Killing Valmir[edit]

Does Killing Valmir before entering the barrow affect the quest in anyway? 112.201.17.247 08:42, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

I killed him and proceeded uncaringly. Heh. Nothing bad happened, but I never got the quest. At least it's not an unfinished quest; it just never happened. -Fabio. — Unsigned comment by 187.67.234.103 (talk) at 18:01 on 22 January 2013
Valmir was hostile to me as well. I reloaded a few times and it was always the same. I decided to wipe him out as a Vampire Lord for the VL XP. I had forgotten the vampire mod I use forces you to revert in daylight, so I ran back in to just put him down normally and suddenly he was no longer hostile. I reloaded and tried again without vamping out and he was hostile. Once more I transformed into a vamp lord then reverted and upon entry he was friendly. Might work for Werewolves as well, or maybe just a fluke. Greyslayer (talk) 07:26, 12 May 2013 (GMT)

Move Content from Forelhost?[edit]

There is good content for describing the quest on the Forelhost page. Move some of it over? Tageborg 10:34, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Reported bugs on the door[edit]

I am playing on PC and I picked the well lock. I had no glitches with the glass claw. I suspect that the report here of a bug relating to picking the well lock is just a coincidence. — Unsigned comment by 174.21.129.4 (talk) at 13:26 on 30 December 2011

If you haven't chose sides yet...[edit]

I haven't joined either the Imperials or the Stormcloaks, yet Captain Valmir is an Imperial demanding I help him as an Imperial myself. I'm guessing this is just some default setting for those who haven't yet chosen sides. It does make me worry about choosing the option "If it will help the cause..." hopefully this will not count as "joining" the Imperials.

I'm pretty sure the clothes he will wear when you first encounter him depend from who you've chosen to follow at Helgen 82.243.194.53 20:19, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

My observations:[edit]

I have done this map a couple of times and because it turns out that the 'captain' is actually a Thalmor agent, he disguises himself depending on who he dupes into going inside the fortress. I do agree even though I have not chosen a side, he appears to me as an imperial, as I always choose to follow Hadvar out of Helgen, however when I go out to the battlements, he is usually trying to convince a Stormcloack soldier, so he is disguised as a Stormcloack officer. Door puzzle[edit]

I followed the indicated solution (snake on bottom, owl in middle, fox on top) and the door did not open. I'm assuming:

  • that sequence is wrong
  • the correct sequence is generated randomly
  • or, I've found a bug. I've removed the sequence from the article for the time being.

Dbbolton 21:05, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Update: it turns out the symbol I thought was an owl was actually another bird. Dbbolton 21:07, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The order is correct, you can see the symbols on the bottom of the claw. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 21:10, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Glass Claw[edit]

We need a better description of how to find the claw. I can't find it, and the guide doesn't help me at all.24.220.164.223 02:48, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

It's not that hard to find, just on a pedestal right outside of the libraryBenScoHolm 02:59, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Dancing Draugr Deathlord.[edit]

I got past the door and defeated each of the deathlords at the end with Rahgot, then noticed one standing up with its hands out doing a "zombie stand" looking dance. I figured it was worth mentioning since it happened twice for me on xbox. It may have been due to the weapon i used both times. A daedric dagger fully upgraded with absorb health 10 points and paralyze 1 second. — Unsigned comment by 69.171.187.88 (talk) on 18 May 2012

Nothing directly to do with the weapon, I think -- it's just an animation glitch that occurs now and again. You can also have draugr running in place and various other amusing spectacles. Robinwitch1 (talk) 16:34, 17 November 2013 (GMT)
Perhaps you killed the draugr while he was getting up from being paralyzed? Sometimes that leads to them walking in place indefinitely despite being technically dead and looted. 98.169.58.20 06:40, 30 April 2014 (GMT)The Arcadian

Mask/Staff[edit]

Even though the quest says your going to search for the mask, and even the Captain speaks of the mask, just before entering after he unlocked the door the Captain said something about the journal helping locate the staff. Is this an error or what?--Dro'Bakha (talk) 09:04, 10 December 2012 (GMT)

I quote "Skorm Snow-Strider's journal is found along this path." It is already added to the quest walkthrough here a long time ago. —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:19, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
And that completely overlooks what I'm asking about. I know the journal is found there, that is nothing new. What I'm asking about is the captain speaking of the goal being to find the Dragon Priest's staff instead of mask. Please make sure to read my question fully before responding and getting things completely wrong.--Dro'Bakha (talk) 08:43, 12 December 2012 (GMT)
My mistake. I really do have to learn to read properly what I am answering! —MortenOSlash (talk) 18:22, 12 December 2012 (GMT)
No update on this in over a year, but Bakha is correct. The Captain's final spoken dialogue says to report back when you've found the staff, but the subtitles say to report back when you've found the mask and the quest and journal both have you looking for a mask. Soemthing else that slipped by QA apparently. 72.183.214.11 05:28, 14 February 2014 (GMT)
Looking at it in the CK (yes, it lets hear you the audio file), it seems both voice and subtitle say "staff" instead of "mask": dunForelhostSharedInfo03. Now the quest objective displayed is another thing. --Alfwyn (talk) 11:51, 14 February 2014 (GMT)

birdy[edit]

There's a bird's nest behind the captain's tent to which a bird returns every so often... u can melee her! — Unsigned comment by 85.64.16.111 (talk) at 14:45 on 7 September 2013 (GMT)

Killing Captain Valmir prematurely[edit]

It appears that killing the "captain" during any stage of the quest completes the quest as soon as you pick up Rahgot's mask. Can anyone confirm? If you're a Stormcloak supporter, this may be exploited to gain a Stormcloak Officer armor, by killing Rahgot and looting the key off him, then immediately proceeding out to the overlook and murdering Valmir. As long as there are no witnesses, your bounty ought to stay the same as well. --83.185.87.52 15:22, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Moved from Article[edit]

  • If the well door is lockpicked the puzzle door will not allow you to rotate the rings. You need to obtain the well door key from the minor dragon priest. ?
  • The mask and the key to the battlements may be missing from Rahgot's body, in which case the quest is stuck. This happened after completing the secondary objective Show Skorm Snow-Strider's journal to Valmir : although the journal entry got updated, it didn't show the other secondary objective about retrieving the key to the well in the Catacombs, nor did it update the quest's compass marker so that it was pointing to Rahgot as it should've had (nor more quest marker on the map from then on). ?

These bugs have been left unverified for a long time. --Oriwa Talk 22:17, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
