Rename?[edit]

I think it would be more accurate if this page were named Books:Characters (The Infernal City) or some variation. It doesn't make sense right now because it assumes that this page covers all the characters in all the books. Obviously, it does not. Elliot (talk) 01:57, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

This is the result of moving namespace. I think making it a subpage of Books:The Infernal City, similar to what was originally done in lore space, would be the best course of action. --Legoless 02:00, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I am aware of how it got here. I don't really like the subpage idea because it can stand as its own article. A simple disambiguation page would be more beneficial. Elliot (talk) 02:03, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
I really don't like the idea of making it exclusively for TIC. One of the main reasons we moved the namespace was because the two novels need to use a lot of the same articles. Also, at the moment at least, there's not really any other books that would use a characters article. I think it's fine as is, but if it were renamed I'd prefer something more appropriate for both novels; perhaps Books:Novel Characters? --GKtalk2me 02:21, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

() A rename is obligatory now that we have another character page in this namespace for characters in a different book. I've got no preference for a new title, but something has to be decided on. Should we even split this page by book and have individual character lists for all future books, or keep this one together (as TIC and LOS are in the same series) and group future book characters together by series as well? Croaker (talk) 07:58, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

They should be subsets of the books, and I think every book page should come under a category for its book. Naming is a bit of an issue but as they're in the same namespace they'll just have to suffer the ignominy of <book name> Characters etc. There's no need to go with the disambiguation style of characters (book name) as they aren't being disambiguated from each other as such. Each book should probably stand on its own, but as TIC and LOS are the same story and could have come as one book with no loss in storytelling the should be grouped together, but not as "novel" characters because there could be too easily new novels in the future. I think Books:Greg Keyes Characters should work for now. —Legoless (talk) 14:14, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
How about Books:The Infernal City and Lord of Souls Characters? I'm not fond of it, but we don't have a name for the duology itself (unless we count the open-ended "An Elder Scrolls Novel" bit) and I'd rather go by book or series titles instead of authors. Croaker (talk) 09:22, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Best way to arrange this?[edit]

Right now, there's no rhyme or reason to the way the names are ordered on the page. I'm thinking of a couple ways to change this:

  • Keep this table, and put them in order of first mention (with main characters getting links to their pages above the table)
  • Get rid of this table, and just give each character a mini-header like the different places on the Books:The Infernal City/Umbriel page. I'm more tempted to do this (and just have a "main characters" and "other characters" section), but I don't know whether it should go in order of appearance or alphabetical order.

Could I get anyone else's thoughts on this? Alarra (talk) 22:33, 12 February 2014 (GMT)

That's a huge table... I'd go for the miniheaders, with them listed in alphabetical order, as we do on virtually every wiki page listing things or people. Not order of appearance or importance, as that could get messy, and it's not so easy to sort through when checking the page for info. Vely►t►e 05:03, 13 February 2014 (GMT)

Walls of text[edit]

For some of the major characters there are walls of text that are essentially summaries of the book. Should I separate the pages in terms of Appearance(Description of the characters), Background or Early Life, personality and role in the story? I'm willing to cleanup these pages. But if I can have someone to ask questions to I wouls be thankful.

This is the largest wiki project I've ever taken up.

As long as information isn't actually lost, re-arranging the articles in that manner seems fine. Few enough people have actually bothered to write the summaries in the first place. As far as I know, they were never even updated after Lord of Souls came out, which would be a more pressing issue than layout in my mind. —Legoless (talk) 18:10, 5 September 2014 (GMT)
