...prior to 'Before the Storm'[edit]

I've been playing through without pursuing the main quest for a while now. I've seen many places across Skyrim, and have noticed that the world is dragon-less (excepting the visit to Helgen by Alduin in the opening act). At each dragon lair I've visited there's the word wall (which will activate for you) and typically there is some other creature set, but *NO* dragon. Here at Dragontooth Crater it was a pair of Forsworn and a Hagraven. FYI. Something wicked 22:56, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I was under the impression that Dragons do not begin to appear until AFTER "Dragon Rising". Dragons began appearing for me in these locations after that.Ironmonger 18:40, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
You are correct. Dragons don't start appearing until after you've slain the first one, and reported back to the Jarl of Whiterun, thereby completing 'Dragon Rising'. Although, I have to wonder if it's possible to run around to all of the dragon lairs and obtain the Words of Power before completing that quest... that would mean you wouldn't have to fight dragons, but could still get the shouts. --Zmedaris 02:03, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
That's exactly what I've done. You don't get souls for them, though, until after you finish Dragon Rising.98.198.118.224 22:17, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Can you insert a image of dragon tooth crater before the dragons return. Chaoarren (talk) 19:54, 9 August 2013 (GMT)

Bug for Clipping[edit]

Debunked for Xbox360 players. Thanks Azure_King 07:54, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

What does this mean? Was it a hoax? Moving from article for now. Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 08:59, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Getting The Word Without Fighting The Dragon[edit]

I've been able to successfully acquire the word of power without ever having to even touch the dragon. I basically just sneak up behind it, cause it to 'half detect' me, hide behind a rock while it flies around in circles several times, and when it flies off (it always does, it either lands somewhere on the overhang or mountain, or flies off completely) I just get my word, loot the chest, and be on my way. Would this be something to include in the wiki page? --Zmedaris 23:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't think this is the sort of thing that would be likely to be included on the page. Learning words of power from word walls are entirely independent from killing dragons and/or getting dragon souls. This really isn't a significant variation on sneaking in any other situation. Dragon won't die[edit]

If you arrive at Dragontooh Crater, no matter where you are in the main quest or otherwise, and you fight the dragon, there is a bug where it will not die, even though you have battled it and the health bar went down, and another where Shadowmere may disappear. The solution to both problems is to leave on foot, either fast travel or just go to a different location. But when you return, Shadowmere will be standing there waiting for you and the dragon's body should be at the bottom of the tower. It will not catch fire and disappear until you approach it, at which point it will catch fire and you will receive the soul. — Unsigned comment by Darkmoonlover (talkcontribs) at 21:56 on 31 December 2011‎

this is not working for me, i went away and came back, and the dragon just had full life again and was STILL not attacking, flying or dying. i loaded a save to before i sneaked up on him and still the bug is there, does anyone have a solution to this bug yet? (the dragon not dying or flying or moving thingy, not the Shadowmere one, i don't have Shadowmere yet and haven't experienced the bug so don't know if this works or not for that bug) 84.13.21.44 16:26, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
it seems i've already got the word from this word wall, when i first went there i didn't find a dragon there or i got the word and escaped before it saw me/ i saw it (it wasn't sitting right in front of the word wall like it is this time). maybe that time counted as 'sneaking up on it' and now i can't get to a save from before that. i guess i'll just have to live with leaving an immortal dragon there. — Unsigned comment by 84.13.21.44 (talk) at 16:37 on 6 January 2012‎
Dragontooth Crater repopulates. Since it attains 'Cleared' status once you kill the Dragon, I think it'll take around 30 in-game days for this to happen. After that, the Dragon SHOULD be reset, and therefore no longer immortal. In fact, if you're much stronger upon returning after the dungeon repopulates, chances are it'll be a stronger dragon, too. --Zmedaris 19:42, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- My Two Experiences - I have seen this bug play out in two different scenarios (with the 1.5 update). In the first case the dragon at Dragontooth Crater was perviously killed during an earlier task. Fast-traveling to Dragontooth Crater after receiving the bounty note places you about 1/4 way up the approach path to the crater. You are immediatly attacked by two dragons. (Blood-dragon and Frost-dragon) The Blood-dragon is ealily killed normally, but then the Frost-dragon will not die. The Frost-dragon will not fall from the sky even after being hit with 'dragonrend' multiple times. Even after the health-bar on the Frost-dragon is exhaused, he continues to fly around your head, swooping down, but doing no damage to you. Multiple hits with dual-cast Thunderbolt simply cause his outline to flicker. When hit with dragonrend, the Frost-dragon takes on a glowing aura for approximately a minute, but does not land. After being hit with dragonrend, he will swoop by you with the quest-arrow clearly visible over his skull. After 15 minutes of smacking him and having him continue to fly around my head with no life, I attempted to fast-travel -- no use (enemy's nearby). Running to the nearest town (Karthwasten) and into the lake nearby finally allows the Frost-dragon to die. (at this point a reload before the battle was required as the horse [still very much alive when the run to Karthwasten began] was killed by something along the way).
In the second case, a reload and fast-travel to Dragontooth Crater again resulted in attack by two dragons. (Ancient-dragon and Blood-dragon) So the dragon did respawn, despite being killed during an earlier quest. This time the quest played out with no issue, both dragons were killed normally and the quest updated as it should for return and collection of the bounty. Based on these two limited experiences, it seems like the "dragon won't die" issue is realted to the quest when a Frost-dragon is the dragon to be killed. (Hope this helps) — Unsigned comment by Drankinatty (talkcontribs) at 20:19 on 18 September 2012‎
A WAY TO GET AROUND THE BUG: Kill it, use bend will so you can fast travel, and return. Repeat until you can kill the dragon. It works for me, I repeated the process twice, travelling to somewhere sufficiently far (Solitude). Good luck

