Can't Fix Stupid[edit]

Check out the latest subject that I created on the Community Portal. I'm sure you'll be interested :) --Aristeo 23:47, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

Umbra[edit]

  • ((( Your Questions))Although I saw this note while I was working on these pages yesterday, I did not try to add this content because 75% of it is not new information, and the remaining part I don't really understand.
  • ((Q)) What does this have to do the bug part of the page? I don't see that this provides any new information on avoiding the glitch, and in general I don't see why more effort needs to be put into explaining this glitch when all you need to do to get rid of it is install the patch.
  • ((A)) Most Oblivion players do not have XBOX live and can not get thye patch.
  • ((Q))How do you not get a bounty doing this? Disintegrate weapon is an offensive spell; casting it on Umbra should count as an assault.

((A))I never killed her. and no guards where around, Using the invisable spell I made her forget I ever visited her.

  • ((Q))Why do you need to paralyze Umbra? Doesn't she just drop the sword on the ground when it's fully disintegrated?

If she doesn't drop the sword, then why go through the disintegrate rigmarole? Why not just take it from her right away?

  • ((A)) She will not drop the sword because it is a quest item. When it is disintegrted it goes to her invo. then you can stea it while she is paralised. The new info I provide is a way to not get the dark brotherhoodlooking for you and not glitch the game by starting th quest w/o the sword. thank you.

Horse goes the Speed of Light[edit]

It looks like another user has added the "horse goes the speed of light when you visit the shrine of Julianos" glitch onto Oblivion:Glitches. Since this is the second person to add this "exploit", and the third time it has been up here, I think we might need to test this out for ourselves to see how much of an exploit this really is. --Aristeo 14:11, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

Looks like I was too late. You may want to explain why it's not a glitch on Oblivion_talk:Glitches to avoid getting in an edit war. --Aristeo 14:18, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

I put an explanation on User talk:DrTran instead of the Glitches talk page, figuring this user would be more likely to notice it there than bother to read the Glitches talk page. Given that it's already documented at Oblivion:Horses#Useful Spells that Fortify Speed is particularly effective on horses, I don't really see what is new here. But if one of these contributors would like to explain why this is really a glitch, instead of just posting the exact same information over and over again, I'll definitely read what they have to say. --Nephele 14:57, 20 October 2006 (EDT)
Just for kicks, I tried this out tonight. I didn't get anything to happen at the wayshrine of Julianos near Weatherleah, which is what all three posts referred to. And that was the only part of these posts that didn't make sense to me, since the wayshrine of Julianos provides a fortify intelligence/fortify magicka enchantment. So instead I found a wayshrine of Akatosh (I happened to go the one southeast of Skingrad, doubt it makes a different), since Akatosh provides a fortify speed effect. And then my horse definitely started to run faster.
So to me it still doesn't add to up a glitch... it just seems like adding together a couple known game features. Oblivion:Horses#Useful Spells already states that fortify speed effects are unusually effective on horses. This is just a new way of casting a fortify speed effect on a horse, by making the horse be in contact with the wayshrine when the wayshrine's spell is cast. An interesting exploit, yes, and perhaps someone should add it to the Horses page, but I don't see anything that indicates this is a game malfunction. --Nephele 03:27, 22 October 2006 (EDT)

Permanent Block on Posiden5565[edit]

While trying to help the group who made the new Console Commands page, Posiden5665 (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log) has persistently made threatening posts directed at UESP and myself on his forum. (see this thread) Do you feel like we should indefinitely block this kid, or do you want to give him a second third chance? --Aristeo 21:01, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

Just to chime in (Aristeo said I could), I think that we should probably ban this guy. He has threatened to take down the UESP site, and I just don't see how we can let this guy continue to work on the UESP. I really think his threat is empty, since he's only 14, but he's being very disrupted.

