Enthir services?[edit]

I'm wondering if there are any limits or blocks on Enthir buying and selling, because I can't get him to do either. I didn't talk to him until after I'd become Archmage of the College of Winterhold, so that might be the cause; he always says "nothing illicit going on here, Archmage" when I run into him. --QuillanTalk 14:42, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm starting to think that when you become archmage he won't trade with you anymore. I loaded an old save from before I was archmage, and it took a couple tries, but I got him to open up the trade dialogue.
It's a shame since he's one of the very few places you can get daedra hearts. If I had know this before I became archmage I never would have done it. 24.33.141.151 03:26, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
I can still trade with him as Archmage. It might be a bug on my playthrough. I did trade with him BEFORE I'd become Archmage, if that makes a difference? I'm also a member of the Thieves Guild and have met him through there, but I can initiate trade with both the fence dialogue option as well as his usual two-part dialogue ("Can we do business" -> "Have you got the coin?" et cetera.) 50.41.146.125 22:37, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
I can trade with him as Archmage without being in the Thieves Guild. --67.183.151.247 02:10, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
I can still trade with as Archmage as well. He says "Nothing illicit going on here Archmage" but still allows me to trade afterwards. 90.194.36.19 17:45, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I think the not trading with him as archmage either needs to be removed, or marked as a bug. I trade with him fine, so long as he's in his room, as was the case before becoming archmage. 64.123.99.139 07:45, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
The problem was I never traded with him before I became archmage. Now the dialog option never comes up. He still says things like 'I've put together a list of contacts to get the rarest stuff', but even with him sitting in his room, the option never comes up. Darktangent 23:57, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Is there a console command to remove the archmage title from yourself, or some other way to trigger this dialog option? — Unsigned comment by Darktangent (talkcontribs) at 00:09 on 3 December 2011 (UTC)
He traded with me just fine after I did the staff quest, even after becoming Arch-Mage. --Mikeytalkemail 21:37, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Doesn't Buy/Sell Anything[edit]

The only conversation option is 'What's not allowed here?', and that doesn't lead to him buying/selling anything. — Unsigned comment by 24.33.141.151 (talk) at 03:00 on 25 November 2011 (UTC)

You need to buy from him at least one time before you become archmage, so he knows your cool. — Unsigned comment by 174.62.244.188 (talk) at 19:06 on 1 December 2011 (UTC)
If you're already the Archmage: complete the Thieves Guild quest Skyrim:Hard_Answers and he'll start trading with you. — Unsigned comment by Chris uvic (talkcontribs) at 19:57 on 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Maybe this works, but that's six quests into the thieves guild questline.. — Unsigned comment by 120.38.84.45 (talk) at 10:37 on 26 December 2011 (UTC)
I've done both, and he still won't trade with me. I just get the 'what can't we do here?' dialogue. — Unsigned comment by 90.195.63.79 (talk) at 15:44 on 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Enthir's Tome in the quest Hard Answers[edit]

After speaking with Enthir on the subject of Falmers in the quest Hard Answers in the Frozen Hearth in Winterhold, Enthir mentions that he has a tome on his table. I do not see a tome in either his room in the College of Winterhold nor do I see a tome relating to Falmers in the Frozen Hearth.

Enthir's comment: "Yes, I suppose you're right. Forgive me. I've lost several close friends to the Falmer and it tends to distort my view. If you wish to learn more about them, you're welcome to my tome on the subject. Should be on my table."— Unsigned comment by 98.228.252.64 (talk) at 05:52 on 10 December 2011 (UTC)

found the tome. The tome is found in the cellar of the Frozen Hearth, which you can enter from behind where the NPC usually stands that gives the rooms. Found on a table in this cellar. — Unsigned comment by 98.228.252.64 (talk) at 07:17 on 10 December 2011 (UTC)
but that book Lore:The Falmer: A Study, you don't have permission to take. so if that is indeed the book he's talking about, there must be some disposition bug. probably since it's in the cellar, it doesn't count as beloning to Enthir. 73.149.99.204 04:08, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Not restocking his ingridients?![edit]

