Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Price of Failure[edit]

Speak to a Dark Slayer, who says:

"As you know, (player's guild title), there is no room for failure in the Dark Brotherhood. Brothers who fail us are targetted [sic] for an accounting. You will find and correct one such errant former member."

or

"It is a solemn duty, and not an entirely disagreeable one, to account agents of the Brotherhood who have failed us in an assignment. You are, I trust, free to take on such an assignment?"

Accept[edit]

The Dark Slayer goes on:

"Very good, (player's guild title). (Target's name), having learned something during (his/her) tenure in the Brotherhood, has wisely hidden (him/her)-self, but we have a contact in (building), a miserable (snitch's description), a snitch named (snitch's name). Talk to (him/her) and get (target's name)'s location. I will expect the accounting to be accomplished, and you to be back here in (time limit) days.

Decline[edit]

The Dark Slayer answers:

"Did I hear you correctly? (Player's guild title), I am grieved by your lack of cooperation with your brothers."

Killing the Killer[edit]

The snitch knows things

Head to your contact's building and enter it. Find and speak to the snitch, who will tell you:

"(Player's name)? I'm (snitch's name). The fish you're after has slipped the hook and is living a fancy life down in (dungeon). Just watch yourself, (player's race). (Target's name) knows how to fight and (he/she)'s scared."

Travel to the dungeon and find your target, an assassin, at one of the quest locations. When the assassin dies, you get a notification:

You have slain (target's name). The Brotherhood will be pleased.

Return to the Brotherhood to complete the quest.

Reward[edit]

When you report back, the Dark Slayer will say:

"Well done, (player's guild title). A good lesson for all who might fail the Brotherhood."

Reputation Gain/Loss[edit]

A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Dark Brotherhood +5
Dark Slayers +5
Associated factions +2

A failed quest results in a reputation loss according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Dark Brotherhood -2
Dark Slayers -2
Associated factions -1

(Allies/Enemies affiliations for listed factions are not considered in the tables)

Enemies[edit]

  • Random dungeon monsters
  • Quest Target: One Assassin

Notes[edit]

  • Like most other quests for the Dark Brotherhood, there is no specific reward beyond the loot found during the dungeon crawl.

Bugs[edit]

  • The town where you accept the quest is not named in your journal. If you don't keep track of this, you may not remember where this was.
    • DFQFIX corrects this oversight by adding the town to your log entry.

Additional Dialogue[edit]

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Target's name) is at large somewhere in (region), shaking like a willow, I wager."
  • "(Target's name) was a pretty decent assassin. Not good enough, it seems."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "Apparently you can beat the Brotherhood. Witness (target's name), for example."
  • "(Target's name) is really thumbing (his/her) nose at the Dark Brotherhood."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Target's name), they say (he/she) failed the Brotherhood once. And that was (his/her) reward."
  • "The Dark Brotherhood tolerates no failure. Look what happened to poor (target's name)."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "Hello, (player's name). How may I assist you who slew our errant brother?"

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "Let me understand this. I sent you to account a Assassin who failed the Brotherhood and ... you failed. And now, you want to chat. Unbelievable."
