Bug:[edit]

A PC bug may occur if you start this quest after you joined the Stormcloaks and finished Battle for Whiterun quest then enforced a ceasefire between the Empire and the Stormcloaks in Season Unending. When you return to Rescue from Fort Neugrad quest after finishing the main quest, Ralof and his men you supposed to meet nearby Fort Neugrad might actually be waiting you inside the Fort Neugrad. As soon as you get close enough to the Fort The Imperials will detect the Stormcloaks inside their fort and attack them, resulting an instant skip of the first objective of the quest, since you could not even speak with Ralof you can not get the "sneak inside the fort" ojective from him. A fix to this situation is possible through a series of console commands. It will only work if took Liberation of Skyrim but didn't start the next quest from Galmar Stone-Fist much earlier. Now revert back to a save before you take the Rescue from Fort Neugrad quest from Galmar. Talk to him, start the quest then immediately open the console and enter player.moveto 0002BF9E this will move you right next to Ralof while he is on his way to the fort. Talk to him get the next objective (Sneak inside the fort) and then use movetoqt CWMission04 command. You will be moved to the secret entrance under the lake. Immediately go inside and follow the quest objectives and everything should work as they should.

This happened to me twice and I managed to solve the problem using these console commands. It can be added to the main page. --Heartseeker 10:57, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

I met Ralof - without any soldiers - outside the fort, and was able to get the sneak objective - however, using the movetoqt command above still made me instantly fail the objective. 124.170.3.177 13:43, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
My solution was to speak to Ralof to get the objective, then quickly use the console commands
setobjectivecompleted cwmission04 12 1
coc FortNeugrad02
which marks the objective as complete then transports you to (the wrong end of) the prison, where you can free the prisoners & continue the quest (there are no guards in the prison, which I am not sure is intentional or not). 124.170.3.177 21:25, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
It is also possible to fix the problem of the soldiers waiting inside the fort by moving them to the player.
The Reference IDs for the soldiers are: 000D67A0, 000D67A2, and 000D67AC.
If one types prid and the NPC ID they can be targeted remotely and then moved to the player with moveto player. One can place them near Ralof so that the group travels together and is more predictable. This makes it possible to sneak into the fort without automatic detection. Ralof and his allies start heading towards the fort (and apparently do eventually enter it), but this gives enough time for the player to enter the cave, and then the fortress prison, without the sneaking portion automatically failing. One could also disable ai processing with the tai command for a bit to get more time if needed.76.23.115.144 01:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Coinfirming this also happens on 360. Taku (talk) 02:25, 11 September 2012 (EDT)

Possible bug, confirmation needed![edit]

Besides the bug mentioned above (which I managed to avoid when I replayed the quest+), I've encountered another one: sneaking into the fort seems to be impossible! Although my character (Bosmer) has all the sneak perks, I was spotted every single time even when I still was quite far away. I've tried everything: walking slowly while sneaking (which should be unnecessary according to the perk), drinking invisibility potions, approaching the fort from different directions - nothing worked. Even the console command which shifts one right in front of the hidden entrance didn't work as I never managed to enter fast enough. Did anyone else have the same problem?

+If anybody is interested: after having received the task from Galmar, I did not fast travel to Fort Neugrad as near as possible, I simply went to the meeting point. I met Ralof on a road near Helgen while he was walking towards me. Turned out to be repeatable, so hopefully, it didn't just happen by chance. — Unsigned comment by 88.77.57.250 (talk) at 23:52 on 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Confirming[edit]

I ran into the same bug, no matter from where I approach the fort I fail the sneaking objective (either walking or sneaking, walking from the stormcloak camp or fast travelling) even with aura whisper showing me all imperials are far away and confined to the fort walls, therefor not having direct line of sight to detect me. Also, my active horse (a regular horse, not shadowmere) is stationed at the SC camp, far away from the fort

