Exit the Cave Fix[edit]

"After obtaining the Draw Blade, you may not be able to harvest the bark from the Canticle Trees. To fix this, simply exit the cave and re-enter." I am having this exact glitch but it is impossible to exit the cave because the gate comes down blocking the way back to the entrance immediately after you pick up the draw blade. Is there another way past this that anyone knows of? 86.11.122.72 13:22, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

use the "platter" misc item to go threw the gate. Then re-enter the cave. Only thing I can think of as this dint happen to me. For more info on the platter glitch google "platter skyrim glitch" youtube should have something. — Unsigned comment by 68.238.152.79 (talk) at 16:35 on 1 July 2012

Elder Scroll (Blood) won't open[edit]

(On PC) After collecting the 7 moth swarms and going to the column of light, trying to "read" the Elder Scroll (Blood) seemed to open an invisible book. The UI had the "Turn Pages" icons but otherwise it looked like the game froze. I could still press "Tab" to get back to the inventory screen though. I tried disabling all mods but the problem still happened. I got around it by using "setstage DLC1VQ06 61", which immediately started the "reading" animation that I'm guessing was supposed to play when I opened the scroll. I'm not sure why it happened or if it's unique to me, but that's a possible fix in case anyone else has it. It also explains what the stages 61, 62, etc. are for. — Unsigned comment by 98.180.9.133 (talk) at 02:17 on 5 August 2012

Bug regarding harvesting the tree bark[edit]

Simply put, I grabbed the draw knife and activated the tree only to go into 3rd person view and watch myself do nothing for about 4 seconds. Looked up this page and tried reloading and deactivating my mods as it suggested and nothing worked. Spent 15 minutes on google only to find the solution mentioned once. That being that its waiting for you to preform a resorse gathering animation such as chopping wood, after using tcl consol command to escape the cave I tried this and it worked. immidately after I finished my wood chopin I recived the bark and a quest update. — Unsigned comment by 99.235.239.235 (talk) at 04:30 on 14 August 2012

I can confirm that this solution worked for me. 50.54.236.105 05:05, 10 August 2013 (GMT)
What about for 360 though? it has the pop up telling me to harvest bark. I push "a" and nothing happens. Help please! — Unsigned comment by 83.224.73.35 (talk) at 16:18 on 24 August 2013

Can't read Blood scroll on xbox 360[edit]

As well as on pc the blood scroll doesn't open on the xbox 360 for some players, would be nice to have the bug mentioned in the article and for any possible fixes to be listed. — Unsigned comment by 195.194.63.203 (talk) at 10:43 on 10 October 2012‎

Does anyone know if Bethesda is even working on a patch right now? — Unsigned comment by 24.18.32.124 (talk) at 01:10 on 16 December 2012‎
A possible workaround on xbox: After several playthroughs of the Dawnguard questline without encountering this bug, I finally ran foul of it with my latest character. I keep multiple saves obsessively so noticed that I could read the blood scroll up until I received the Unseen Visions quest. At that point I dismissed Serana and went off to do some other things, then hit the scroll reading bug when I finally arrived at ancestor glade, even though Serana was back with me by this point. Parting ways with Serana after talking to Dexion was the only significant thing I'd done differently on this playthrough. Luckily I had a save from before I dismissed Serana immediately after Dexion gave me the Sun scroll. Loaded it, went straight to ancestor glade and it worked fine. To be sure of the cause, I reloaded again (after receiving the sun scroll from Dexion), dismissed Serana, immediately told her to 'Come with me', went to ancestor glade and couldn't read the blood scroll. So in conclusion, don't dismiss Serana after Unseen Visions has started until you've read the blood scroll. - Fiona. — Unsigned comment by 81.129.62.126 (talk) at 15:42 on 11 September 2013 (GMT)

Finding Ancestor Glade[edit]

I find this section to be a very confusing read.

Do the directions start out at Helgen? Or Falkreath? Doesn't the instructions send you first from Helgen west to Falkreath only to make you double back again?

I propose the section start out by mentioning the closest fast travel point (of all fast travel points in the base game) and taking it from there.

