So. That moment when you stumble across something on the internet. The moment where time just stops, you throw up your arms, and you say "[&@%!] it". When the joys of innocence turn to bitter ashes in your mouth. When you realize that the human race is doomed, and you just stop caring.

We've all been there, right? Sometimes it's triggered by a "childhood killer"- typically an extreme [&@%!] image featuring a beloved childhood hero of yours. Sometimes it's a run-in with an online predator, or a [&@%!] insane Otherkin who thinks he's the reincarnated spirit of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy. Maybe it's a bad comment on your DA page. Or an unfair ban here on UESP. Whatever that watershed moment is, it causes us to completely rethink the online world, and our place in it.

In this thread, we discuss the horrible, awful things that made us give up hope. The things that can not be unseen. When did you reach critical mass and turn into a hollow, bitter shell?

For me, it's rather a mild one. I know that for companies to survive there must be money changing hands, but the first time a video failed to load and said 'Problems with loading? Try Internet Explorer!' I switched off the computer and took up sport.

Probably slowly scrolling down the Offended page on ED when I was barely into my teens and hadn't seen gore before. I've seen countless worse things since then, but I've never really recaptured that feeling of being violated.

What a disgrace to the internet, Best Gore is. I just saw the first page of the site, and clicked back. No, not happening, that's just sadism. In fact, call me ignorant, but I don't want to get far enough in the site to actually understand what it's all about. Neither do I want to watch 1 Lunatic 1 Icepick.

Probably the First time I watched He-man Sings. I was never the same. On a more serious note.

Anyway there are so many disturbing things on the internet. Still I haven't given up all hope.

The real question here is, why were you offended by ED? So yeah, saw that page. Did not like it. Turned back around.

Offended by ED? Nah, the people there like to think of themselves as some shock group but really they come across as quite cold and artificial in that regard. It's primarily for sick humour rather than to cause offense, if you ask me.

I just like looking up racial slurs on there. 8D

I was shown (I didn't voluntarily watch it) Pain Olympics back in year 8. I'm not even carrying that material and it made me clench my legs together for dear life.

I remember watching 2 Girls 1 Cup out of my own curiosity a few years ago.

I've seen copious amounts of gore. Heard so many horror stories of rape, abuse, assault, and more, from friends. I've been blown away so many times. That f*cker, Luka Magnotta, soiling the reputation of my countrymen. I was tickled pink when I found out that the German police beat the living sh*t out of him. Unrepentant criminals, the deranged, predators, those who would do harm to the innocent for pleasure or personal gain--they deserve the highest degree of punishment. Torture, mutilation, starvation, life imprisonment. No execution. Death is too good for them.

But have I given up hope?

Absolutely not.

I've seen and heard plenty of scary sh*t, but I've also seen so much beauty. Wonderful people. People rising above the hate and the pain. Our world is worth living in, despite all the hardships and suffering. We need to try to make it a better place. There is still hope. There is always hope, as long as there is one of us to wave the flag of peace, order, and justice.
