Ghostly animals?[edit]

When I did this quest, I saw a ghostly dog sitting to the shrine's right, which barked a few times during my conversation with Peryite. I'm fairly certain that it was my dog Vigilant, who appeared ghostly due to the fumes. My guess is that there are no actual apparitions or manifestations of animals or people when you're on the fumes; those that players might see are just their followers or possibly Kesh. Minor Edits 22:14, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

There's definitely a ghostly dog wandering around when you are on the trip (and I don't own a dog in the game) and I'm pretty sure a ghostly bear comes along as well. Don't ask me why, though - there are Daedric Princes more associated with nature. Maybe it's just meant to be surreal or something. I'll try and take a second look tomorrow. --Krusty 22:20, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
Don't bother, that's good enough for me. Minor Edits 22:31, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I saw two ghostly skeevers there, but no dogs or bears. --Neekerisanni123 17:56, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
You drink Peryite's funky drink and start to hallucinate, is what I took from it. I can confirm the sighting of a skeever and the barking of a dog. --Hatrackhotel (talk) 02:28, 4 July 2013 (GMT)

No Reward[edit]

I didn't receive Spellbreaker as suggested by the guide. The first time I asked him I went through the dialog choices and made sure to ask about my reward. But I accidentally exited out during the speech and it became bugged-- I couldn't do anything and there were no dialog choices. The second time I didn't want to listen to him since his speech contains an excess of dramatic pauses. I simply chose to help him without choosing any other dialog selections. Although his response is the same upon quest completion, and likely scripted only one way, I got no reward after completing the dungeon.

EDIT: Looks like it was a bug, a save and load fixed it.— Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 13:37 on 3 December 2011

I also didn't get it, but I reloaded an auto save just before speaking and got it.— Unsigned comment by 80.192.230.46 (talk) at 04:45 on 10 December 2011

Did not get on 1st 2 tries, but I had been going straight to the insence. I got it when I talked to my Cat friend first. Don't know if that was random or if talking made the difference. — Unsigned comment by Lockestep (talkcontribs) at 16:40 on 18 February 2012
I have done this about ten times and I have yet to receive a reward. It's a shame as I need the artefact for the Achievement. Apart from constantly reloading is there anything that I can do? --Pin-Pin-Ire 17:19, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, after trying 3 times I realized that it did not inform me that I had recieved the item yet when I went through my iventory I had it, I wonder if it just doesnt tell you. — Unsigned comment by 69.76.235.56 (talk) at 09:20 on 1 July 2012

Flawless Ruby[edit]

Flawless ruby is easy to find. Just kill some giants. They drop it. You just need to farm a bit. Robin. — Unsigned comment by 84.26.124.65 (talk) at 22:22 on 8 December 2011

When I was in Shriekwind Bastion, the two rubies on the ground in the throne room were not flawless, but were regular. I was level 17 at the time. I question the validity of a fixed flawless ruby. — Unsigned comment by 76.179.195.253 (talk) at 15:01 on 12 December 2011
I concur with the notion that the flawless ruby autospawn is.. flawed. Wasn't there for me either. Should probably take this out unless someone can confirm the precise location. — Unsigned comment by 70.26.59.215 (talk) at 20:07 on 16 December 2011
It's behind(left side) the empty brazier in the bloody room with the throne. — Unsigned comment by 87.177.176.64 (talk) at 19:22 on 17 December 2011
It's random loot on giants. It's a static spawn in a boat east of Markarth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUR3eXgSTT0 -- Not my video, but it was there for me too — Unsigned comment by 174.106.74.87 (talk) at 22:08 on 18 December 2011
The Flawless Ruby in Shriekwind is fixed - it comes right from the game data. I also added the one in the boat to the article, so there's now two options. --Krusty 22:25, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

() I found it on Amaund Motierre (pick-pocket), a diner at the Bannered Mare (Whiterun). — Unsigned comment by 208.69.213.164 (talk) at 02:39 on 23 December 2011

