VN - Odahviing is "only" flame dragon[edit]

What does this mean? I've encountered a couple of unnamed Flame Dragons. --Fluff 20:42, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah that should be removed. I've encountered many Flame Dragons as well besides Odahviing. — Unsigned comment by 67.168.149.21 (talk) at 04:06 on 30 December 2011
Are you sure you've encountered other flame dragons? Because I'm level 65 and I have not encountered any other flame dragons except for Odahviing. I think you might be referring to Ancient Dragons, because they have a reddish color also. 72.68.154.112 21:05, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps they meant he only comes with firebreath vs random dragons which can be frost OR fire. - Vainamoinen-Talk-Stuff 04:18, 23 November 2012 (GMT)

Soul[edit]

The box labeled "Soul" should not be empty, should it? I imagine that it should be a Dragon soul. I've never killed Odahviing, so I can't confirm this, but I'm pretty sure that A) he has a dragon soul and B) the page should be updated with this information. Jak Atackka 04:52, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

more than likely that information was dropped in by a bot that went through the data files and the soul box is meant for petty-black. aka what soul for trapping and use in enchanting/recharging and dragons do not have trappable souls--Lord.Baal 07:39, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
But dargon souls are useable. Just in another way. I think als dragons should have dragon soul in this field. --Killfetzer 08:39, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Makes sense, even though the field is used to refer to soul "size" when it comes to soul gems and Enchanting, I would think "Dragon" would be acceptable. I'm going to go ahead and start adding that to each of the named Dragons. Rhoan 17:18, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Moved note.[edit]

  • He cannot help you while in caves or buildings, but outside he is very valuable.

I have moved this note, because it is prety worthless to have on this page, because of course if you are inside a cave or building and you call him, then he can't help you. JackTurbo95 16:58, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

The undead dragon added by Dawnguard can be summoned inside. The note could be useful for anyone who plays through Dawnguard before the main quest and is expecting Odahviing to work the same way. 173.73.159.61 17:03, 30 November 2012 (GMT)

Essential Status.[edit]

Shouldn't it be noted on his page that Odahviing is essential? Although it sort of goes without saying because he can't die, his status as an essential character should be noted in my opinion. 72.68.154.112 01:12, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Unable to find Odahviing after leaving Dragonsreach.[edit]

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

I encountered a problem after talking to Odahviing in Dragonsreach. After releasing Odahviing, but before talking to him in order to have him give me a ride to defeat the main dragon, I left Dragonsreach to retrieve some goods. I tried to return to Dragonsreach to complete the Odahviing quest, however, I am led to the dungeon in Dragonsreach and I'm not able to find Odahviing. Basically, I'm walking around in circles trying to find him. I've tried to call him using the shout inside of Dragonsreach and Whiterun and outside, as well. This happens on the 360. Any fixes or tips? — Unsigned comment by Marliss (talkcontribs) at 16:40 on 15 March 2012

I attempted to replicate this issue on the PC; v. 1.29.0.8 which included the Unofficial Skyrim Patch. I trapped Odahviing, spoke with him, released him, and then left the great balcony, travelled to Morthal, waited 48 hours, and came back; Odahviing was still there and waiting for me, capable of engaging me in dialogue. Anyone else capable of replicating this issue? GodRaineTalk 03:10, 26 July 2013 (GMT)
It strikes me that the problem description mentiones being led to the dungeon in Dragonsreach, not the balcony. Does this mean the problem is just looking at the wrong place and that the simple solution is to look at the balcony rather than outside and inside Dragonsreach (including the dungeon)? —MortenOSlash (talk) 07:23, 27 July 2013 (GMT)

the strongest?[edit]

How strong he actually is when comparing with other dragon?(Vvardfell 12:59, 21 March 2012 (UTC))

He appears to be as powerful as a regular dragon.. — Unsigned comment by 85.230.52.122 (talk) at 15:06 on 1 April 2012
Depends on the level you got him. I got him at high level and he is as strong as an Ancient Dragon. He has 3071 Health, 150 Stamina and 264 Magicka just like any regular Ancient Dragon. I called him on Master Difficulty when I was facing an Elder Dragon, & Odahviing doesn't have problem to defeat it. Although it took very long since both Dragons kept flying most of the time. — Unsigned comment by 94.76.50.63 (talk) at 09:51 on 20 April 2012 (GMT)

He doesn't level[edit]

What if you disable/enable him, will his level update like that of an NPC follower?Varus2319 09:22, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

