New Page[edit]

Are there any plans to make a separate list for beverages (beer, wine, etc.) in Skyrim? Let me know. -Mishaxhi9999 November 15, 2011 18:14 (6:04 pm) (UTC)

We didn't do that for Oblivion (as shown at Oblivion:Potions, I don't see it as necessary to do so now. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 02:17, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
There already is a separate page at Skyrim:Food for those items that are classified as food instead of potions, which include some beer and wine. Note, however, that the breakdown is based on unconfirmed assumptions about the game data. The hope is that the breakdown matches the in-game breakdown -- whether the items appear in your inventory under food or potions. My feeling is that's the best way to categorize the items. Doing anything other than what players see in-game seems more likely to be confusing than helpful. --NepheleTalk 02:26, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

"a nearly infinite range of custom potions and poisons"[edit]

This is a gross exaggeration. There are only 760 custom potions and poisons that can be made (from a total of 24959 combinations that produce potions or poisons). The exact numbers on each potion or poison can vary due to perks and skill level, but in terms of effects you can put together, it's not 'nearly infinite'. --Fluff 21:51, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

And certain ingredients will produce stronger or weaker than average versions of the potion/poison. 24.156.216.144 08:19, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
But most ingredients have the same magnitudes. Usually there are only 1 or 2 ingredients for each effect, that have a different value. This doesn't increase the possible combinations that much (maybe factor 2). --Killfetzer 10:27, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Esbern's Potion[edit]

Since it hasn't been cataloged on the site yet, I'll just go ahead and ask: what exactly does Esbern's potion do? - Tahaneira 01:40, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

That is a very good question indeed. As a matter of fact, I checked this site to find out the very same thing. I just experimented a bit with it, and honestly it looks like it does nothing. By the discription I was sort of hoping I could stuff it into a soul gem or better yet, use dragon souls in enchantment. But no. After drinking and killing a dragon, nothing special happened. I went back to Esbern, no special covnersation option. And as suggested I tried soul trapping it, I tried being at the enchantment table. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was sort of hoping for something grand and special, but I suppose we just have to wait for someone smarter than me to tell us. ZeNinjaHawk 16:59, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
According to what I read, after some research, as what was said is in the Skyrim book, it supposedly reduces damage that dragons deal to you by 25%. I have not noticed a difference, as I do not pay much attention to the actual damage I take. — Unsigned comment by 66.66.224.14 (talk) at 22:31 on 26 November 2011
Esbern potion seem to be bugged aswell as the misc quest that ask you to return a bone and scale to Esbern.
Potion suppose to give ancient knowledge under active effects, but dosnt show. And the quest never "completes", just stays under misc. — Unsigned comment by 188.179.134.255 (talk) at 21:04 on 27 November 2011
I guess we'll have to wait for the modding tools to be released, then. Or for someone to hack the code. - Tahaneira 00:15, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
((Xbox version as far as I know)... Esbern's potion adds a permenant perk of 25% less damage from Melee attacks dealt by Dragons, thats the ancient knowledge referred to, currently glitched so no noticeable effect, and doesnt appear on active effects screen. The mission referring to dragon scales and dragon bones is currently glitched as well, No need to bring more scales/bones if the perk is permenant. So it's an obvious contradiction which needs to be addressed in an update. Using portion?[edit]

How do you use various weakness portions on the enemies, besides pickpocketing it into their inventory (not even sure if this works)? — Unsigned comment by 173.236.136.13 (talk) at 19:46 on 28 November 2011

I think they're supposed to be counted as poisons; you coat it on a weapon and hit them with it. The reverse-pickpocketing thing only works if you have the relevant Sneak perk. - Tahaneira 00:15, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Gold Values[edit]

I changed to the gold value of "Draught *" potions to those found ingame (some collected, most of them added per console). It looks like the gold value displayed in the inventory is stable and doesn't change with perks or on other factors. So showing those values seems to make more sense than showing game data values (with skipped factors influencing value not completely understood right now). --Alfwyn 17:12, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

