I think...[edit]

I think this dagger adds one to all skills? My lockpick seemed to be increased by one with it in my inventory. Could only see it when I was actually picking the lock though. Shows 69 in skills, 70 when picking. — Unsigned comment by 184.161.123.181 (talk) at 09:17 on 31 January 2012

Are you sure that wasn't just the skill progress bar that is shown when in the lockpicking mini-game?RIM 16:27, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

1.6 beta patch bug[edit]

I entered the cave as a Stage 1 Vampire (received this quest). I just fed about 6 hours (in game) prior to speaking to Valdr. Cleared the cave in 2 minutes and turned into a Stage 4 Vampire while 3 steps away from the exit. There is no reason why I should've turned into a Stage 4 Vampire then. Anyway, I exited the cave and Valdr stood up and attacked me. I fled and fed again somewhere else. Valdr is now in Falkreath, at the inn, the quest marker is still there but he just gives random regular sentences and it is impossible to finish the quest. — Unsigned comment by 87.242.19.174 (talk) on 13 June 2012

Bug: Quest won't disappear from Questlog[edit]

I found him, healed him (healing hands spell), we talked, I killed the spriggans, he thanked me, gave me the dagger and went to Falkreath. The Journal didnt update and I still got that line in it, under Misc Quests: "Locate Valdrs Hunting Party".

Found a bug[edit]

Found a bug with Valdr. Upon visiting Moss Mother Cavern for the first time, where he's sitting on a log, I didn't even need to give him anything. I talked to him and his initiating dialogue was "thanks for that" and asked me if he should come with me to clear the cave. I'm on the Xbox and have patch 1.8.159.0.7 with no DLCs.166.152.78.93 04:00, 16 February 2013 (GMT)

Bug, maybe?[edit]

I have the quest "Heal Valdr's injuries" and I found online that he was at Moss Mother Cavern. I decided to fast travel there but it was already cleared. When we got there, Valdr was... dead. I went so far as reanimating him and using 'necromantic healing' on him. Nothing worked. ... is there something I can do to fix this?

I didnt heal valdr, killed him instead.Cleared the cavern.Still have the 'heal valdr' quest in my log.Suggestions?I dont suppose he respawns?

Unconfirmed Bugs[edit]

I moved these unconfirmed bugs from the article, as most of them sounds quite unlikely. If you have experienced any of these bugs, please re-add them to the article, but leave an explanation here.

  • Upon initial contact with Valdr, he may skip multiple lines from the dialogue and never mention being injured. Therefore you won't be able to complete the miscellaneous quest objective "Locate Valdr's hunting party".
  • While acting as a quest follower he will make generic comments as if he is a non-hostile NPC rather than a follower, leading to negative comments for things such as sneaking.
  • If you choose to clear the cavern without his assistance, he may reward you normally upon exiting the cavern, only to attack you on sight later in the game upon entering Falkreath's inn.
  • If the cavern is cleared, Valdr starts to speak with you and gives you the dagger. If his speech is interrupted, you can restart it, thus obtaining two daggers.

That first one is incorrectly worded though confirmed, its the one where at higher levels he has enough health to qualify as healed. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:36, 7 September 2013 (GMT)
I just launched the article and re-added the bug, with an attempt at rewording it. --Krusty (talk) 23:58, 7 September 2013 (GMT)
I've experienced the third one, but with the slight difference that I did allow him to come along and help clear the cavern. Later (much later... probably weeks of game-time) I went to Falkreath, and if I enter the inn while he's there (during the day) he turns hostile and attacks me, and the other people in the inn attack me also. At night I can enter the inn safely because he's not there.73.202.62.65 07:38, 6 April 2015 (GMT)
I've re-added it to the page. —Legoless (talk) 15:29, 6 April 2015 (GMT)

Valdr unresponsive on first contact[edit]

While heading back to Castle Volkihar from Shriekwind Bastion i stumbled across Moss Mother Cavern.

Valdr was standing outside it with his back to me. I tried to speak to him but his dialogue would not activate. Not even the generic NPC dialogue. I realised he was frozen in place, floating about an inch off the ground. I tried sprinting into him to break him out of his frozen state. He wouldn't budge. I tried to pickpocket him and deliberately get caught but, just like the dialogue, it wouldn't activate. I tried Unrelenting Force, which solves a lot of similar issues to this, but again it had no effect.

I had no heal other spells so i couldn't try that. I found that although he was totally unable to be activated or moved he could still be hit. I tried to hit him until he was angry, in order to break him out of the glitch, however he would stand their without moving until he died. He would say some generic aggro dialogue while being hit though.

