Anyone tried giving millions?[edit]

Has Anyone tried giving him money in the millions? I got to the hundred thousands. But he asks you for one maybe ten million gold. I've been wondering: What if you did have that much. IT IS POSSIBLE!!! But very hard. Just keep selling High Ordinator armor to the smith. But I've never gotten around to it, as to that could take a VERY long time. I myself carry around 700k. — Unsigned comment by Example (talkcontribs) at 21:12 on 28 April 2010 (GMT)

It IS possible, but there's no benefit to doing so. The end results are exactly the same no matter how much you give him, and you'll never get any of it back, so the wisest decision is simply to not give him anything. --TheRealLurlock Talk 07:39, 17 July 2007 (EDT)
If I recall correctly, at one point in his dialog tree, if you attempt to give him the insane amount he asks for, he calls you a liar, saying that you couldn't possibly have that much gold on your person, and that you're just making fun of him. This results in him getting just as mad at you as if you'd said no, so the end result is the same. 72.28.170.64 09:56, 17 July 2007 (EDT)
on an unrelated note, they're not kidding when they say that he's one of the toughest enemies in the game. I fought him recently with a mage on difficulty 100, and he reflected, resisted, and otherwise shrugged off everything that I threw at him, all while taking away about half my health every time he swung his sword. I finally resorted to the caster's universal plan B: summons. It worked, but he hacked through at least ten golden saints and who knows how many other critters--while being swarmed, mind you--before they finally took him down. even with custom "summon five things at once" spells i was having trouble casting fast enough to keep creatures in the field. That same trick took down Vivec in literally half the time.--Reason.decrystallized 17:44, 12 December 2007 (EST)

Gaenor's Toughness[edit]

I know I've personally complete Tribunal including killing Gaenor before level 30, so it is definitely quite possible. Obviously, beating him varies based on player equipment and strategy (magic doesn't cut it). Still, saying that level 45 is 'recommended' to beat him is wildly over estimating his strength, so I lowered the number back to 30. --Ratwar 01:07, 22 February 2008 (EST)

I know that I beat the main quest at lvl 26 and before that I beat Tribunal, it was with relative ease, which is to say that I killed him in two tries. I recall that the dungeon with slaves (Addamasartus?) close to Seyda Neen was a hell of a lot more trouble (since I decided to walk to balmora after getting off the ship). So in fact Gaenor was 'easier' at lvl 26- than Addamasartus was at lvl 1 (hence relatively easy) — Unsigned comment by Korunox (talkcontribs) at 11:56 on 22 February 2008 (GMT)
I've also beaten him in the mid-20s, but more through blind luck than judgement. One time, I threw a couple of darts (from the Black Dart mob) at him. Of course, he threw one back and almost killed me, but I still won. --Gaebrial 10:20, 23 February 2008 (EST)
Any magic user with a powerful reflect spell or the royal signet ring and ranged spell could easily kill Gaenor. As firing at spell at Gaenor will most likely bounce right off of him and if you casted a reflect spell fast it enough or just have a constant effect reflect item (royal signet ring) it will bounce back.Reflect can only reflect spells once and since Gaenor already reflected the spell he will be forced to take the damage.
Warning:Spell casters may want to cast a powerful Sanctuary,Shield,Elemental(Fire,Shock,&,Frost)Shield,Restore Health,Fortify Agility,Fortify Luck,Fortify Speed,Fortify Light,Heavy,Medium Armor Skill, and Fortify Unarmored Skill spell,As If your a beginner trying to do this Gaenor may just kill you right after combat begins or He may kill you before you get to a safe place to cast ranged spells.Maybe even a summon spell to distract him while you run or shoot at him. — Unsigned comment by 71.104.221.108 (talk) at 03:07 on 28 September 2009 (GMT)
I got him with the boots of blinding speed, cuirass of the saviour and a good bow. Just kept running backwards shooting him full of arrows, he didn't even get one hit in. Don't lure him up the stairs though, as he tends to get stuck following you around a corner. Marcel 06:51, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

