As usual, there are (or at least will be) always a large number of requests for hints and spoilers on lots of topics. This page will contain those various hints and spoilers I've compiled in some organized fashion. The various topics are sorted according to the date on which they were last updated or added.

General Enchanting Tips

Enchanting items can be one of the most exciting, and powerful features in the game. With the wide selection of spell effect and items to enchant, the possibilities are pratically endless.

How to Enchant

The easiest way is simple find the local mage guild or a NPC who enchants. Although you have a 100% success rate, the cost to enchant even the simplest of spells is ludicrusly high (for example, a 20 magnitude light spell for 30 sec costs in the 1000's of gold). The other method of enchanting requires no NPC, just drop a filled soul gem onto your character (like equipping it) to access the enchanting menu (you can recharge a magic item or enchant something). Using this method costs no gold, but there is a good chance to fail, losing the soul gem in the process (the item used to enchant is not destroyed on failure fortunately). Even with a maxed out Enchant skill and intelligence, you can only successfully enchant relatively low level powers (up to 30 enchant points with a moderately high failure rate).

Why Enchant?

Enchanted items are basically an extra reservoir of mana that you can use. Enchanted items slowly recharge allowing you to use them over and over again. Additionally, all enchanted items have a use that is based on your Enchant skill, not your spell schools skills. A high enchant skill will allow you to use enchanted items more times before their charge is exhausted. Enchanted items also never fail, unlike spells, and have a zero casting time, again unlike spells. Although you are limited to wearing only one Amulet, two Rings, etc... at a time, the game allows you to use any magical item that you have in your inventory, automatically equipping it for you when you use it. Overall, once your Enchant skill becomes high enough, you might never cast a spell again.

Spells and Spell Effects

There is possibly a confusion between a Spell and a Spell Effect. For instance, the Hearth Heal spell you can buy has the spell effect Restore Health. Once you buy this spell, or any other spell with the Restore Health effect, you can enchant and create spells using this effect (for any target type). Note that some effects have multiple types. For example the Fortify Attribute spell can increase any of your six attributes. If you buy a spell that increases strength, you will be able to use that effect to create a spell or item to increase endurance as well (you don't need to find six different spells for each attribute). Other effects have similar properties.

Enchanting Successfully

Find and buy a spell that fortifies an attribute. Any attribute will do as this will give you the 'Fortify Attribute' spell effect to let you create items with that power. Now, create a bunch of magical items that fortify intelligence (100/100 magnitude or as high as you can go), for a few seconds. High quality clothes, rings, and amulets work well for this. Make the first item for a few seconds. Now use that new item and create another item with the same effect for a little longer. Use both the newly enchanted items to boost your intelligence up even higher (the spell effects will stack). Casting the items using the longest duration first should give you enough time to use all your fortify items and have time to enchant (you enchant while in menu mode so the spells don't fade). The higher your intelligence gets, the more success you will have at creating higher level enchantments. If you boost your intelligence up to 1000, you can reliably create 80 enchantment point items. You can probably boost it higher for more success, and try creating items that boost your luck as well for more effect. Of course, any item or spell that increases your enchant skill is worth it as well.

You can also create potions with Alchemy that increase your Intelligence just as well as with enchanted items. The higher your Intelligence is, the more powerful potions are. Because of this, I enchanted some low-level Intelligence fortification items, so that I had a few hundred Intelligence points, then I made all of my potions. The great thing about this is that the effect lasts much longer than spells. I had a stack of about 20 potions that each fortified my Intelligence by 81 points for a few hundred seconds! That put me well over a thousand Intelligence. Then, using all my Intelligence Fortification items in series, I had over 1500 Intelligence! This allowed me to 100% sucessfully enchant any item, maxing out only at the number of enchantments available on the item.

Mining Souls

You need souls, lots of souls, for enchanting purposes. One of the quickest and easiest methods is to simply create a magical item that summons a creature for you as well as an item that casts soul trap. Yes, summoned creatures can be soul trapped just like regular ones (you can also loot a dead summoned creature if you are fast enough). Once you have these items, its a simple matter to summon, soul trap, kill, and repeat as often as you need. The items can be made relatively cheaply at a mages guild, and you can often find summoning and soul trap casting items in the world. Of course, you could cast the spells yourself, but that's way too difficult (wink). Note that you can cast soul trap on a dead corpse to get an unlimited amount of souls. So, if you find a Golden Saint, don't dispose of the corpse and you can come back to claim as many souls as you want (could be fixed in a future patch).

Constant Effect Enchantments

The type of spell at the bottom-left of the enchant window will only let you create constant-effect items if the quality of the soul gem is 80,000 gold or greater. This means that only a few soul trapped monsters in a Grand Soul Gem or Azura's Star will work. Golden Saints I know will allow you to create constant effect enchantments as will Ascended Sleepers, and some have said that Master Vampires will as well. Fortunately, you can summon Golden Saints (check the temple in Balmora for scrolls) so the number of constant effect items you can have is limited only by the number of Grand Soul Gems (don't know the exact number off-hand, but there's a least around 20 in the game, which should be enough for most people).

There's also a current bug in the game, if you select an 80k or higher soul gem, select constant effect, and then switch to a lower quality soul gem, the constant effect remains. Use it while you can, as there's a good chance this will be removed in a future patch.

Useful Enchantments

Theres lots of good ideas for item enchantments, but heres a few to get you going.

