Number of plots?

Is there a source for the note that mentions three available plots to choose from? The wording of that note suggests that there are *exactly* three, rather than *at least* three. I haven't heard any official word regarding the number of plots, so I'm wondering where that info was obtained? -- 50.131.64.152 06:14, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

The [Bethsoft website has more detailed information, including confirmation of the number of plots. SilencerSpeak 10:52, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
3 plots exactly for sure.--JIGSAW 4 15:28, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
These were also the "minor holds", in which you couldn't buy a house, I think they may have planned this.--Ninja1eye 16:33, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I agree. --JIGSAW 4 11:27, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
"Three plots of land are available for purchase, in Hjaalmarch, Falkreath and The Pale; it is possible to have more than one plot in each hold, allowing you to build a real estate empire."
The way this is phrased sounds like you can own multiple plots within each of the three holds. Unless that's actually what was intended (doubtful) is there a better way to word it? 64.138.235.149 14:05, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

() For the more ambitious landowner, purchase multiple plots and start building a real estate empire. The official line is rather ambiguous, making it hard to determine the actual facts. SilencerSpeak 14:10, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

customization

Do players only get to change the furniture and decide which rooms they want out of preset models? Does anyone know if this mod actually allows you to customize the layout, the structure and all. — Unsigned comment by 69.37.32.72 (talk) at 17:48 on 30 August 2012

Nobody knows anything more than what's on this page, because the plugin is not available yet for another little while. ES(talkemail) 17:57, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Figured, couldn't hurt to ask though, thank you — Unsigned comment by 69.37.32.72 (talk) at 18:01 on 30 August 2012
each room has a limited number of options that you can choose to build or not, you do not get to choose where these elements are placed. For example one can add the master bedroom wing and not put the children's beds in it, but then the space is not utilized by anything else Deanmakoma (talk) 22:22, 5 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma

Children

why do you have to adopt the children? Why couldn't just have them? Also where would you adopt them? — Unsigned comment by Awsomedawg (talkcontribs) at 18:11 on 31 August 2012

The technical difficulty of implementing that into a released game would be enormous. No info on where to adopt them is available, an speculation will get us no-where. SilencerSpeak 18:27, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
"Hearthfire also allows the player to adopt children. This idea came about due to level designer Steve Cornett pondering what became of the children in the orphanage after the Dark Brotherhood questline Innocence Lost was completed." 64.138.235.149 13:29, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Childrens Bedrooms

I just got a letter from Proventus, the Jarl's steward in Whiterun asking me if I want to add a Child's Bedroom to Breezehome. I presume this isn't in the vanilla game so it should probably be added here :) — Unsigned comment by 86.148.97.119 (talk) at 17:33 on September 4, 2012

Yes, this is from Hearthfire, I'll try to add it. The Silencer (talk) 13:35, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

Different building materials?

In the main entry it states that "Structure types consist of stone, clay, and wood." However, in the "House Parts" section of the Hearthfire items page, it lists no way to get different "structure types". Basically what I'm asking is this; Can you build, say, a house out of stone, a house out of clay, and a house out of wood? Or will all the player-built houses look the same? 173.74.58.197 16:51, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

All of these items are used for building the same house. — ABCface 16:53, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
So, it should say "Building materials include stone, clay, and wood," instead of what it says now? Because as it is now, I thought it meant I could build a stone house, instead of that I need stone to build a house. In any case, thanks for the clarification. 173.74.58.197 17:04, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
I see what you mean. I can reword it on the article to clarify. — ABCface 18:59, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

Family Moving In?

Ok how do I move my family into my new home (Wind Manor I think the name is), I built it fully and am currently working on adding all the furniture, no matter how many times I try, I can't get an option to move in. --76.178.130.226 19:53, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

From what I recall you can move in your spouse and child if there are the appropriate number of beds, and at least a chest for the child to store his/her things in. 68.227.51.216 17:30, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
The above is correct. A separate bed for each child is needed. Once you choose to create a child's bed, an option becomes available to create a "child's chest". If you don't have these, you can't adopt a child to move in with you. — ABCface 18:01, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
The downstairs wing addition has a child's chest for each bed. If the beds are upstairs in the main hall, there is a dresser between the beds that needs to be built before children can move in. Then their stuff is kept in this dresser, if you give them gifts and clothes, what they are not using is stored here. They also leave gifts for you in this dresser. New alchemy ingredient?

