Item ID's

Does each box have it's own ID? Specifically the box in the thalmor embasy would be nice to add to my inventory since I apparently missed that for good. Not sure why that's missed for good, can't I just sneak back in? Confused because I got two before I took it to the thief's guild guy and they stacked but now after taking the quest a little further, they all show up separately except for the two that already stacked. — Unsigned comment by 76.98.59.192 (talk) on 23 November 2011

No, it seems like they are the same. Its form ID is 0009dfbb. --Timenn-<talk> 13:06, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
You can't sneak back in because the door requires a key and it's nowhere to be found. There are also invisible walls around the whole embassy so you can't jump over the walls. Babytoke 13:44, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
It is actually possible to get back into the embassy after the end of the quest. Go in through the cave you exit from and jump up as far as you can go on the wall facing the ledge and whirlwind sprint to the lowest part of the ledge. — Unsigned comment by 193.150.219.65 (talk) at 00:15 on 24 November 2011 (UTC)
It's also possible to use the "unlock" console command to revisit the Embassy. You'll have to use the command on the front door and a couple more doors behind it. Bleachi 00:46, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
Found this Video. It won't let me embed the video so here's a link. It shows how to get back in. http://youtu.be/AJlOBn1T3c4 Babytoke 03:40, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Reward?

What's the reward for this quest? Babytoke 13:52, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Prowler's Profit

I'm not sure exactly what the reward does, or how it works. I've heard elsewhere that there's a global variable called TGProfilersProfit that goes from 100 to 0.00 after completing the quest, but I don't really know what that means. I've also heard that some people have it listed in their "Active Effects" menu, but I reloaded several times before completing the quest, and never saw it. Bleachi 00:53, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

While I don't have the behind the scenes data, the effect of Prowler's Profit is to turn every random loot container into a jeweler's paradise. In my first dungeon crawl after completing the quest I pulled more than 44,000 gold pieces worth of gems from containers (urns, burial urns, chests, etc.) In my opinion, this destroys the already broken economy system. Even if invested in just about every shop, it would take you several hours of real time to sell it all and only 2-3 dungeons to max out your gold (a little more than 127,000). In hindsight, this quest wasn't worth the effort. Hypnotist 19:29, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Indeed, so illogical that they only have 1000 gold throughout the whole game, they are supposed to be traders, some of them sell weapons/necklaces with a value of more than 4000, many of them have 30,000 or more worth of stock to sell when you're a high level, but only 1000 to buy, doesn't make sense. It's much better to complete the thieves guild quests so every fence has 4000 gold and not waste perks. — Unsigned comment by 82.42.23.52 (talk) at 01:57 on 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I am also one of those who don't have it in active effect list, but now I am finding gems like crazy. 1 to 3 gems in almost all urns and chests. Now my house will overflow with gems. (ZekunD 09:14, 5 January 2012 (UTC))
I recommend using Thieves Guild fences as they have a nontrivial 4000 gold. Currently sitting on about ten pounds of each type of gem. They make very pretty house decorations if you fill a dwemer bowl with them. Money is only good for training and houses anyway. --Theothersteve7 19:17, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Thalmor Embassy

"(this gem must be acquired on your first and only visit, otherwise Whirlwind Sprint can be used to travel back through the exit cave)"

Wait, what? Which is it? It can't both be possible and impossible. 81.233.217.129 08:18, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

An alternative method is to use call of valor and have your summoned hero shout you onto the ledge. If you're having problems with the angle, just jump as they're about to shout at you and you should get the height you need to clear the ledge. 76.170.73.252 11:45, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Also you can jump a horse over the gates from within the lockpick-opened main gate which gets you access to a door that doesn't require a key. — Unsigned comment by 69.227.210.230 (talk) at 03:00 on 30 January 2012

The Pinewatch Stone

Isn't necessarily behind a Novice-locked door. When I was visiting, the door was Expert-locked. So I don't know... change that bit? 95.166.215.238 20:55, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Stacking boxes

