Site quality

I would just like to comment on the excellent quality of this site. Compared with many gaming sites and other wikis this site is of a first rate quality. Well done everyone who has contributed. — Unsigned comment by 203.214.2.198 (talk) on 21. September 2007

Agreed, this wiki rocks :). Thanks to you all.— Unsigned comment by 58.167.35.122 (talk) on 1. June 2008
There's no better site for The Elder Scrolls in my opinion. One thing though as anyone else noticed the site is slow to load? I don't think it's my connection, everything else is running fine (youtube, nexopia, facebook ect.). Has anyone else noticed that? - Road Virus — Unsigned comment by Road Virus (talkcontribs) on 11. I want to say the same thing and believe me I have great pretentions from a site.--89.47.146.146 05:08, 12 September 2008 (EDT)Theron
This site only loads slow at certain times of day, which I assume is because there are too many users trying to access this fantastic site. Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 02:44, 16 October 2008 (EDT)
I think that this site is great, but I do have to agree that it can have slower loading times. I guess it's because its so massive!Matt360 432 16:47, 6 December 2008 (EST)
This wiki has been an immense resource for me. I always refer to this Wiki when starting a quest, and read the Lore section while bored on the computer. When I begin playing Morrowind again, I shall refer to this Wiki as well. Nesskid 22:01, 20 January 2009 (EST)
agreed the best, and probably the most complete site about any game ever — Unsigned comment by Chubatta (talkcontribs) on 27 February 2009

Suggestions

i think it would be a good idea for there to be a page for suggested things at each level and by that i mean "if you were at level 3 you can do these things" and then have a list of suggested things to do at that level --Feartheflame 17:53, 13 April 2008 (EDT)

This would lead to a large amount of subjectivity as people add their own favorite ideas. We already have Quest Timing for a brief overview and I don't think there's much more to be added. –RpehTCE 04:52, 14 April 2008 (EDT)
i realize this but it would only be suggestions...everybody could add what they think would be useful to do at that level while still letting the player do there own thing Feartheflame 23:57, 14 April 2008 (EDT)
Such a page would quickly get out of hand as everybody would add their own favorite quest order and delete everybody else's. We have enough opinion pages on the site without creating another one. –RpehTCE 01:03, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
Well, if the article listed things like armor and weapon availability, daedric artifact quests and other unique level-required quests accessible, as well as enemies encountered, but only briefly as they have specific info elsewhere. -Nesskid 22:15, 21 January 2009 (EST)
It could work, but we'd have to be careful about it. --Debatra 22:27, 21 January 2009 (EST)
I could see a section on Oblivion:Level (which apparently doesn't exist yet, though it probably should - possibly modeled after the Morrowind equivalent) that lists all quests with level reqs in order of their level req. Though in Oblivion, this would basically be just the Daedric quests, which are already conveniently listed at Oblivion:Daedric Quests (and also that one quest in the MQ that requires a Daedric artifact, though that's not so much a level req as a prerequisite quest. There's also that Lost Boy Caverns quest). Now in Morrowind, this would be a far greater list, possibly even too large to include on the Morrowind:Level page - I'm not sure off-hand exactly what percentage of MW quests have a level req. Depending on the size of this list, which we'd have to determine first, it could either be included there or maybe on its own page. But keep in mind in either case, I'm only including quests with a fixed level requirement, in other words, not suggestions but requirements. This would put a clear cap on what information should and should not be included in such a list. If I want to complete the Main Quest at level 2 in either game, I can, so we should only lists quests which cannot be completed before a certain level. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:36, 21 January 2009 (EST)
Not just for quests, but something like this:

Level ? --- You can now do these quests you could not before: (List of Quests requiring Level ?)

You can now find/purchase ??? Armor and Weapons.

You will now encounter: (List of Enemies now added).

(Other useful information need there be any)

Something like that, but of course formatted correctly and all that. -Nesskid 08:33, 22 January 2009 (EST)

The problem with that is that the number of things that could be included on such a list would be ridiculously long. Especially if you included things like leveled items, which I think we probably shouldn't - Oblivion:Leveled Items does that pretty well already. But even just the leveled creatures list would be somewhat cumbersome, since there are different leveled lists depending on different locations, boss creatures, etc. I could see including what levels different types of base armor appear at, but even that is variable, because some types can be found earlier being worn by boss NPCs. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:02, 22 January 2009 (EST)
I see. I don't think anything other than a list of names is required for enemies, each linking to their entry on the page they are detailed on, but even then, the list could be rather large. I think the only reason for the article is convenience though. Instead of looking at Armor and other pages, all the basic info is in one place. For example: I level up to Level 10, and on one page I can see the things bundled with that level up. It's not absolutely necessary, but it makes it a lot easier to find the info I would need. -Nesskid 17:04, 22 January 2009 (EST)

