Contradiction[edit]

This page lists a prerequisite of 100 in Restoration, and also 90 Restoration (in the text). Which is it? --65.175.218.213 18:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

I got the quest at Restoration 93. — Unsigned comment by 70.29.247.129 (talk) at 04:18 on 20 December 2011
It's since been fixed (I have no idea how long ago), but for reference, all the Ritual quests start to trigger at Skill Level 90 in the respective tree. 98.198.118.224 07:39, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Tips:[edit]

I got toasted the first time around, second attempt the first ghost wasn't looking at me and didn't immediately attack so I just crouched and stayed hidden without moving till the Augur was satisfied. — Unsigned comment by 174.62.244.188 (talk) at 16:56 on 14 December 2011

One easy way is to bring along buffed up follower and most of the ghosts will focus on him/her. — Unsigned comment by ZekunD (talkcontribs) at 00:01 on 29 December 2011

Bug[edit]

Sometimes Colette doesn't sell Guardian Circle spell after finishing the quest. I tried resetting the inventory by quitting the game and restarting, but didn't work. So I had to load earlier save and redo the quest. This time, Colette had 9 Guardian Circle books right after quest completion.

At the end of quest, I tried to talk to Augur after he said that I am worthy. It caused him to repeat the sentence a few times. I am not sure if it caused 9 spell books to appear on Colette. Also not sure if 9 books for immediate sale is normal. (ZekunD 08:12, 28 December 2011 (UTC))

Something is very bugged about this part. I was able to buy a different Master spell (Mass Paralysis) from the college's Alteration mage after completing this quest, despite my Alteration skill being only in the 50s, but Colette had nothing new for me. 108.161.119.46 02:40, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Colette's store info has MGRestorationRitualBooks containing the Blades sword Akaviri Katana, which does nothing as far as I can tell. I checked Tolfdir, and his MGRitualAlterationBooks has Mass Paralysis, Phinis has Frost, Storm, and Dead Thrall, etc. The script at the end of the quest looks like it is supposed to add Guardian Cicle to Colette's Merchant chest, but it obviously doesn't always work. -Vardis 09:37, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Each ritual quest sets a global at the end which enables whatever books for that quest to appear when the chest respawns. Another copy is also added by the script to the chest so you don't have to wait for the merchant to respawn. However the restoration quest mistakenly sets the global for the alteration quest, so you can buy mass paralysis after that chest respawns. However it also adds the book to the right chest so that should work. If you wait too long to buy it though I suspect it would disappear and Guardian Circle would lost to you forever. --Bluedanieru 13:21, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
I think I found the fix for PC! You need to open console, click on Colette and write "additem 000fde7b 1" (without quotation marks ofc). This added one tome of Gurdian Circle to Colette's inventory and she sold me the tome. If this worked for someone else i might add this to articles John3 (talk) 20:15, 16 April 2013 (GMT)
You could just give the item to yourself if you want it. Jeancey (talk) 20:20, 16 April 2013 (GMT)
Yes but this gives you the option to buy it which makes you spend gold and gain small ammount of Speech experience. It's a bit more legit way than just giving it to yourself via console. John3 (talk) 20:27, 16 April 2013 (GMT)

See Guardian Circle for fix[edit]

Tried what is listed. Did not work. Spell is still not available for sale. Probably should be removed from the article. — Unsigned comment by 98.176.242.147 (talk) at 17:58 on 11 January 2012

Confirmed. I keep trying this (I didn't think I'd need a pre-quest save!), and it continues to fail. Dialogue repeated on its own the first time, but I can't get it to skip.--Playerseekingbugs 21:00, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
I cast Bane of the Undead immediately after getting it, then when I went to chat with Collete she had it! This might be a more reliable fix, but others will have to test it.--Playerseekingbugs 21:15, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed PS3 fix- I used bane of the undead immediately after surviving the ghosts and guardian circle appeared in collette's inventory (after 3 failed attempts and my most recent save was after getting the quest). No inventory reset was required. 70.53.32.17 21:18, 2 June 2013 (GMT)

Could use more exact completion requirements[edit]

I found this "quest" really weird & confusing to do. You should be given a clearer idea of what the goal is, and what is or isn't possible. Initially I assumed I was dealing with undead ghosts, and should be using Circle of Protection and/or Turn Undead spells. But these don't seem to accomplish much/anything. I "completed" the challenge on the second attempt using some sort of chaotic combination of heals & wards, but had no idea whatsoever why - it's not clear you need to survive for a specific duration! So I went through it about a dozen times trying to understand how it actually works. From what I could tell, it's not an exact time period, it seems like it might last until you've taken a certain amount of damage. On my last try I simply ran around in circles, able to dodge most of the projectile attacks, and healing efficiently as required. I was taking hardly any damage, but it took quite a few minutes to pass the test. The first two times I did it was much quicker but I was taking much more damage. One time I completed it without taking any damage, simply by standing behind the 3 ghosts, which is basically a bug. They all materialize facing away from me, and don't start attacking if you just hang back & wait (I do have 100 Stealth). So that suggests time alone is enough. Strange... 69.165.159.42 06:58, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Some more tips[edit]

  • You don't need to turn or kill anything, just stay alive.
  • Use your most efficient healing / ward spells, not necessarily the strongest one!
  • By running around in circles around the well, and sprinting periodically around traffic, you can avoid most of the magic attacks, taking very little damage.
  • You can use shouts, the "Ethereal Form" can keep you alive while you are low on health / magicka.
  • If you have already have some perks in Restoration, and are finding this difficult, getting the Avoid Death perk helps keep you alive much longer, although at least one time it failed to trigger.

