How to Burn[edit]

how do you burn the bee hive? — Unsigned comment by 74.192.30.101 (talk) at 06:18 on 17 November 2011

Use fire spells/flame breath shout. — Unsigned comment by 78.105.241.24 (talk) at 13:22 on 17 November 2011
Having a torch equipped and standing near a hive will set fire to it too. — Unsigned comment by 71.202.70.214 (talk) at 02:12 on 9 December 2011
I burned them with my bow. I shot them. The bow has a fire enchantment(obiviously). Seeker23 (talk) 10:25, 12 August 2013 (GMT)

Burning hives: mistake in the article[edit]

Article states that "The mercenaries will notice you after you've set the hives on fire." If stealth is high enough, mercenaries do not notice you. Done with PC version of the game at level 11, dressed in Fine clothes. — Unsigned comment by 80.220.69.249 (talk) at 21:26 on 9 December 2011

Setting the hives on fire triggers a new spawn of mercenaries to investigate; I know they're new spawns because I killed all the mercenaries outside before setting fire to the hives. Whether they detect you or not depends on your stealth. 75.80.97.155 10:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Where's the skill?[edit]

The TG quests are completely half-assed, if even that. Instead of casing the joint, timing your window of opportunity, and so on, Skyrim starts off with the shakedowns and then has garbage like this where nobody moves, nobody sleeps, "goal" paths are specifically designed to be impossible to actually sneak through, and the "best" way to deal with guards is to just waltz in wearing heavy armor and hack and slash everything like it was a dungeon crawl. You can see how that encounter with the last guard was *supposed* to be workable in so many ways (fire an arrow down the tunnel on the far side of him and sneak down when he moves, set the oil slick on fire, etc) but instead it's either cheaping out with invis pots or "look, more utterly generic combat, yay!". No wonder there's no Blood Price in the "modern" TG. Hugely disappointing. Aliana 06:50, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

You can JUST about manage the arrow trick at least, but without the DB gear it requires ridiculously high levels of Sneak for a quest this early in the line, and either luck or split-second timing. Aliana 07:01, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
I fired my arrow down the tunnel that I'd snuck down to get there, and easily got into the safe room(naked(to avoid sneak penalties from clothing with weight) and with a sneak skill in the low-30s) with time to spare. I edited the main article to reflect that strategy, rather than the proposed one, which seems to have low levels of success even with higher skills from what people have said. As for the sneaking, I used stealth through this entire quest with success. Admittedly, it wasn't anywhere near as challenging as the thieves' guild quests in morrowind or oblivion, but it was easily solvable through stealth. I actually thought that you'd fail the quest if you assaulted anybody, from how it was presented in the dialogue - is that not the case? 68.55.184.71 04:51, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
No, and that's one of the things that bothered me so much: you really are better off (in terms of results rather than roleplay) just stomping in there blowing a trumpet and Hulk Smash-ing everything. I like your suggestion: the one I put there was horribly luck/timing/etc-dependent. As is me having a new character setting out for Goldenglow in about an hour, so I'll try it out then, thanks. :) Aliana 05:07, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Actually this method doesn't require any skill on the part of distracting the guard. But if you have trouble sneaking to the dark area we talked about, you may need to first learn how to muffle. --Joshua.yathin.yu 05:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I tried shooting "backwards" a few times, and I agree: it's much more reliable. Nice work. Aliana 21:46, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I've just started Scoundrel's Folly for the first time, but so far I agree. To be honest though, since in Skyrim you're actually rather forced into specializing in a few skills if you want an effective character, making them somewhat more based on non-stealth emphasis characters is the only way to make them doable for all characters. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and just like in Oblivion I would really like to just make one very good to excellent, master of all trades character and do all the quests with them. But until Bethesda adds, say, a merchant that you can purchase basically unlimited perk points in some form from there is no way I can do that; and thus no way to make many of the thieves guild quests doable in a more reasonably stealthy form instead of a 'dungeon crawl' one. At least in my opinion. --75.207.217.104 06:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
don't forget that sneaking should be done while walking, not running nor sprinting (by default you "run" even while sneaking) 86.74.29.148 00:22, 8 September 2012 (EDT)

Error in walkthrough[edit]

"In the cellar will be some more mercenaries, only one of which is actually on the path to the safe. However, he never sleeps or moves; is staring directly at the path down - which is flanked by two candelabras; and has far too much health to be Sneak Attacked without either endgame weapons or massive Fortification."

