Talking to him[edit]

How do you even approach him without him becoming hostile? He's always in the back yard of the manor, and whenever you enter he turns hostile. I tried talking to him through the gate on the lower side of the temple, but even when I approach the gate he becomes hostile. Darktangent 17:32, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

I had the same problem. I wanted to see the dialogue - I'd went to all that effort to get his debt forgiven - so I eventually had to use a Calm effect so I could initiate dialogue. That's your best bet, I think. 70.112.232.71 03:14, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
I also had to deal with this problem. The two doors which require keys will make him hostile, but if you head behind the building to the gate which has an expert lock, he will walk by and turn his back to you, then you may speak to him through that gate. Hope this helps. 68.111.212.11 07:12, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
He was hostile to me even at the back gate that can be picked. He chased me outside the yard (helpfully opening the gate for me) and was killed by a guard. Oh well. It would have been easy enough to kill him anyway, but I had wanted to try out the "your debt is erased" dialog. — Unsigned comment by 174.21.129.4 (talk) at 03:06 on 15 January 2012 (GMT)

Level 1?[edit]

Today I did that quest and tried to use pacify on him but it didn't work, "target is too powerful for Calm", so he certainly isn't a level 1 npc, rather, his level seems to depend on the player character's level. --Nv4dispbluescreen (talk) 19:53, 27 October 2012 (GMT)

Strange that it didn't work, but he is level 1 in the game data, and not leveled. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:18, 27 October 2012 (GMT)
He is between level 34 - 41 as i was able to get him to stop attacking me with Harmony and the perks Hypnotic Gaze and Kindred Mage. Martingolding96 (talk) 10:23, 3 September 2013 (GMT)
The game data is not wrong. He is based on a template which is based on another template which is based on yet another template. Every one of these is level 1. If you are on PC then you do not need to guess, you can easily use the Console to find it, otherwise whatever guesswork you do is irrelevant, we work with facts. Except when the game data is outdated. Patch 1.9 changed him to leveled: Vald@CSList. --Alfwyn (talk) 19:46, 2 January 2014 (GMT)

Possible bug fix after Dragonborn dlc on the ps3.[edit]

I killed Vald and finished the main quest-line for the Thieves guild, but I also had the option of clearing his debt on my misc quest list that I never bother to do beforehand. I went through the steps, and after I acquired the letter from Maven the quest cleared itself from my misc list as if I already handed it to Vald making it no longer visible as it use to be before this dlc was installed. - BlackOp (ps3) — Unsigned comment by 50.88.102.49 (talk) at 19:35 on 17 February 2013 (GMT)

Are you sure it is the Dragonborn DLC and not the patch fixing it? —MortenOSlash (talk) 22:57, 17 February 2013 (GMT)
No, in fact I have not tested the last patch before Dragonborn update so it could of been the patch just before. Thanks for reminding me as we had a long gap on updates, but I did have the problem where the quest wouldn't clear itself in the same order before these said updates on the Ps3. It used to bug out after Vald was already gone staying in your misc quest forever, this time it just clears itself which is good. I do find it surprising the quest can still be done long after Vald is gone, and not canceled. - BlackOp (ps3) — Unsigned comment by 50.88.102.49 (talk) on 20 February 2013 (GMT)
Hard to tell what mended it then.
By the way: You might want to sign your contributions rather than marking them unsigned yourself. The unsigned markings are there to indicate that the contributor her- or himself forgot to sign. You would rather want to use four ~ in row. That will automatically add a signature with the correct timestamp. —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:06, 21 February 2013 (GMT)
Ya, I am still a little new to this editing thing even though I've used this site since 2005 for help. Thanks for the tip. BlackOp (talk) 00:03, 24 February 2013 (GMT)
Happy to be of help. That is what this site is all about. Helping each other, that is. You might also want to indent your contributions by adding one or more : in the start of your answers. —MortenOSlash (talk) 16:38, 24 February 2013 (GMT)

Persuade[edit]

Someone should add a section to the article about what happens when you successfully persuade Vald. You tell him that Mercer needs him in Markarth, and when Vald asks you who's going to watch the house, you offer to do it for him. He'll say that's so nice of you and give you the key. Then he'll walk away and disappear.

Later, he'll reappear in Riften, and a mob of angry townspeople will tear him to pieces. — Unsigned comment by 75.155.148.199 (talk) at 09:53 on 13 November 2016 (UTC)

This seems like something out of a mod you have installed. —MortenOSlash (talk) 10:30, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
To be precise, the mob killing him, seems like something out of a mod. To persuade him is an alternative already documented on UESP. —MortenOSlash (talk) 10:35, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Well, it's not. Legendary edition, nothing added but Dawnguard and Hearthfire. — Unsigned comment by 75.155.148.199 (talk) at 04:06 on 18 November 2016 (UTC)
I believe someone with a better understanding of the construction kit than me should look into it. I guess this has something to do with faction settings, or something similar. If it was scripted, I think someone would have found it by now.
By the way, you might want to use the signature function on the talk pages to make it easier for readers to follow the discussion. It is either done by typing ~~~~ at the end of your contribution or by clicking the signature button over the edit box when the marker is at the end of your contribution. It saves other contributors the extra work of having to add an unsigned template to your text. —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:52, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