It seems not unfortunately. With my first character I got him at level 24 & his level is capped at 40 since then -(2255 Health, 140 Stamina, 230 Magicka-. Now my first character is level 79 and Odahviing is still level 40. I tried to disable/enable him with no luck. But in my second playthrough I got him at level 56 and and his level is 50 -(3071 Health, 150 Stamina & 264 Magicka)-. The level 50 version is significantly stronger than the level 40 version. and he doesn't receive as much damage when attacks. Hope modders have a solution for this. — Unsigned comment by 94.76.50.63 (talk) at 10:01 on 20 April 2012 (GMT)
The recycleactor command appears to be effective in resetting Odahviing's level. It's still randomized like when you first encounter him, but run it a few times and a level 50 Odahviing should be attainable after the initial level set. A cursory test didn't reveal any adverse effects; he'll still appear at the Throat of the World and come when summoned. Shinymoogle (talk) 02:20, 29 November 2013 (GMT)

Burial Mounds[edit]

The page on dragons says Odahviing's burial mound is located around Riften. Where does this information come from? --Ghilz 04:22, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Check Skyrim:Atlas_of_Dragons, near the top. - 122.57.36.6 06:05, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Highest level?[edit]

With the new dawnguard DLC, dragons now go up to legendary. Will odahviing still have a highest level of 50 or will this increase to match the legendary dragons? KingK 13:25, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Apparently he is not level 50 at player level 36[edit]

In my own testing, I've found that at level 29, Odahviing is level 40, at 37 he is 20 (yes, weird, but I did update Skyrim between 29 and 37), and at 51 he is level 50. I don't know if these are the minimum/maximum levels for these ranges; these are just the levels I tested. Others should test this as well and if it's not just me the page should be changed, in case people are misled into getting a crappy Odahviing :)(Note if you want to test this: I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think I needed to use incPCS to level skills and thus level myself in order to get Odahviing to level.) --174.65.11.201 22:36, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Odahviing Dialog[edit]

It says in the notes section: "If he is downed in battle either from enemies or friendly-fire from the Dragonborn, the player can choose to speak to him (non-dialogue menu based) and can hear him say various single sentences before he flies off." Is this in the dragon language, or what, and what does he actually say? --Vulpa 16:35, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

I will try to add some dialogue now, thanks for pointing that out. RIM 17:00, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, I can't seem to find any dialogue for him on the ground, sorry. RIM 17:06, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Oh well. That's disappointing- I skimmed through the notes, saw that, and was immediately interested; it would have been a neat addition to the page. --Vulpa 17:26, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Unbug Odahviing[edit]

My sister encountered a bug where Odahviing sits on the ground when called, and doesn't do anything while you're being attacked. This may be related to the bug where he flies around without helping out. She fixed it by using the kill command. Since he is essential, he revived shortly, and joined in the fight. 83.119.189.36 20:29, 18 October 2012 (GMT)

Odahviing on Solsteim[edit]

I don't think it's a bug that he doesn't appear, it's probably sheer distance from Skyrim. While the Dragonborn is powerful, even his Thu'um has its limits.

75.138.8.228 05:47, 16 April 2013 (GMT)

Whatever the reason, bug or an intentional feature, we can only speculate. As there is, as far as I know, given no in-game reason for him not to appear it might be reason to think it is a bug. —MortenOSlash (talk) 16:05, 16 April 2013 (GMT)
I was just going over Odahviing's dialogue, and I have his lines at the Throat of the World on hand. Here's his last line in particular:
"Zu'u Odahviing. Call me when you have need, and I will come if I can."
This could be a clue that Solstheim is too far away; whether for Dovahkiin's Voice, or for Odahviing to arrive in a timely manner, is up for debate. My vote is to move it to notes. —Jellybee22 (talk) 21:18, 6 August 2013 (GMT)
I agree, this isn't a bug. I'm moving it to the notes section. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:31, 6 August 2013 (GMT)

Bug moved to talkpage[edit]

There was this addition to the page:

(BUG))After you beat Alduin in Skudalfn with all the helpers,at The Throat Of The World their is a bug where you have to fight Odahving and a couple other dragons. Odahving can't die but one of the others can die while the others just leave. You are left with Odahviing and cant finish the quest.

I find that a bit hard to believe, but in any case it would need further details on the circumstances. Odahviing doesn't just appear in Skudalfn or at the Throat of the World. What is needed to make him aggressive towards the player? --Alfwyn (talk) 22:40, 7 April 2020 (GMT)

Prehaps it means the short part where you return to Tamriel and some dragons (including Odahviing) gather atop the Throat of the World and do their short chant. If you attack one of the dragons, it will become hostile and attack. However, I would not consider this a bug as Odahviing is essential, and most creatures become hostile onced attacked. To answer your question "What is needed to make him aggressive towards the player?", the answer is an atack. If the player attacks Odahviing, he will become hostile.