I believe completing this quest will grant you a leveled invisibility potion if you choose to help Shadr. Alphabetface 18:42, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Also, I just found one in Geirmund's Hall, east of the Arcane Enchanter (down the dead-end hallway), though I don't know if that one's a random potion or if it's always a leveled invisibility potion. Alphabetface 23:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
There is a leveled potion of invisibility at Geirmund's Hall in the game data. Guaranteed locations I can see in the game data include:
Brief Invisibility - Vlindrel Hall, Fort Amol, Arch-Mage's Quarters, Knifepoint Mine, Grave Concoctions, Thaumaturgist's Hut, Olava the Feeble's House, Volunruud Elder's Cairn, Hall of Countenance, The Mortar and Pestle
Extended Invisibility - Kilkreath Temple, Twilight Sepulcher
Enduring Invisibility - Hall of Countenance
Leveled (LItemPotionInvisibility) - Geirmund's Hall, Sinderion's Field Laboratory, The Katariah, Morvunskar, Kagrenzel, Treva's Watch, Helgen Keep, Uttering Hills Cave

Philter of the Phantom[edit]

is it just a graphic effect, or does it actually do something(like people running from you screaming "omgwtf, a ghost!!")? — Unsigned comment by 68.41.92.135 (talk) at 15:29 on 29 January 2012

I always wondered that too, and only found 2 of these so far, and doubt there will be more. Wyndelius Gatharian used these to scare people away from the Tomb he was hiding in. Using one of these makes you look ghostly indeed, and People don't run away screaming, but they just don't know what's going on. I can punch a Guard in the face, stab him to death, dance around naked in the center town square, and yet NO BOUNTY message shows up. As the effect wears off, everybody acts like nothing happened. The Philter is REALLY usefull for certain Dark Brotherhood missions and should not be wasted for no reason.MarukiTheFaceHater 06:05, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Actually, Shroud Hearth Barrow (where you get this potion) resets every few days, so you can return and collect more vials of the potion. Wyndelius Gatharian's inventory also resets (yet his body remains) so you can also collect more potions from his inventory as well. ?• JATalk 06:19, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Holy Water?[edit]

I was reading this, and noticed one of the items was Holy Water. What is this related to? Is it after trashing Dibella's temple in Sanguine's quest? I've never found it, I think, so I don't know. Does anyone know what it's for?27.252.231.90 03:45, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Holy Water is needed for a quest - forgot which one, but I carry a note of Supplies needed to repair something which includes it. I just haven't found any yet. --208.74.128.1 22:16, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, Holy water is mentioned in Repair Supplies. But you are never actually repairing the staff during the quest A Night To Remember. I would actually be surprised if there would be a way to get "Holy Water" during regular game play. --Alfwyn 22:32, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
I know this is way out of date, but I believe when Sanguine refers to 'Holy water' on his list, it is actually those 2 bottles of wine you find lying around the Dibellan temple perhaps alcohol is holy to him.188.221.233.208 15:59, 24 March 2013 (GMT)

Stacking potions / poisons[edit]

I'm wondering if we can stack the effects of potions / poisons - like time it lasts, or points of damage? I tried using 2 carry weights, which did not give me extra weight to carry, but have no idea if added extra time as I was fast traveling. — Unsigned comment by 208.74.128.1 (talk) at 22:10 on 29 January 2012

