Daggerfall: BIOG*.TXT Hacking

15 February 2011

Lately, there has been many questions, and answers, on how to edit the BIOG??T0.TXT files in the Daggerfall \ARENA2\ directory. Here, I've collected and have tried to organize this information for easy reference for the do-it-yourself-hacker. Please Contact the Webmaster with any suggestions/additions on these pages.

Editing BIOG Files
Basic information on the structure of the BIOG*.TXT files and how to edit them to your advantage.
Class Association
List of which BIOG*.TXT file goes with which class.
Skill Codes
Lists of codes for the editting of skills (long blade, restoraton, lock picking etc...).
Reputation Codes
Codes for modifying reputations (with merchants, nobility, etc...).
Resistance Codes
List of codes for changing resistances (to magic, poison etc...)
Armour/Weapons Codes
Lists for the addition of armour and weapons of all qualities (iron to daedric).
Artifact Codes
List for the addition of all artifacts with description of each.
Clothing Codes
List for the addition of various articles of clothing.
Gold/Gems Codes
List for the addition of vast quanties of wealth and riches.
Misc. Codes
List for various items which do not fit in elsewhere.
Sample Hacked BIOG File
Example of a completely hacked BIOG*.TXT file giving the character ridiculus amounts of everything.
Another Sample BIOG File
Gives your character just about every item in the game (minus clothing). Created by Davidius (emperor@asherian.com).

Editing Daggerfall Bio**t*.txt Files
Old

Before you edit a bio**.txt file be sure the one you're editing is the same as the one you get asked in the character generator. Be sure the questions are in the same order and that the answers are the same. Sometimes the same questions have different or more answers.

When editing a biog. file the questions look something like this:

  1. What school of magic have you been studying the longest?
	a. School of Destruction
	      22 +6
	b. School of Restoration
	      23 +6
And so on.....

The words are the answer and the numbers beneath are the modifications to your character carried out by the game when you pick that answer. IE. Choosing "School of Destruction" for an answer adds 6 points to skill number 22, which is Destruction. You can alter as many skill modifications as you like under any answer. For example, say I change the modifiers under "School of Destruction" to read:

	a. School of Destruction
	     22 +20
	     23 +20
Now, by choosing "School of Destruction" for an answer my character will get 20 points added to both skill #22 (Destruction) and skill #23 (Restoration).

More Information on Editing BIO??T?.TXT Files
I would like to add one caveat to editing. It seems as though when adding items you have to "stick with the format so to speak. For example, if the question reads:

   1. You have a certain degree of training with ___.
        a. Short-bladed weapons
	   #4454
	   28 +6
           IT 3 1 3
I've notices I can give myself any ONE item I want by changing the IT X X X values. However - if I try to ADD lines here by making it say (for example):
    a. Short-bladed weapons
	 #4454
 	 28 +9
         IT 3 7 8
         IT 3 8 9
         IT 3 8 8
What I end up with in the Hold is nothing, nada, zippo for THAT question. A possible fix for this is to make sure the IT is preceeded by a TAB, and not just spaces. Also make sure your text editor keeps and saves the TABs (rather than converting them to spaces).

The #???? type entries might activate a command to write something to the character's biography, althought this hasn't beenm verified yet.

One last item - Mark Haman came up with a great suggestion. Since all the questions in some files are quite similar, you can change the text to be sure you are getting the right file. All mine have the first question like so:

    1. You have a certain degree of training with ___(11).
Which means this is file BIOG11T0.TXT Etc. for all the files.

Class Associations
Old

These are the classes that the files BIOG??T0.TXT go with (I think). I.E., if you wanted to make a Ranger with modified stats you would edit the file BIO14T0.TXT.

3 Sorceror 13 Archer