So I bought up the two Daedra hearts he had when I found him in his room at the college. Waited 48 hours and rebought the 2 more he had after restocking. Then I needed 1 more, so I returned to him, spent ages looking for him before finding him in the inn only he didn't have any ingridients, just a load of lockpicks and some other random stuff. So I waited 2 days, no change, 2 more days, no change, 2 more days, no change etc etc. He also refuses to leave the inn no matter how long I wait. The daedra heart that respawns in the companions HQ isn't respawning for me anymore, despite the fact that it has dozens of times before. Babette in the Dark Brotherhood also doesn't sell them as she does on some people's games, I even tried buying up all her ingridients then waiting 2 days multiple times with no luck. Oh and the 4 deadra at Mehrunes shrine only ever respawned for me once, despite the fact the loot inside always does. I only need one more to make a bow, I finally go the perk to put 2 enchantments on 1 item so I'm having to remake all my stuff to put any extra enchant on it. --Lyco499 (talk) 06:05, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

If you re-enter the Musuem, to go back for extra dwemer stuff or for the Stone, you will reobtain the quest Hard Questions. Setstage TG06 200 to fix it. He started selling ingredients to me again after that. — Unsigned comment by 69.255.137.242 (talk) at 07:32 on 11 December 2011
I can confirm the above, I went back to the museum and activated the falmer language tablet. Then went back to Winterhold Inn and spoke with Enthir and Karliah was with him. After that, I went back to the Mage's College. Enthir's room was in the Hall of Attainment (the room with the lute on the floor). I waited 2 days and he was back in his room and began selling Daedra Hearts and spell books again. He was also restocking the hearts every 2 days. — Unsigned comment by 198.163.55.70 (talk) at 21:52 on 22 February 2012

Looking through the slats of a broken fence[edit]

I'd increased all of my fences to 4000g, including Enthir, but at some point after that, his gold has reset back down to 500g. I don't think it was caused by the previous bug, as he still sells ingredients, and will buy anything when he's in his room. It might have been upgrading to patch 1.3 . If anyone has more info on how this happened or how to fix it, please say. If I fix it, myself, I'll append the console commands that I used to do it. BTW, AFAIK, he's the only fence that wont buy/sell wherever and whenever it is. NFR 18:32, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

I have the same. He is not in Frozen Hearth anymore, but in the College. This has happened to me after I had to go back to Calcelmo's Museum a second time to collect the Stone of Barenziah there (the only one I miseed, and it was this bugged one...) and the Hard Answers quest restarted. I had to complete that quest by console commands. I'm almost certain this caused this to Enthir. — Unsigned comment by 85.66.211.226 (talk) at 21:13 on 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I never redid Hard Answers, and he went back to his room after that part of the Thieves Guild questline like he's supposed to. He has exactly what he had originally, and I'm not sure at what point that happened. I think it might be patches. I didn't have any until I brought my 360 to a friend's house just to get patches since I can't connect my 360 to the internet at my place, and I'm pretty sure I noticed this annoyance sometime after I got updated all the way to patch 1.6 something.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 08:27, 17 December 2012 (GMT)

Enthir won't leave the inn[edit]

I went thru a problem where Enthir wouldnt leave the inn, even if I had completed the thieves guild questline, and I was far from being the archmage yet. The problem is that if he doesn't leave the inn and goes back to college, he will never sell you the precious daedra hearts stock. Well after a lot of research I found a considerable number of players with the same problem, and I found something that kind of solves the problem:

  1. Go to the second floor of Hall of Attainment, where Enthir is supposed to be.
  2. Open the console with ~.
  3. Type prid 0001C1AA (press enter).
  4. Type moveto player (press enter).
  5. Close console with ~ again, and Enthir should pop beside you.
  6. Enthir will complain about some stuff, and you keep following him and press E to talk to him, he will finally open the dialogue so u can buy daedras from him.

