Thieves[edit]

For some reason, thieves no longer have the option to walk away from me as a guild member, forcing me to kill them and pay off the guild later. — Unsigned comment by 184.155.22.186 (talk) at 02:25 on July 9, 2012

Have you always had the option for them to do that? I've always had to kill them but never had to pay off the Guild for it. --SPMcKinney 04:04, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Human Thieves[edit]

In Riften, I've always encountered thieves I believe to be Bretons, but according to this page, they are only Khajiit, Dunmer, or Argonian. Are the thieves that show up in Riften under a different page, or is this one kinda incomplete? Lord Irvine 14:10, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

The Thieves that this article refers to are the ones that you encounter randomly in the wilderness. I don't know if the Thieves that are encountered in Riften have ever been documented. --XyzzyTalk 14:23, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Thieves in Riften[edit]

I have seen a thief in Riften before. He as killed by the guards. He was carrying a jewl(maybe, and a silver candlestick, and maybe somwthing else.\('~')/.Sorry for being vauge this happened months ago.--Skyrimplayer 15:31, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Those thieves found in hold capitals or towns usually can be seen picking locks and breaking into homes. However, they are always hostile and will not have any dialogue options for you. This article however, is referring to thieves randomly encountered in the wilderness, where they will approach you and demand valuables from you. You are then presented with dialogue options to persuade, intimidate, say that you're Guild Master etc.
So... I'm not sure if this article should include those hostile thieves encountered in hold capitals or towns. Or maybe create a new article for them? In the above post, Xyzzy mentioned that they're not documented anywhere on the site. Hmmm.. Let the patrollers handle this :P ~ Psylocke 15:46, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
It looks like somebody needs to either create a new page for the Riften thieves, or add them to a new section on this one. --XyzzyTalk 20:02, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Why do I get the feeling that I want to do this?I'll try doing this, but I'll probobaly need some help.As it's my first time creating a new article.--Skyrimplayer 14:30, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
IMO, the easiest way to do this, since this is your first time, would be to add it to this page as a new section. That way, you could simply copy & paste the template from the existing section, then edit it to match the Riften thieves. If it were to be decided to move it to its own page later, that could be easily done. --XyzzyTalk 17:16, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Sure thing.^_^--Skyrimplayer 18:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
My sister swore that those thieves in Riften, although they all look like Robin Hoods, are the members of thieves guild. She said that out of curiosity started helping the thief, killed all the guards and followed him around, and she said he came to city cemetary where the thief NPC turned into one of the guild members. I can not confirm it myself, though, as I tried the same thing and only followed the bastard through all the city, destroying everyone in houses he visited for the whole day :\ These thieves are never tryly hostile to my characters, they only ask 'Need something?' and run away if some of their parts were on fire.

Your cut?[edit]

I was wearing Guild Masters armour, but thieves are still trying to rob the character. Does the option of a lil' bit of respect to the Guild Master require to wear the full-set of armour? As I never use the hoods. It's friggin confusing to see how your set of long horns disappear under the cloth :| needs a mod — Unsigned comment by 46.202.43.92 (talk) at 22:16 on 2 September 2012

It only works with Nightingale armor or if you're wearing regular or improved TG armor, boots, helm, or gauntlets. I'll fix it on the page. Vely►t►e 22:25, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

lockpicks[edit]

I added that you can get lockpicks. for reference this happened while wearing full normal TG armor and I got 4 of them. he said something like : "here, take these, they may come in handy" 84.101.149.153 12:07, 15 September 2012 (GMT)

NG or TG armour doesn't work[edit]

I tried running around in a full set of TG master armour and full set of NG armour, but all the thieves I've met are hostile and demand money, instead of giving the character his cut or at least few lockpics. This might be the patch bug, as before installation of 1.7 patch (with no patches at all) it worked.