OMG ur not kidding[edit]

ok you are right he is soooooooooooooooooooooo hard i mean it took me an hour of slashing to kill him. but im soooooooooooooo proud because i just killed him on my first try( im lvl 7 an only got 74 health too so try figuring that one out). YAY ME!!!! :] (Sdharly 02:38, 18 September 2009 (UTC))

VERY hard...[edit]

Im level 8, I completed the morrowind main quest... Dont ask how i did it. Im glad i was actually loaded with potions from the fight with dagoth ur that i didnt use, and i forgot to sell/store them... I hit him like twice, and took literally 1/24th of his health away, and then he started running away after my second hit... Then i just loaded up with fortify attribute potions that i had and eventually killed him... I stopped paying him after 1,000... 66.188.135.246 02:04, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Epicrules

Rumors[edit]

I'm not sure when, but I think Barenziah mentiones something about "beggars being very rude in Mournhold". Well, like in the article about Ranis, should this information be added? --Kertaw48 14:49, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

It's not just Barenziah - it's a "latest rumor": "Beggars are really becoming a problem in Mournhold. They just won't take 'no' for an answer. Sure, this is Almalexia's City of Love and Charity. But sometimes I want to smack those whining pests." Yeah, I suppose it's worth adding... rpeh •TCE 15:04, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Easy way[edit]

One way to deal with him is to just attack him before talking to him. Unarmed and unarmored, he's a bit hard to hit, but not very difficult to kill.

Of course, there's little point in doing so. You might as well just avoid him. — Unsigned comment by 88.166.211.161 (talk) at 20:48 on 15 June 2010 (GMT)

duplicated gaenor bug[edit]

my game had a bug that after gaenor gets angry, another gaenor appears asking for money, i thought it was the same one so i talked to him again. 2 days later i was running away from 2 angry gaenors. almost shitted my pants when i saw 2 of him there. — Unsigned comment by 93.172.122.150 (talk) at 16:45 on 14 August 2010 (GMT)

How Much???[edit]

I ordered Morrowind yesterday (for my birthday) and I started looking in Morrowind pages. Soon enough I ended in Tribunal, and after wondering a bit I ended up here. I read the page, and he has 770 Luck? How the heck are you supposed to hit this guy? I checked the CS (which I have without the game, although there are many problems), and I saw that his base Luck is 255, but he has an ability that gives him 500 Luck, making it 755, plus 15 from his amulet it is 770. But as I said above, how the heck are you supposed to hit him? --Rigas Papadopoulos • TalkDeeds 07:38, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Keep trying. He's a tough fight. rpeh •TCE 09:27, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
According to the CS, he also has 80-100 Resist Magicka, 50-100 Reflect, and 1 pt Restore health from the same ability. Not only is he hard to hit, he also regenerates. See above for a few strategies. --Keyword314 09:18, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

armor[edit]

if you cast bound armor on him will he put his armor on after it wears off? (Eddie the head 05:40, 29 January 2011 (UTC))

Really Easy[edit]

I'm at a relativaly low level (17), but I beat this easily. I think it's because my lv. 100 long blade skill countered his luck, he wasn't hard to hit. If you have a high level of any weapon skill, I think he probably isn't very difficult. Halfstache 20:41, 5 July 2011 (UTC)halfstache

I dont know but you could try drinking alot of grief. — Unsigned comment by 160.7.243.152 (talk) at 02:15 on 18 November 2011

Cleanup of Notes section[edit]

Marking this page's Notes section as needing cleanup. As one of the toughest opponents in the game, understandably, there are a lot of enthusiastic suggestions on how to defeat him. Unfortunately:

  • Some boldly claim to be the trick to beating him
  • Others have really specific info on very personal playstyles (eg. notes that apply only to Nords, level 25 characters, alchemists, summoners, clients of Calvus Horatius, etc.)
  • Still many others rely on strategies already covered in MW:Blind, MW:Hints or MW:Glitches; strategies that apply to all enemies, not just Gaenor.