While running around my new house I found a hawk egg alchemy ingredient in a nest on the roof. Is this new? Or did I somehow miss this ingredient all this time? 67.170.48.108 20:12, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

I'm fairly sure it's an "original" ingredient. I think I found one before in Bloated Man's Grotto. 82.132.239.93 20:48, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
well I just found salmon roe, which I know is new. 174.253.208.212 22:51, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
These are both new. There is no hawk's egg in the original version of the game, not in Bloated Man's Grotto or anywhere else. — ABCface 13:13, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
Fair nuff. My other half came across a nest in Bloated Man's Grotto with a hawk in residence and I must have put two and two together and made 96. About the salmon roe, where are people finding it? I'm looking in the rivers where the salmon swim, got lots of fish but I have no idea what I'm looking for in regards to the roe... I know they're eggs but that's it :/ AyaHawkeye (talk) 17:34, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
No biggie, just clarifying so anyone reading this later doesn't get confused. As for the Salmon Roe, there was a sample in my kitchen when I built it, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. — ABCface 18:01, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
Salmon Roe can also be used in Windstad Manor's fish hatchery to populate the waters with salmon. Garland (talk) 20:56, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

() The Hawk Egg ingredient is identical in alchemical effects to the Chicken Egg: Resist Magic, Damage Magicka Regen, Waterbreathing, and Lingering Damage Stamina. The only location I have found Hawk Eggs is atop Heljarchen Hall. Hawk nests in Bloated Man's Grotto were devoid of this item, as I suspect other pre-Hearthfire nests are as well. Green Thumb doubles harvest amounts just like other nests and I would urge someone to at least make a page for this item. Thank you very much. Garland (talk) 20:05, 8 September 2012 (EDT)

I hadn't created a page for this item on purpose because I couldn't remember for sure if it was "Hawk Egg" or "Hawk's Egg", and I couldn't get on my Xbox to check at the time. As a patroller, I didn't want to create the page with an incorrect name, so I figured I'd wait until I could verify it before creating the page. Anyway, I'll go ahead and create the page later today, and link to it from Hearthfire Items. — ABCface 09:10, 9 September 2012 (EDT)
It turns out it is in fact "Hawk's Egg", not "Hawk Egg" as currently listed on the Hearthfire Items page. I've confirmed that the effects are the same as those for the Chicken's Egg, and I'll go ahead and create the page shortly. After the page is made, I'll update the name and add the link on the Items page. — ABCface 15:27, 9 September 2012 (EDT)

Expanding

I got the game and only have the option to build a small house how do I go about building a HUGE house. — Unsigned comment by 71.227.109.211 (talk) at 02:06 on 5 September 2012‎

Admittedly, I don't have Skyrim, but maybe it's like in other games where you have to initially start small? Maybe try playing it for a while? I may be wrong, since I don't have the game, like I said, but it's worth a shot, haha. Snowmane(talkemail) 22:13, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
Did you try going back to the Drafting Table and drawing up a plan for a Main Hall? RearEchelon (talk) 22:48, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
(edit conflict) You have to start at the drafting table to choose a part of the house to build, then go to the carpenter's workbench to actually build the part you chose. Unfortunately, you're kind of forced to go back & forth a lot between the two repeatedly. Each house starts out as a small basic house, then you add on sections one at a time-- you have to add a main hall before you can add one of three wings (east, north, and west) onto that portion. — ABCface 22:49, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
Im lvl 55 so lvl isnt an issue but i havent tried going back to the dafting table i just bought more land — Unsigned comment by 71.227.109.211 (talk) at 01:15 on 6 September 2012‎
That's what you have to do. Go back to the drafting table and choose a plan, then go the carpenter's workbench to create it (anywhere from 5-10 steps for each plan). After completing one plan, you can start another. — ABCface 21:48, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Ingredients that can be grown in the greenhouse and/or garden?