PS: After I talk to Ralof, he keeps walking towards the fort, triggering the objective to fail at the same point we do if we walk ahead first. using the movetoqt command will also get the objective to fail on arrival
PS2: Fast traveling seems to keep Ralof from entering the fort and beeing detected, but I think I figured out why. There were already SCs inside the fort when I stormed in, so they probably are already there, just waiting for a character to come close to trigger the fight to unpause. What I'll do is to set the "sneak into the fort" objective completed via console

I wasn't able to complete the sneak objective by normal means either. The guide suggests you need to go around the right side of the fort. Taking that progressively more and more broadly, I finally ended up going to GreyWater Grotto, then southeast to Southfringe Sanctum. It's impossible to go any further south; The only way to go is northeast and the objective fails once you get to where (what I assume is) a treasure map-marked treasure chest that I just stumbled upon. I then tried going to Haemar's Shame and there appears to be no way of getting to Fort Neugrad from there by heading southwest. So it appears this objective is impossible to complete unless you use the console as mentioned above. — Unsigned comment by 75.34.55.137 (talk) at 17:49 on 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Unable to talk to Ralof...Another Bug[edit]

Alright, so I snuck in (avoiding that unsneakable bug), Killed the guards (avoiding that bandit Bug), freed the prisoners, met Ralof, killed the rest of the guards, but when I came back out, Ralof won't enter general dialogue with me. Any ideas, workarounds, please-don't-say-reload-an-earlier-save-becuase-I've-been-relying-on-autosaves-for-the-last-2-hours, thoughts...

Actually, I did talk to him, but I think I just button-mashed through it or exited out when he was still talking. I did hear him say that he'll stay behind to clean up the mess, but my Quest-marker still points to him, and talking to the camp commander doesn't help. — Unsigned comment by 147.124.145.47 (talk) at 07:28 on 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Galmar won't say the right thing[edit]

I completed the battle for Whiterun. I went to the Falkreath camp. Galmar won't say the proper things to start the quest. I went to the fort and Ralof isn't there. — Unsigned comment by 9domino9 (talkcontribs) at 19:31 on 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm having the same issue. I spent a lot of time to join the Stormcloaks and capture Whiterun and all, just like the Wiki says, but there is no mention of any mission from Galmar. The Quests section says to liberate Markarth, but Galmar doesn't say anything about that either. — Unsigned comment by 99.98.13.176 (talk) at 03:34 on 3 August 2012
  • playing on xbox, I had this issue. Punch Galmar then yield to him - it reliably reset him in my gameplay, so that he would give quests. Hope that helps. — Unsigned comment by 222.152.154.45 (talk) at 08:59 on 16 January 2014‎
I have the same problem, but I tried the fix the person above me suggested on PC, couldn't even cause him to attack. He still says that he is in the middle of something and that he'll need me soon.

Can't commence - Galmar missing[edit]

Galmar is missing when I get to the Falkreath Camp and I can't seem to find any info or console commands on forcing the quest to start without him. Anyone got any ideas? I've done so many things in the game since taking Whiterun that loading an earlier save is really not worth it. Sioneld 08:28, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Okay so I tried moving to him and he was up behind the camp. Didn't give me the new quest, but then when I fast-travelled to the camp, he was there and I was able to get the quest. Sioneld 08:35, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Stormcloacks fighting bare-handed[edit]

As topic tells, my stormcloacks sheathe their weapons after rescued and coming out of the fort to the yard to fight the imperilas with their fists only. 88.192.180.243 05:50, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Forget it[edit]

If you have followers, it's almost impossible to follow the sneak in route for this quest. If your followers are Lydia in heavy armor (stealth -50) Serana blast-everything-in-sight, Aela (KILL MAIM HURT-A-LOT!!), Delphine (CHARGE!), Esbern (CHARGE!! with an atronach) and Barbas (Chaos rules!),... stealth? What's that? Sniffles (talk) 03:00, 21 February 2013 (GMT)

A way to fix Ralof if he is stuck in the report back to Ralof objective[edit]

using the console, click on ralof to get his ID, move to the inside of the fort, type in the console moveto player and he should start the dialogue. Good luck! — Unsigned comment by 24.154.240.172 (talk) at 23:18 on 12 March 2018