Talon the shadow mage[edit]

Hello, sorry about Baeralorn thing. I have a user account now. It is named Talon the shadow mage.--69.146.18.154 17:47, 22 October 2006 (EDT)

No problem, sorry things were so rocky to start with. You might notice that I moved the user page you created to the user name space, i.e., User:Talon the shadow mage. And I try not to judge people by their age, but I don't have any need to know your age :) --Nephele 15:50, 21 October 2006 (EDT)

Thank you for helping with my page. How do I change the text sizes on pages? Also I made my first contribution to the wiki. I added to the page on Delphine Jend some info concerning the item labeled <missing name>. If you someone to test things in-game for you, I am available. I have the 360 version.

Changing text sizes: you can type for example <small>small text</small>. However, the answer probably depends upon the context. For example, if you want to create large text for a title, it's probably better to use the title markup, e.g.,

==My title==

See Help:Quick Editing Guide for a summary of the various commands you can use. Or add the text you're thinking of, then point out what specifically you want to do, and I can provide a better answer.
What's happening with Posiden isn't because of his age, but rather because of multiple cases of him violating wiki rules, even after being warned to stop. Don't vandalize, and don't insult/threaten other users, and you won't have any problems :)
I saw what you added to Oblivion:Delphine Jend and actually expanded it some based on information from the construction set. Thanks for the contribution!
Finally, to sign your comments on talk pages, you can just type: --~~~~. That automatically adds the date and your user name.
--Nephele 16:20, 21 October 2006 (EDT)

I added something on Umbra, but it got put in a box and is going off the page. How do I fix it? Also my calm, frenzy, and demoralize spells are not working. They just don't affect their targets. My other spells are fine though. --~~~~

Don't include the "nowiki" part when you're doing your signature, just the two dashes and 4 tildes.
With your Umbra edit, I'm guessing you probably have a space at the start of the line. Delete any spaces at the start of the line. If you want to indent, add a colon (:) instead of spaces.
Calm, Frenzy, and Demoralize are all dependent on the level of your target, any chance you need a stronger spell? Which just made me realize, frenzy will never work on Umbra, because her level is so high that you can never make a strong enough spell. The highest level spell you can make at the spell making altars will work on level 25 characters. If your level is past level 25, you probably can't make strong enough versions of those spells any more.
--Nephele 16:36, 21 October 2006 (EDT)

I have made my second contribution. I have added to Daedric quests: Hircine that the unicorn is immune to normal weapons.

Oblivion:Alchemy Effects[edit]

You said "I don't see how the page on alchemy effects is item-related; there are no items listed on that page. If anything, perhaps there should be more information included on the potions page, but I do not see how cluttering up an already very long list of items with something unrelated helps any readers. If you disagree, please explain your position on the talk page, but do not simply reverse the edit without any explanation again."

The page is absolutly items - it contains a list of potion effect sorted by effect - each row IS a potion and hece each row IS a item. It is very hard to get to this page without a direct link to it.

It may be instructions on how to make items but it is not actually a page listing items. You can not, for example, type player.additem xxxx with anything on the Alchemy Effects page and end up with a new item in your inventory. If we start listing every page that has any information about how to make items, there are MANY other pages that would also belong on the items page; at that point the items page becomes impossible to use, because it is cluttered with so much extraneous information. And it's not as if the Alchemy Effects page has a shortage of links to it: there are 52 pages that already provide links to Alchemy Effects, including Oblivion:Magic and Oblivion:Alchemy. I think it is confusing and disorganized to lump this page into the middle of the list of item pages. If other editors disagree, I'd welcome their input, but at the moment I don't see any justification for including that link on the page. --Nephele 14:00, 29 October 2006 (EST)

Fixed the guide[edit]

Hi Nephele. I fixed the stuff i thought was not proper in my guide. What do you think of it now? Sincerely --Magnusri 06:29, 30 October 2006 (EST)