1. Light spell for those dark dungeons. A 10-20 magnitude on self for as long as you can is quite good.
2. Soul trapping item. Touch with a small range works well but some people like targettable soul traps.
3. Summoning monster. Get it to fight for you, kill for an easy soul, or to recharge your mana if you have the Atronach sigh (Ancestral Ghosts and Atronachs work well for this).
4. Water Breathing, Water Walking, and Swift Swim. A constant effect Water Breathing item is nice if you can make it.
5. Levitation. Even a small magnitude, small time spell is useful at getting to many areas.
6. Open spell for all those locks. Best way is to create a few items with the same min-max duration for opening a variety of lock levels (i.e., 20-20, 50-50, 75-75, etc..., as you are able to make them).
7. Constant effect invisibility and levitation items (higher end enchants).
8. Piercing flaming Soultrap Ring, Target Soultrap (3 seconds), 100% Weakness to Fire (3 seconds), 100 pts of Fire Dmg (3 seconds). This should kill just about anything if you can actually make it.
9. Calm Humanoid at Range for 10 seconds item. Useful for stopping people from attacking for a little while in order to speak with them.
10. Frenzy Humanoid on Touch for 10 seconds item. Can be used to get people to attack you, avoiding the criminal charge for murder.

Compounding Effects

The formula for compounding effects is tricky and can vary with the order in which you add the effects. Each new effect added to an enchantment causes the cost of existing effects to double, but the new effect costs only its normal cost.

What does this mean? Let's say, as an example, that you want to enchant an Exquisite Shirt (60 enchant points) with a constant effect of Restore Health. If you experiment with different levels of that effect, you will find that a constant effect of "Restore Health 2 to 3 pts on Self" costs 62 enchant points, more than you have. You can give it "Restore Health 2 pts on Self" for 50 enchant points. However, this seems like a waste of a 60 enchant point item. You might try throwing on another enchantment. Restore Fatigue sounds nice. You can give an item a constant effect of "Restore Fatigue 1 pt on Self" for 5 enchant points. So here is where the above formula comes in. If you follow your instincts, put the Restore Health on first, and add the Restore Fatigue as an afterthought, it works like this:

		Restore Health 2 pts on Self -- 50 enchant pointsAdd another enchantment -- double existing enchant points to 100
		Restore Fatigue 1 pt on Self -- 5 enchant points, for a total of 105 (a lot more than you have.)

The trick here is to do it the other way around:

		Restore Fatigue 1 pt on Self -- 5 enchant points
		Add another enchantment -- double existing enchant points to 10
		Restore Health 2 pts on Self -- 50 enchant points, for a total of 60.

The bottom line? Put in the small enchantments first. Play around with the enchantment you really want, then if you have enchant points left over, start over with some enchantment that uses up [i]half[/i] of the remaining points, then put your original enchantment back. It may not seem like much, but every little bit counts. (In particular, low magnitude constant effects of Light and cast when used effects of Levitate are helpful.)

Soul Gems

All but grand soul gems can be bought and found on random monsters throughout the world. Note that not all varients of monsters are included in the below table as are those with no soul value. Getting More Grand Soul Gems in Random Loot

This evening I discovered a trick to get more grand soul gems than one would expect to find in the game. I found that the random items in crates and barrels in bandit caves are re- assigned every time you leave the area and re-enter, provided that you've taken nothing out of the barrel yet.

To get loads of grand soul gems, or skooma bottles, or whatever else you happen to be after, it is merely a matter of entering the cave, finding and taking the grand soul gems out of the crates that have them, and then exiting the cave. When you return, all the crates you didn't take stuff out of have new stuff in them, and sometimes they'll have grand soul gems that they didn't have before. To save from wasting your time checking in crates that you've already taken something out of, it helps to set something useless, like a bottle of Grief, on top to mark it.

Using this trick, I found 20 grand soul gems in Minabi in 30 minutes, while I'd have only found 3 had I merely ran through the cave once. Time-consuming, yes, but it beats running all over Vvardenfell looking for them.

Constant Effect Tip

When making an Constant Effect Enchantment always set lowest to zero and the highest to maximum. i.e., when enchanting a Daedric shield with a Constant Effect Fortify strength you can make something like:

Fortify strength 30 to 30 points.

Better is to make it:

Fortify strength 0 to 60 points.

Why? Since it's a constant effect item you probably have it equipped constantly so if you equip it for the first time and the Fortitude is only 16 points or so, unequip and then re-equip it until the fortitude is 60 or 58 for example.This way you can make better enchantments for the cost of having to equip it a couple of times. Well worth it in my opinion.

Enchant Bug

There's an interesting bug when enchanting an object with Soul Trap. First, I'm playing Morrowind with Tribunal version 1.3.1029. I enchanted a Daedric Warhammer with:

Cast on hit:
Soul Trap 5 seconds on Touch
Cameleon 100 pts for 2 seconds on Self

For some reason after my first blow connected I've been under the effect of chameleon all of the time...in fact I cannot even remove the effect by reloading or whatnot.

More Enchant Bugs

I have had problems with constant effect enchantments. Like a constant effect bound dagger caused me to accumulate multiple daggers in my invetory that was just cluttering up space. Constant effect levitation was frustrating as I was permanently levitating a very slow speed.

There is also some multiple enchantment problems. Like when I made an amulet that cast a 100 open spell at a distance and cast telekinises, I ended up with a permanent unlimited range telekinises ability. All this was pre-Bloodmoon.

Also, do not combine a Bound Item spell and any other spell with Constant Effect on the same type of item (Bound Dagger and Invisibilty on a Dagger of example). This will crash the game. This was tested on the original Morrowind without any expansions.