Anyone have a list of ingredients that can be grown in the greenhouse (or the garden)? I'm particularly interested to know if Jarrin Root can be cultivated. -- 50.131.64.152 05:45, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

You can cultivate anything that grows in the ground, so long as you have it in your inventory. Pick snow-berries, go home and plant those that you have picked. — Unsigned comment by 203.96.149.96 (talk) at 23:48 on 5 September 2012‎
This is false as both varieties of Nirnroot (normal and crimson), Yellow Mountain Flowers and Poisonbloom all are unavailable for planting. I suspect that Jarrin Root would also be unavailable due to the lack of a model for the plant. Garland (talk) 20:52, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
Gleamblossom is another which grows in the ground but can't be grown in the garden. — ABCface 21:48, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
When you activate the fertile soil a list of plantable ingredients in your inventory will pop up. Seems to be limited to those things you would pick up along the road or on the floor of a cave Deanmakoma (talk) 22:32, 5 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma

Giants Gap?

Okay so someone listed that the land plot in The Pale is near Giant's Gap, however there is no such location listed anywhere in the game or on this site. I'm wondering if they meant Blizzard's Rest which would put it south of Dunstad, east of Blizzard's Rest and southwest of the Nightgate Inn. Can anyone give us a more definite location? Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 01:56, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

I don't know the exact distance but I would say it's probably a thousand or so feet directly West of Blizzard's Rest. I mean they look practically on top of each other and when I am viewing Heljarchen Hall it's text covers/obscures the mammoth skull for Blizzard's Rest. 66.79.63.160 04:54, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
It's the Jarl who says it's near Giant's Gap too, so it's actually mentioned in game. I'll have a look around and see if I can find anything... AyaHawkeye (talk) 15:27, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember a stormcloak soldier in sovngarde mentioning Giant's Gap. 206.109.97.84 21:49, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
There is no dialogue in Skyrim data that references a Giant's Gap, a giant gap or anything in-between. It may be a reference to it being a mountain pass between two Giant Camps, Blizzards Rest and Stonehill Bluff. It could be something said by an NPC, though without Hearthfire's data this is hard to find. The Silencer (talk) 22:28, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
The Game definitely states Giant's Gap as the marker for your house, but it might just be that general area, not a specific location. Also, Giant's gap is referenced in several other locations such as here Holdings of Jarl Gjalund. "Volunruud - VOLUNR5D - A Fortified Wooden Hall near Giants' Gap. Meat and Worked Ivory." 67.170.48.108 22:30, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I must have missed that punctuation type. Well here's the soldiers dialogue "Near Giants' Gap, in the gloom before dawn, we marched, unsuspecting into the Imperials' trap. Then we stood and fought, our shield-wall defending until by dawn's light the Legion's ranks wavered. But I never knew if nights-end brought victory - a swift-flying arrow to Sovngarde carried me." Which doesn't reveal anything about its location. The book is the only other source with that punctuation. The Silencer (talk) 22:46, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
Well Volunruud is fairly close to the same area, so I assume that is where Giants' gap is. 67.170.48.108 22:54, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Your house steward furnishing problem

The section in bugs saying your steward doesn't furnish your rooms is wrong, it usually takes a couple of days and the response saying you can't afford it is obviously wrong but occurs when the steward should be saying, "Stop asking, I'm working on it, ok?" That part of the bugs section should be edited or maybe removed entirely. The Source (talk) 15:35, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

