Training Athletics
18 December 2002

To increase your athletics skill, find a safe place (in town, in a building), toggle run mode, then toggle your auto-run (default key is 'Q' possibly need to patch game for this feature) then aim for a corner...you will constantly be running into the corner! Now go to sleep, go on vacation, etc...come back and your athletics skill will be increased a few (or a lot, depending on where you go on vacation!) This would probably work better if you can find some safe water (like a cave/shrine with water and all the enemies dead) and swim into a corner! It may also be possible to train acrobatics in a similar manner by taping down the jump key while you do this.

Another good tip for increasing acrobatics quickly. Go to Vivec and go to one of the steep ramps leading up into the canton's upper waistworks. Then run up the ramp and hit the jump button as fast as you can. Why is this better than just jumping? Because when you jump, you have to wait for your character to come back down. On the ramp, as you move forward, you are already "back to earth" so you can hit the jump button as fast as you can, rather than press it, wait, press it, wait. Repeat ad nauseum. For variety, rather than walk down the ramp again, jump over the railing to the level below...if you can survice the fall, you gain some more acrobatics. Boring, but cheaper than training and less annoying than simply jumping constantly at every step you take.

Taking Screenshots
23 June 2002

In order to enable the taking of screenshots within the game, you will have to open up the Morrowind.INI file with any text editor, and change the line:

Screen Shot Enable=0
to

Screen Shot Enable=1
Then, once in the game, simply press the Print Screen key to save a BMP file in the Morrowind directory. Screenshots are not overwritten between game sessions.

Starting Out Tips
27 October 2002

I have a few tips for characters getting started.

  1. Stealing From the Census Office Inside the census house, after you talk with the old guy but before you turn in your release paper, look around the room in which you get your dagger. Steal the semi-valuable items from the shelf behind you; you can sell them once you find the shop in town. From that room, if you turn right to continue down the hall, there's another store room. In the bags you can find miscellaneous herbs and food. As strange as it may sound, taking these and other things inside the census house doesn't activate guards or put a bounty on your head. (Don't try stealing things in town unless you're really good at it, otherwise you'll probably get killed.)

  2. First Quest - Fargoth's Gold
    Once you exit the census house, you'll run into the ring's owner, Fargoth. I suggest you give him the ring, as it will help you buys things in town cheaper and you can get it back later anyways. I also suggest you agree to find Fargoth's gold for Hrisskar. You'll get some good loot. Position yourself at the top of the lighthouse, as described in the "Miscellaneous Quest Walk-through". Fargoth will have a torch. He will move back and forth for a while before making his way to the swampy pond toward your left front. The torch will go out once he's in the water. Wait for him to leave, get your easy money, and see Hrisskar for your reward.

  3. Second Quest - Bandit's Cave
    Another good quest for beginners is clearing out the nearby cave of bandits. From the town, turn right and approach the silt rider station. As you get closer, there will be a path going left and downhill. Take that path to the door covering the cave entrance. The bandits aren't especially tough but it will be a realistic challenge for a new character. Freeing the slaves hasn't yet done anything for me but you can sell their shackles. Don't forget to loot the bodies and ALL the boxes.

  4. Contraband You'll pick up some highly valuable contraband which can make dealing with regular merchants difficult but the contraband is highly valuable to the right people (who you can find among thieves in Balmora). Just drop the contraband when you want to trade with a regular merchant and pick it up again before going on your way.

  5. Third Quest - Crypt A third quest in the area is the crypt. It can be tough for a new character, but you can leave the crypt, rest, and return as necessary until you've searched each room. To find the crypt, go past the silt rider station, uphill, and turn left. The crypt will be on the left; you will see a door covering a cave -- sort of looking like a bandit cave. The crypt is approximately equi-distant between Seyda Neen and Pelagiad. There are some useful merchants in Pelagiad (general merchandise, cheap potions, armor/weapons, and equipement repair) but not much else.

  6. Sleeping in Seyda There are a number of options when you are trying to sleep in Seyda Neen, not all of them obvious.
    1. Go down one of the paths some distance and select the "Rest Until Healed" option. If you get a message about "Resting here is illegal", keep moving farther away from town until you can.
    2. If you complete the Tax Collector quest and kill the murderer, you can sleep in his home without breaking the law from that point forward.
    3. In the census and excise house where you first register, if you continue back past the room with the dagger to the storeroom, there is a bedroll on the floor that no one has ever minded me using.

