Spear-Maiden Ranev
Race Nede Gender Female
Resided in Upper Craglorn, Hammerfell

Ranev was a mythical Nedic heroine that lived in the wilderlands of Craglorn, in what is now the province of Hammerfell. Known widely as Ranev the Coal-Eyed Wanderer,[1][2] she was a renowned warrior and skilled spear-maiden. Some of her exploits include her triumphant victory in the Autumn of Snakes[2] and her pilgrimage on the Gray Passage, where she earned the moniker Ranev the Favored of the Stars.[1]

History[edit]

Ranev's history is largely unknown. She was the cousin of Thelmyra the Oak and the most loved by King Irndarus.[1] The Autumn of Snakes was an event in ancient times when hundreds of large snakes emerged from the ground and devoured villages in great numbers until Ranev the Coal-Eyed Wanderer slew all of the serpents singlehandedly. Despite the fact that Nedic scholars were able to describe the event in detail as late as the Second Era, it became a legend and was considered apocryphal. It is believed that in institutes like the Illumination Academy ancient historians must have tried to explain old events to the best of their recollection and to be most faithful.[2]

One fateful moment, Ranev traveled to the Stone of Hosiven, where she discovered the Gray Menhir in the far west valley in Craglorn, at the base of the Dragontail Mountains. Impressed by its large stature, the spear-maiden saw text materialize across the stone tablet, bestowing her with a quest to seek out six virtues hewn into stones across Craglorn's upper tier and to face various dangerous monsters. Some of these places include Loth'Na Caverns and The Howling Sepulchers.[3] After completing her task, the virtues of the stars started singing inside her and she pledged to uphold these words until she died. After this time, she was called "Ranev the Favored of the Stars".[1]