On PS3 I have collected 6 of the stones so far and it seems all but 2 of them each take up a line. IE I have 5 lines in my inventory that say "Stone of Barenziah" (with one of those lines being a stack of two) instead of one line saying "Stone of Barenziah (6)". Is this a known bug, or not a bug at all? 217.129.86.249 02:47, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Same here, on PC. The ones I picked up before picking up the quest from Vex are stacked, the ones I picked up later are separate items. — Unsigned comment by 85.90.168.142 (talk) at 12:24 on 27 January 2012 (UTC)
It's more likely that like all items stolen unusual gems don't stack even though as quest items they don't display the Stolen label, the rest is coincidence, stolen gems accumulate as you burgle locations for the guild. — Unsigned comment by 92.204.97.100 (talk) at 03:30 on 28 February 2012 (UTC)

can i wear it

can i wear it?(Vvardfell 12:33, 24 December 2011 (UTC))

Do you mean the gem? No. Jreynolds2 18:14, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
No, i mean the crown(Vvardfell 03:16, 28 December 2011 (UTC))
Ha. Ok. That's a good question. I'm seldom helpful with good questions. If you find out, we'll both know. Jreynolds2 08:16, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
i found out, no, it is a misc item(Vvardfell 10:07, 28 December 2011 (UTC))

Prerequisite?

Do you have to join the Thieves Guild to do this quest? ThaneAquidneck 17:07, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

No. Not as a prerequisite. Finding an unusual gem will start the quest. Then an objective is to become a (full) member. Jreynolds2 00:39, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
To finish the quest, yes; otherwise you can't get Vex to identify the gems. You can collect all of the gems and talk to Maul before joining, but at that point, you can't continue any further until you join the Thieves Guild, because otherwise Vex won't continue the quest for you. 67.166.1.227 00:30, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Quest bug.

I have been through every single area listed to have stones in them and my inventory still says I only have 23 of the 24. I have gone through all places twice. Is this a Bug? — Unsigned comment by 68.12.171.47 (talk) at 09:11 on 13 January 2012

It may be. See the bug section on the quest page. Are you playing on a PC? Please comment again here if you want, and let us know if you find a solution. This quest causes many players a lot of frustrations in a number of ways. --Jreynolds2Talk 09:23, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

another bug?

actually i dont know what it is ,but i have collected 21 or 22 and the quest ubdated,i went to Vex and finished the first stage(she is sending me after crown now).so is it normal or bug,and you dont need to collect all 24 pieces together to finish that stage or what? playing on PC--Eqves 00:35, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

"Take" instead of "Steal" but receive a bounty.

I was in Wuunferth's room in the Palace in Windhelm, and the stone said "Take" rather than "Steal". Upon taking it I received a bounty of 250 since Wuunferth saw me. Should this be listed as a bug or notes?--159.182.1.4 18:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Funny, the same thing just happened to me. I grabbed the stone at the Blue Palace and it gave me a bounty of 250 gold. A guard attacked me and I had no option to pay the fine, in fact, I couldn't even talk to him. Then after a while he ceased the attack and my bounty had disappeared too. Strange things are going on here. I'll add it to the page. Wolok gro-Barok 18:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
It never says "Steal" even when it belongs to someone else. I grabbed Kodlak's in front of him, and it gave me a 500 bounty. Both for him and when I snagged one in Windhelm, I was able to pay the bounty. I've also had bounty glitches for other things, I think that's an issue with bounties, not bounties when stealing a stone. -Vardis 18:49, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
We never said it always said Steal either ;). However, since you were able to pay the bounty you are correct in removing part of it. Wolok gro-Barok 20:10, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
They always say "Take" instead of "Steal"; oddly enough, even though they're never flagged as stolen once they're actually in your inventory, some of them are apparently considered owned, and some NPCs may report you for theft (and you'll get a bounty) if they see you take them. Your best bet is to assume they're owned, sneak, and take care not to witnessed, when you take them. 67.166.1.227 00:33, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
If they are in a place where friendly NPCs live then it is stealing and you will receive a bounty if you are seen taking it. If it is in a place (mostly caves) inhabited by enemy NPCs then it is not a crime to take it. The verification of this is easy to do, accept the bedlam job from Devlin and take a stone, you will complete the job immediately and be told to return to Devlin, thus proving that taking is stealing. The Silencer has spoken 00:44, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Completing the quest without spoilers from this wiki

