Can't Plant Stolen Necklace[edit]

It says I can't drop quest items when trying to plant the stolen necklace in her house. Anyone else have this issue? — Unsigned comment by 74.193.255.196 (talk) at 07:32 on 18 November 2011

Yes! Problems here. I don't know where to "plant" the item. I've tried repeatedly to put it in a chest / cabinet / game character and I get some bizarre message along the lines that the "quest item cannot be equipped in this way". — Unsigned comment by 98.222.78.231 (talk) at 18:13 on 19 November 2011
Try dropping it instead of equiping (R instead of E), most likely in a container. — Unsigned comment by 83.85.202.104 (talk) at 13:12 on 22 November 2011
Solution: Go upstairs in the house and plant it in the chest marked with the marker. It is the only place you can put it. — Unsigned comment by 24.1.241.54 (talk) at 02:36 on 4 December 2011
I cannot plant the Stolen Flawless Amethyst for this quest in Valindor's house in Riften. I also get the 'can't remove from inventory' message. There is no obvious chest and certainly no upstairs. — Unsigned comment by Gypsydavey (talkcontribs) at 14:01 on 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Similar problem: On a mission to plant Belyn Hlaalu's Amethyst in the House of Clan Cruel-Sea in Windhelm. When I look at the map, the house is marked and when I go inside a place on the map is marked that seems to indicate a chest on the 2nd floor, but when I'm in 1st or 3rd person-view, there are no markers on the house or the chest. When I place the amethyst in the chest, I get no message.Laner75 (talk) 20:53, 4 July 2013 (GMT)

Bug[edit]

Successfully planting the amethyst does not update the quest the way it should, making it impossible to complete. — Unsigned comment by 173.26.188.96 (talk) at 17:55 on 13 December 2011

Shill Quest Bug[edit]

I am doing one of the shill quests and I believe it can't be completed. Heimskr doesn't have a house in Whiterun that I can find. Possibly due to the fact that I have finished the stormcloak quest line and his house may be the one that is destroyed near the center of town. Anyone have any info on this? 98.228.16.226 08:03, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

This happened to me too, it usually happens if you decide to join any sides in the civil war missions that result in damages of Whiterun (regardless of if you side with the stormcloak or imperials); it's probably best to quit the job and get a new one, even if Vex is going to be annoyed

Possible bug[edit]

After finishing a shill job involving an argonian in Riften, Vex said I had killed one of the residents when I hadn't. It makes me think maybe they died during the quest, but it may also be a bug. — Unsigned comment by 92.26.109.230 (talk) at 13:58 on 1 January 2012

It appears Vittoria Vici's husband lived here. I had the Shill Job in my quest log when I did Bound Until Death, where the husband was killed, which subsequently means I failed the Shill Job. — Unsigned comment by 92.26.109.230 (talk) at 19:01 on 1 January 2012
It's possible to get a job that cannot be completed such as Heimskr's house after it is destroyed in the civil war quest line — Unsigned comment by 174.100.234.191 (talk) at 23:31 on 22 January 2012

Never getting the item to plant bug[edit]

Only happened once so far, but when told to plant a Stolen Flawless Garnet in Whiterun, I never got the item I was supposed to plant. I can't seem to find an item code for the stolen garnet as apposed to a regular one either. Does anyone know a workaround? — Unsigned comment by 64.131.122.89 (talk) at 17:00 on 18 April 2012

Simply go back and cancel the job. The Silencer has spokenTalk 17:45, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Assuming the task in question here was to plant it in House Gray-Mane, I just had the same one. There was no quest marker in the active UI, though the local map view did point me to a chest on the second floor, where the Stolen Silver Garnet Ring could be placed. Any other Shill Job tasks I've had so far has given a working quest marker. Might be an oversight in the code. If I get the same task again and experience the same issue a second time, I'll add a note to the Bugs section for this specific task. TTRM (talk) 13:02, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Update: Though I can't say for certain, I'm suspecting my case was related to the game bugging out a bit after the gameplay session had endured for a significant duration. Other quests wound up displaying similar issues with the quest marker. After closing the game and continuing the next day, all issues of the nature described above ceased. Planted items never leave[edit]

Is it worth noting that any items you plant will remain indefinitely, even after the quest is completed, so long as the target container doesn't reset? Schiffy (talk) 19:48, 1 October 2012 (GMT)

Weird Shill Objective[edit]

There are no Shill jobs active in the current save but got the following objective from an in-game load of a very old save:

plant the stolen <basename? in Belyn Halaalu's house in Windhelm

The quest item somehow escaped inventory? If it's of any value such messages do indicate problems with the loading.--Lmstearn (talk) 05:12, 14 February 2015 (GMT)