Amaund Montierre is a main character during the Dark Brotherhood quest line, *SPOILER ALERT* after being asked by the emperor to kill the traitor (Amaund Montierre) you will find him in the Bannered Mare in Whiterun as stated above, he will have a diamond, an emerald, a flawless ruby, and several other gems. Otherwise get up to around level 35 and you'll start finding heaps of flawless rubies in randomly generated rewards chests. --Mattrimkevx 03:43, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
The ruby in the boat was regular for me, no flawless to be seen. There seems to be some inconstancy here. I finally found the throne room one though, it's between the platform the throne is on and the brazier. It's really hard to see due to shadows but it's there. — Unsigned comment by 96.25.95.212 (talk) at 15:40 on 11 February 2012
Hmm..this is so confusing guys. I found a bloody room , with a throne and an unlit fire to the right. However, the throne is NOT on a platform, its directly on the floor, and I cant find the ruby either. problem is the advice given here is contradictory. The pile of logs and stones to the right of the throne is NOT a brazier, its just a fire. Braziers are the two objects near the ring pull chain at the other side of the room, are we talking about these?..or the unlit fire which is by the exit to the room. One says its BEHIND the 'brazier', someone else says its between the throne and the 'brazier'. The article just vagely says 'on the floor near the unlit fire'. anyway..I searched every gaddam inch of that room and couldnt find this ruby at all. A brazier is a container for a fire, a pile of logs and stones on the floor is not a brazier. 86.178.229.183 13:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Starting the Quest[edit]

I tried talking to Kesh the Clean with a level 10 Character, but he wouldn't speak with me. I then added the "Find Kesh at the Peryte Shrine" misc quest via console player.setstage DA13Intro 0. This quest was completed when coming near the shrine and Kesh would speak to me, and I could start the quest. So it seems that waiting for the "Afflicted Refugee" to show up will be the only way to start the quest without console. Was anybody able to start the quest without having DA13Intro ?--Alfwyn 19:53, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

I started this quest without meeting the refugee. (xbox) — Unsigned comment by 80.192.230.46 (talk) at 03:28 on 10 December 2011
What refugee? --Dalsio 03:02, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Starting at level ten you can have a random encounter with an afflicted refugee, who'll point you to kesh and starts the quest. — Unsigned comment by 87.177.176.64 (talk) at 19:24 on 17 December 2011
If you only want to start the quest by meeting the refugee (if you are perfectionist like me XD) and you don't find him during random encounters, it's probably because you've already met without seeing him. To verify this, type in the console SQS WEJS14. If only Stage 0 = 1 then this is the case. In order to meet him again, type ResetQuest WEJS14 and go to a random encounter spot. — Unsigned comment by 82.242.48.47 (talk) at 12:00 on 29 April 2012
You find afflicted that start the quest in a random encounter, the encounter only occurs level 10+. If you want to start the quest by talking to kesh the clean, then you need to be level 12+. — Unsigned comment by 27.252.171.94 (talk) at 04:31 on 4 November 2012

Experimenting[edit]

Krusty asked me to do him a favor, and see what happened when I talked to Kesh at level 11 and level 12. Talking with him at 11 did not enter the dialogue menu and I could not start the quest, I had not been attacked by Afflicted. But when I leveled to 12, he became a lot more amiable and I could start the quest with no issues. So the quest can be started at 10 if you're attacked by the refugees and at 12 if you seek out the shrine yourself.--Corevette789 14:33, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes! This means that the page is finished - the Afflicted Refugees will show up as Random Encounters at lvl 10, while Kesh himself will trigger the quest at lvl 12. Pretty unusual, maybe even a bug. But we can now get this on the Main Page. Thanks! --Krusty 14:39, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Ghosting Bthardamz[edit]

It's probably not worth pointing out in the article, but given a decent sneak skill you can complete this quest without harming any Afflicted, though you can't avoid all the Dwemer things. You need a single arrow for distraction at the handle on the northern ledge, but that's the only tight spot. So you don't need to kill sick people in their sleep or in prayer, and can ponder what their affliction contributes to the grand order of the world - if your char is so inclined. 77.185.106.170 22:35, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

making the inscence[edit]