It turns out that if players follow Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Companions, and Main quest lines you would be able to find most of gems without any meta-knowledge from this wiki. For example, during missions (bedlam jobs) of Thieves Guild you will probably investigating Keeps thus finding number 2,4,6,7 gems. During a Dark Brotherhood quest line you might want to visit the House of Clan Shatter-Shield (or doing burglary job for Vex) getting gem 8. The quest about Forsworns leeds you to gem 9. Markath Thieves Guild mission leads you to gem 10. Near the end of Companions line you must visit the room with gem 3. A priest of Arkay in Whiterun gives you a tiny quest towards number 1. After first quest in Mage Guild you must visit room with gem 11 in. Gem 5 is coming after purchase Solitude house. Gems 15 and 21 in dangeons along Bard Quest line. Gem 13 is a side quest starting in Riften tavern. Gem 12 during one daedric prince quest. Gem 17 during Mage Guild lines (either finding books for the Orc-Librarian or its first mission). Gem 16 coming along Forbidden Legend quest line. Gem 18 and 23 during Special missions of Thieves Guild. Gem 20 is either Thieves Guild side quest or Mage Guild side quest. Gem 22 during the main quest line. Gem 24 after joining Dark Brotherhood.

The only nontrivial gems left are numbers 19 and 14. Since there is a World Wall next to Gem 19, Angier(or anonymous Friend) will point out you to this place(but it will take time). However, the trickiest part is number 14 in Ansuvild. If no radiant quest givers point you to this dangeon(the case in my current game) you must find it by youself.--31.128.147.192 08:12, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Actually - there is a minor quest to do there - a shield recovery quest from Roggi Knot-Beard at Kynesgrove.89.69.142.196 21:13, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I believe you mean ansilvund and you go there thru Onmund's Request 24.15.105.124 03:34, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
All these quests(Roggi or Onmund) are radiant ones so target locations are different in different playthroughs. Moreover, it seems that radiant AI prefer to set the player to previously unknown places. Actually I found that number 16 (hideout of Warlock Slid) also is a radiant one and no quest points you to this place for sure. However since there is a World Wall inside then either the Graybeards or Anonymous Friend will give you a reason to explore.--89.23.179.226 18:50, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm too lazy to read through them myself, but do all the various books or Barenziah possibly point you to the gems in some way? VSim 19:07, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
These books have been following The Elder Scrolls games since TES2: Daggerfall, so if there are any similarities with sections of the books and the hiding places of the gems it is quite probably purely coincidental. --MortenOSlash 22:22, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Another bug?

I was already a Nightingale when I picked up the first stone. Then, I had the stone examined by Vex. After that, I talked to Maul and he told me to become a full member of Thieves Guild. The journal updated, and "Become a full member of the Thieves Guild" appeared and remains incompleted till now. I can't become a full member again, and I am wondering what difference this could make. --FelixH 15:02, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

I was not a full member of the thieves guild when I had my first two gems. I completed the whole thieves guild questline. "Become a full member of the Thieves Guild" remained unfulfilled until I had all 24 stones. The quest progressed normally, and today I own ten pounds of diamonds. --Theothersteve7 19:13, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
It's a display bug only; it won't prevent you from finishing the quest. The objective "Become a Full Member of the Thieves Guild" never gets checked off no matter what you do. However, you only have to get the Thieves Guild questline complete up to the point you're declared a member (after you've shaken down the shopkeepers and reported back to Brynjolf) to continue the quest.67.166.1.227 00:37, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Ghost in the End

I picked up the Crown of Barenziah and a Dunmer Ghost appeared dressed in elven armor. It did not attack and didn't say anything but that's probably because I have the Warlock Ally faction. Anyone confirm this and what usually happens? (The Dunmer Ghost is not in either "Ghost" faction of Bc033 or d33a2.) --Tiger8u2 21:40, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

I saw that ghost too and it appears to be non-hostile, and doesn't respond to any attempt to interact with it. I think it's just there to let you know you're close. Lore-wise, the crown was being carried by a caravan of Dunmer on their way from Morrowind to Skyrim, that got ambushed and wiped out by Falmer. Presumably the Dunmer ghost was the spirit of one of those people that died in the caravan. Probably the one carrying the crown. 67.166.1.227 00:45, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

"Activate Barenziahs Crown" -What does it do?