I reloaded and used the console to disable-enable and it worked right away. As soon as he reappeared, he initiated the "thanks for healing me"dialogue, despite the fact i had done no such thing. The skipping the "help me" dialogue may have been the game simply clearing the glitch after the disable-enable i performed or it may be related to the original glitch as i have had him skip the part about healing him before, as have others.

Anyway, this may be worth a note in case anyone else runs into this glitch.

I ran into a similar glitch recently. I found him outside Moss Mother Cavern, and he was floating in the air about knee-high. I couldn't speak with him at all, however he still spoke his initial lines about needing help. I figured I'd just go into the cave and clear it out, and maybe that would advance the quest stage. When I got back outside, he was lying dead on the ground.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 01:55, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Possible workaround for completing quest at higher levels[edit]

Everytime I experienced the bug with his quest I was past level 10.Recently I approached him at level 26 with Heal Other charged and the cursor pointing right at him,as he initiated dialog the spell fired healing him.He spoke his lines, exited dialog, then started dialog again saying thank you for healing him...The quest was able to continue as normal and completed.-- Devilush 19:48, 12 February 2014 (GMT)

Why is he shown as a bandit archer?[edit]

When given the rumor by Valga Vinicia she talks of the whole party as if they came from Falkreath, not as bandits, but hunters? Once you've completed the quest he goes back to Dead Man's Drink, again not really acting the bandit part very well? Biffa (talk) 16:41, 30 May 2014 (GMT)

"Bandit Archer" is his class in the creation kit - I believe it simply determines the level of his skills. I know what you mean though - Iv'e never really liked the way an obscure class (sometimes one that is completely jarring with their actual occupation) in present in the lead. --Jimeee (talk) 16:47, 30 May 2014 (GMT)
I've moved his class to the notes section. --AN|L (talk) 16:51, 30 May 2014 (GMT)

Healing Hands[edit]

One of the fixes for Valdr not talking with you is supposed to be using Healing Hands on him. I tried both that and Grand Healing until the console verified that his health wasn't getting any higher, but neither had any effect. Either this fix doesn't work at all, or it's dependent on something else, like level. Can anyone confirm that this works when you can't speak with him? Robin Hood  (talk) 07:30, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

I had the no-talk bug and used "Heal Others" on him. Worked after the second bar of mana was depleted.Caiburn (talk) 21:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Valdr hostile and unresponsive[edit]

Make sure you don't have Falkreath bounty on you when you first approach him. Otherwise, he will be stuck in place (either sitting on a log or standing) and randomly switch between quest voiceover (i.e. asking for a heal) and generic hostile taunts, without the option to initialize dialog. Traveling to Falkreath and paying your bounty will allow you to resume quest as normal. I had 40 gold bounty at the time.

The first time I got there I didn't know I had bounty on me so I tried the following:

  • use Unrelenting Force - killed him instantly because he only has 1 HP
  • give myself Healing hands (through console) - healed him, but as soon as he got more than 1 HP, he got up and attacked me
  • use resetai - makes him sit on log if he's not already sitting
  • disable/enable - same thing as resetai
  • use console to set relationship status to 4 - does nothing
  • set aggression to 0 using console followed by resetai - this stopped him from being hostile and allowed me to proceed with the dialog (even though I had bounty).

I figured out the proper fix after coming to Falkreath, realizing I have a bounty and reloading a save to test it out. --E.T. (talk) 16:44, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Valdr is immune to paralysis[edit]

I have been paralyzing (using reverse-pickpocketed potions) all of the NPCs in Skyrim to 'issue' them new weapons. When I attempted on him, I got a notice saying he couldn't be paralyzed. Probably just another oddity about this guy...Csjimmy 04:08, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Oh, and upon getting caught by him for pickpocketing, he says/does nothing, but evidently becomes 'hostile', as you can no longer sleep or wait "while enemies are nearby". Tested multiple times. After a day away from the inn, I can return and he is no longer hostile. Rinse and repeat, without variation. Csjimmy 04:36, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
I believe the reason that no bounty occurs (and the other NPCs don't seen to care) is that he is classed as a bandit--who are legal to pickpocket. He obviously doesn't like it, hence the hostility, but no legal trouble ensues. Csjimmy (talk) 04:36, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

"I'll be back" option[edit]

If you use this and then clear the cave, Valdr will be dead on the log when you emerge.