Featured Article

The "Current Featured Article" has been Oblivion:Traps for nearly a month, i don't know if it's changed monthly or just whenever someone feels it needs to be changed, but maybe it should be changed again? ArtemisTheModder 10:37, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

It gets changed every six months or so, since the administrators tend to have a lot of other stuff going on, and very few articles get nominated/voted on anyways. Currently, only one other article is close to obtaining featured status, and it needs more votes. You can read more about it here: UESPWiki:Featured Articles.--Ratwar 11:23, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

WHY

sorry but i do not know where to put these i recently said that a filled grand soul gem could be easily found at the acrane university it was deleted why — Unsigned comment by 60.229.54.134 (talk) on 5. June 2008

You put it in a page called The Hardest Difficulty Strategy Guide where it is not relevant [1]. Since there's no quest that requires a filled soulgem it's difficult to see where it could be relevant. –RpehTCE 08:33, 5 June 2008 (EDT)
Sorry I didn't saw that post but there is a quest that does not require a filled sould genm but 2 (on Telvanni Stronghold) but to solve that is easy but I won't tell you, Divayth Fyr tells you better! — Unsigned comment by 89.47.146.146 (talk) on 11. September 2008
Yes, but that's for Morrowind and not Oblivion. The original post was about an edit to an Oblivion page. –RpehTCE 05:21, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

Search from browser

For some reason, when I try to add this page's search feature to Firefox's search bar, it says "Firefox could not download the search plugin for uesp.net". I don't know if a Firefox search plugin has been created or if there is one that's simply not working, but I'd really like to be able to search this fine website from my browser. I don't have any clue as to how to go about accomplishing this, thus I suggest that someone that does, do so. O0Jelly0o 01:09, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

I don't know about adding it to Firefox's search bar, but if you're using the Google toolbar, you can right-click on the search-box and select "Generate Custom Search...". This will add a UESP search button to your Google toolbar so that you can simply type your search terms into the Google toolbar and click the UESP button to search UESP. --GuildKnightTalk2me 21:03, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

Bethesda

Does anyone know how i could contact the afore mentioned Bethesda? Thanks to all. Jesus lover 17:14, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Check their website. Most corporate websites have a Contact section where you can (surprisingly) contact them. --Saruuk 11:30, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

oblivion mis-spelling.

has anyone noticed in 'oblivion random world: 2' that one of the surrounding towers labeled 'tornado' has its corresponding gate spelled 'tordando'?

also, in the tornado tower, the lever to open said 'tordando' gate is also mis-labeled in that it says that it opens the 'hurricane' gate.

just something i noticed today, and i was wondering if anyone else had.

you guys are so thorough here at UESP, that i was surprised that you hadn't mentioned it.

that is all. :) — Unsigned comment by 68.75.184.149 (talk) on 29. July 2008

It will say in the construction set if its misspellt or not-but since I have it on an xbox, I can't say for certain. Maybe post it on that oblivion world talk page. You might get a proper answer there. Matt360 432 16:53, 6 December 2008 (EST)
Another mis-spelling I found was the name of Antoine in the Bay Stables. The woman inside tells you to collect the horse from "Antione" after you have bought it :)
We're not interested in trying to document every misspelling in the game. And this discussion has nothing to do with discussion of the main page itself, which is the only purpose of this talk page (as stated at the top of the page) -- unless you're suggesting that these are typos that appear on the main page, in which case I'm not seeing them. So further additions to this list really are not necessary. --NepheleTalk 15:12, 13 December 2008 (EST)

Site Changes

Just so I know, is a new format/style of this site being played around with? I'm getting white background and different logos and I just wondered if it was something that the site admin are working on, or if there's something odd going on with my cookies? — Unsigned comment by 87.127.79.8 (talk) on 11 August 2008

As you've probably noticed, the site isn't performing very well right now. There's an upgrade in progress and some features of the site aren't working correctly, including the skins. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon. –RpehTCE 10:28, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
This was all due to an 'user error' during the upgrade process (by myself). It may take a day or two for the site to settle back to normal while I figure out exactly what I did wrong (and try not to do it again). Ahhh...the wonders of testing everything on a live server. -- Daveh 15:53, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Well, so long as I know it isn't only me, all's good. Just, could you post a note on the main page, or here on the talk page next time? 67.60.187.161 16:03, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
I agree Zulu 01:04, 12 August 2008 (EDT)
The reason I (and I imagine my fellow admins) didn't post a news article was that it would have required editing three pages on an already slow server to post a note that most people wouldn't have been able to read anyway. I think you can assume in future that if the site is acting weird, we already know about it. –RpehTCE 01:24, 12 August 2008 (EDT)

Difficulty and Followers

(Question moved to Oblivion talk:Followers#Difficulty Question) --NepheleTalk 23:25, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

An Idea.