Then there could be a "newbie" section that leads you to this fast travel point from Helgen, if deemed necessary. (Personally, I'd prefer it if the page simply linked to the fast travel point, trusting the reader to find his or her way there from that page, before returning here to read up on the final stretch) CapnZapp (talk) 06:34, 4 December 2012 (GMT)

"CritterMoth.psc" Line 195[edit]

I believe this is a script thats looping from this quest. I cant get it to stop please someone help — Unsigned comment by 107.194.25.224 (talk) at 02:09 on 13 February 2013

This is one of the scripts that can get goofy. I've redone the Bugs section to reflect this. A game reload is the most reliable solution. Sniffles (talk) 08:27, 5 May 2013 (GMT)

Please help!!! Stupid gate.[edit]

My last save was 6 levels ago!! All the autosaves on here are inside the Ancestor Glade. My problem is that the gate won't reopen! I can't kill the rest of the Dawnguard because they're wusses and hiding behind a wall. Serana is outside but she isn't being attacked or killing them. I can't see her or hear her. I swear I've tried every glitch in the world, I really need help. — Unsigned comment by Anastasia0812 (talkcontribs) at 11:01 on 14 July 2013 (GMT)

OMG OMG OMG! I was watching the time. I sat there for 2 hours. I got the gate open!! I was really upset. I took out my bow and bashed the gate. But it didn't work. But Serana did come. She came and we talked and when we finished talking the gate opened. Just create some kind of distraction to get Serana to come! Thank God I didn't have to lose 6 levels of work. — Unsigned comment by Anastasia0812 (talkcontribs) at 11:55 on 14 July 2013 (GMT)
The gate will not open and serena is on the other side. You have to go back to you previous saving outside the cave. You have to force serena to walk with you. Stand behind her and keep walking behind her. She will try to move sideways. It takes time. But it works. It is tricky walking this way over the fallen tree. Keep standing behind her until after the gate. It works! — Unsigned comment by 82.132.226.153 (talk) at 07:21 on 17 July 2013

Can confirm the above method of forcing her to walk your way slowly but surely worked! Took maybe 10 minutes. Force her to a little beyond the gate and your good. I thought I was going to be screwed out of finishing this questline. Thank you!

Portcullis Strategy[edit]

Serana will ask about your health immediately after reading the elder scrolls at the bottom of the cave while you are in the beam of light near the Canticle tree. When you answer a wooden portcullis will open where the cave opens up into the glade and several vampires and their minions will enter the glade and attack you.

By not answering Serana and walking up the steps I was able to attack the group of vampires with my bow through the portcullis and kill all but one laggard. Then speak to Serana, which causes the portcullis to open and the last vampire walked right into my bows line of sight, for an easy kill.

Often in Skyrim an attack is cued by some character action. For example open a chest, or cross some line and a gargoyle for instance come to life and attacks. This is the first time I was able to delay an attack by delaying an action to gain a superior tactical advantage. I wonder where else in Skyrim one might apply this strategy? — Unsigned comment by 76.125.186.220 (talk) at 18:47 on 30 July 2013 (GMT)

Extraneous Data in Walkthrough[edit]

Would there be any objection to removing the part about Peak's Shade Tower and correcting the Pinewatch information? Neither location is involved in this quest nor do either of them have anything to do with the Dawnguard add-on.Dunerat (talk) 05:29, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

The locations aren't involved in the quest proper, but they serve as good landmarks for helping players navigate to the quest objective, which is how they're written in the paragraph. I think they should stay, since it would be harder to provide directions without mentioning them. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 12:16, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
i disagree. The directions would be much better if they actually included functional directions (since you cannot actually leave Helgen on the western side) and actually sent players to the objective, instead of directing players off to a useless encounter that isn't even part of the quest. The tower isn't a useful landmark because it's both rather distant from the road, isn't on the way to the objective, and you simply return to the road once you get to it. It has no place in this walkthrough. Additionally, Pinewatch never has anyone outside of it, even while doing the single quest that involves it. My proposed version would read as follows:
The first objective in this quest is to find a Moth Priest's draw knife. As you can see on your map, the place to do this is the Ancestor Glade. The closest place to fast travel to for inexperienced travelers will be Helgen, Riverwood, or Falkreath. From Helgen, you will have to walk around to the western side of the town and then follow the road to the first left, a dirt trail opposite a downed tree and marked by two stone piles, after Pinewatch but before the unmarked bandit outpost consisting of two wooden platforms connected by a bridge over the road. From Riverwood, head southwest along the river until you reach the second left past the Guardian Stones, a dirt trail that leads to a table and circle of stones below the Lakeview Manor building site. Keep moving south-southwest through the saddle and you will come out on the Helgen-Falkreath road at or near Pinewatch. The travel southwest until you reach that same first left past Pinewatch but before the unmarked bandit outpost. From Falkreath, move through the town and exit the northeast gate, take a left at the intersection and then the first right at that same dirt trail, after the unmarked bandit outpost but before Pinewatch. Dunerat (talk) 22:28, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Your description works as well, and it's true that the sentence diverting to Peak's Shade isn't strictly necessary, though it's still worth noting as a landmark, since the path from Falkreath to Ancestor Glade passes it. I don't really see any huge problems with the rest of the directions that a few minor tweaks can't fix, but I do think it makes more sense to give directions that start from Falkreath rather than Helgen. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 12:36, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
I cleaned up some of the less-relevant aspects of the walkthrough and changed the starting point to be from Falkreath, since it's more direct that way. I left the description of what each road in the intersection leads to so that people know they're on the right track when they see those locations (which is what we do with most of the directions we give in articles), but removed the section directing people to actually go to them, since that's outside the scope of the article. Let me know if you have any other concerns or suggestions. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 12:59, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
No more concerns, that looks considerably better. Thanks for the help. Dunerat (talk) 19:18, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Getting Past Glich xbox 360 Blood Scroll[edit]