  7. Pelagiad Pawn Shop Thieving
    At the first fort that you come to on your way to Balmora you should enter the pawn shop. In the pawn shop you are able to jump and stand on the bags and boxes that are directly in front of you next to the UNLOCKED chest. The guard nor the Shopkeeper can see you and you have full access to the beautiful inventory (hint: never sell stolen items to the person that you stole from).

  8. Flying Mage
    If you wander down the path towards Hla Oad and Gnaar Mok, a wood elf will fall out of the sky and be killed on impact. He has some nice clothes, and also a wicked cool sword for beginners!

Sparring Partner
5 January 2003

I found a great sparring partner in the game! Go to Sadrith Mora and go to the Gateway hotel. You'll find out that one of the rooms is haunted, it's the south wing room. Go there and a ghost is there. He seems to have high skill, but low damage (to my character anyway!) So I took off my armor and let him hammer at me for a while to bring up unarmored skill or block skill, if I am holding the shield. Obviously, whatever armor you are wearing will benefit, though you'll have to fix it after it get pounded a bit (which is why unarmored is good!). Then you can just hack at the ghost with whatever weapons you want to advance in. It good if you beat him down with your fists so that he is more fatigued and easier to hit with weapons that you have low skill in. He has quite a bit of hitpoints, so you can hammer at him as long as you like. If you kill him, go downstairs, go out the door then back in...tada! Fresh punching bag! Also, if you get hammered too much...just go into the room where he came from and take a nap! He won't re-appear until you exit through the downstairs door! You can do this until you are absolutely sick of constant combat...I went up many, many skill levels here, but of course, it's boring and defeats the purpose of PLAYING the game....still, it'll give you an edge...

I was doing the thieves guild mission where you must steal the Nerano Mansion Key and was sick of being caught in the Council Club so I tried to steal of Ondres Nerano. When i kept failing this though i got sick of trying to pickpocket so i decided to rough him up with my fists. I simply failed a pick-pockets and used my fists when he turned on me. However my hand-to-hand skill was only 10 at the time so i spent the next half-hour or so getting the occasional blow in thinking, "oh he'll fall over any moment now". half an hour later he was finally lying on the floor and I had the key, a bounty of 18 or so dollars to pay (thanks to the thieves guild) and a hand-to-hand skill of 32!! This is because he is bad at combat, but a high-level (so lots of fatigue points), i recommend this, its simple enough for a level 1 character and has -so far- given me no extra problems.

Fast and Dirty, but Legal, Cash
27 January 2003

Here's a dirty way to make tons of loot in Morrowind: Find a store without a guard, and sell him everything you can spare. Then, shoplift something unimportant right in front of his eyes. He'll attack you, you get to kill him in self defense. Go to the nearest guard, and pay for the shoplifting (and give up what you took, hense "unimportant"). Go back and empty out the store, and get back what you just sold. Go next door and re- sell it all. Instant loot.

More Quick Cash Tips
Have your character at about level 2-5, prefferably good in his/her armor class. Anyways, go to Vivec and taunt an ordinator until they attack you. Kill them, and then take their armors, except for the curiss. . And rinse, and repeat against the other Ordinators. Make sure you heal too, or have a cheat code for healing, or whatnot. Then go to Caldera, through the mages guild's the best way in my opinion. Or you can Ride the Stilt to Balmora, and just go north of Balmora, following the path. And then, there's a junked-up looking House. Take yourself there, and you'll find a Scamp. Talk to him, and he'll have $5,000 bucks. Well, sell some of the ordinator's stuff, rest , and then sell again.

Great Item Locations
14 January 2003

Sword of White Woa, Bonemold Armor
The Sword of White Woe can be found on top of the closet with most of a set of bonemold inside in Balmora in the Eastern Tower. You don't have to fight the guard there to get that stuff as there is a blind spot. If you are by the foot of the bunkbeds you can take the items and not be noticed. After you get the stuff, you can equip and fight the guard to get his stuff and have a better chance of actually surviving.

Sneaking Tips
14 January 2003

Sneak. Perhaps the greatest tool on the game of Morrowind? I think so. Not only is this the most effective way to steal stuff (compared to killing the owner) but it is also a great way to talk to people AND to start out a fight on the upper hand. When sneaking (if skilled enough) no one will know that you are there, making it possible to talk to people that you were not previously able to talk to. Walk up to someone, release sneak and tap A (or SPACE) and you can talk to aggressive NPCs. Even if this is just for a brief 'goodbye' there can be some good information. In the fighter's sense, sneak is valuable because of critical damage. If you have a halfway decent weapon, you can kill virtually ANYONE with just one hit when sneaking, because of the critical damage. Is sneak the best skill in the game? I'll leave it for you to decide.

