Stats[edit]

he has great stats. on 50+ level he has 500+ hp and magicka, 100 in one-handed, heavy armor, destruction

he should be good, the best maybe "spellsword" in game. greater than nice Eola. but in fight he is just lame mage. first he has "mage" AI. not the spellsword. he doesn't use weapon at any range. the second, his only offensive spell is sparks. so in the end he is 500 hp tank using sparks all the time. — Unsigned comment by 91.150.223.236 (talk) at 23:44 on 3 December 2011

He does not ONLY use sparks, he will use his other available offensive spells outside of sparks range. Unfortunately sparks has fairly decent range. You can see him use lightning, firebolt and other spells at dragons in the air quite frequently. --Berserkenstein 07:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Sparks Bug Fix (PC Only sorry)[edit]

If anyone is having the problem where J'zargo only casts Sparks at a ridiculous level, try targetting him in console and type "disable", followed by "enable". From then he should be casting lightning bolts and whatever spells as intended. This will not remove any items you have given him, or break any conversations had. This is a FIX, not a CHEAT.

This works for all the followers afflicted by the bug where said follower is stuck with the stats/abilities etc (can't confirm the extent of the bug) that they had when you first meet them in Skyrim.

Taken from google searches, personal experience and similar pages on UESP Drakenz 07:24, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Disable/Enable "trick" updates his stats, but the bloody cat still solely uses Sparks (tested with a lvl 48 character) — Unsigned comment by 31.47.8.167 (talk) at 23:52 on 4 December 2011

J'Zargo Sparks and Fistfighting[edit]

Not only is this stupid cat always using sparks, it will use fists instead of any weapon you give him.

I have not found ID of sparks he is using to remove it via "removespell" command... tried all sparks ID's found with "help sparks 0" Cannot remove his Thunderbolt either... This cat has some spells specially crafted for him or I have no idea what he is using... If you give yourself all spells with "psb" command, you can see that there are indeed 2 sparks which have very weird name to them I cannot get ID on those. (the very first spell in your Destruction tree after you use "psb" command)

This idiot cat wont respond to "setclass" command either... tried setting him as a warrior ID he still uses spells and fists. Even took away his racial +15 Claws... still uses fists. Changed his race... still uses fists. — Unsigned comment by Sukha (talkcontribs) at 12:30 on 4 December 2011

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want him to use his fists? A Khajiit's Claws are much better than most weapons?--ClaydohWizard 08:27, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Claws are +15 damage. The vast majority of weapons in the game if you have skill in that area (as J'zargo does in 1h) are far more damage than 15. Baron 22:14, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

What the hell[edit]

I've seen on few website that J'zargo could be the only NPC to be able to reach lvl 81 !! Here is the address https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0Aly8njaU3H1adGJYTlJaUnRxRUN2RnM5MkxPaU1mQkE&toomany=true#gid=0 of what I'm talking about! — Unsigned comment by 65.92.82.98 (talk) at 17:52 on 16 December 2011

It is so noted. Good catch.--Zar Pof 11:02, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
too bad I sacrificed him to boethia 189.32.209.198 03:11, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I think Dark Brotherhood Initiate can reach 81 also, if i'm not mistaken. VycDarkshadow (talk) 01:43, 13 December 2012 (GMT)

Reenlistment...?[edit]

So, i let him go so i could quickly get items from an old follower (Lydia) at Breezehome. Whenever I try to talk to him, he only says something about this being the end, hoping it would be different or something. I can't get him to follow me again... I haven't finished the mage quest line yet, so I'll try again at that point. In the meantime, is there any fix for this on the 360? --DGTexan 05:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

You have to finish the questline before he will rejoin you. --Berserkenstein 10:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Changed one of the notes.[edit]

I changed the last part of the line that read "The first time you speak to J'zargo he will say "You are new, Yes? Have you mastered the Expert level destruction spells yet?" However even if you have mastered all destruction spells the only available answers are still "Not yet, but I will." and "That's far beyond my level of skill."