Do not bring a follower[edit]

I had a follower with me while doing this quest. I don't know if it was just because I had one, but the ghosts didn't despawn (and can't die), and my follower keeps engaging in combat with them. Before talking with the Augur, I told him to wait just outside the door. I can now not talk to him, and he is stuck fighting the immortal ghosts. Since I can't talk to him, he won't leave the cave. He'll just go into the hurt stance, then after a bit regenerate enough health, and fight with the ghosts again. Has anyone else experienced this? — Unsigned comment by Anomaly (talkcontribs) at 07:34 on 22 January 2012

Console?[edit]

I wonder if you can solve the sale of the "Guardian Circle" by console. Besides not being able to buy, "Augur of Dunlain" does not disappear, do not know if this is normal, and that also can not get back the save. He wanted to know any code to return everything to normal. — Unsigned comment by John LR (talkcontribs) on 20 April 2012

Yes, you can. Now documented on Skyrim:Restoration. Robin Hoodtalk 06:31, 4 November 2012 (GMT)

Another glitch?[edit]

After surviving the ghosts, only one disappeared, and the Augur didn't disappear. I didn't think much of it, and I left, assuming that Bethesda would have fixed this quest since I last completed it on my other character. Upon revisiting the Augur, the ghosts resume their attack.

Needless to say, Colette doesn't/didn't have the tome available for sale.

Etc., etc. Bethesda don't care. — Unsigned comment by 58.169.167.57 (talk) at 12:16 on 23 August 2012

Have you used Bane of the Undead, especially while near the Augur of perhaps Colette? That's what actually seemed to fix it for me after I tried the suggested fix several times. And I kind of feel like Bethesda might be better off with trying to fix things if they established communications with pages devoted to their game, or at least examined them. Many of the more irritating bugs that people might whine about on their forums are much better described here by those who have been willing to take the time to analyze problems and try to see where they pop-up and test possible fixes. I don't find too much of that devotion to detail on the forum pages I've seen so far on their site.--Playerseekingbugs 07:28, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

No, Bethesda doesn't care about fixing bugs. They will sell the exact same game with a new coat of graphics paint on it again and again and again without ever fixing any of the bugs in it because fixing bugs means absolutely nothing to them. Why don't they care? Because people are stupid enough to keep buying their products. Until people turn off the tap, BETHESDA WILL NEVER GET BETTER.

"Step into the Light" Freeze[edit]

I am having a major issue with this quest as the game freezes without fail whenever I step into the light that the Augur makes appear. I am playing on PC, fully patched through Steam (though without DLC). As I have been looking around for fixes it looks like this happens to plenty of people on XBOX360 and PS3 as well. I am surprised this article does not take note of the freeze as common as it must be. Even The Elder Scrolls Wiki notes it (though without any kind of fix), which I find to be in general inferor to UESP. Anyways, I'm lucky I'm on PC, because I'll just use console commands to get around it. I cannot for the life of me find a fix for the issue. 199.96.204.5 21:09, 21 October 2012 (GMT)

Alright, I tried a few things before I tried the obvious. First I turned off all of my mods. No difference. It still froze. Then I turned my graphics all the way down. Still froze. Then I tried to enter the light in third person. Still froze. So then I tried the obvious: drop everything. This worked immediately. It was a pain to pick everything up, but the funny thing is I was able to pick everything up during the test. That said, I have read others have tried this, and it has not worked. So the fix may not be universal, but it should work for some. 99.35.94.189 21:38, 21 October 2012 (GMT)
I had not had this problem in the past but on my current play-through I was in the high level 90's before I started. I dumped everything into the starting room closet (since its safe even after you get the chief-mage-boss-person room) but had tons of self filled soul-gems and a few quest items. I didn't want to finish the quests yet so I hoped the soul-gems would be enough. I was able to "legendary" enchanting twice with the number I had accumulated without realizing it. That took care of it. Arrows were fine (and I have large counts of Iron & Steel arrows) so I assume its caused by the same problem that won't let self-filled soul-gems stack properly etc (See the soul-gem talk page for glitches.) Hope that helps someone. (Philbert) 65.25.169.116 22:43, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Confirmed, here, it's not stacks of items (like arrows), but individual entries. I don't know the upper limit, but I suspect it's likely 255 items. I found it's pretty easy just to dump everything (since the quest strips you naked anyway) and then pick it up again afterwards. 174.28.241.102 20:09, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

Pausing during the test[edit]

On the PS3, when doing the test for the Augur of Dunlain, around 5 seconds after the ghosts spawned, I paused the game to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, as soon as I unpaused the game, the ghosts despawned and he said I passed the test. This was my 3rd time doing this quest, and on the other 2 times I did it he'd repeat the "You're worthy" line at least 3 times, but with this he only said it once (though the quest completed message appeared twice). Tried reproducing it, and it worked the same way again, but this time the quest completed message only appeared once. --189.119.25.37 07:15, 3 December 2012 (GMT)

Unkillable Ghosts[edit]

So I proved myself worthy by surviving, but even though the quest is over, there are still a couple unkillable ghosts following me around and attacking me. May have been caused by wearing the Mystic Tuning Gloves for Drevis's task; they didn't automatically de-equip like everything else. Reloaded and took them off manually before approaching the Augur; that seemed to fix it. SonGoharotto (talk) 00:12, 16 January 2013 (GMT)

Guardian Circle fix that always works[edit]

This is guarantee to work, based on what has been said on the front page bug section:

Before starting the quest, open Colette's inventory by asking her what she sells. Don't need to buy anything, just open the merchant inventory. Look inside the book section and look at the spell books for sale. Then start the quest. After finishing the quest and getting Bane of the Undead spell, don't do anything. Don't open your own inventory and put back your armor or clothes. Just go back to Colette directly. She would say you are naked when talk to her. Open her inventory and you can now buy Guardian Circle.