Have all of the ingredeants yet there is no dialogue option to give them to kesh even though the quest marker tells me to go directly to him --J.J.-Lopez 22:12, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Unless you get the items after the quest starts they won't count you need to drop the items and pick them up again. 2.220.81.107 14:00, 4 January 2012 (UTC)KNJB98
I inserted the following line into the detailed walkthrough. Does it appear to be clear and correct?
Note that if you already have some or all of these items in your inventory, you will have to drop them after Kesh tells you to collect them, and then pick them back up. Otherwise, the quest objective telling you to deliver the ingredients to Kesh will fail to appear. --Jreynolds2Talk 17:26, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
On PS3 I already had all 4 in my inventory and had no problem. 76.182.40.8 04:50, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok, then. I've removed the note. I guess someone will write again if it's a reproducible bug. --JRTalk E-mail 15:22, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

() If anyone can share their experiences about this issue, noting the version of your game or date (or approximate date), it will be helpful. I have not done the quest yet, so I will check it out on PC v 1.4 when I get to it. (I will do it having all the ingredients before starting the quest, and after starting it at a couple of points.) But not sure when I'll get to that. — Unsigned comment by JR (talkcontribs) at 03:19 on 19 February 2012

Accept No Substitutes[edit]

The article now claims Kesh will accept a number of substitutes for the the flawless ruby and silver ingot. All of this appears to be false, at least on xbox. 108.28.34.65 18:48, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Easy Findings[edit]

Both the vampire dust and the deathbell are spawned in your home in Riften after getting the alchemy upgrade. I don't know if any other homes provide these items, but it may be a good thing to look into. --Sahjiarah 05:15, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Non-Respawnable?[edit]

I cleared out Bthardamz, in game time, literally over a year ago. I know this because I enjoyed doing it so I saved a file specifically for the quest. The game-date between files is literally over a year old. I've never once had it respawn. The Afflicted outside do, all three of them... Inside however all of the chests are still empty that I looted, all the NPCs are still dead, and all the items I've dropped are still there. I am on the 360. The only thing I can possibly think of that bugged this is that at the end when I confronted Orchendor and killed him, it did the animation for me to decapitate him; He dropped to his knees and I severed his head with my two Steel Waraxes. Is it possible that decapitating him, or possibly turning him to ashes as well, will prevent the dungeon from respawning ever again? It should be noted that yes, on my map Bthardamz is marked "Cleared". 6:33 PM 30, Dec 2011. — Unsigned comment by 50.103.46.55 (talk) at 00:35 on 31 December 2011

Keep Flawless Ruby (and other items)[edit]

Once you have obtained all four items, talk to Kesh and select the option to "give" him the items. He will proceed to exit the conversation. Once you have access to your inventory, drop the items you want to keep. He will walk over and continue the quest without ever receiving them. When you drop them the quest will tell you to re-obtain the items although they are no longer required. You may still continue the quest without ever losing the items, although you must have them in your inventory while speaking to kesh to have the specific dialogue option available to advance the quest. — Unsigned comment by 24.4.51.222 (talk) at 00:49 on 31 December 2011

Yep, that's a cheat, and as such, not worth mentioning on the article, so I deleted it. Point is, when you do stuff like this you can bug the entire quest. Try talking to Kesh when he mixes the potion - then the quest will glitch and be gone. It's so incredibly easy to screw things up in this game that a cheat like this shouldn't even be on this talk. Find some new items instead. --Krusty 00:55, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Problem inside Bthardamz[edit]

Whenever I enter the Lower District, the cell doesn't load and I keep on falling through empty space and then warping back up to the door. Any ideas on how to fix this? — Unsigned comment by 80.7.117.41 (talk) at 08:25 on February 26, 2012

I had a similar problem in the Bthardamz Dwelling (accessed from the Upper District), where a portion of the floor did not appear, and falling through it transported me back to the doorway. Reloading fixed it. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 08:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Constant Teleporting[edit]

In the boss fight with Orchendor, I "hit" him with the Sanguine Rose (When I released the button to summon my daedra, the crossheir was on him) as he started teleporting. Immidiately after that, the visual and sound effects for teleporting and conjuring played about 10 times in 1 second. Then, for the rest of the fight he did nothing but teleport around the room extremely rapidly. I managed to kill him anyway by standing next to one of the spots he was teleporting to and spammed mele attacks. Anyone know anything about this? It could make it hard to kill him if this happens with any frequency to other people. — Unsigned comment by 174.134.92.91 (talk) at 03:01 on 25 June 2012

