Maar Gan (also called Markgran Forest)[1] was a kwama-mining village in the ash wastes of Vvardenfell, found within the province of Morrowind. According to Tribunal mythology, the town was the site of a confrontation between Vivec and Mehrunes Dagon, where the warrior-poet taunted the daedric prince so he would throw a rock intended for the Dunmer at them instead. Since then, a shrine was built around the Magic Rock of Maar Gan and the town became a popular pilgrimage stop.[2]

History[edit]

"Here Mehrunes Dagon held this rock high above the Dunmer. Vivec taunted Mehrines [sic] Dagon so that Dagon threw the rock at Vivec instead of the people."
—Description found on the Magic Rock of Maar Gan

When the incident took place is unknown. Even though the settlement did not exist in 2E 582,[3] a location of the same name was a regular stop used by silt strider caravaneers.[4] As the story goes, Mehrunes Dagon threatened the Dunmer with a large rock but Vivec was able to convince him to redirect it to them. The site where it landed is where the Maar Gan Shrine is built. The Dremora, Anhaedra was bound to the rock and pilgrims traveled to the shrine to re-enact the event by hurling insults at him.[2]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Markgran Forest was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Nisain and had a rivalry with Verarchen Hall.[1] Markgran Forest was neighbored by several settlements, one of which included Stoneforest to the south.[5]

After Vvardenfell was opened to the rest of the Third Empire in 3E 417, House Redoran began to covet the land and captured much of northwestern Vvardenfell.[6] Maar Gan's main industry was eggmining and the closest mine to the town was the Hairat-Vassamsi Egg Mine found northwest of it. At the time, the town was often harassed by monsters coming over from the Ghostfence. In response, monster hunters traveled to the town and volunteered to protect it.[7] Maar Gan had a close call to destruction in 3E 424 when a swarm of blighted creatures nearly destroyed it. The Fighters Guild was called to defeat the monsters and were able to save the town. Councilor Athyn Sarethi even awarded one member named Percius Mercius with glass armor for their efforts.[8] When the Blight infected the kwama in Hairat-Vassamsi, an adventurer named Ravila Neryon attempted to remove it but died in the process and a memorial was dedicated to her in Maar Gan's outpost.[9]

Ever since the Redoran Council moved to Ald'ruhn, Maar Gan was governed by Councilor Remas Morvayn until his death at the hands of blight monsters. Since at least 3E 426, his position was filled by his wife, Brara Morvayn.[10][11] The ranking Redoran official in town was Kinsman Alds Baro, who also worked as the local blacksmith in the outpost.[12][13]

The exact fate of the town during the Red Year is unknown but all of Vvardenfell was caught in the destruction brought about by Red Mountain's eruption. A Redoran councilor began a relief effort to support outlying settlements that were hit the hardest.[14] How Maar Gan's holy shrine fared when the New Temple replaced the former one is also unknown as the New Temple denounces Tribunal teachings as misguided.[15]