Upon quest completion, the crown appears in the 'display' area of the guild. Unlike other items which have the option to "take", this crown has the option to "activate" (It says "Activate Barenziahs Crown" like a shrine). However, clicking doesn't do anything. No text message appears and my active effects menu does not change. Any ideas as to what this does or what it was supposed to do? (Don't know if it's relevant, but: My game did display text that said the Prowler's Profit was added, but it does not display in my active effects. Also, I had the bug where the Falmer Eye is not a quest item; it does not activate Litany of Larceny; and Delvin won't take it. XBox patch 1.4) --Amsuko 23:06, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

As mentioned in the bugs section, the effect does not show up in the Active Effects page for some players, but it is still active. The other wiki says that activating it has no effect, but I haven't checked it myself. --Velyanthe 23:11, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I didn't know it was a bug (about not having Prowler's Profit show up in active effects). I was just mentioning that I had that bug, in case it was relevant. I was hoping a PC player could see if there is some messed up script or something to explain why it seems to be set up like an alter that should give a blessing. --Amsuko 04:53, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Once the quest is finished and the crown is stationary, it is present as an activator rather than an object, though it lacks any scripts, which would explain its behavior--it's set up the same as a shrine but lacking scripts. There's no indication in the CK of what it may have been meant to do, unless the game developers planned to have Prowler's Profit as a renewable thing like blessings. If so, the effect wasn't added to the CK. --Velyanthe 21:58, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Crown of Barenziah not appearing on bust.

I've completed the main storyline of the thieves guild, have yet to restore it to what it once was. Just finished the quest line Stone(s) of Barenziah. I have all 24 and the crown, Vex says the dialogue to give me the prowler's perk, it doesn't show up on my affect effects (which I know can happen) but when I go to the cistern the crown isn't on the bust and all the stones and crown are in my inventory. Does anyone the PRID command to set the finished crown there? I know its not a big deal but it ruins the immersion for me to have hunted down these stones and not see the fruits of my labor. I've googled and searched on this site as well haven't found anything about this. — Unsigned comment by 74.51.68.224 (talk) at 18:10 on 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Reeking Cave

Does anyone know if entering Reeking Cave before Diplomatic Immunity causes the same bug that entering the Thalmor Embassy itself does? — Unsigned comment by 66.159.152.222 (talk) at 00:16 on 14 March 2012 (UTC)

If you mean "can you go into the cave and grab the stone before starting DI, without anything bad happening later?", the answer is yes: I (try to remember to) do it to kill the troll so Etienne doesn't get creamed by it on the way out, and the first time was completely by accident long before even doing Bleak Falls Barrow. Aliana 00:21, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

About the 25th...

I know Vex is good, but even she wouldn't be able to tell a specific stone, unless she's seen it recently, which leads me to believe she's known about this score for some time, and has one of her own, hence the instant appraisal.

Just a theory, take it or leave it.

Quizically, The Navigator — Unsigned comment by 75.25.61.1 (talk) on 9 April 2012

That is simply a brilliant insight (regardless of whether it's the "real" reason or not rather than just a bug). I'll offer more support for the theory: she also knows where the crown itself is, despite it being (a) worthless and (b) lost centuries ago, which seems like an awful lot of effort to have gone to for no reason, unless something (i.e. finding the first gem) prompted her to do so.
Alternatively, she stumbled across the crown's location first (but obviously not the crown itself, since she doesn't have it) and that prompted her to search for the gems, with one success, but either way the end result is the same and she has the missing gem. Aliana 00:02, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