Potions with MATCHING PROPERTIES are NOT stacking, but the TIME refreshes; if you take one of the exact same Potions again 1 second before it runs out, it resets the timer. Taking a Potion with DIFFERENT Magnitude (for example, 1x Fortify Carry 50% and 1x Fort. Carry 51%) COULD stack (look at "Fortify Restoration exploit"), since that is the case with at least 1 other Potion, namely this particular "Fortify Restoration Potion", it, as I said, COULD be. Or a "better" Potion "overwrites" the lesser one when drank. To Poisons: nope, how could they stack? A poisoned weapon says "... is already poisoned" when trying to use another Poison on that weapon.MarukiTheFaceHater 06:00, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
"To Poisons: nope, how could they stack? A poisoned weapon says "... is already poisoned" when trying to use another Poison on that weapon."
You apply "Weak Aversion to Fire" (or one of the damage over time poisons). You attack. You apply the same poison! You attack again.
Does the victim have:
  1. 40% weaker to fire for 30 seconds (Refresh Time)
  2. 80% weaker to fire for 29 seconds (Increase %)
  3. 40% weaker to fire for 59 seconds (Increase Time)
  4. 80% weaker to fire for 29 seconds followed by 40% weaker to fire for 1 seconds (Overlapping and Stacking)
  5. Other? :S
Also same question with different strengths, like "Weak Aversion to Fire" with "Aversion to Fire".
Given what you say about potion stacking I assume same effect strengths will increase the effect time and different strengths will overlap/stack.
Should there be a section on the main page explaining how effects stack?87.112.214.2 16:23, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes I didnt think far enough about that poison stack. I was probably meaning that once applied, you cant use another one, but that is obvious - what I really meant was, I am (still) convinced that using a poison of the same type applies only a timer-reset. So the victim will have:
40% weaker to fire for 30 seconds (Refresh Time) on first blow, after 5 seconds the next poison of same type is applied, and victim will have:
Same strength (40%), 30 seconds (Duration resets)
My experience showed me that this seems the most likely, as with poisons that work over time. An instant damage health poison of 50 would deal 100 points if applied twice. But timed potions and poisons always reset time as far as I can tell.
It is no use to use a weak and then a strong timed potion/poison, as the stronger one will not overwrite the strength, but will reset the duration.#MarukiTheFaceHater (talk) 03:40, 16 May 2013 (GMT)

Created Potions Bug[edit]

Not sure if this belongs on the potions page, or on the alchemy page, but I made several restore 51 points of health potions. I currently have 10 in my inventory and when the number gets down to 2 and I try to use them, it crashes the xbox. — Unsigned comment by Evlydia (talkcontribs) at 22:16 on 4 February 2012

Not sure if this is a bug, but I've made a few potions of Fortify Enchanting in order to increase the Fortify Alchemy skill on my armor. Well everytime I drink the potion the game runs fine until the Active Effect timer runs out then my game freezes and I have to restart my Xbox. I dont understand why this is happening. Can someone offer advice on how to fix this? 69.160.178.231 03:16, 12 May 2012 (UTC)residentevilpro 23:16, 11 March 2012
There seems to be an issue with created potions on the PC as well - though instead of crashing the game, when the potion wears off, there's a chance any other potions of the same batch will vanish from the game, regardless of location. The item reference vanishes as well, so summoning replacements via console is impossible. 86.175.64.54 18:03, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
A workaround for this was to make another potion of the same strength, or just another potion of the same type, and the others will re-appear - allegedly. If this is not happening to anyone since the Patches came out, this should be archived -> makes no sense to have a bug reference on the page, that never happens to anyone since May '12. Btw, playing on PC, I've never had that glitch happening *knock on wood*.-MarukiTheFaceHater (talk) 11:26, 16 May 2013 (GMT)

Thief Potions[edit]

Potion of Blood[edit]

Not sure if this is the right section to put this in or not, but as I don't see a seperate section for individual potions, I'll just mention it here. I turned my wife into a vampire for The Gift quest. The game doesn't actually change anything about her, just gives her a one time line of dialog. But for RPing purposes, I decided to give her some Potions of Blood while we were out adventuring together. And then while battling some some Falmer, I got the notice that feeding had cause my vampiric powers to recede, something that puzzled me at first, since there was nothing around to feed on. Not even sure I had Vampire Seduction or anything. But then the message popped up twice more as the battle progressed. And I noticed the gold healing swirls around my wife as she battled a Falmer. So I checked her inventory after that fight, and found she'd used the potions.

