Dialogue[edit]

If you have not encountered the cultists sent to kill you, his dialogue is as follows:

"If you're looking for passage to Solstheim, you won't find a finer vessel than the Northern Maiden."

Solstheim?

"I'm surprised you've never heard of it."

"It's an island northeast of here. Has a small dark elf town called Raven Rock and a handful of Nords living in Skaal Village."

"People don't usually sail over there unless they have a particular reason. It can be a pretty rough place."

How much will it cost me?

"I'll give you a fair price. Not many people headed over there these days."

"If you ask me, I can't blame them. Things aren't what they used to be out there."

Why sail there at all then?
"They still pay me for supplies and passage and I can always use the coin."
"Still interested in heading over there?"
Yes. (250 gold)
"Casting off!"
No.
"Suit yourself. I'll be here if you change your mind."

Goodbye dialogue: "May the wind be at your back, friend."

If you return: "Seeking passage to Solstheim?"

Response 1: How long have you been a sea captain?

"I've been sailing the Northern Maiden across the Sea of Ghosts for nearly twenty years now."

Have you always served as a ferryman?
"Not at all. I used to fish the waters around Solstheim. Made a damn fine living at it, too."
"But over the years, the ash from Red Mountain poisoned the sea up there and the fishing became difficult."
"If it weren't for my supply runs to Raven Rock, I'd have likely sold my ship by now and moved back to Riften."

Response 2: I'd like to book passage to Solstheim.

"We sail as soon as I'm paid."

Here you go. (250 gold)
Actually, I'll come back later.

Upon departure: "Casting off!"

If you HAVE fought the cultists and retrieved the note off their corpse, it goes a little differently:

"If you're looking for passage to Solstheim, too bad. I'm not going back there anymore."

You have a third option available at the start to learn a little about Solstheim, similar to the one above: 3:Solstheim? Where's that?

"I'm surprised you've never heard of it."

"It's an island northeast of here. Has a small dark elf town called Raven Rock and a handful of Nords living in Skaal Village."

"But I'm not going back there. There's something wrong about that place."

Options #1 and #2 lead to a speech check:

1:Are you the captain of the Northern Maiden?

"Sure. Yeah. That's me. Why? Who sent you?"

I was attacked by some cultists who came here on your ship.
"Now hold on! That wasn't my fault ... I didn't know they were going to attack anybody. I don't even know how I got here."
How can you not know how you got here? You sailed here, right?
"It's hard to explain ... I remember those people with the masks coming on board, then ..."
"The next thing I remember, I was here and they were gone. That's not right, losing whole days like that."
"There's been something strange going on there for a while, but after this ... I'm done. I'm not going back to Solstheim."

2:What happened? Why won't you go back?

"It's hard to explain ... I remember those people with the masks coming on board, then ..."

"The next thing I remember, I was here and they were gone. That's not right, losing whole days like that."

"There's been something strange going on there for a while, but after this ... I'm done. I'm not going back to Solstheim."

Regardless which one you chose, you then move on to the speech check:

Yes, you are. You're taking me to Solstheim.
"Have you been listening to me? I'm not going back there."
I'll pay you double your usual rate. (Give 500 gold)
"Well ... a man's gotta make a living, after all. Fine. We'll cast off immediately."
You owe me. Those cultists you brought here tried to kill me. (Persuade)
Success:"Alright, you have a point. Taking you back to find out who sent them is the least I can do."
"Besides, maybe you can put a stop to whatever's going on over there. I owe them a bit of payback myself."
[Unfortunately, I've proved too awesome to fail the speech check.]
People are trying to kill me. I'm not taking no for an answer. (Intimidate)
"Hold on, now. I'm just a simple sailor. I never wanted to get mixed up in any of this. Alright, I'll take you. But we'll leave immediately."
I'll be back. (you can postpone the speech check if you wish)

Bug[edit]

When speaking to Gjalund Salt-Sage and taking passage back to skyrim, he will take your gold, but simply return you to solsthiem, leaving you in the same place you just spoke to him from. (Was using this option over fast travel because I was overencumbered trying to move all my things back to skyrim, and had no horse (no dawnguard on ps3 yet for Arvak) (Seventhsage (talk) 19:53, 21 February 2013 (GMT))

(minor edit - forgot to sign my post) (Seventhsage (talk) 19:53, 21 February 2013 (GMT))
Yeah, the bug is that he acts like fast travel, as opposed to travel like a carriage or horse. Meaning, if you're overencumbered, he won't work. Very inconvenient when trying to move all of your stuff off of Solstheim. - Anon--65.29.164.74 01:28, 14 October 2013 (GMT)
This bug has already been listed in the article. No further input about it is necessary, unless someone comes up with a workaround for PS3 or Xbox (other than dropping stuff to no longer be overencumbered). --Xyzzy Talk 02:27, 14 October 2013 (GMT)
