Finding book activators[edit]

Hi Alfwyn. Thanks again for your help on the Remanada talk page. If it's not too much trouble, could you explain how you found the activator for that book in the CK? I tried to do the same for The Song of Pelinal, v1, but have no idea what I'm doing. --Xyzzy Talk 07:09, 20 January 2014 (GMT)

I find the easiest way here is CSList. Click on the item in question in the console, look up the reference ID you get in CSList (add 0x at the front, replace the first two digits for add-ons). It will show the enable parent as "parent". This method is really useful for quickly deciding whether something is from a leveled list or not.
The CK method would be to look up the reference of the item in question in the cell. So let's take BYOHHouse1Falkreath as an example. Sorting the cell references either by editor ID or type is the quickest way to locate Book4RareSancretor. Right-click "edit" the reference. Now there are two ways an item can be disabled, the first would be the "Initially Disabled" check mark set. The other is having an enable parent, the item will be enabled exactly when the parent is (one can set the opposite flag though). The parent is found in the "Enable Parent" tab; needs scrolling through the tabs.

Thanks. I also saw your comment on Skyrim_talk:The_Song_of_Pelinal,_v1, which is exactly what I was looking for. --Xyzzy Talk 04:25, 24 January 2014 (GMT)

Metatemplate Caching Issues[edit]

Hi! I'm not really that clear about it any more, but you proposed a theory that some changes to #save values could invalidate a huge number of pages that use #load, causing some #loads to time out and display improperly. Has there been any progress on that?

I'm asking because you're proposing to generate the table on sr:Archery on the fly. It's not even a problem to computer dps on the fly using #expr if it isn't stored (or it could be computed in the template that stores the bow info), but if Metatemplate is the cause for these issues, I'd be wary of using it more (affecting more pages) unless that bug has been found and fixed. --◄mendel► (talk) 14:31, 23 February 2014 (GMT)

Well, probably a bit more complicated. Yes, since MetsTemplate uses transclusion as its model, changes to some pages will cause potentially many pages to re-render. However I don't think it's a #load time out problem causing problems, but rather a race condition between those dependent pages re-rendering and the #saved values being ready to be read. But that's more of a theory anyway.
Just computing dps from base damage and draw speed is not the problem, but the "list me all bows and their damage, make a table from that" part. SMW concepts can do that, #listsaved does something similar.

Since we're discussing this anyway, are you able to replicate the issue on dev, Alfwyn? I've tried both there and on my testing wiki, and I can't seem to get it to occur. I'm not 100% sure what the conditions are to trigger it, though, so maybe I'm not quite doing something correctly. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:11, 24 February 2014 (GMT)
I tried a bit, but couldn't. It may very well be a problem that only manifests on a wiki with other things going on concurrently. Anyway, if you still have that book icon parameter changing code at hand, you could try and run that a bit on dev, because that managed somehow to break the overview pages 100%. But part of the problem to find the bug is its random nature. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:50, 24 February 2014 (GMT)
And just for reference, it is the same issue reported back in 2012 at UESPWiki:Administrator_Noticeboard/Archive_29#Outstanding_Upgrade_Issues_3 . --Alfwyn (talk) 14:23, 24 February 2014 (GMT)
A key difference may be, that dev is not using memcached. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:57, 24 February 2014 (GMT)
I did a partial run, and there were no noticeable issues. Unfortunately, the underlying bot framework decided to show its weaknesses and I started getting false edit conflicts all over the place, so I couldn't continue the test. (I am so looking forward to getting my own bot framework far enough along that I can start using it!) Robin Hood  (talk) 22:38, 24 February 2014 (GMT)
Update: Fixed the bot framework bug and did another partial run, testing each section of page saves and then skipping ahead to the next one after a few saves were done, and I see no issues on any of the pages. We'll have to see how things go once it's moved to production, but this may be the first significant insight we have into what's causing the bug. Robin Hood  (talk) 23:40, 24 February 2014 (GMT)

Congrats!! Jeancey (talk) 16:07, 3 March 2014 (GMT)
Oh thanks, didn't notice on my own. Glad it wasn't a self-revert of stupid stuff or something like that. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:28, 3 March 2014 (GMT)
Oooh, another one. Congratulations! Robin Hood  (talk) 21:59, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

Online Books[edit]

Hi Alfwyn. Would you know how to make the "Collections" column appear on Online:Books? I tried, but the column wasn't populated with data. Thanks! --Jimeee (talk) 15:33, 13 March 2014 (GMT)

That wanted some template changes first. It will now display, if you add {{#define:showcollection|1}} prior to the table. It might need a while till it will show it for all books though, the wiki needs some time to process the load queue introduced by changing {{Book Summary}} first. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:09, 13 March 2014 (GMT)
That's great! Thanks for the quick response. I'll try it out soon. --Jimeee (talk) 16:24, 13 March 2014 (GMT)

ESO Place Names[edit]

Hey Alfwyn, I see you are continuing to add to the growing list of ESO Redirects from Previous Names! If you are making any more updates to place names, it is preferred if deprecated info remains noted on the page rather than simply being deleted or relegated to an edit summary. —Legoless (talk) 15:26, 12 May 2020 (GMT)

Will try to remember. Although in that case I think it was just considered a mistake and fixed quite fast. --Alfwyn (talk) 15:50, 12 May 2020 (GMT)
Would we still include the name if it was only present in a PTS and never made it to live? Often times these are mistakes and aren't intended to be labeled as such, I don't think we should include these sorts of things as notes, as it was caught before the game went "live". An example of this is Officers' Quarters in Solitude, used to be Officer's Quarters. I don't think that should be included as a "previous name" as a note. I think we should restrict that to names the location had in a live game. Jeancey (talk) 17:41, 12 May 2020 (GMT)
Historically we haven't been recording the majority of PTS names since they change all the time without making it to live, but I wouldn't object. —Legoless (talk) 21:05, 12 May 2020 (GMT)

Help categorize this file[edit]

I've seen you working with the furnishings quite a bit so I thought maybe you could help figure out this image. File:ON-item-furnishing-Jeweled_Skull_of_Ayleid_Kings.png It's currently unused with no associated page for it either. Is it actually a furnishing? Thuraya Salaris (talk) 00:44, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Yes, it is a furnishing, but the image is neither square, nor the right format (jpg). The actual used one can be found at File:ON-item-furnishing-Jeweled_Skull_of_Ayleid_Kings.jpg.
Thank you for your help on this. Thuraya Salaris (talk) 06:53, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
