I've been playing Skyrim for a while and I have played most of Oblivion. I'd really like to play Morrowind. Here's my situation:

I do not have a PC for gaming. I am a Mac user, but I don't own a copy of windows. I do, however, own an Xbox 360. As far as I can tell, my options are:

1. Get a copy of Windows and install it on Bootcamp;
2. Get the regular xbox version and play it on the 360
3. Some kind of Mac port (but I'm not particularly tech-savvy and don't really know how to implement this)

I've heard some conflicting reports about how well the old xbox version actually works on the 360 (especially since I'd probably want the GOTY version), and I know that especially compared to Skyrim, it was designed with the computer in mind more than the console so I'm not sure how great the experience would really be. So what do you all suggest? What do you think is the best overall solution in terms of gaming experience and cost? Thanks!

(Note on Windows: I know I could probably get a copy of this via torrent, but I'm sort of avoiding torrenting because I'm living on-campus at law school, and you can get totally screwed in terms of bar admission if your university catches you pirating stuff. Just so not worth it.)

Talk of pirating is also against the rules here, so I'm glad you decided against that way. ;)

The Xbox version is what I started on, and to be honest it's not that bad. I haven't played it much on the 360 (I have the GOTY version), so I don't know how it performs late in the game.

As far as Mac ports, there really aren't ports as there are wrappers. WINE is a program that lets Unix machines run Windows executables, and there are several others that will let you do the same thing. The only problem would be tracking down a copy of the game on disc for PC

Hmm. So you would recommend going with the xbox version?

I think if I do this, I will have to wait until I move in with my boyfriend in a few months - my understanding is that Morrowind has a lot of small-text reading? I live in a studio apartment and have a pretty small TV. He has an enormous TV.

Morrowind is definitely the wordiest game of the series (with maybe Battlespire beating it out, but that's a spin off).

I get good results playing Morrowind inside a Wineskin wrapper on a Macbook. It's certainly preferable to the xbox version. Morrowind just isn't very well suited to the console, IMO.

Here's the short, short version: 8)

1. Download . You'll need to create a Porting Team account first, but it takes all of 30 seconds.

2. When you've downloaded the .dmg, open it, and you'll find an Instructions.pdf inside. This will explain how to install your PC version of morrowind. It's only a matter of a few clicks. The wrapper allows you to install the software directly from the Morrowind disc.

Note that you don't need to download the Wine application itself, as the wrapper is self-contained. In fact, a real understanding of Wine isn't needed unless you plan on making your own wrappers. Check out if you have any questions on that front.

As far as modding goes, there's very little stopping you. A few mods that require DirectX won't be compatible. But basically everything else is fair game.

Most mods you download will be zipped. You can use an OSX version of if Archive Utility won't extract certain formats.

I'd also highly recommend to any mac user. It converts windows executables into mac apps. This will allow you to make use of mods that come packed as .exe files.

The xbox version isn't that bad.
If you plan on playing it on 360, don't get the vanilla version as I think it's missing the difficulty meter.
The GOTY should work on 360 although you may have to install a patch.

Xbox is probably a good way to go, although you will miss out on all the nice mods. But good luck trying to find it for sale anywhere. It sells for about $100+ on Amazon....

you should absolutely get one of the best games ever for the 360.

remember, it's an actual rpg: character-based mechanics.

I got it working on my Mac! Thanks guys! :)

I decided against xbox because (1) I couldn't find an affordable copy, and (2) I didn't feel like doing all that reading from across the room.

I see why people play TES games on the computer, though. It's immediately more immersive. Maybe in a few months I'll get Oblivion for PC too - I played through some of Oblivion on the xbox and I got really frustrated after a while, but everyone says it's better with mods, so maybe I'll give it a try.

Mac users who play Morrowind are far and few between. We're always happy to count another among our ranks! 8)

You'll have to redate the .bsa files before you mod. Here's on the Steam forums explaining how to do so.

Your best bet is to use . Unfortunately, you'll have to use something like Winebottler to convert Mash.exe into a self-contained app. Then you can open Wrye Mash and use it to redate the files. Sorry, but Steam doesn't make it easy.

Hmm, maybe I'll try that later. At this point the only problem I'm having is that capslock doesn't seem to toggle run for me. Left shift makes me run, but capslock does nothing. :(

ETA and rating to change the control froze up my game? It said "press a key or button to reset this control" and the music kept going but I couldn't move the mouse and pressing keys had no effect...