Okay so I' did a bit of testing and my results are the same. When wearing Thieves Guild Armor or Linwe's Armor, there's just an option to say that you're a fellow guild member, nothing about lockpicks or a cut. When wearing Guild Master or Nightingale Armor, there is no new dialogue at all. Note however that once you told a thief that you're a member of the guild, the next ones will all have the new dialogue no matter what you're wearing. This is/was probably true with the lockpicks and cut dialogue but I can't test that, obviously. Elakyn (talk) 15:13, 19 March 2013 (GMT)

"WE"[edit]

What does the acronym mean? It might be better to rename the page to something clearer. —Legoless (talk) 15:26, 17 November 2012 (GMT)

Silencer and I decided to go for the "WE" (world encounter) name, simply because we couldn't think of anything else. Hopefully, the disambig explains it a bit better. --Krusty (talk) 15:39, 17 November 2012 (GMT)
Wouldn't "World Encounter" or "Random" be a better option? I took a look at the disambig, but I thought it meant "wilderness". It just seems counter-intuitive, IMO. —Legoless (talk) 15:43, 17 November 2012 (GMT)
That would be my fault. I misremembered the previous like named NPCs, such as Skyrim:Mercenary (Wilderness). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 15:52, 17 November 2012 (GMT)
(edit conflict) You're right, it was too confusing - I changed it to (Wilderness) for consistency with pages like this. --Krusty (talk) 15:54, 17 November 2012 (GMT)

Wandering Thief Behavior[edit]

I encountered a wilderness thief near Fort Amol and he just ignored me. I followed him and he headed to Brandy-Mug Farm where he began harvesting wheat and using the grindstone. He occasionally stops working to eat and drink. I zoned into Windhelm and when I came back to the farm the Thief was gone.

I believe he did not try to rob me because I encountered him previously. While I was deciding how to respond a bear attacked, Shadowmere started to chase the bear, and then the thief cancelled the dialogue and ran after Shadowmere. I mounted Shadowmere to prevent the thief from dying and just ran off. — Unsigned comment by LockeJV (talkcontribs) at 02:48 on 29 December 2012‎

Same here. I encountered a thief south of Broken Fang Cave and after I paid I decided to follow him. He went all the way to Batle-Born Farm (completely ignoring the Pelagia and Chillfurrow farm, or even the much closer Rorikstead), cautiously following the road, and started working a patch of leeks, cutting wood and going to the tanning rack, changing activity every minute, sometimes pausing or eating. Also, they do not seem to run at each encounter; most of the time they just sheate their weapon and stand there, but some of them start running, apparently to a random farm. Elakyn (talk) 15:07, 19 March 2013 (GMT)
This may explain what just happened to me. I was at Heartwood Mill, turned around, and there was a Thief using the grinding wheel. Once he stood up, I attempted dialogue, and he would only give generic comments like "What do you want?". There is a spawn point right there by the mill, and he may have been 'distracted' by a different hostile spawn. Csjimmy (talk) 07:36, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
This old topic seems to re-emerge several times without ending in any conclusion. I just played an old save and persuaded the thief to leave me alone, and followed her as she ran away from my encounter point on the road North of Darklight Tower. She ended up in Heartwood Mill, where she stopped running and started doing activities at the settlement, like operating the grindstone and taking out a basket of flowers, moving her had from the basket like spreading flowers around.
As this seems to be observed by a lot of players it might be some kind of default behaviour package kicking in, that might possibly interest some of the players enough to be documented?—MortenOSlash (talk) 21:54, 29 November 2019 (GMT)

Nightingale Armor and Random Thief Dialogue[edit]

Hey,

So I'm wearing or carrying Nightingale Armor but, when approached by a random Thief, there is no dialogue option concerning Nightingales. They don't recognize me as Nightingale when wearing the Nightingale armor nor is there the dialogue option:

"I'd think you'd have more respect for a Nightingale."

I get the option when carrying Thieves Guild Armor but the fact that I know I should, at least, have the Nightingale dialogue option; it bugs me that I don't.

Any thoughts?