He teleported a lot with me as well, I wasn't using the Sanguine Rose, however. 93.182.148.173 18:25, 14 September 2012 (GMT)

Items Already in Inventory[edit]

The article says "Note that if you already have some or all of these items in your inventory, you will have to drop them after Kesh tells you to collect them, and then pick them back up. Otherwise, the quest objective telling you to deliver the ingredients to Kesh will fail to appear."

I already had all 4 items in my inventory, and the 4 corresponding objectives were immediately marked completed. I did not have to drop them from my inventory and pick them up.

I have the most up-do-date versions of the game and all the most up-to-date versions of the unofficial patches, so apparently this issue was fixed at some point... Logical Zebra (talk) 20:32, 23 January 2014 (GMT)

"Find Kesh" disappears[edit]

Has anyone else had the "Find Kesh" pre-quest disappear from their journal? It recently disappeared on me when there was almost nothing left in my journal, but completed normally once I approached Kesh. I can find absolutely no reason it should happen, so I'm wondering if it's a one-off or something related to the journal being almost empty rather than this quest specifically. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:31, 17 March 2014 (GMT)

"None of the bodies will ever disappear as the entire dungeon does not respawn"[edit]

This does not appear to be true - the dungeon may not respawn, but the bodies certainly seem to disappear, at least for me; mid-way through the quest I went back to my house in Solstheim to drop off the loot I'd accumulated on this and some previous missions, and there were no bodies when I returned (I have the USKP installed, however - I don't *think* that changes things, but it may). 58.6.188.97 07:28, 28 May 2014 (GMT)

Silver Ingot[edit]

Just an observation: there's a silver vein just a bit downhill from the Peryite shrine. You still have to smelt it, though.

Afflicted refugees everywhere![edit]

I started another playthrough recently and this time I decided to talk to the afflicted refugee once I met him. After that (nearly?) all of my random encounters were afflicted refugees, I got them at least 10 times in a row while wandering to all of the spawning points I remembered. It stopped after I visited Kesh and thus advanced the quest. Somebody out there with similar experiences?--Metaphorset (talk) 21:20, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Correction on Orchendor's abilities[edit]

He has 100% magic resistance, not 80%.

He has no elemental resistances (and doesn't need them).

His teleport is scripted, not a spell, so it happens whether he can cast spells or not.

Wraithchilde (talk) 23:41, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Opposite of a listed bug[edit]

Peryite may not give you Spellbreaker upon completing the quest. This can be fixed by loading a previous save. This may be caused by asking Kesh for permission to commune with Peryite.

I just finished Peryite's quest, without talking to Kesh when I got back, and I didn't get the Spellbreaker. After reloading, I did ask Kesh for permission, and I got it. --M2pt5 (talk) 01:48, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Disappearing Silver[edit]

I had all the ingredients in my inventory prior to starting the quest. After getting the quest update to locate the ingredients, 3 of the 4 ingredients immediately updated, all except the silver ingot. Upon checking my inventory, all my silver ingots were gone, I had 4. So I think, ok, that’s weird, oh well, I’ll just teleport to Markarth and buy another. I proceed to do just that, expecting the quest to update the moment I buy the silver, but no such luck. Check my inv again, no silver!! Okay, maybe I’m just clicking too fast, seeing things, bought silver ore instead of ingot... who knows. Take a quick jaunt to solitude for another ingot... super careful in the shop (well, the blacksmith actually), DEFS click on silver ingot, and sure enough, my gold is removed, the ingot is gone from the shop, but NOT in my inventory. My silver ingots just get gobbled up!! I’m going to hit a mine and see what happens next. Belgarim (talk) 00:15, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

okay, ran down the hill kill and grabbed an ingot off the ground by the smelter in Karthwasten, quest updated, and silver remained in inventory. Possible bug with buying silver from a merchant while this quest is active. Belgarim (talk) 00:21, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
