After being killed by Gaenor far too many times, even with characters level 30 and up, I decided to pay dirty. I had read that his luck was incredibly high. I started to make potions. Lots and lots of potions. First fortify intelligence potions, make three, drink three, over and over. Once my intelligence was over 2000, I made fortify luck potions, got luck up to 2500. Gaenor became toast shortly thereafter. I won't resort to this in other fights, but he was just so annoying--GalenaGalaxian 21:17, 15 December 2006 (EST)

Just a little hint... I have just killed him using 3 (three) exclusive health restore potions, and no particularly great skills besides longsword and light armor at 100. Gaenor is a good magic reflector, so a strong non-magical weapon is of much help - and Chrysamere did a great job indeed.

This is considered a tough fight? If so, what difficulty level do you guys play at? I had no trouble at all killing him with my level 37 woodelf (100 blunt weapon, 90+ heavy armor, 100 strength). I just stood there hammering away with sunder and he fell over without doing any serious damage to me.

Lol, it took me ages. Even Dagoth Ur, Almalexia and Vivec didn't bother me that much, and I played Tribunal with the difficulty slider all the way down (easiest possible). A simple Bosmer being stronger than Vivec. Imagine this: Gaenor knocking on Vivecs door and asking him for a million, coming back two days later and being stronger than the man-god of Vvardenfell himself. Quite a shame that since Azura's star is in my posession, gaenor can't have it in this scene, thus wasting Vivec's soul. He's quite the nuisance anyway. - Korunox 13:25, 15 February 2008 (EST)

I'd say it's hard if you only have an enchanted weapon or have taken a more 'Jack-of-all trades' approach to your levelling (most of your skills are high-mid, as opposed to min-maxing). Using a straight Daedric Dai-katana and respectable armor skills, I burned right through him. But my mage just avoided him till he got short blade and light armor (his minor, lesser used combat skills) up. Having a good agility from that helped as well, I think. 208.79.244.67 14:36, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Gaenor is the only enemy I haven't been able to beat with a level 1 character at 100+ difficulty so I guess he definitely deserves to be called the most difficult enemy (Nord mage with frost scrolls is the best I came up with). 88.194.21.147 12:59, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

There is a way to get Gaenor stuck. If you have good speed and Acrobatics, or a Jump spell, you can lure him east of the temple and jump atop the rock formation (the one with The Common Tongue nearby). If done right, Gaenor will run into the cleft of the rocks and be unable to reach you. Once he's thus pinned, he makes one of the best punching bags for practicing ranged skills, like Marksman, Spear, and Blunt Weapon (specifically staves). Elemental damage spells will also work, provided you can resist their effects if they get reflected. I once used him to max out my Spear skill, and by the time it was done, all of his ebony armor was destroyed. The only problem is that once his HP are low, you can't easily heal him, because he'll likely reflect that too. If you're trying to beat him in a straight up fight though, anything that fortifies your agility or luck is the way to go. If you're a werewolf from Bloodmoon, you can kill him in a couple of hits, though you'll have to sneak up to avoid alerting the other NPCs outside the temple.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 23:15, 14 February 2013 (GMT)

Morrowind Code Patch[edit]

  • Tips for spellcasters:

- Morrowind Code Patch is very useful to increase spellmaker spell magnitude to 1000. Willpower and school of magic bonuses granted to Aundae vampires are a tremendous help in this situation.

- For some reason, "Command Humanoid 50 levels for x seconds on Touch" doesn't work on Gaenor, although it actually should (he is level 50).