I ko'd him with a power attack while sneaking. Dwarven+orcish daggers (with X15 perk) only level 18 with 37 one-handed. That is nowhere near endgame weapons and I had no fortification/spells/enchantments/potions. — Unsigned comment by 76.121.163.119 (talk) at 06:22 on 1 January 2012

Second Alternative[edit]

As noted above, there are other ways around the guard. I actually forgot that I had an invis potion.. got around him by pickpocketing him (with the 'Poisoned' perk) and dropping a 7 second paralysis potion into his inventory. — Unsigned comment by 72.89.174.88 (talk) at 03:49 on 4 January 2012

Stealth method on the last guard[edit]

Sorry to overwrite, but it seems so rare that three of us are actually editing the page at the same time. As our method seems the same, I think you won't feel too upset about it. Please, If you think there is anything to tweak on the current layout, do it. --Joshua.yathin.yu 04:54, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Of course the completely lore friendly option is to use the Throw Voice shout to distract him. He'll head off to investigate and you can duck by him easily. Triaxx2 16:56, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Broken Near The End[edit]

Good thing I am on a PC! After clearing the safe, getting the Bill of Sale, etc, the quest stopped there, not advancing to the point I need to return to Brynjolf. Had to use setstage TG02 50 to get past, this was on 1.4.21.0.4. Any other issues with this, or just bad luck on my part? — Unsigned comment by 71.234.174.69 (talk) at 13:03 on 3 February 2012

Not bad luck on your part, happened to me as well. And ever since 1.4.21.0.4. hit I have been experiencing similar issues in a ton of other quests, both questlines and "stand-alone" ones. — Unsigned comment by 94.36.84.210 (talk) at 19:29 on 4 February 2012

Dragons burning hives?[edit]

As I went about burning the hives for this quest, I noticed Goldenglow was under attack by a dragon. Thankfully it didn't manage to catch any of the hives on fire but I wonder could it? May be something to look out for. Taku 00:50, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Happened to me too. The dragon spent most of the time on/around the island with the house, though. Then it went to assault the nearby fort, and I chased after it since I wasn't far from killing it. I don't know. I didn't even have to blast fire at them to light them, but I would hope that at least during the quest the hives are impervious to any actions not undertaken by the player. Otherwise the mercenaries might light them on fire by accident by just walking by while holding a torch from one of the various stands.--75.207.217.104 06:24, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Dragons can absolutely burn the hives, costing you the reward. The first time I did the quest, a dragon attacked Goldenglow as I was on my way back to Riften. Not fun. 50.41.138.137 00:58, 15 February 2013 (GMT)

Freezes.[edit]

Happened twice after I'd got the statue, cleared the safe, got the bill (1st time I didn't read it, 2nd time I read it from my inventory) used the sewer exist and during the loading screen to skyrim the game and my xbox 360 froze. The 2nd time I tried exiting through the expert locked door and it froze again. I had Mjoll the Lioness with me (plus 2 dremora lords), and both times some of the mercenaries inside the house were invisible. I didn't have a save to right before I started the quest so I just went back to my last save and the next time I did the quest I went alone with no summons even. It took awhile to bring up the loading screen, but when it did it loading everything normally. Is there a bug with having Mjoll there. That was the first I've ever went to the trouble to get her as a follower, and I had brought followers (Marcurio or housecarls) along for that quest before. --Grelaria — Unsigned comment by 209.213.132.126 (talk) at 01:53 on 12 March 2012