The bad side is that he will start walking back to the inn, good side is that whenever you need him, you can follow these steps to make him pop and then you can temporarily talk to him.

I used these websites to find out Enthir npc code (It could be useful for other problems):

No fence status[edit]

He doesn't have the same amount of gold as the other fences and I had this the first time I ever traded with him. I never traded to him before Hard Answers but did join the college before. It appears to me that he never even had it although there was a long time between completing Hard Answers and trading with him I don't think it should matter. — Unsigned comment by 82.74.58.224 (talk) at 20:25 on 20 February 2012 (UTC)

The wiki page seems to indicate that this is a bug that occurs after both the Hard Answers quest is finished and Archmage status is achieved. However I had this bug happen to me after finishing the Hard Answers quest and without Archmage status (and I only completed Hard Answers once). He has two dialogue options for buying/selling, but he won't buy stolen items and he doesn't have as much gold as other fences. I think this character may just be very buggy. Sorachan 03:21, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Agreed Sorachan I would say that Enthir's fence script is bugged. I have had him buy stolen items before leaving the basement of the inn but only then. When I came back he wouldn't buy them and had the same amount of gold he always has. Lord EydvarTalk 03:24, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
After Hard Answers and upgrading the Thieves guild completely,I successfully got him to fence some stolen goods, but he happened to be in the courtyard at the time. Later, I tracked him down in his room and his gold had reset to the 500 that he had before he became a fence. I tried both dialogue options but both opened up his regular vend screen, couldn't sell him stolen goods. I tried waiting around to see if I could catch him outside his room again but he never seems to leave anymore. Or do anything besides stand in the same spot in his room. Doesn't sleep or anything. Definitely recall him up being fairly active before I finished Mage Questline so perhaps finishing that broke his fence status? UPDATE: I punched him a few times to make him angry, and then ran outside. I quickly surrendered and talked to him again- Lo and behold, he had magically regained his 4000 gold and was willing to do business. However, he quickly went back to being a shut-in after the transaction. So, he's still a fence, he just won't fence inside the Hall of Attainment and he never goes outside unless you provoke him. Ugh. --67.174.246.172 18:58, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
This reminds me of how Adrianne seems to work. She has one inventory when you catch her outside, but suddenly adopts her husband's inventory when she goes inside the shop. I wonder if Enthir and Adrianne both have multiple merchant chests or something, and which one they're linked to is dependent on what area they're in.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 08:35, 17 December 2012 (GMT)
In my game, Enthir only acts as a fence outside of the Hall of Attainment. He fences goods in both the courtyard & inside the Hall of the Elements. Whilst in the HoA, he only sells his "regular" items.--149.160.118.51 00:23, 2 April 2014 (GMT)

Archmage Bonus[edit]

I haven't tested it, but from the CK it looks like you should get a 10% discount (on buying, and 10% bonus on selling) once you become Archmage. He's still by far the worst deal in the game, since he has a 40% surcharge to begin with, but both of those adjustments should probably be noted on the page if/when confirmed. Aliana 23:23, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Is he the only person with a surcharge? The wiki doesn't mention pricing disparities between merchants. Also, I could be wrong, but he seems to buy stolen goods before I did w/e his quest was or join the Thieves guild. 4tran (talk) 01:21, 14 February 2014 (GMT)
There are definitely differences in prices between merchants for the same items. I have seen many different prices for the same thing. Aliana is right, he's the most over-priced merchant I've run across so far.. --71.94.53.49 11:11, 8 October 2014 (GMT)

illegal goods[edit]

Are Enthir's non-fence services illegal? SFK363 16:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

It doesn't count as crime to trade with him, if that's what you mean. ABCface 16:22, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Bug with prices[edit]

Enthir says he gives a "special rate" to Thieves Guild members, which I assume is 10%. I am also wearing the TG hood and Zenithar amulet for 10% better prices each. I have the blessing of zenithar for another 10%, and I've taken the first speech perk for yet another 10%. My speech is at 45. 'He is charging me 602 gold for a Daedra heart!' What the hell? I have 60% better prices and that's still over twice the base value. What gives?