- The best way to cope with Gaenor is to use Calm Humanoid on him (this spell can't be reflected):

1) Calm Humanoid 130 pts. for 16 sec. in 10 feet (for some reason Gaenor requires an insane magnitude to be calmed; fortunately, you don't need a long duration in this situation)

2) Fortify Conjuration 793 pts for 3 sec (or whatever magnitude your spellcaster is capable of, needed for the following spell)

2) Command Humanoid 60 levels for 30 sec on one of the Elite Ordinators that are running around in the area (they are lvl 60)

3) Get the Ordinator close to Gaenor, go into Sneak mode, cast invisibility on self

4) When Calm Humanoid wears off, Gaenor will attack the ordinator. Don't count on the latter, Gaenor will kill him. Instead, use the following spell on them both:

Disintegrate Weapon 230 pts in 10 feet (needs to be re-cast 15-20 times, depending on how often Gaenor reflects the spell. I recommend un-equipping your own weapon while you cast this spell lest he reflects the spell back on you). This has a double benefit: If you disintegrate Gaenor's weapon, he won't be able to break through Sanctuary 100% with his bare fists and the ordinator carries a weapon that is extremely useful for enchantment purposes (80 pts enchantment!).

5) After disintegrating both weapons, re-cast Calm Humanoid to calm the ordinator in the first place. Gaenor will turn hostile again, but if you cast 100% Sanctuary, he won't be able to break through without his sword. Cast:

Fortify Restoration ca. 250 pts for 3 sec on self

Resist Poison 100% for 30 sec on self (needed due to Gaenor's Reflect Spell ability)

Poison 52 pts for 10 sec on Touch on Gaenor

6) Don't forget to pickpocket the ordinator's broken weapon! Now go fix it and enchant it with Azura's Star for a permanent Fortify Intelligence bonus!

- Demoralize Humanoid is also extremely effective in this case, as Gaenor ignores Sanctuary (even if it's at 100%) as long as he is using his weapon and due to the fact that Demoralize cannot be reflected. However, due to a bug in the engine, Demoralize doesn't work properly. In order to simulate the "demoralized" AI behaviour, wait for Gaenor to hit you once, then cast Demoralize on him, then jump into the air. Since you are out of reach for a second, Gaenor will get scared and run away. A PC with maxed out Speed attribute and Vampire Speed bonus should have little difficulty to catch up with him.

Use Poison on him, as he is highly resistant to magic. Cast 100% Resistance to Poison on self before the fight, because Gaenor reflects most of the spells.

The TES lists Gaenor's health at 500, but in fact it's a little higher. Due to high Reflection you really shouldn't bother with Weakness to Poison, but use Poison right away. Here's the spell combination you should use against Gaenor:

Fortify Restoration ca. 250 pts for 3 sec on self

Resist Poison 100% for 30 sec on self

+

Demoralize Human 100 pts for x seconds on Touch. Duration depends on your willpower and Illusion skill. At least 30 seconds are recommended. Aundae vampires get a high bonus to willpower, Illusion (Demoralize) and Destruction (Poison), which are very useful during this fight (beware that due to a bug, the Demoralize Humanoid effect is set as Mysticism. The Unofficial Morrowind Patch fixes this problem). Jump into the air to update the AI.

Poison 52 pts for 10 sec on Touch will poison Gaenor and he will run away, dying slowly. If he reflects the spell, try again. And again. It may take 5-6 times, but eventually you will succeed.

Since you need to run after Gaenor, ensure that your fatigue stays at 100%, otherwise the spell success chance will drop. It's best to create a permanent item enchantment that will restore ca. 8 points fatigue per second (should be sufficient to keep your fatigue at max at all times, unless you are encumbered).

I moved all this from the article because it's not the best piece of writing I've ever seen, and it all depends on the MCP, which not everybody uses or can use. Parts are also wrong (Gaenor's health isn't "a little higher" than 500). Calliope 07:52, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

His health IS higher than 500 hp, because I tried using Poison 50 pts for 10 sec. and it didn't kill him. 50x10=500, which means he must have more than 500, since he has no resistance to poison. Maybe it depends on the difficulty setting, I don't know. --WRFan 17:07, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Ah, ok, now I know why he has more than 500 hp - that's because he regenerates 1 hit point per round (every 3 seconds). That's part of his ability (gaenor_abilities). --WRFan 22:53, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