I posted on Aristeo's page a couple of days ago, but i think he might be away or busy, so I'm just letting you know i fixed it aswell. --Magnusri 06:34, 30 October 2006 (EST)
I got a reply from Aristeo so you dont have to think about it ;) --Magnusri 12:27, 30 October 2006 (EST)

HELP[edit]

We've got a crazy page-blanker going on here. Please block him before he does anymore damage. --TheRealLurlock 10:47, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Thank you. You know, Wikipedia has a filter that detects when somebody is just repeatedly blanking pages and reverts and blocks them automatically. Now that anonymous editting is allowed, we might want to consider something like that. Also might be worth in the mean-time semi-protecting those main pages, so only registered users can change them. (Since they are the most frequent targets of attacks like this.) --TheRealLurlock 11:07, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Rookie Links[edit]

Since you said it'd be alright to ask you questions in your talk page, I'll take that opportunity. I'd like to know about wiki-type links, primarily how I'm supposed to link to any particular page in here through one. In my user page, I only managed to get the Telvanni link right through trial and error, since a direct copy/paste of another correct link I found wasn't working. Also, what's generally considered good form for linking, as in how often do I do it in any given page? Organous 09:02, 4 November 2006 (EST)

The problem you encountered on your user page is that the link you copied included {{NAMESPACE}}, which is a fancy way of doing links that doesn't need to be used too often; in general on the wiki curly brackets signal that something advanced is being done. A more standard link looks like, for example [[Morrowind:Alchemy|a link to a page]], which when entered on a page comes out looking like: a link to a page. The first part, "Morrowind:Alchemy", is the name of the page you want to link to; the part after the "|" symbol is the text that you want to have appear on the page. For the page name, generally you can just cut and paste the last part of the URL for the page (everything after www.uesp.net/wiki/); there's some flexibility, for example spaces can either be spaces or underscores. One shortcut to save some typing is to just enter [[Morrowind:A Falling Wizard|]], in which case the text that appears on the page is just the final chunk of the page name: A Falling Wizard. Using the preview button is always helpful when in doubt: you can test any links (right click, open in a new window) in the preview pane to make sure they actually work.
As for how often to use links, the general rule is that the first time a topic is mentioned on the page it should have a link, but there shouldn't usually be multiple links to the same place on a single page. You can also check the style guide.
I hope this information helps! --Nephele 11:29, 4 November 2006 (EST)

Bread Crumb Trails[edit]

Hello! I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but Wrye left some comments on the community portal that express some concerns about the changes I made to the bread crumb trails. Since your one of the people who supported the change that I made and suggested it in the first place, I want to ask you if you can defend some of the accusations made against me and the changes I made. I'd like to prove to him that I didn't make these changes unpremeditatedly. --Aristeo | Talk 18:59, 28 November 2006 (EST)

Mana Efficiency Chart[edit]

Hey Nephele, Took me a bit to notice the message you left me. Moving the chart to a more appropriate page sounds like a good idea. Please do. As far as changing the chart, I'll try to get around to that in the next couple days.

64.150.0.1 - just block it[edit]

I moved your warning because you had an extra '0' in the IP address. Personally, I wouldn't even bother with the warning. It's clearly a spam-bot which won't ever read it. My advice would be just to block it before it does anything else. (You'll notice the 4 edits I reverted before were all the classic long random number - always a tell-tale sign of a spam bot prior to a full attack. Aristeo seemed to agree with me that nothing good ever comes from anyone whose first few posts are like that.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 12:53, 29 November 2006 (EST)

