Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Robin Hood of Bruma[edit]

You can start this quest either by hearing rumors about Dar'taqto's thieving or by confronting the cat directly. If you speak to the Bruma Guard captain about criminals in Bruma and are able to pass a Hard Speech check, then they will tell you about Dar'taqto's approach to "cat burglary". The Khajiit steals from the undeserving and sells the items back to the poor at a discount. Alternatively, if Adius Vilius is still the guard captain after Service Rewarded is completed, you can pull in a favor as his friend and get him to open up without a Speech check. Either way, you'll be pointed in the cat's direction for more information.

You can also ask Dar'taqto directly about his activities. Provided you pass an Easy Speech check, will admit to "taking what is left unguarded, and reselling it to a more deserving owner. For a small finder's fee, of course". He also admits his cat burglary has gotten him in trouble with the law at times and asks for your help in resolving just one such matter.

Cedus Perusius of Ice-Wind Traders has accused the cat of stealing his pelts and reselling them at his stall; Dar'taqto strenuously denies the accusation and asks you to intercede with the captain of the Bruma Guard on his behalf. If you comment that helping a thief sounds morally dubious he retorts: "Regardless of this one's past - or his future - he has not stolen from the merchant. He does not steal from hard-working business owners. He steals from the pampered, the opulent and the unjust. So, in helping this one, you would, in fact, be hastening the course of justice, not jeopardizing it."

Find the guard captain and plead your case - although they are somewhat receptive, they insist they must uphold the law. Even when pressed about the lack of evidence against Dar'taqto, they note that they can't just drop the charges without giving Cedus any satisfaction. Provided you can pass an Average Speech check, you can reach a compromise where the charges will be dropped but Dar'taqto will be evicted of his residency in Bruma.

Return to Dar'taqto and give him the mixed news. While initially overjoyed, he will then wail in desperation at his destitution, before eventually hinting that you could become fast friends. If you agree to take him adventuring with you, he will be overjoyed and will become a follower. If you refuse, he will sulk that he will be forced to squat, beg and burgle on the streets of Bruma, but will still be available as a follower if you change your mind.

Bugs[edit]

  • In the event that Adius Vilius is taken by the Thalmor during Service Rewarded, Ereia Snow-Fist or Garceus Avoci will still be able to give you this quest, though they have no voice files for those lines. In addition, the quest stages and dialogue still mention Adius being the captain, and neither replacement has any further relevant dialogue, meaning that you cannot finish the quest. ?
  • There is also a missing voicefile when failing to persuade Dar'taqto to reveal his true occupation. ?

Notes[edit]

  • Completing this quest before starting Dartaqto bear pelts will cause the latter to be disabled.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage CYRBrumaFF05 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest CYRBrumaFF05.