I was thinking this would be the best talk page to put my idea. What if some dear Uesp editors/visitors visited the roleplaying page, and tried it out. Now they want to quit, but they can't get those ideas out of their head. Could a page be made by me helping them ease out of the roleplaying life? This personally happened to me, so I know there are others out their who can't adventure because they are guilty about fast traveling, and not sleeping. Ninja Hinder 01:39, 28 September 2008 (EDT)

That sounds quite confusing. I think such a page would only start to get silly. Besides, it has been mentioned at several places on this site that people are free to play the game the way they want. --Timenn < talk > 06:30, 28 September 2008 (EDT)

Bring back the old logo!

Why did you change the logo in the top left of the front page? Original one was much better. — Unsigned comment by 75.191.184.111 (talk) on 11. October 2008

I'm assuming you mean this one? If so, then it is possible to have it shown only for you, but you'll need an account. If you really want to, then you'll need to do the following:
  • Create an account.
  • Create a subpage to your userpage called "User:<YourUsername>/monobook.css"
    • Replace <YourUsername> with the username you chose, obviously.
  • Put the following code in:
    #p-logo a { background:url(http://www.uesp.net/w/skins/common/images/wiki.png) 35% 50% no-repeat !important; }.
That'll mean that whenever you log in with your new account, you'll see the old logo instead of the new one.
One note is that this might slow down the site for you a bit. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 15:34, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
I'm guessing the original poster was the victim of a server glitch. Sometimes when the server is running kind of sluggish, it fails to load the diamond-shaped logo in the corner and instead displays the older square one. (The square one IS the original, but newer members might not be aware of that.) Generally waiting a bit and refreshing will solve the problem, unless the server is REALLY overloaded, in which case you may need to wait longer. Rest assured, however, that we have not changed the logo recently. The diamond-shaped logo has been there for a couple years now. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:47, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

You're right I was seeing the original logo but now I see the newer one. I thought you guys changed the new one to the old one because I have only been here a few weeks. 75.191.184.111 11. October 2008

UESP in the official Xbox 360 magazine

Now, I don't know if this is the place to post it, but it seems the UESP is the fifth finest thing ever to come out of Oblivion :D Just thought I should mention it. There is a thread about it on the forum: http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?t=11047 -- Codex 03:04, 27 December 2008 (EST)

suggestion

Make the main image left, instead of in a table and allow the text to flow around it. The main page looks ugly on smaller resolutions. 68.226.0.35 13:45, 14 January 2009 (EST)

References?

Does UESP have references like Wikipedia does? I think that it would be a great addition to UESP. moocowsrule(talkcontribs) 01:26, 19 January 2009 (EST)

If you mean, do we have extensions such as Cite installed, the answer is yes (see Special:Version for all of the installed extensions). We are working on trying to get more references added, in particular to the Lore pages. An example of a page with fairly complete references is Lore:Black Marsh. --NepheleTalk 01:57, 19 January 2009 (EST)
Sorry, I was talking about references like Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Citing sources). I didn't think about people who aren't accustomed to Wikipedia... moocowsrule(talkcontribs) 02:11, 19 January 2009 (EST)
XD Sorry, that was what I'm talking about. I just haven't seen references on here, so I figured that UESP didn't have them. moocowsrule(talkcontribs) 02:12, 19 January 2009 (EST)

"Did you know..."

I just think the "Did you know..." section in the main page would be better if the articles that appear in it were randomized, or at least changed weekly or monthly. It's been the same ever since I started using this wonderful wiki over a year ago. --190.43.239.146 21:53, 8 February 2009 (EST)

This is how it looked a year ago so it has definitely changed. Anybody can edit that section (go here) but it usually gets a fairly low priority. –RpehTCE 00:42, 9 February 2009 (EST)

Page title header

I'm curious — how come this page doesn't have a "Main Page" header like could be expected? (Though it does if you get there through a redirect.) I'd like to achieve the same effect for another wiki... --Gez 10:05, 13 April 2009 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure it's the "mainpage" system message. It takes the title off any page with that name, which is why the header appears through the redirect, as its name is "Index.php". –RpehTCE 10:27, 13 April 2009 (EDT)
It's being done through a hack in MediaWiki:common.js. About one-third of the way down there's a section starting "This code should make the header on the Main Page go away." Although pretty soon the code won't be in that location any more: it's already been copied to the site's internal Monobook.js file; I need to go through the wiki versions of our js and css pages to clean up the redundancy at some point. --NepheleTalk 10:46, 13 April 2009 (EDT)

The newest news article about Howard saying "no current plans" seems to have been taken off a FALSE Facebook notice for the "Video Games" group. I figured it could have been seen as vandalism to just up and take it off, so I'll write the link to my proof of this statement, and wait for someone else to take it off. http://www.destructoid.com/correction-elder-scrolls-5-not-ruled-out-at-quakecon-144615.phtml Chunk of Ham 01:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
