  3. Get the dagger from Arnsa.
  4. Return to Geon Auline.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

You'll find Geon Auline in his mansion in the Godsreach district. He mentions that he is searching for a rare Droth Dagger: one of a set of personalised silver daggers crafted for a group of Dunmer nobles in the 2nd Age. Although Geon already owns three daggers belonging to the set, he knows his neighbor, the widow Arnsa Thendas, owns the final dagger needed for his collection. He hopes that Arnsa will part with it ahead of an upcoming estate sale that she has organised in the wake of her husband's death, to help alleviate the financial burden he left behind. Geon notes that, while the husband was a nobleman, he amassed quite a bit of debt in his waning years and thus left Arnsa in a difficult position.

Geon presents two options: if you can buy the dagger from Arnsa, he will gladly compensate you for your purchase. On the other hand, if you can acquire it by other means, he will reward you either way.

You can find Arnsa in Thendas Manor located next door. While she says the estate sale isn't ready yet, she will ask if you're interested in a particular item and will offer to sell you the dagger for 600 gold. If you do so, she'll warn you to be on the lookout for Geon, as she considers him to be a 'nasty little man' who she has refused to sell the dagger to out of spite. Alternatively, you can lie and claim you knew Arnsa's husband during his days in the Imperial Legion; if Arnsa's disposition toward you was above 80, she will offer you the dagger as a token to remember her husband by. You can also acquire the dagger by simple theft if you pick the lock on the level 80 chest located nearby.

No matter your choice, Geon isn't interested in how you acquired the dagger and will tell you he'd rather not know. He will pay you 800 gold to cover your expenses.

Notes[edit]

  • If you tell Arnsa that you knew her husband from the Fighter's Guild, she will tell you that her husband was never in the Fighter's Guild, her disposition drops by 50 points, and she will refuse to talk to you any more, preventing acquisition of the dagger through dialogue.
  • If you sell the dagger, Geon is outraged, and his disposition drops 40 points. Similarly, if you tell him that you want to keep the dagger for yourself, his disposition drops by 20 points.
  • If you exit the manor and re-enter the cell, Geon will have placed the Droth dagger on his table beside the others.
  • You will not be able to start this quest if there are ashstorms in Mournhold (i.e. you have completed A Show of Power but not The Mad God), as Geon's greeting will be replaced with a generic one regarding the ashstorm. You can, however, use the console to start the quest by entering: journal "MS_EstateSale" 10 and addtopic "Droth Dagger".
  • Imperial Legion gear can be seen on display in Thendas Manor, serving as a clue to the correct dialogue option to take with Arnsa.
  • If you have already acquired the Droth Dagger when you first meet Geon, he won't mention the dagger, but if you pick it as a conversation topic he'll ask if you've got it yet, so you can give it to him, immediately completing the quest.

Bugs[edit]

  • After returning the dagger to Geon, a script updates the Journal to non-existent step 80 rather than step 70. This causes Geon to keep asking for the return of the dagger.
    • This can be fixed by entering the command SetJournalIndex "MS_EstateSale", 70
  • After he places the dagger on the table, you can easily steal it again. While he continues to offer the "Droth Dagger" topic, and you can choose to sell it to him again, he responds as if you don't have it, so this is not a source of infinite cash in 800g increments.