That info is incorrect and misleading. The requirement is not having all expert level spells, the requirement is having the expert destruction perk. --Berserkenstein 10:51, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

this response is incorrect. it is based on your skill level, and has nothing to do with perks. — Unsigned comment by 98.176.242.147 (talk) at 21:45 on 28 January 2012
No, it is indeed correct. I just did a test on a new character. Went to talk to J'zargo for the first time with 100 destruction skill and no expert destruction perk, only "Not yet, but I will." and "That's far beyond my level of skill." Tried again, this time with the expert level destruction perk. The only option is "Yes I have." You are also supposed to sign your name on talk pages when you comment. --Berserkenstein 00:11, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

J'zargo turns all your scrolls against you.[edit]

This might be worth adding to the non-existent "bugs" category or something. There is currently a bug where the player's AoE scrolls such as Paralyze, Fire Storm, and Blizzard will work against the player character once you accept (or finish?) J'zargo's quest at the Mage's College.--Varus2319 05:02, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Uses Turn Undead[edit]

I have noticed him using Turn Undead multiple times. Used it heavily (along with Sparks,ugh...) in Labyrinthian in the area with all the skeletons and skeletal dragon. DownloadableContent 04:32, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

I've seen this happen too, especially with low level Draugr. He hits them with a spell and they flee with that 'fear' effect swirling around them. It's pretty evident that he does indeed use Turn Undead as a follower. 86.146.170.64 15:34, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Re: Verification Needed on Note[edit]

Re: Verification Needed on "Once you aid him, he is willing to follow you. However, if you have killed a number of Khajiit, he will not follow you."

Just did an independent test using my character on Skyrim (PC v. 1.6.89.0.6) in which I have killed several Khajiit, but J'Zargo was still willing to follow me. In specific, the dialogue option "Follow me. I need your help." was only available after I had dismissed my existing follower (Marcurio), which I assume is normal behavior. Can anyone else also confirm that this statement is false? --GodRaine (talk) 04:15, 22 February 2013 (GMT)

Paralyze?[edit]

Never seen hime use paralyze, does he only use it after reaching a certain level?--82.46.168.98 08:10, 22 March 2013 (GMT)

Can anyone else confirm he uses paralyze as a follower and if so what the requirements?--82.46.168.98 10:36, 7 July 2013 (GMT)
The Paralyze spell is on his list of spells, so he is able to cast it. Whether he will actually use it in combat while he is your follower depends on his AI package, which may weight towards lower-Magicka spells, since Paralyze is rather Magicka-intensive. --Xyzzy Talk 05:08, 21 July 2013 (GMT)
In the spell list, paralyze is marked with an asterisk which indicates that he does use it as a follower although I have never seen him use it.--82.46.168.98 15:45, 29 July 2013 (GMT)
Tested, he uses it only if he has a lot of magicka. Even on lvl 81 he wont use it unless he is given strong fortify magicka items in my case four enchanted items with fortify magicka 70pts. He indeed use paralyze — Unsigned comment by 66.90.164.132 (talk) on 19:34 UTC, 3 April 2017
Set his alteration above or equal to 75 using the console (normally it's 15 no matter how high level he is), then he'll use Paralyze very often (with Spark on the other hand lol). Same as Turn Undead, when his restoration is above 50, he will use it very often to the skeleton. 182.239.89.95 16:16 UTC, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

"Bugs"?[edit]

"Once you complete The Eye of Magnus and become the Arch Mage, J'zargo will become hostile towards you, stating that you only brought trouble to the college, but he only says this once before going back to normal dialogue. He will also become unavailable as a follower. ?"

No, I think this is wrong. my character is archmage since a long time, has completed the eye of magnus etc. and got him as a follower. the "bug" seems to exist no more. --2.246.166.193 20:44, 11 October 2013 (GMT)

I've removed it. It is somewhat dubious, and has been unconfirmed since its entry on the page 3 months ago. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:03, 11 October 2013 (GMT)

Also, bug that says he will follow you even if you already have a follower appears to be wrong -- at least on PC.