So, I haven't tried repeating the experiement with other followers, but it would appear that if you give a follower a potion of blood and they use it, it counts as feeding for the player. Anyone care to confirm this? — Unsigned comment by BunBun299 (talkcontribs) at 00:03 on 13 August 2012

Yes! Followers drink it, I was playing though Dawnguard, as a werewolf no less, when I gave a potion of blood to Serana, and in the middle of a dungeon, She drank it when she sprung a trap, and it gave me the same message, now I have the vampiric spells and active effects, while still having Beast Form, this is a serious bug indeed.--DavidTheWise (talk) 00:02, 22 September 2012 (GMT)

-- Yes, I used console commands to removes the stage four weakness to fire and sunlight, this seems pretty persistent, Even though after I got the powers and reached stage four, I did not get immediately jumped by civilians, this could be because the game still considers me a werewolf. — Unsigned comment by DavidTheWise (talkcontribs) at 16:16 on 22 September 2012‎

Guaranteed Locations?[edit]

Should we add the guaranteed locations of some of the rarer potions to this list? Because for example I know The Hag's Cure in Markarth ALWAYS has a Potion of Ultimate Magicka in stock the first time you enter because it's a fixed display item on the shelf behind the counter. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 07:23, 20 November 2012 (GMT)

"Thief Cache" barrels?[edit]

Here We currently have, "These potions are only available from the Thieves Guild's "Thief Cache" barrels." Which containers are these, and which are not? Does the interface identify them as such when offering the use command? Are they all the containers (not just barrels) in the "Lockpick practice room?" --JR (talk) 20:26, 30 December 2012 (GMT)

This will need further investigation, but from what I can see in the CK all those potions end up in a leveled list TGCachePotionsSpecial25, used by TGCacheBarrel ("Thief Cache") placed in the major cities (15 of them). Now DB removes the potion list from those caches and puts it into the DLC2TGCacheBarrel ("Thief Cache") in the house of Glover Mallory (just 1). --Alfwyn (talk) 21:01, 30 December 2012 (GMT)

Cure Disease Potions from Silver Hands[edit]

In a recent edit, the percentage for cure disease potions form silver hand was changed from 9% to 10%. Like the original number, no back up on the claim is given and verifying the number is non trivial. According to our style guide, information should be accurate and verifyable, this information seems to be neither. Better to get rid of it?

Here is my breakdown for the chance: LitemPotionCureHMS has a 25% chance at a cure disease potion. This lists result is used in LootSilverHandPotion at a chance of 33%, the other 66% it is a cure disease potion anyway. This results in 74.25%, but there is only a 25% chance the list returns anything at all. So that sublists chance to actually return a cure disease potion is 18.5625%. Now the list has the each flag set and at LootSilverHandRandom we get two chances at it. So the chance to get at least one is (1-(1-.185625)*(1-.185625)) ~= 33.68% . Now we have only a 75% chance to get anything at all with that list, making it a final 25.26% chance to get a cure disease potion from that list. Doing 100 experiments with preview calculated results in the CK on the list LootSilverHandRandom, I got a cure disease potion 29 times (no case of two). The list is used directly by silver hand NPCs. Since the test fits my calculated result much better, I'll put it onto the article.

Did I miss something here? But I guess, all this shows how problematic explicit percentage numbers on those articles are - chances are, they are all just wrong. Oh, and the LvlSilverhandBoss doesn't use the LootSilverHandRandom list at all, despite being named "Silver Hand" - making this number even more problematic. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:10, 29 January 2013 (GMT)

Thank you for correcting my mistake, I had originally calculated it to be 10% and checked it against the silver hand page, so assumed I was right. (Which should be changed now to fit the correct percentage.) Now I realise I was trying to calculate it the wrong way, and thanks again for showing me the right way. TheFences (talk) 21:26, 29 January 2013 (GMT)
Ok, I think I have figured out how to do CK test more efficiently than repeating them over and over. Using that for LootSilverHandRandom, I get an average of .28 cure disease potions per call. This seem to be right if we don't calculate the at least one chance (2*0.185625*0.75=0.2784375). Not sure which value is the better to document, but the average number would need a slight reword. Incidently the 3% chance for cure poison potions is supported by those tests. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:15, 30 January 2013 (GMT)

Crafting Potions Wasted?[edit]

When you use an Enchanting Altar/Alchemy Lab/Forge/Workbench/Grindstone/Whatever else I may be forgetting, the game does not appear to 'freeze' when the items available for crafting pops up. What I mean is, the game continues to happen during crafting. However, does the fact that things still happen when you are crafting mean that Potions used to enhance the skill (Enchanter's Potion, for instance) dissipate WHILE the crafting screen is up?

