Lore:Minerals Sandbox[edit]

Hi TRL, not sure if you noticed this message. I kind of stuck it in an obscure place. —Legoless (talk) 18:09, 4 October 2012 (GMT)

Icon template[edit]

Hey TRL. As you'll probably notice, I've tweaked your Icon template so it can do without the subtemplates. I haven't prodded them for now, just in case Morrowind makes a subtemplate design more desirable, but generally it's less server-intensive to have a single template instead of subtemplates, when practical. If you have any questions about the changes, feel free to ask, either here or in IRC if I'm there. (Off for lunch right now, but I'll probably be there later today.) Robin Hoodtalk 17:36, 10 October 2012 (GMT)

Okay, I left it that way because the naming was not consistent between games, so I thought the sub-templates would have to be different to accommodate them. (And that seemed better than having multiple nested switch statements bloating the template up - something you do have to be conscious of when it's used hundreds of times on a page like this.) As it turns out, the Oblivion icons were mostly non-existent (a condition I've been remedying over the past few days), and the Morrowind icons are too inconsistent even amongst themselves to be conducive to templating. Possibly if we start moving the Morrowind icons in order to maintain site consistency, a single template might work for all of them. I think the current MW icons are basically slightly modified names based on the actual game files, which we wanted to maintain for some reason. Not sure if there's really much benefit to that in retrospect, and this technique would definitely NOT work for, say, Oblivion. (Most of the armor and clothing icons, for example, have exactly the same file names, and are only distinguished by folder structure.) I think adopting Skyrim's naming scheme for all namespaces is not too far out of the question, especially now that we have bots to handle this kind of task. (Also, back then, renaming files wasn't even an option - you had to delete and re-upload them with a different name instead, which is why we were saddled with these ugly file names for so long.) TheRealLurlock (talk) 02:12, 11 October 2012 (GMT)
I think we're on the same page, then. I was going to double-check on it, but I'm pretty sure that nested switches would perform worse than subtemplates in this scenario, because as I recall, it parses the entire thing, including the sections it doesn't really need to. Assuming that's correct, as you and I both seem to think it is, that would certainly make a subtemplate design more worthwhile, which is why I suggested MW might work out better with a subtemplate design. With only Oblivion and Skyrim in the picture at the moment, though, and both of them using the correct naming, at least for the -icon images I found, I figured it made sense to use the single template. Then, as you suggest, we can make Morrowind and any remaining Oblivion icons match the proper naming scheme. Robin Hoodtalk 22:29, 11 October 2012 (GMT)

Sigil stone icon[edit]

I'm not sure what you've got for the 13 October version of this, but the 10 October version is definitely a sigil stone (check it out here). Are there different sigil stones that might have that icon? Vely►t►e 22:25, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

Ugh. There's different icons in the game files with the same name in different folders, I figured I was wrong the first time. Okay, reverting it. TheRealLurlock (talk) 22:38, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

I thought you were a bit hungry...[edit]

You have been given a plateful of cookies!

Great job with uploading all those icons for the OB namespace! Seriously! The Recent Changes is bombarded by all your uploads it's a change in sight! Keep up the great work! :D -Helenaannevalentine(talk) 02:35, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

Word. You're part bot now, right? In any case, it's a huge task you've taken on, and the wiki is better for it! Way to go :D — ABCface 02:38, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
My maternal grandfather was a bot, so I've got it in the blood. These aren't nearly as hard as the Skyrim ones, which I had to carefully cut out by hand. The Oblivion ones at least already have an alpha channel in the image, so a simple Photoshop action makes creating the icons as simple as one button click. The hardest part is figuring out which icons go with which, because the names are all generic and not very descriptive. On a secondary note, I just hit 300 uploads in a single day! Which is good, because I've pretty much run out. There's a few more I could upload, but I don't think they're actually used anywhere in the game... TheRealLurlock (talk) 02:43, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
Wow, 300? Seriously? :o That's quite a lot, especially considering the fact that's in a SINGLE day :D -Helenaannevalentine(talk) 02:47, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
(edit conflict) Yes, you have definitively proven that you are the Lurlock, the real Lurlock, and all those other Lurlocks are, indeed, imitating.
But resorting to bribery to get more votes for Patroller, Helena? For shame! Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 02:51, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
Incidentally, if you go into your Preferences under Recent Changes and turn on Enhanced Recent Changes, it groups all similar entries together, so you can see the actual count. There's other useful features there too. I highly recommend it. It also helps the RC not be completely flooded when crazy people like me do stuff like this. TheRealLurlock (talk) 02:53, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
Minor Edits, I would do no such thing! Plus I've kind of left my nomination for now and let it run it's course :p It's just that fact he spent this much time on all that, and wasn't congratulated on it, so I decided I'd be the first and let the rest follow :P Ah I'll do that straight away TRL, all I can see is your uploads and edits minus a few others -Helenaannevalentine(talk) 03:08, 14 October 2012 (GMT)
Whoa! It's actually more than that. I was falling victim to the limit of 500 edits showing on the page at once. Increase the limit to 1000 in the URL and you can see that I apparently uploaded almost 450 icons! Whew. TheRealLurlock (talk) 04:42, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

Hey Question?[edit]

Hey couple people on the IRC said I should get the ok of an Admin before actually using this User:Lord_Eydvar/Spam so I'm running it by you. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 03:39, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

I'd put this on the CP rather than ask me directly. Honestly speaking? I personally think it's unnecessary. Spam notices generally only exist for a very short amount of time, and are usually only seen by the admin that deletes the page, so having a big shiny image on the template is kind of silly. (It's also a potential copyright infringement, though I don't think Hormel Foods cares all that much.) TheRealLurlock (talk) 03:47, 19 October 2012 (GMT)
Yeah planning to reformat it into a joke prize anyways now... the image is actually from the Baltimore Sun... its linking not uploaded so shouldn't be a copyright issue. Thanks Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 03:48, 19 October 2012 (GMT)
Doesn't matter where you found the image - Hormel Foods owns the copyright to that packaging. I think they've by now resigned themselves to the fact that their product name is synonymous with unwanted internet advertising, but that doesn't mean it isn't technically illegal, whether the image is linked or uploaded, though as I said I doubt they'd care. If you want to use it just as a joke prize, that's up to you, I guess, but I don't think it needs to be used in any official capacity on spam notices. TheRealLurlock (talk) 03:54, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

() yeps i agree, I also for good measure looked up the copyright rules and as long as its a Creative commons OR a thumbnail it's copyright exempt. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 04:00, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

Can you block 91.237.249.249, they've created six new spam pages recently. — ABCface 14:11, 27 October 2012 (GMT)