J'zargo level cap??[edit]

Today I was playing with my level 50 argonian mage and looked in the console for the level of him with getlevel command, it seems the USKP limited his level up to 30. Can someone confirm this? — Unsigned comment by 186.39.191.254 (talk) at 03:16 on 30 October 2013‎

Yep, I'll note it on the article. Thanks for bringing it up. — ABCface 04:15, 30 October 2013 (GMT)

Level cap[edit]

I dont think that his unlimited lvl cap is a bug. He keeps talking about stuff that will make him stronger, I think its normal. 117.201.85.89 07:51, 27 July 2014 (GMT)

That's why its a note, the format is to notify that the USKP, which is recommended for many bug fixes, choose to apply one to him. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 08:18, 27 July 2014 (GMT)

Buggy[edit]

So J'zargo is stuck on saying that "this is the end, and J'zargo thought this was a safe place" dialogue and i cannot access dialogue and he repeatedly says this. I tried the disable/enable and resetai console commands, nothing worked. I am using Amazing Follower Tweaks mod if that affects anything. Please require assistance!!! — Unsigned comment by 129.130.18.62 (talk) at 07:55 on 8 April 2015 (GMT)

J'zargo Experiment - an attempt to eliminate you statement[edit]

Not sure about the statement that he attempts to eliminate you by giving you his own prepared custom spells so you go and explode. I became archmage and I had taken this quest from him, and before that he accepted me as being the archmage. I completed quest without any troubles for myself and made him a follower. After some time, I recruited him, equipped him and gave him his remaining spells back. He happily started to use them, blowing himself alot while I was busy with other enemies around, far from him. He used them all, and I forgot about his experiment. While technically this could happen because he tends to use all magic available (no matter what spells or weapons you equip him with), I find that charming somewhat, so, it looks like he did not mind that and he was honest. — Unsigned comment by 95.188.77.254 (talk) at 17:15 on 21 December 2018 (UTC)

About J'zargo's Flame Cloak....[edit]

I'm not familiar with flame cloak spells, but the descriptions tend to say such spells harm opponents. J'zargo's may or may not have hurt my character (the undead was doing that anyways so I wasn't paying attention to where the damage came from), but the flame cloak DEFINITELY damaged follower Lydia, who, after enough damage from it, quit following ("your follower has left you" or some such message) and started smiting my character's squishy mage self with her sword, two-shotting me.

I don't think I see this anywhere in the wiki.... If I'm right, shouldn't we mention this kind of thing? Is this true of all flame cloaks spells (so, not just opponents), or just J'zargo's? (I mean, part of the point of the story is that his flame cloak doesn't work the way it's supposed to, right?) --Natpoor (talk) 19:07, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Yes, his scrolls do not work as normal. This is noted on the quest and flame cloak pages. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:40, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
Oh look, the page/link I neglected to click on!!! (The quest page specifically, not just the overview on J'zsrgo's page. After clicking on lots of others and tracing around the wiki....) Which.... does indeed say exactly what I was looking for. --Natpoor (talk) 20:23, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
Ok I realized why I failed to read the quest page -- I don't usually look for links in header text, so didn't notice the header for this sub-section was a link, combined with how J'zargo's page has a lengthy enough write-up on the quest that I didn't think there would be a separate page for the quest itself. So what I did was try out the links in the body text of the section, and so didn't find the quest page. I have added a bit of text to the end of the section which yes is a spoiler but it is hopefully more clear about what might happen (follower killing you == YASD) and includes a link to the more expansive quest page. --Natpoor (talk) 22:51, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

heal other[edit]

I see that he is marked as being able to use heal other as a follower. has anyone ever seen him do this? Retroambassador (talk) 06:33, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