In other words, if I only have 1 of the really high-level potions for Smithing, and I use it, I only have 30-odd seconds to increase my items? And, if time runs up halfway through the enhancing, does the effect stop, meaning I can only enhance half of my items fully? Piffinatour (talk) 06:29, 19 February 2013 (GMT)

I am not sure exactly what you refer to as wasted, but probably yes. The effect of a potion can expire during your tempering if you take to long time. You will probably observe that some of the weapons at the grindstone or armour at the workbench suddenly grey out when the effect ends. The problem might be a bit more acute with altars and labs, as you will still be able to enchant and mix, though the result will not be as potent after the effect of the potion runs out wasting some of your ingredients or souls getting a lower quality result than you wished. —MortenOSlash (talk) 12:41, 19 February 2013 (GMT)
Yes. While enchanting or smithing and brewing Potions too, the time carries on. That is a reason why I made a mod which changes the Durations of certain Potions. 30 seconds, come on Bethsoft... Fun Fact: in the olden days' games of the TES-Series, the potion strength AND duration both increased based on your equipment and skill. But it is notable that in Skyrim, only Invisibility, Slow and Paralysis have a "modifying Duration", because the dont have a leveled base magnitude, and use a fixed magnitude.-MarukiTheFaceHater (talk) 11:32, 16 May 2013 (GMT)

Unceasing Magicka Poison[edit]

The page indicates that their are "no known sources" for this poison. I happen to have one of these and I play on the xbox. As to where/how I acquired it, I can only be sure that I got it on Solstheim. Whether I got it from a drop or if it was lying around somewhere, I wish I could remember. It was a terribly long time ago and I had no idea at the time that it was supposedly unobtainable until I just read this page (I haven't seen another since which is what prompted me to do a search on it). Sorry that I can't offer more information than this but I'll reiterate that I play on xbox so there has to be a way to acquire it through normal means.174.0.228.60 07:42, 18 April 2014 (GMT)

Unceasing Magicka Poison OR Deadly Recovery Poison (and their lesser variants) can be farmed one time from a specific location in the Labrynthian Thoroughfare. Shortly after passing your first Troll in this area, there's a gate with bars that need to be lowered. After using the nearby lever and passing through the gate, hug the left wall and go up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, turn right. There's an unremarkable chest with random loot and one of these rare poison variants will be on the floor to the right of the chest. I've farmed the Deadly Recovery Poison during several playthroughs of both the PS3 and PS4 versions. As the Labrynthian doesn't respawn, you'll have to make a save before entering the Thoroughfare area for the first time and reload if the poison you wanted isn't there. 96.42.79.118 17:36, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Lotus Extract additional bottle[edit]

There's actually another Lotus Extract bottle in the Windhelm Jail barrels, the middle one if I remember correctly. I found it while playing on the PS3 version, so it belongs to the base game. I've looked into the game files, and I found nothing. Assuming you meant the windhelm barracks, as there is no windhelm jail, and the barraks is where the prisoners are held. I could offer a bucket, a tankard and a bottle of nord mead on a barrel, though. Maybe you confused the lotus extract with the mead?. -- SarthesArai Talk
It is not a bottle of mead, but an actual Lotus Extract bottle. The place I'm referring to is the jail where Wuunferth the Unliving ends up, and the bottle is in one of the barrels to the left of the room as you enter. I'm playing on a French copy, with all the DLCs already included, but I doubt it makes a difference. I asked someone else on the ES wiki to try and find it too, and apparently they did. Seems to be quite a mystery, if you didn't find anything in the game files...— Unsigned comment by 86.73.190.13 (talk) at 19:35 on 10 December 2015 (UTC)
