterhold[edit]

The {{split}} tag can't specify much, so I'm posting here to clarify that I've proposed the article to be split into Lore:Winterhold (city) and a new Lore:College of Winterhold. I'm unsure whether it should be a place page or a faction page, but the college definitely doesn't deserve to be stuck onto the city article like it is currently. --Legoless 19:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

I wanted to do this a while back, but I think I was being too cautious about making a new page at the time. A lot of links will need to be fixed, but I still think it would be more appropriate to split them. Also, there's no reason why we can't have both a place and faction page. If others think that only one should be created, I guess I would list it as a faction, because the College as a faction is much, much more relevant to the lore than the bricks and enchantments of the campus. I agree that it would be good split up, but I think the extra detail is nice for Winterhold, especially mention of the college. BUT College of Winterhold should DEFINITELY have it's own article, and I'm surprised if it doesn't already. As far as the Winterhold page goes, I propose give a smaller, paragraph-long version of the College if too worried it hordes the page, or add more sections and detail about Winterhold in general, to balance it out. College of Winterhold should definitely have it's own lore page. Would be cool to have a Skyrim screenie of Winterhold on this page too. --Yal 22:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
I just want to say Yes to this. It's not like there aren't smaller articles than what would be left. The Silencer has spokenTalk 03:54, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
The College of Winterhold is expansive enough to stand on its own. Split them. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 15:47, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Date of the Great Collapse[edit]

What's the source for the claim that the Great Collapse was in 4E 122? The cited source for that sentence, On the Great Collapse, doesn't give a date. Minor Edits (talk) 23:33, 12 September 2012 (GMT)

Capital city[edit]

Many articles claim that Winterhold was the capital city of Skyrim / the seat of the High King of Skyrim at various periods in time, but every time the source (if there is any) is checked, the source doesn't say anything about Winterhold being the capital of Skyrim. The only exception I've found so far is Lore:Borgas, a High King who died in the Wild Hunt of 1E 369 and was said to be 'of Winterhold', but many of these references could simply mean he was born there, not necessarily that Winterhold was his residence or seat of government. There is no source claiming Winterhold as the capital of Skyrim / the High King's seat after 1E 369 (unless I missed something, in which case please correct me). Despite claims to the contrary, I've not found a single source stating that Winterhold was the capital until the Lore:Great Collapse of 4E 122. On the other hand, there are plenty of sources making clear that other cities served as capitals in the period in between. Several sources such as Lore:Olaf and the Dragon imply if not outright state that High King Lore:Olaf One-Eye (r. 1E 420 – 1E 452) resided in Whiterun, with Dragonsreach as his palace. Ever since the Skyrim Schism of 2E 431, Windhelm had been the capital of Eastern Skyrim and Solitude of Western Skyrim, with no indication where the capital was before that year. (Personally, I think it was Windhelm, as Freydis resided there. If there was dynastic continuity with her father Lore:People_L#Logrolf, he probably also ruled there. Svatr just so happened to be jarl of Solitude when he proclaimed himself High King. If Solitude was also the capital of Skyrim during the reign of Logrolf, we'd have to assume Freydis fled or was expelled from Solitude and set up a new capital in Windhelm, three assumptions we have no evidence for. Occam's razor dictates that the hypothesis making the fewest assumptions is to be favoured, so Windhelm probably was the capital of united Skyrim before 2E 431. Whatever the case, there is no reason to assume it was Winterhold instead). SkyrimScholar (talk) 12:45, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

You need sources, I got you my guy. NPCs in Winterhold say that it was the capital. Kraldar says "Winterhold may not look impressive, but it has a very rich history.", "Winterhold was once the capital of Skyrim, you know. Quite an honor." and Korir says "I don't care how many Colleges they build, or how much the sea swallows up. I'll outlast them all.", "You know Winterhold used to be the seat of power in Skyrim? Now it's a shell." Even the loading screens say "Once the capital of Skyrim, Winterhold has been all but abandoned in the last few hundred years." --Vincentius1 (talk) 13:20, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Correct, but when? It probably was until 1E 369, but there is no unambiguous evidence that it was the capital after that year. The Skyrim loading screen implies that it hasn't been the capital for hundreds of years before 4E 201 (so it already wasn't the capital anymore by the time of the Great Collapse in 4E 122), and Kraldar implies it lost the status of capital before the Oblivion Crisis (3E 433), and that the Great Collapse just made things worse. 'Once' could refer as far back as the First Era; nobody seems to be referring to a time less than a hundred years ago, and some implicitly say it was much longer ago.
