Offerings to the Spirits
"Like the old Deep Folk, the Nords seek to dig up the blood of the Reach. We've always known magic sleeps in these stones, but only a fool would break them. Our place is to listen to the song of the earth and the beating of the heart." —Shaman Ulvoch[1]

Shaman Ulvoch was a Reachfolk shaman and a spiritual leader of the Crow-Eye Clan during the Three Banners War, circa 2E 582.

History[edit]

"Magic is a word used by cowards who fear its power or fools who think they can control it. We are connected to the land. Nothing more, nothing less." —Shaman Ulvoch[2]

Little is known about Ulvoch's past. At some point, he became the Shaman of the Crow-Eye Clan and took Fialyn as his apprentice, after she petitioned for the position. Since then she assisted Ulvoch with every ritual and clan ceremony, listening and observing him and receiving teachings. As an apprentice, she was chosen as his successor after his death.[3] They were responsible for the sacred rites of the clan.[4]

One of the rituals he and his apprentice were responsible for was maintaining the protective wards designed to guard the village of Karthwasten. It was maintained through offerings to the spirits with which the clan was known to bargain with: their patron Nocturnal and other Daedra: Molag Bal, Spirit Queen Namira and Hircine.[2][3][5] It is unknown if he was born blind or lost sight at some point in the past, but as of 2E 582 he was sightless.[2]

During the Gray Host invasion of the Reach and western holds of Skyrim in 2E 582, Karthwasten was one of the targets of the attack. Thanks to the protective wards the village was not utterly destroyed, unlike the neighboring Nordic settlement of Karthwatch. Numerous inhabitants of the village were still affected by the harrowstorms and turned into harrowed, however.[3][6][7] In the same year, the village was visited by an outsider who was willing to aid locals with their problems related to the Gray Host activity in the region. Fialyn introduced the outsider to Ulvoch, who accepted their help and requested them to help Fialyn with the renewal of the wards. The outsider and Fialyn collected materials with a connection to Karthwasten and the surrounding countryside and offered them to the spirits. However, the final part of the ritual was disturbed by the Netherroot, a plant that was cultivated by the Gray Host in the Sanuarach Mine. After his apprentice and the outsider cleared the mines, the ritual was finished successfully and the wards restored.[3][2][5]

The village thrived once again and the outsider was named a Crow-Eye in spirit and a friend to the Clan.[3][2][5] Shaman Ulvoch attended the moot during which regional leaders Ard Caddach of the Reach, and Jarl Svana and King Jorunn of Skyrim signed the peace treaty between the Reach, Eastern Skyrim, and Western Skyrim.[8]