I checked with other vendors, too. For example, Belethor will pay me 270 gold for the Zenithar amulet (53%), while Enthir only pays 162 gold (32%). Something is definitely wrong. Dbbolton 09:04, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

All merchants charge more gold for items than their base value and pay less than the base value. What's your disposition with Enthir, and what is it with Belethor? Did you raise your Speechcraft in between speaking with them?
Check out the formula here and see if it matches with what you've got. Also, in searching the internet, I found that merchants sell at three times the base value and buy at a third of the value, which I'm pretty sure is correct (I did mess about with merchant prices in trying to mod, so if my memory's correct then this is right). Vely►Talk►Email 20:42, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I can confirm that his prices are a little strange. He seems to simply not take speech skill into account, but I haven't researched this enough to find out exactly. Effects like the Amulet of Dibella affect his prices, if I remember correctly Chraxia 00:24, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
From what I have observed, the prices at which he will sell items are the same as with other merchants, but he will not pay nearly as much as other merchants for items that are sold to him. For example, he will pay me 88 gold for a Potion of Extreme Stamina (only about 59% of its actual value), but other male merchants will pay me 133 gold (about 89% of its actual value). The guy's a jerk. username12345 16:21, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Trinity Restored?[edit]

Why is it mentioned as Enthir being involved in this quest. He has nothing to do with it. I will remove it, someone can change it back if I am wrong — Unsigned comment by Mr.Argonian (talkcontribs) at 07:06 on 25 August 2012 (UTC)

No option for dialogue whatsoever?[edit]

Having completed both Thieves Guild and College of Winterhold main quests without any other Enthir-bugs I can recall, Enthir has no dialogue prompt whatsoever. This is making Onmund's Request, Arniel's Endeavor and other sidequests awfully difficult without console commands.

I've made sure I'm in the Thieves Guild's good graces and don't think any other quests are in the way. Has anybody else experience an Enthir bug of this magnitude? This goes well beyond being stuck at the Inn, not replenishing his wares or not having fence status. He just won't let me initiate conversation at all. Just to clarify, he's not stuck in "This person is busy" mode or anything. He has no prompt to press 'E' to talk or anything, though he DOES have chit-chat of his own when you come near. I CAN still pickpocket him and punch him until he goes hostile, and he still has his own idle dialog. I just can't initiate conversation.

Any thoughts? I find it hard to believe I've found something new and uniquely wrong with Enthir when so many other bugs are so well documented.

I too have this same problem. Is there a solution for PC users? — Unsigned comment by 68.44.23.176 (talk) at 21:29 on 25 April 2014 (GMT)

Not giving coin?[edit]

Okay, so when I sell stuff to Enthir he doesn't give me any coin in return even though the costs are as they should be. I lost 40,000 to him before I had realized it. I've almost completed the Thieves Guild quests and am Arch Mage. What gives? — Unsigned comment by 172.7.4.28 (talk) at 14:31 on 28 August 2013

Did you ever trade with him before becoming Arch-mage? — ABCface 14:55, 28 August 2013 (GMT)
I believe so. Would there be any way to fix it without console commands, since I'm on Xbox? — Unsigned comment by 172.7.4.28 (talk) at 17:23 on 28 August 2013 (GMT)
Did you do anything to build up his gold beyond the 8-bit amount that breaks merchants gold? A possible fix is to attack him and reload, no guarantee though. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:35, 28 August 2013 (GMT)

This is going to be bad for business...[edit]

To alleviate possible frustration, perhaps a note could be added here regarding Enthir's unwillingness to talk should the Magnus quests be active? I realize that this notation exists on the Hard Answers quest page, but some (such as myself) may look to the character's page first. Just a thought... BlackSun (talk) 00:21, 17 September 2013 (GMT)