I asked my steward to furnish the Alchemy Tower and Library. I waited over a week, both inside and outside the house, and they are still completely barren. The dialog options to furnish those wings were removed once I selected them. There's clearly a bug there. I'm not the one who listed that in the wiki, but I will add my support to keeping it there. I'm using the Hjaalmarch house, on Xbox 360, and my steward is Valdimar, the Housecarl of Hjaalmarch. It's seriously annoying; I've had to spend about 10 hours manually furbishing each room in my house, running all around Skyrim looking for Goat Horns and Mudcrab Chitin and such. I've probably spent more septims on the resources than I would have had to spend paying the steward to do it for me. But I don't have any choice, as my payments to him aren't working. -- 50.131.64.152 17:29, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
That might be part of the problem, you might be misunderstanding what the steward actually does when asked to furnish your house. They don't actually place items in your house as you're meant to, you'll see small changes like a shelf here and there and maybe a barrel and a couple of sacks. If you're adding things too it's possible what little they do is actually blending in and might be missed. The Source (talk) 18:06, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I wasn't adding anything to those rooms. They remained completely empty after 1 week of waiting, despite me paying the steward up front to furnish them. -- 50.131.64.152 18:53, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I can comfirm that my Heljarchen steward (Gregor) does not furnish this house when you pay him to. I left it barren intentionally, and have waited two weeks (in game time) and the house is still empty. No new dialogue is available for him, and curiously I still have the option to have him furnish my entry, yet he says I do not have enough gold for that (untrue). I did not have this problem with Windstad (furnished as requested, though sparsely). I did not try this with Lakeview. 174.71.76.4 18:58, 5 September 2012 (EDT)haphsaph
If you leave the house and fast travel to a different location (so there is a load screen) some items appear. Just waiting in game doesn't work. However, not all items appear when you're back, you have to go back and forth. I dunno if you're out doing something long enough not just waiting if it is all there or something though. — Unsigned comment by 76.217.229.58 (talk) at 01:37 on September 6, 2012
I left and started decorating another house. Spent about two weeks going from hold to hold collecting ingots and whatnot. Came back to a still completely empty Heljarchen. However, YMMV 174.71.76.4 02:26, 7 September 2012 (EDT)haphsaph

Have you pursued the Civil War storyline, or the Dark Brotherhood storyline? "We" (my husband and myself) had no difficulty buying the property from the steward who gets appointed if you side with the Stormcloaks. Also, if you have any radiant quests active (usually found under Miscellaneous) they can interfere. As can the Dark Brotherhood quest that results in the demise of the Jarl's bodyguard, Helvard. In short, the Falkreath house is kinda picky. 24.22.241.1 18:08, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Stewards

Can we make a list of available stewards? I started to make one on my own because I wanted a housecarl and a steward. NOs: J'zargo, Janessa, Stenvar, Derkeethus, Mjoll, Erik the Slayer, (drunk guy from Silver Blood Inn,) and obviously Serana. I was able to make Faendal and Annekke Crag-Jumper stewards, but not Benor. I can confirm that Uthgerd the Unbroken can be a steward, and that J'zargo, Mjoll the Lioness, and Jenassa cannot be stewards. I believe the Dawnguard wood elf companion referred to is named Beleval. Seulja (talk) 18:46, 7 September 2012 (EDT)
I tried to see if Aranea Ienith would be my steward at my home in Falkreath, but the dialogue option never came up so I am guessing she cannot become a follower. Instead I ended up with Annekke Crag-Jumper. For my home in The Pale, I ended up with Eric the Slayer. However, no stewardly dialogue options come up with Eric, he just wants to gain more experience in the field and be a follower. Perhaps that changes if I use him more as a follower? I have yet to set up in Hjaalmarch. (Magskall (talk) 21:46, 8 September 2012 (EDT))
I have tried twice with Eric the slayer but had the same issue so I took him to river wood and dismissed him. Possible Bug(s)

Hey, just created an account to see if any one here can help out.

I bought cildren's rooms in both my Solitude and Riften houses. Upon going to Riften house after buying the room, my housecarl disappeared. She is not a follower, I'm using Serena as my follower. In Solitude, my wife disappeared after buying the children room. My wife was Mjoll the Lionness( I believe thats how its spelled). This hasn't happened to me until after I downloaded Hearthfire. This may be a bug, or its just my game. Can't hurt to ask.--Nornad (talk) 19:17, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Just keep going back to general goods stores and the khajiit caravans. They are sold by these merchants, but in different amounts and not all the time. This is the case for straw as well. — ABCface 21:48, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I noticed glass and straw didn't seem to restock like other goods; I replenished my supply in Solitude several times, buying 4-7 glass per trip. Though I waited several days between each visit to Bits and Pieces, the glass was always the same as it had been after my last purchase, and eventually it was gone, and it didn't come back. I just visited other general goods stores (Belethor's in Whiterun, Riverwood Trader, Pawned Prawn in Riften, etc.) and they all had a supply as well. -- 50.131.64.152 04:14, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

Do you have to choose between each option for the wings or can you build each of those rooms on each wing? I do not have the add on I just want to get an idea of content and its rather unclear on the page. — Unsigned comment by 69.37.32.113 (talk) at 01:16 on 6 September 2012‎