Thief cache[edit]

There are supposed to be three in each of the five major cities once you do all improvement quests, and finish this quest according to the article. I have at least two appearing after merely starting this quest. Also, wasn't there somewhere that all the thief cache locations were listed by city? That list was quite helpful, and should be on the Thieves Guild page or broken up and put on each relevant city's page.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 07:40, 16 December 2012 (GMT)

Never mind on noting where the thief caches are, I figured out that one of the links in the Shadowmarks section leads to a separate with actual locations; not the book. Still, the caches in Riften showed up when I started the quest.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 07:48, 16 December 2012 (GMT)
That's correct. It might even be after finishing Taking Care of Business. Fixed.

Can't find the bill in the safe![edit]

I open the safe without the key and I only find money, 116 gold and that's all! No bill, and after i take the money, it still shows the arrow pointing on the safe! What do I do in this case? Help please! — Unsigned comment by 188.173.85.108 (talk) at 22:13 on 2 January 2013

Strange invisible walls...[edit]

While doing this quest I kept running into invisible walls whenever I needed to cross a bridge or go over water (and yes, I had already entered the estate via the sewers). Any idea on a possible cause? NPC's were also affected. 71.179.183.120 05:31, 10 February 2013 (GMT)

I have gotten this too... I have finished the theives guild quests before, but that was a long time ago.. Nethertheless these invisible walls are annoying, they brake the whole questline. Only one merc shows and he is broken, can't get to the bee hives without console commands and unfortunately they don't burn (sigh) does anyone know the code do finish this quest?

Impossible to pickpocket the safe key (and to steal the gold bee thingy)[edit]

I've tried in every way but i can't find a way to pickpocket the key in a stealthy way from Aringoth. He keeps crouching in his room behind some furniture, looking towards the door. I can't get close to him in any way without entering his LoS. Is this a bug that happens to me only?— Unsigned comment by 84.24.136.22 (talk) at 13:50 on 17 January 2014

No, I think it is scripted that way. You can persuade him to give you the key, but if you linger he calls the guards. I've successfully pick pocketed him whilst invisible, but then he spots me as soon as I leave the inventory screen. This quest is broken IMHO. 106.68.9.64 11:18, 4 July 2014 (GMT)
He's scripted to spot you at this point, but if you approach from the sides, even after detection, he will lose sight of you. If he turns hostile he loses the ability to spot you easily. You cannot take the bee without detection, but it isn't considered stealing so there's no consequences. The only reason he calls the guards is because he caught you stealing, he's not even calling the mercenaries, it's just standard thief detection guard calling. Persuasion[edit]

I just tried to persuade him with 52 speech level and the Persuasion perk, but to no avail. He still won't give up his key. I'm not sure if this means your information is incorrect, but still, I am very annoyed. 84.24.136.22 18:50, 17 January 2014 (GMT)

Thanks for noticing, I've corrected it. The so-called 30% easier isn't a straight subtraction or division, it actually works very oddly. Mathematically speaking, where you would normally use division, it would be 42% easier (i.e., divide the required amount by 1.42, so 75 / 1.42 = 53). The only level at which it could be considered 30% is at level 100, where 100 - 30 = 70. At lower levels, it's proportional to the difficulty. I'm not sure if I'm explaining that very well, but hopefully you get the idea. If not, the documentation at Speech may help. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:37, 17 January 2014 (GMT)

Invisible walls and unable to set fire to beehives[edit]

Like the previous commentator, after getting the key, then cleaning out the safe (and a few other areas), I went to the beehive isle and I was unable to walk across the bridge - an invisible wall prevented me from jumping in the water or going on the bridge. I had to use tcl in the console and then I was able to continue. But after that I was unable to set fire to the beehives with spells or a torch. Sigh.
