Location is Radiant[edit]

It actually seems that Torkild's location will be a radiant WE. Can anyone confirm this. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 01:28, 13 December 2012 (GMT)

I found Torkild on the coast, west of Damphall Mine. - obishawn@Hotmail.com (obishawn from GameFAQs) — Unsigned comment by 70.196.132.127 (talk) at 09:59 on 14 December 2012‎
I've now probably spent over 20 hours on Solstheim, going everywhere on foot (no fast traveling), and I have yet to encounter Torkild. Any additional detail on possible spawning locations would be VERY much appreciated. Username12345 (talk) 20:42, 18 December 2012 (GMT)
If you go along the cost north of Haknir's Shoal, I found him there, on top of an ebony vein. Was maybe 5 minute walk from haknirs shoal. You could try there. (I am assuming you have the quest already :P) Jeancey (talk) 20:51, 18 December 2012 (GMT)
Thanks for the input Jeancey. I looked where you said, and I also did some google searches and found other places where players have encountered him (all were random event locations, as one might expect). I proceeded to just fast travel from one location to the next until I finally found him on the coast (standing at the water's edge), west of Damphall Mine and southwest of the Water Stone. Hooray! For anyone else having trouble finding him, some other locations mentioned by other players were:
- On the coast, south of Bujold's Retreat and north of Nchardak;
- About midway between Raven Rock and the Abandoned Lodge;
- On the mountain path, slightly north of west of Haknir's Shoal and slightly east of north of Headwaters of Harstrad (I think this is the location you were referring to Jeancey).
No doubt there are other places he can be encountered as well, but it seems to me that if you just bounce around between a few known locations, he will eventually show (worked for me). Also, I don't know if it's necessary, but it's probably a good idea to have the quest active in your journal while you're searching. Username12345 (talk) 23:01, 19 December 2012 (GMT)
for what it's worth, I found him in the crevasse outside the entrance to Castle Karstaag Caverns — Unsigned comment by 98.234.84.23 (talk) at 21:22 on January 19, 2013
I too had trouble finding Torkild and started to wonder if maybe some active quest is interfering with him spawning. In Dragonborn:A New Debt Mogrul kept sending thugs after me so i finished that quest and started searching for Torkild again and found him after passing by, ~5 radiant WE locations i think, just west of Glacial Cave to be specific. Don't know if i got lucky or if that quest actually was stopping him from being able to spawn. Bigbumblebee11 (talk) 09:26, 12 February 2013 (GMT)

I was tired of looking for Torkild. I looked in several places, and then started traveling back and forth from Brujold's Retreat and Glacial Cave looking for him. I don't know if he is already dead or not, but I never found him after looking for an hour or so. This is one of the most frustrating quests I've done in Skyrim. I believe this is the first quest I've ever had to advance manually using the console. There isn't a reference ID, so I can't move myself to Torkild or vice-versa. I finally just used setstage to 15, which on the page says that you should tell Wulf the sad news. However, when set to 15, my objective was to search Torkild's body, not tell Wulf the sad news. I may not understand how the stages work, but that was irritating. I spawned the note into my inventory, that didn't advance it. I dropped the note and picked it up, that didn't advance it. Then I scrolled down and saw "quest objectives" and that 20 was "return to Wulf". It says stage 20 is an empty quest stage. I don't know exactly what that means, but I had to set the stage to 20 before it progressed and I was able to return to Wulf. I then gave him the note I spawned, and the quest completed and I received the skill bonuses from him. So, if you are frustrated with this quest like I was, and you wish to just complete it and get it out of your journal, you can probably do it the same way if you are on PC. Spawn the note into your inventory with "player.additem xx026562 1". Then "player.setstage dlc2wb01 15" followed by "player.setstage dlc2wb01 20" which will then have you return to Wulf. Return to Wulf and tell him the bad news and he'll give you the skill rewards. You may be able to skip setting stage to 15 and just go to 20, but I did 15 then 20 and it worked fine as far as I can tell. Ignotus (talk) 21:48, 2 April 2013 (GMT)

Reward?[edit]

The article says the reward for the quest is an increase to Archery, Heavy Armor, Block, One-Handed, and Two-Handed, but I didn't receive an increase to Two-Handed. Is Two-Handed listed by mistake? Username12345 (talk) 23:10, 19 December 2012 (GMT)