You can get one north wing, one east wing, and one west wing. Each wing has three options (East: enchanting tower, master bedrooms, greenhouse; West: library, kitchen, armory; North: trophy room, alchemy tower, storage room) so you cannot actually get all nine options at any one house. However, you can get all the crafting amenities even without getting the rooms specifically set up for them. — ABCface 21:48, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Guys, do you know, if you want your wife (and kid) to move in with you do you need to choose the Master Bedroom for the East Wing? If so then is it impossible to be both a family man and to have an enchanting table? Thank you, Paul. --176.251.21.177 05:39, 6 September 2012 (EDT)
No, when you build the main hall the upstiars has a master bedroom and a room for the kids, make sure that you build the beds for the kids and the dresser that is placed between the beds to get the adoption option, the 2 cupboards are not enough. Deanmakoma (talk) 07:12, 6 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma
Also, the main hall has options for an arcane enchanter and alchemy lab, so even if you don't choose those towers, you can still get those benefits. — ABCface 08:57, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

Gregor gone missing

I hired the housecard Gregor to be my steward in the Pale. At first I couldn't get the dialogue option for steward so I used the steward in Hjaalmarch to buy wood. Once the house was pretty much built I got the option for Gregor, then he disappeared. Will I be able to hire another person to be steward at the house in the pale? Is he just hanging out somewhere? Frequent Attacks

My stead in Falkreath seems to be under attack by beasts every couple of days. One time I walked outside to find my housecarl fighting a pair of wolves. Another time I walked outside and literally bumped into an angry giant.

The wolves, I understand.. the giant seems to have no business being anywhere near there, not to mention he was immediately hostile, no weapon or threat. --DaedalusMachina (talk) 06:07, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

The hearthfire trailer mentions the giants and skeevers as threats that you need to defend your home and family against. I've experienced both, the giant in Hjaalmarach and the skeevers in the Pale. Wasn't sure what to do with the skeever bodies in my cellar once I killed them so I left them and once I returned they were gone (maybe my MIA steward Gregor took care of it, heck maybe that's why he went MIA). I've also fought bandits in Hjaalmaarch with my steward (my husband just crouched on the balcony fair enough since he is unarmed). There are also horkers on the beach in Hjaalmarch, but they don't seem to bother us if we don't get too close, the NPC's range seems to keep them out of the horkers way Deanmakoma (talk) 07:09, 6 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma

Not Receiving Adoption Letter!

Level 40 with 4 houses and 1 completely new furnished Falkreath house (with bedroom). The courier gave me the letter to build in Falkreath, but he didn't give me the adoption letter. I've been playing for hours and he still hasn't given me it. I can adopt off the streets (I have Lucia) but when I try to adopt at the orphanage Constance tells me the children aren't up for adoption!

Same thing happened when I tried on my other character, Jarl letter but no adoption letter. What do I do to fix this?

The courier bringing the adoption later from Constance Michel seems to be related to Grelod the Kind's death. found two more bugs in Hearthfire

1st bug: I had my follower take the contents of one of my chests in Solitude, all really cool weapons that I had collected while playing Skyrim. To my dismay once I traded back my weapons from my follower they all became Stolen items. To me this is a serious issue since these were weapons that I had earned thru combat or by completing missions. I hope this is fixed so that they are no-longer "Stolen"

2nd bug: I have completed my manson in Heljarchen Hall, got all my armor maniquins, then equipped them with my Thieves Guild armor, Summerset Armor, Guild Master Armor, Nightingale Armor, etc. Looked really Fine!! Now I go back and the maniquins do not show the armor and they are off their pedistals, what up? — Unsigned comment by 165.151.220.22 (talk) at 16:57 on September 6, 2012

Neither of these are from Hearthfire, they existed in the original game, and have not been fixed. The Silencer (talk) 13:05, 6 September 2012 (EDT)
May be a 'bug', but it's a prior existing known issue. As in, I've experienced it from before Dawnguard, almost on day one. My theory is that, since the container is marked 'owned' by you (which is why it doesn't reset), your follower is in fact stealing, and the game treats it the same way as if you tell your follower to take something from someone else's container in their house.Ruze84 (talk)
I don't know why this worked for me, but I had this issue wherein items would become "stolen" and in frustration I dropped all of them on the ground. When I scanned over them with my cursor about half of the items were no longer "stolen" - I could just "take" them off of the ground and they were back to normal. Choosing a Steward