Starting Out Fast
19 January 2003

When you leave the census take the silkstrider to Balmora. Get the "Sword of White Woe" located in the Eastern Guard Tower, on top of the closet. Then check out the other Guard Towers and take anything you can carry. Now go to the Fighters Guild and talk with Eydis Fireeye to become a member, so that the merchant downstairs likes you a bit more. Persuade him up to 80 or more points and sell him anything you have, except the "Sword of White Woe". Rest for 24 hours, then sell him the Sword, and take everything he has. Rest again for 24 hours and sell him anything. You now should have more than 5000 gold. Sign up in the Mages Guild and use the guild guide to teleport to Caldera. Enter Ghorak Manor. Upstairs is a Scamp called Creeper. You can sell him 5000 gold for 5000 gold every day. Do this til day 150. Then kill Creeper and take the about 700000 gold. Now you can train whatever you like to get three x5 multiplier each level. Doing so will raise all attributes up to 100 in less than 4 hours.

Bartering Tips
3 August 2003

A little tip on how to easily get maximum disposition from merchants. The difficulty to raise one's opinion of you with persuasion depends on its level. It's easier to raise from 50 to 75 than to 99 to 100. But when you barter, each time negociation fails, disposition _temporarily_ drops one point, while if the deal is accepted, it (temporarily also) raise one point.

So, the thing is to barter, try to sell one worthless item at a prohibitive price (the "Max Sale" button added by Bloodmoon or Tribunal is handy), and click to propose the deal several times (like 20). Then cancel, persuade the merchant until you raise his/her opinion of yourself to 80% or more, and say goodbye. Talk with the merchant again, you've got 100% disposition.

Training Sneak/Athletics
15 October 2003

There is a way to train this much like you can with Athletics by running into a wall. This includes the 2nd Thieves guild quest in Balmora, but is not required. Go to the Nerano Manor and try to steal from Ondres Nerano and make sure he notices you. This will put him into combat mode. Next, run and jump up on the tables in the same room, the ones that form a half circle around support beam. Jump onto the plant by the support beam and you should be able to sneak there while Ondres Nerano tries in vain to punch you. Now just put a paper weight on your sneak key and you should be at full proficiency in sneak in roughtly 10-12 hours. So it's best to do something like this while you're at work or sleeping.

More Quick Cash
4 November 2003

Here is another quick way to get money at the start of the game.

  1. Complete the first quest for the Excise and Census Office and collect the 4 mushrooms you need for the first mages guild quest.
  2. Go to Suran and enter the pawnshop, kill the person in it, go talk to the guard and get the bounty off your head, THEN go and get the bracer, darts and knife along with the other equipment on the table
  3. Go to Balmora and do the quests up until you put the fake soulgem into the desk and steal everything on the desk (including the platter).
  4. Go kill Ravirr and take his Daedric weapons.
  5. Go to Tel Branora and go into Sethan's Tradehouse. Now SAVE and check the desk in the basement area, the ONLY TAKE ANYTHING OUT OF IT if it's worth 16,000 gold or more. If not, reload.
  6. Go to Caldera and repair all of your stuff.
  7. Sell everything to the Creeper in Caldera. This will get you about 120000-130000 gold in about 45 minutes, without putting yourself in much harms way (2 fights).

Training to 100 Trick
15 November 2003

There is a nice trick to raising skills to 100 without needing a master trainer who can be difficult (or impossible) to find. First, you have to find the "fortify skill" spell effect (easy with Tribunal) and create a custom spell of "Fortify other's skill" (on touch), for example 50 pts for 10 sec. Cast it on the trainer you need (like Wayn for armorer skill), then train to increase one point. Repeat the process until you reach 100, but you must cast the spell again each time you want to train.

I've tried to raise my skills OVER 100 using this technique (casting the spell on a master trainer and having 120 in the related caracteristic), but it didn't work...

Stopping Ordinators From Attacking
7 January 2004

If you wear any Indoril armor (Cuirass or Helmet) and an Ordinator guard sees you wearing it, they will attack you on sight from then on, even if you remove the armor and beg forgiveness. In order to fix the problem you can open the console and enter the commands:

		"ordinator stationary"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator wander"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator wander_hp"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_high fane"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_wander_hvault"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_wander_tvault"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_mh_stationary"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_mh_TBasement"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_MH_Sadri"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_mh_TH_UNI"->SetFight 30
		"ordinator_mournhold"->SetFight 30

Various Ordinator plugins are available from Morrowind Summit if you don't wish to manually enter the console commands. Do a search for Ordinator or Indoril.