Thanks for picking up the IP address typo. It's not so clear to me that this is just a spam-bot. As far as I can tell, spam-bots only add spam to pages, they do not replace parts of pages with spam. Furthermore, the four edits that I reverted were made by someone who knew what the site was about, and in no way resembled the activities of a bot. In the absence of any clear policy saying that users should be blocked without warning, I'd prefer to be cautious and follow established policy of warn first, then block if the activity continues. --Nephele 13:35, 29 November 2006 (EST)
It's a known MO of a common spam bot. The bot automatically makes a number of edits to the wiki (often many different wikis, depending on how it's set up) in the form of a long random number. It then uses that number to track which wikis and which pages on those wikis are receiving the most traffic. It then reports those pages back to the bot operator, who usually uses the information to post spam links on the most trafficked pages in order to increase their own page ranking. In this case, the person used it to just post mischievous vandalism, but the tool they used is the same as that used by spammers. The one thing you can generally be sure of is that any post consisting of nothing but a long random number (whether it adds to or replaces the existing page content) is invariably up to no good. Nearly every time an anonymous IP editor has made such a post, it has been shortly followed by a bunch of spam or vandalism.
One thing I was discussing with Aristeo was that it's possible that even after reverting such a spam link, the spammer still benefits, since the link continues to exist on the archived page. (We were going to talk to Daveh about how we'd go about preventing web spiders from looking at archived history pages - assuming it's not already set up that way.) Thus, whenever I see those random number posts, my instinct would be to block it before we see what damage it plans to do. If it's not our policy to do that at this time, we might consider changing the policy, because there's no way anything good comes after such a post. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:53, 29 November 2006 (EST)

Color templates[edit]

Thanks for the little fix - I forgot your template existed. I'm about to do hundreds of these spell-merchant pages for Morrowind, but I noticed when I did Morrowind:Estirdalin that the Alteration color you were using really didn't match the game icons. So I decided to change that, then decided I might as well make the change site-wide, then came up with the idea of using templated colors so we can just change it in one place in the future instead of going to every page. (And also I didn't want to have to keep looking them up.) Anyhow, I adjusted your template to match my color scheme a bit better. Hope you don't mind. (Always bothered me how Alteration and Mysticism were so hard to tell apart before anyhow.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 22:21, 7 December 2006 (EST)

No problem. It sounds like we both had the same motivation: wanting to make sure that if templates were going to be used, that the color codes were only specified in one place to prevent inconsistencies from creeping in. Sorry I didn't realize that you'd already tweaked the colors some. --Nephele 10:48, 8 December 2006 (EST)
The only weird thing about it is the name of your template - "Oblivion School Color", is a bit off, considering the colors actually come originally from Morrowind, and are not used at all in Oblivion. But whatever. It works for now. --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:57, 8 December 2006 (EST)
I named it Oblivion School Color because the colors were only being used on Oblivion pages. But renaming the template may be in order if it's going to be used more widely. --Nephele 11:03, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Proposed Deletion Pages[edit]

I'm about to go through the pages up for proposed deletion and delete the ones that qualify for it. Unfortunately, I can't delete a bunch of them because I'm the only who originally proposed the pages. Please look through those pages and either delete them or give me the thumbs up to do so. Thanks! --Aristeo | Talk 00:41, 8 December 2006 (EST)

I'll try to look through them later today. --Nephele 10:49, 8 December 2006 (EST)
Done. I've taken care of everything that's more than two weeks old that I didn't originally propose for deletion. I'm thinking that we should extend the waiting period to two weeks temporarily given that the site was down for nearly a week. Actually, we should perhaps lean towards a two week waiting period from now until early January, given that many people's schedules will be affected by christmas and new year's. --Nephele 12:52, 15 December 2006 (EST)

many thanks[edit]

I tried using your email me link while I was logged-in with a valid email address specified in my profile, but I received the error page (falsehood in advertising?), so I'll offer my thanks here: cookie moved to [[User:Nephele/Cookie_Jar|cookie jar

Thanks, Uniblab! I may not be able to add any content to the Daggerfall pages, but I'm always willing to help out with administrative things that need to be done. As for the email link, I'm pretty sure the link works (other users have been able to email me, for example). Is there any chance that you haven't validated your email address? I think until you get the system to send you an email and validate the address, it basically doesn't recognize that you've provided an email address. --Nephele 11:08, 19 December 2006 (EST)