In the book "The Beginner's Guide to Homesteading," found on the drafting table, the section on stewards implies that the choice for your steward matters. I initially built Heljarchen Hall and, like most other people building a home in that area, I chose Gregor as my steward. When I paid him to furnish my home, he apparently failed to do so. (I say apparently because I am leaving room for the possibility that I am misunderstanding the process- perhaps a steward purchases options on the workbenches?). Does anyone else think that there might be 'good' and 'bad' stewards? --216.67.20.112 15:01, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

ETA: I built a new homestead at Windstad, chose Lydia as my steward, and had none of the problems obtaining furnishings that I did with Gregor. --Negativeiamacapsicle (talk) 16:27, 6 September 2012 (EDT)
It may be possible (according to my observations) that this has something to do with a given follower's morality and/or aggressiveness. Thusfar, I have noticed a pattern in which all NPC's listed on this discussion page under "Stewards" that are confirmed steward candidates have a morality of "no crime" OR are labeled as aggressive (half of them being both). I have yet to see an NPC that is listed as both "any crime" and unaggressive that is able to be a steward (such as Derkeethus). These are only my observations and are subject to change based on further testing of potential stewards. Seulja (talk) 18:56, 7 September 2012 (EDT)
Although this is edging on a forum topic, it can be used to list any benefits discovered by having a particular steward. Any debating of which is the best should be taken to the forums. The Silencer (talk) 15:05, 6 September 2012 (EDT)
The reason I felt this was best as a discussion topic, rather than a forum topic, is that the whether or not stewards failing to complete tasks such as buying furnishing is a glitch rather than an intentional part of game play is currently being hotly discussed, both here and elsewhere on the internet. My understanding is that the purpose of this wiki is to provide as much accurate information as possible, and aside from the main page the discussion section is the first place any reader will look for additional topical information. --Negativeiamacapsicle (talk) 16:27, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

I believe, but have not confirmed, that the number of children you can adopt is a direct link to the number of child beds you have (and they must be child beds). "Adopt" param for NPC Summary?

I'm wondering if we should consider adding an "Adopt" parameter to the NPC Summary for all children who are adoptable with this plug-in, similar to the existing "Marry" parameter for all marryable NPCs. In fact, it could even be used in the same place as the "Marry" parameter, since the two groups should be mutually exclusive. (Only adults can be married, and only children can be adopted, so there's no overlap.) Not sure where Babette sits in this regard, though you can't marry her, and I'd assume you can't adopt her either, so that rules out any such complications. (Is she the only non-adoptable "child" in the game? If the rule is that you can adopt children if their parents die, I'm pretty sure most if not all other children have parents, other than those who start out as orphans. Some parents may be essential and unkillable, however. Anyhow, this kind of question is exactly why I think we do need such a feature in the template. It might also make sense to list how and when they become adoptable. (As in "Who has to die?") Not that I'd recommend players go around killing people just in order to adopt their orphaned children, but people might like to know, if for example certain townsfolk are killed in a dragon attack or something. TheRealLurlock (talk) 22:26, 7 September 2012 (EDT)

I agree, so long as not every child is adoptable, this may mean waiting until the PC version so the data can be checked, or we could go by word-of-mouth for now. If they're all adoptable, and it's only because of essential parents/being Babette, then maybe a note for just those few children that can't be adopted. How to help

Is there anywhere that details how things work in hearthfire? Specifically, how does one utilize the numerous display cases in the houses, they do not seem to work like the display cases in the other houses for weapons. I tried dropping things into the cases but they just end up on the floor. Also how does one activate the fish hatchery? I don't know what to do there either and cannot find an answer for the how to Deanmakoma (talk) 18:51, 8 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma

I see this alot "The display cases aren't automatic how do we use them?" You do it manually with the grab key like you did in Oblivion for those who have played it. This is so you can display things like troll skulls and what not. I do admit the grab key was easier to use in oblivion as things 'moved' to their weight. In skyrim they move to awkward angles and you have to use walls, furniture, and the like to turn the items or you get lucky and drop the items from your inventory and they sometimes land on how you want them. Bug jars for instance like to be placed upside down instead of right side up because of the hidden weight. And when you try to manuever a wine bottle or jug of milk it always acts as if you are grabbing it from the center so they want to land on their side. In oblivion, items had multiple 'grab boxes' so if you grabbed a wine bottle in oblivion from the top it acts as if it's grabbed for the top allowing much easier placement than in skyrim. But if you grabbed the bottle from the middle or side it would act like that too. With Skyrim it's one big grab box, instead of LB it's press and hold A, it makes grabbing bodies sort of easier but posing bodies was easier to do in oblivion. Like I stated before you must do the placement manually.--67.185.108.121 19:49, 8 September 2012 (EDT)
OK so I placed the items manually which took a while and when I exited the house and reentered, everything I placed in the cases was on the floor. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Deanmakoma (talk) 16:28, 9 September 2012 (EDT)deanmakoma
Yes. You have to drop everything in a pile, leave the house then re-enter the house cell then manually place everything. This wasn't a problem in Oblivion except for Sigil stones. The only way to truly place those without them moving on you was to either drop them where you wanted ((even then they still moved)) grab it from your inventory or even telekenis to place them.--67.185.108.121 17:40, 9 September 2012 (EDT)

New adopted child glitch?

Short story: My child is over-encumbered somehow and now I can't give her gifts.

Detailed: I ran across what appears to be a new glitch, since I haven't found anyone else on the net who've had similar issues. It started off when I discovered how to resolve a glitch that prevented me from purchasing my Falkreath home. I went back to a later save in which I was still living in Hjerim and hadn't adopted Sofia from Windhelm yet. I built my Falkreath home and went back to Windhelm to pack up my wife and things. After a bad experience with a follower ordered to carry my stuff turning it all into "stolen" property, I loaded up about 6,000 units worth of encumbrance and made my towards my new home. On the way out of town I adopted Sophie, but when I got to my home and unloaded my junk I found that I couldn't give her any gifts. The options were greyed out and when I tried, it gave me a message that "this item is too heavy". I think somehow her inventory glitched and caused all her item (or mine) to duplicate and over-encumber her. I can't pickpocket her to lessen her load, or get her to follow me and trade items. Moving (while unencumbered) to a new house doesn't solve the problem. Nor does adopting a new child, waiting, or anything else I've tried.

Anyone know of a workaround or a fix? This really sucks because I wanted to give her a wooden sword and have her train to be just like her mommy. Will they grow to resent you after a while if you don't/can't give them gifts? — Unsigned comment by 67.236.67.193 (talk) at 00:20 on 9 September 2012‎

I have the same issue as you, but with Aleson (my story is a few categories above). I had no issues buying land or getting followers. I have tried all the same things except moving, however. I even emptied his gift chest thinking it might be a psuedo-inventory for him. No luck. It's frustrating, really frustrating. Sorry I can't offer a solution, I just wanted you to know you are not alone.

I attacked my son with the inventory problem until he became hostile. He ran away and dropped a basket, of all things. When we do it will be linked from the Notes section of the main page. As information on Hearthfire content gets more organized, this kind of information should be added to the Child page in the Adoption section as well. Anyway, I've just added the limit to the main Hearthfire article for now. — ABCface 09:10, 9 September 2012 (EDT)

Goat Horns Impossible to Buy

I know the general merchants are supposed to have them in stock, but I come back DAY after DAY after DAY and they NEVER have any friggin goat horns. Sure, they all had plenty immediately after I installed the DLC (in quantities of 8-13, with similar results for glass and straw), but now that they've all been bought out and I need more, NONE OF THEM HAVE ANY. Every so often they might have 2 glass, and given a miracle maybe even 2 straw, but never have I ever seen a merchant restock ANY goat horns, EVER. This is ridiculous. Is nobody else having this problem? — Unsigned comment by 70.68.144.213 (talk) at 18:59 on 9 September 2012‎

I haven't experienced it personally, but you can go kill wild goats for their horns as a temporary solution. Children's clothes seem to get MUCH rarer after the initial stocking, too. I have to go to Radiant Raiment if I want to buy them clothing. It may be programmed that way for whatever reason. 24.61.29.45 18:22, 9 September 2012 (EDT)