This is for the gate glitch.

Wait for a few hours keep waiting until serana comes running up. Talk to her through the gate. She will ask if you know where to find the bow now etc., after she finishs talking the gate will then rise up and let you through. - Xbox360 — Unsigned comment by 70.199.231.36 (talk) at 12:38 on 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Gate Glitch: Do this to get around the locked gate[edit]

1) Make sure that before you enter the cave, that Serena is in follow-mode i.e. as in following you
2) Walk all the way into the dungeon with Serena until you are standing in the circle where the light shines down near the tree.
3) Turn to face Serena. Make sure that Serena is near you when you are standing in the middle of the circle where the light shines from above. Talk to Serena and tell her to wait here.
4) Get the Draw Knife
5) Carve the tree
6) Get all 7 moths to follow you.
7) Return to the circle with the light shining and the 7 moths. Stand within distance to Serena so that you can click on her to talk to her.
8) Read the Elder Scroll (Blood)
9) After the Elder Scroll reading has completed, turn to Serena quickly and click to talk to her.
10) Once you talk to her, the gate will open and all the enemies will come down and attack.
11) Kill all the enemies
12) Talk to Serena
13) Walk out the entrance you came in, the gate should be open.

I am a little bit confused. It is a bit since I did the quest last, but is not this how it is supposed to work in ordinary gameplay anyway? The gate opens when the fight is over. —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:20, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
I just played the quest a few days ago and I ran into this glitch. There have been numerous suggestions on how to get around the closed gate. For me, the gate was closed but Serena was with me. However, I was unable to talk to her as she was already in attack mode. The vampires however were behind the closed gate and I could not kill them all. I was stuck. Luckily I saved my game just outside the cave where I was able to resume again and try again. I tried like 10x to no avail until I came up with this which worked for me. Some stated to wait for 2hrs, forget that. This solution was the best and most effective around the bug —MDKagent007 (talk) 11:11, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank goodness for the wall-glitch suggestion! When I entered the cave, Serana refused to move from just inside the entrance, even while saying "I'm right behind you". I didn't know it was crucial for her to follow, so I just left her there. Well, of course the gate that I didn't remember/know about came down and not only trapped me inside but Serana and the invading vampires outside! She was too deep within the tunnel fighting the vampires for me to even see much less target her for dialog. I came here immediately when I couldn't find a pull chain and it became apparent from the quest progression that something had gone wrong. I saw the mention of the wall glitch, and with some struggle was able to phase into the rock and eventually into the tunnel, help Serana dispatch the invaders, and finally speak with her to complete the quest. Second follower loophole[edit]

I've played through this where I've been able to have my second follower wait outside and recovered them after the end of this quest. I'm using the same followers (Jzargo and Seranna) and I cant figure out why it isnt working this time. Has anyone else done this before? I know you can get them to come back again during the end of Touching the Sky, but the last time I played this I was able to get both followers to accompany me through that quest as well. Any feedback would be great.

Found a workaround for the bug where scroll is readable but doesn't trigger vision[edit]

Go the moths. Stood in the column of light. Read the scroll. Got the normal 'looked at an elder scroll visuals.' For PC players who can't get the vision to trigger, like myself, there is a key. Open console. Type 'setstage dlc1vq06 62', and hte vision progresses as normal and Serana will have the conversation about the way you look.