I can try to clean this up at a later date, when I have more time. However, if someone does it before then, that will also be great. Salamangkero (talk) 15:38, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Great idea! Dumping all the testimonials below. Tlist (talk) 21:26, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
  • The main trick to beating him is using Fortify Luck to boost your Luck stat above his, which is 770. You can simply avoid him until you find enough Fortify Luck potions or scrolls during your adventures, or create your own potions using Alchemy. Alternatively, Ureso Drath in Ald'ruhn Temple is a restocking vendor of Scrolls of The Gambler's Prayer. Simply boost your Luck to 1000, then use whatever means at your disposal to dispatch him before you chip out of Luck. With enough Luck, Ring of Toxic Cloud can take him down with a single shot in about 10 seconds. Bring potions of Cure Poison just in case.
  • The trick to beating him, if you are around level 25 (half his level), is to avoid a "stand-up fight". Stay out of arm's reach as much as possible, have a large quantity of Restore Health, Magicka, and Endurance potions, use long-lasting gear, and fortify whatever attacks you are using by whatever means you have available, so you can get some hits in. One technique is to keep him busy fighting as many summons as possible and hit him from behind, then dance out of the way when he turns to face you, keeping at least one summoned minion fighting him at all times. A weapon that does additional damage on striking, for multiple seconds, is highly recommended. It is not helpful to try to use the mercenary companion Calvus Horatius in this endeavor; Gaenor will kill him quickly, even if Calvus is well stocked with healing potions, because Calvus will not take them until low enough in Health that a good blow from Gaenor will do more damage than Calvus has Health remaining. It can easily take 45 minutes of realtime gaming (in the successful attempt) to beat Gaenor at around this level – a slow war of attrition. Beware hitting the courtyard's various bystanders with ranged and area-of-effect attacks, as well as summoned Atronachs. If you're melee-oriented, you may find it easier to beat him in the outer water canal; though this hampers spellcasting and missiles, it also slows him down a little, especially if you have Swift Swim.
  • Casting Frost spells at Gaenor while under the effects of 100% Resist Frost (such as being a Nord) will kill him easily. His Resist Magicka ability provides no protection against Frost and in the event of the spell being reflected, 100% Resist Frost will prevent you from taking any damage. Creating a duration spell with a total of 500 damage or more should kill him in a single spell. This advice applies to Fire, Shock, and Poison as well. Make sure to also account for his constant Restore Health 1 pt ability.
  • You can exploit the Boots of Blinding Speed to vastly increase your chances to land a hit on Gaenor. It has a 100% Blind effect which is bugged to increase your hit rate instead of decreasing it, making Gaenor's high luck far less of an issue. Combined with the boot's high mobility, the boots make the fight easier.
  • An easy way to kill Gaenor is to use Sujamma. Every bottle will increase your strength by 50 points for 1 minute, and drinking a lot of them at the same time will increase your strength so much that you can kill Gaenor in just a few hits. You can buy a lot of bottles from Fara in Sadrith Mora or even from the Mudcrab merchant (although from him they will be more expensive since you can't increase his Disposition or use Mercantile to lower the price). They will both have infinite restock of Sujamma and you just need to close and reopen the exchange window to have new units. Use enough Sujamma to increase your strength up to at least 1000 (the more the better) and you should be able to kill Gaenor with any weapon in a few hits.
  • Another trick: you had to stand on the isolated single boulder or on the biggest boulder (if you see the temple's entrance in front of you, so your left) armed with a bow and arrows. Drink a lot of fortifying speed + agility + strength + luck potions. Tested with 424 of speed, 163 of agility, 1797 of luck and 495 of strength. You had to buy a lot of: moon sugar, shalk resin, roobrush, sload soap, ash yam, dreugh wax, corkbulb root and guar hide (Alchemy > 200)
  • There is an easy way to beat him through abusing the soul trap glitch, although some might look down on using such tactics. If you create a custom spell that uses the soul trap glitch to create permanent summoned creatures such as Golden Saints, you can create several of these creatures at once for little magicka. Be prepared to bring several restore magicka potions regardless, as it can take up to 50 Golden Saints attacking him at once to bring him down. It will take some time as they don't actually do enough damage to outpace his natural healing, but each strike deals damage to his equipment. Eventually his sword and armor will break, meaning that he won't be able to meaningfully damage your minions and your summoned creatures will begin to do more damage.
  • If you have the Royal Signet Ring, using magic on him is safe, though it is advisable to finish the Tribunal main quest before obtaining this item, as Helseth is essential.
