Note Scripted Death[edit]

Should probably be noted that given roggvir's scripted death its not typically possible to get the quest from him. Maybe if you kill the executioner, captain, and guard (which I have done but then roggvir gave me no dialogue except standard npc mumbling), pay off your bounty and come back to the city with him somehow still alive. 87.194.26.132 12:56, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

What if you progress all the way through the civil war questline before entering Solitude for the first time? I read on another page that the stormcloak guards in solitude have differing dialogue based on whether Roggvir was executed or not. If Roggvir is spared in this manner, does this mission become available? — Unsigned comment by 75.34.55.137 (talk) at 05:49 on 29 January 2012
If you go through the entire Civil War without entering Solitude until the assault, you'll get dialogue stating that they couldn't get there in time to save Roggvir, implying that he was executed before the attack. — Unsigned comment by 184.99.105.211 (talk) at 07:27 on 7 January 2013

So let me get this straight...[edit]

This quest is given by:

  • A dead man
  • A random city guard.
  • A bumbling mage.
  • A quest prop.

Does that sound about right? --DaedalusMachina 04:37, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Well for some reason this quest was given to me by Lisette (bard at The Winking Skeever in Solitude) and she sent me to rough up Illdi. So, thats weird. And its broken too, because when I came back to Lisette, she gave me money, but the quest was never completed and it never disappeared from my journal. 90.177.86.190 18:42, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
You left out "The kid that lives in a dead man's mind," unless that's who you meant by quest prop. 98.165.130.46 21:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I just tried to get this quest to start from Tolfdir, Illdi, and Skulvar. None of them offered to let me start, and the remaining quest givers in the list are quite odd, so I suspect that this quest is not actually implemented into the game. Has anyone been able to do this quest? Arcanist 19:29, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
My assassin character got a letter about this quest. I got attacked by those thugs that come after you for stealing, then a bit later got a letter from someone saying that they were impressed by how I handed "Hired Thug" (Must be a dynamic name) and they want my help. It was from Skulvar Sable-hilt. I went to talk to him and... nothing. He had his usual default dialog. Eventually I tried dropping the letter and picking it up again to see if that worked. It did and I got... debug text. Yes, I got a pop up message with some debug text saying that once books are fully implemented that the quest start script should go here. But, the quest did start, under the miscellaneous quests. I went and talked to Skulvar again and he wanted me to assault someone, it was the guy who wanders around the stables, I forget his name, without killing him. I tried the quest and accidentally kill him, but it still said it was successful. I reloaded back to before getting the quest to avoid possible glitches. So, it seems to me that this quest is unfinished for some reason. 129.246.225.91 15:04, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
This quest is still bugged on patch 1.6.89.0.6. I tried to complete this by several ways, but it never disappears from journal without using console commands. One weird thing is that quest NPC tracking is active even quest itself is not: After meeting with the courier it's possible to trigger quest stages without reading the letter. This means you won't officially even start the quest and there is no quest marker to target. Just go to target NPC and hit him/her with spell like healing hands, you'll go straight to quest stage 30. Go to person who send you the letter and you get reward of 50 gold. This won't clear the quest from journal and you have to use CompleteAllObjectives WIAssault02. 84.251.33.3 23:35, 14 June 2012 (UTC)JT

Omulag also can give this quest[edit]

See my comment on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Omluag#Leter_from_Omluag about what seems to trigger it. I finally got to the bottom of it :) LukeH 15:33, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, it looks like quite a lot of people can potentially give you that quest. --Alfwyn 16:46, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, and it is not necessary that the giver be an eye-witness. Jorn, in the Bards College, gives this quest after a thrashing of the essential NPC, Sabine Nytte, in the Red Wave's hold (done solely for advancing the one-handed skill and not tied to a quest.) I suppose she relates the story in the Winking Skeever and the rumor spreads. Kalevala (talk) 18:43, 24 May 2013 (GMT)

Unfinished and Bug Confirmed[edit]

I have recieved the letter and I had to drop it and read it on the ground to recieve the quest. Upon reading it on the ground a box pops up with the message "WIAssault02:When books are implemented, quest objective should come after reading this letter" Then in misc. quest: "Meet with Kodrir about a job involving violence." Then you speak to him and then you are asked to hurt Leifur. Wether you kill him or punch him you can still get the return to Kodrir message, however once you recieve the 50 gold the quest will not be removed from the log. I believe this is something that the team missed that they never finished, quite obvious with the WIAssualt02 message box that would be directed toward someone that was working on the quest and not for a player to see. Someone needs to fix this crap or remove the quest all together one or the other, cause it's just about broken. — Unsigned comment by 207.255.126.27 (talk) at 05:13 on 7 June 2012

any way to remove this quest when stuck in the journal? I still have it say to talk to omluag about a job involving violence. 173.51.247.17 06:00, 20 March 2014 (GMT)

Additional Bug[edit]

Refusing to assault someone for the questgiver also ends up awarding you the 50 gold anyway, and still doesn't remove the quest from your journal.96.41.18.214 22:27, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

I can verify that when the quest does not erase from the journal, the solution offered in the Bugs section works. Kalevala (talk) 02:59, 17 June 2013 (GMT)

Target is kid[edit]

After I'd killed some random "Hired Thugs", Lemkil in Rorikstead sent me the letter. Once I got there, he wanted me to beat up his daughter, Britte. Similar to the fishing job's from Delvin, these quest seem to be able to target any humanoid npc, including kids.83.180.226.248 00:57, 21 July 2013 (GMT)

Assault or kill?[edit]

The trigger for me was just bumping someone with my shield, and I got n assault charge for that.... Arnout aka The Emperors Angel (talk) 12:36, 19 February 2015 (GMT)

Journal bug is still present, using USKP 2.1.3b[edit]

Also, the workaround with CompleteAllObjectives mentioned on the UESP page did not work. — Unsigned comment by 31.164.106.131 (talk) at 00:26 on 15 December 2015 (UTC)