It seems strange to give boosts for all combat skills but Two-handed. I'd say that (barring a glitch), you out leveled the boost and it simply wasn't available to you as he couldn't teach you more. I could be wrong, I admit, but that seems like the most likely possibility here. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 23:47, 19 December 2012 (GMT)
Maybe so - my Two-Handed is at 96. On the other hand, Smithing is also a combat skill, and it's not included. Username12345 (talk) 02:08, 20 December 2012 (GMT)
Looking at the page history, the page was created without Two-handed listed as a reward in the Quest Header template. It was later edited to include Two-handed as part of the reward in the Detailed Walkthrough section. When tidying the page, I added it to the quest header because I saw it in the walkthrough and assumed it was simply forgotten. Now that I've seen this discussion, I added {{huh}} and {{VN}} tags to the page for further verification here. I'll see about testing it in-game myself in the next few days if no one gives input before then. — ABCface 23:14, 2 January 2013 (GMT)
Confirmation, of sorts, in that when I did the quest only one-handed increased to 99. My Block, Archery and Heavy armor skills are all at 100 so that explains them, but my two-handed is 52 and did not increase. Syko Conor (talk) 00:43, 8 February 2013 (GMT)
Thanks, I'll update the article accordingly. — ABCface 01:57, 8 February 2013 (GMT)
Here ONLY Block and Hard Armor increases. TwoHanded/OneHanded not and I've got ca. 20 in those skills. — Unsigned comment by 87.99.5.183 (talk) at 20:26 on 8 November 2013

Glacial Cave?[edit]

I'm a little skeptical about the Glacial Cave hint. In the CK, I see five potential spawn points:

  1. West of Damphall Mine.
  2. Where you find Haknir's treasure, south of Bristleback Cave.
  3. On the point southeast of Bujold's Retreat/due north of Nchardak.
  4. Just north of Raven Rock, northeast of where the path up from the mine lets out.
  5. One on the mainland (if you can say that of an island) northwest of Haknir's Shoal.

Of those, only the one near Haknir's Shoal is anywhere close to Glacial Cave, and it's quite a bit east-southeast of it, not west. For that matter, the closest spawn point of any kind (but not for Torkild, as far as I can see) that's west of Glacial Cave is well west of it, near the waterfalls. Schiffy's edit summary, however, implies that he found Torkild west of Glacial Cave near Castle Karstaag. Has anyone else had luck finding him at or near Glacial Cave? Robin Hood  (talk) 07:26, 7 April 2013 (GMT)

After finishing nearly all Dragonborn quests, I was still on the search for Torkild. I almost had a dozen encounters with Mogrul’s Thugs and all kinds of other world interactions, but I never encountered Torkild. Finally, after leaving Castle Karstaag Caverns, I found Torkild on the plateau above the coastline between Northshore Landing and Bristleback Cave where I took this screenshot (the NPC image seems to be taken in the same area). I loaded the save within Castle Karstaag Caverns many times, and I only had two different encounters on the plateau: either Torkild or three werebears in human form who transformed and attacked me. Then I loaded, turned left after leaving the cavern, and jumped down the waterfall, to the spawn point west of Glacial Cave. This led to the same results: either Torkild or the three werebears. I loaded again several times and checked the 5 potential spawn points, but Torkild did not show up there. --Holomay (talk) 13:07, 8 April 2013 (GMT)
Thanks for confirming that, Holomay. That gave me the info I needed to find what I'd missed previously. And indeed, the spawn point by the waterfall near Glacial Cave can spawn Torkild. The five I highlighted can do it, but it's not as likely as the three new locations I've found. The reason I didn't spot it before is because the Script Manager Event Node's search feature in the CK is a bit broken, and failed to find the second copy of the quest that spawns Torkild. With a lot of jumping between the five points I previously mentioned, I was eventually able to find Torkild, but there are up to 27 events that can spawn at those locations, compared to only 16 in the three new locations, making it much less likely that you'll find Torkild in one of them. Just for completeness, the three better choices are:
  1. The plateau you mentioned between Northshore Landing and Bristleback Cave.
  2. The area near the waterfall west of Glacial Cave.
  3. A section of path about half-way between Benkongerike and Haknir's Shoal.
Should we publish these on the page, since he seems to be so hard to find? Like you, I'd finished most of the quests without ever finding him, and it wasn't until I actively started doing CK research and forcing the issue by jumping to the less-likely spawn points that I finally did. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:49, 8 April 2013 (GMT)
Yes, I think it's a good idea to put these on the page as so many people have trouble finding Torkild. I wonder if the encounter with the three werebears – which is not listed on World Interactions – is somehow connected to the Filial Bonds quest and these spawn points. Before I found Torkild, I encountered werebears only at Snowclad Ruins. --Holomay (talk) 08:06, 9 April 2013 (GMT)

Small Bug[edit]

When the quest At the Summit of Apocrypha is active, Wulf does not have his usual dialog options and so this quest cannot be turned in. I thought all that searching had been a waste of time, so it might be worth noting it on the page if someone were to confirm this problem. 99.51.77.39 05:34, 12 July 2013 (GMT)

I've added a note. —Legoless (talk) 12:57, 12 July 2013 (GMT)
Thank you kindly. 99.51.77.39 07:48, 13 July 2013 (GMT)

Training[edit]

Just to be clear, the training rewards from this quest have nothing to do with the Master class 2-handed training that he gives to the player for a fee, right? In other words, this quest is not necessary in order to receive the 2-handed training? MidbossVyers (talk)

Pedantry[edit]

No talk page on this quest would be complete without pointing out that it should be called 'Fraternal Bonds', not 'Filial Bonds'. You're welcome. Nsa1001 (talk) 13:27, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