Dragon Immortal/Stuck Bug Info[edit]

Just to organize things and an added bonus!
- The Bug - The dragon can get stuck after successfully sneaking while in combat with it or by sneaking up behind the dragon and touching it. It will clip through the ground, and may attack once or twice but will be overall unresponsive.
- On the Bright Side - It is possible to remove all of the health on the dragon but it will not die. This immortal dragon is still a viable target for spells and weapon attacks making it a handy way to power level this until you feel like really killing it.
- Finally Tired of It? - Once you are ready to do the job for real, just hop on your horse, trot a few stretches down the road until you hear the dragon roar, take off, and proceed to crash promptly to the earth. Now you can ride back up and claim your prize! Azure_King seems to say that this is not confirmable on the Xbox? Confirmed by me for the PC at least. Sulhir 09:01, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Also, the dragon left a nice long crater in the dirt after this, very nice. Sulhir 09:49, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
It's possible to kill the stuck dragon by depleting its health bar, then using a power attack at its head to trigger a "finishing move" (on 360). Worked after I hacked away at its head for quite a while. — Unsigned comment by 94.0.135.85 (talk) at 00:21 on 5 February 2012‎
Well my experience, just tried everything listed here for the second time, finally gave up and ran back to Karthwasten after hacking at him for ages, and as soon as I entered a building got the message to collect bounty from Raerek....fast traveled back to empty him. Map now showing cleared and able to fast travel, previously showing enemies nearby. Once back got the animation burning and absorbed soul. Finally!! Biffa. 90.202.87.61 00:13, 7 March 2013 (GMT)
Confirmed on Xbox360 - Entered Karthwasten Hall, received message, went back and the dragon yielded his soul. 75.63.60.248 21:48, 20 August 2014 (GMT)Steve

Dragon respawned for me[edit]

Sent to Dragontooth Crater by "Letter from a Friend"[edit]

Seems there's yet another radiant way to get sent to Dragontooth Crater. I received a Letter from a Friend by courier, which instructed me to go there. The text of the letter is this:

 "<Alias=Player>,
You caused a bit of stir in <Alias=Location> when you demonstrated the power of your Thu'um. Not everyone is anxious for the return of the Dragonborn.
I for one desire to see you grow and develop your talents. Skyrim needs a true hero these days.
You should turn your attention to <Alias=Dungeon>. I understand it holds a mysterious source of power that can only be unlocked by the Dragonborn.
   Sincerely,
   A Friend"

Perhaps this info can be added to the Related Quests section on this page.Evil-i 01:28, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

It's already covered by the Radiant Quest Note, which links to the list of radiant quests, which includes Shout - learn about word wall. --XyzzyTalk 04:05, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Unable to Clear[edit]

The article says this location is clearable, but upon arriving, there were two dragons and I kill them both. I went on to loot the chest, yet the location is not labeled as clear. I gave the area a good look around with detect life/dead and I am on the PS3. Any idea why this occurred?— Unsigned comment by 24.179.174.169 (talk) at 21:35 on 17 August 2012

The article used to contain a bug note about the location not always being marked as cleared. The user that removed it stated that leaving the area and returning later may fix this. You could try that. --XyzzyTalk 05:12, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Dragon Clipped into mountain.[edit]

after rapelling down the mountain carefully, instead of taking the long path around. The dragon took off as it detected me easily. it then flew around for a bit and "landed" atop the mountain above me. I thought it was attacking my death thralls so i waited a bit but nothing. similar to the sneak bug except full clip into the mountain tip. PS3 V1.08 Fennec--Fox (talk) 08:55, 21 March 2013 (GMT)

Shout bug[edit]

I've encountered a bug on the 360 where I'm unable to absorb the shout from the word wall--all I get is the singing and the typical static-like noise that accompanies the absorption, but no actual learning of the word. I've read that this also happens with the elemental fury word found at the Shrine of Meridia wall, but the "save & reload" fix prescribed there does not seem to work at Dragontooth crater.--149.160.118.50 01:23, 14 May 2013 (GMT)

hurray a comment NOT about the dragon!![edit]

Next to where the iron ore vein is, is a pool of water with a dead woman in, beside the pool is all her clothes neatly folded, a satchel, necklace and ring (both unenchanted, but probably leveled) and her journal which talks about her father not being happy if he caught her out here swimming again due to the forsworn. -Should this be noted here on this page or somewhere else?? Also how do I tag things like this as questions needing answers? Thanks Biffa (talk) 21:03, 11 October 2013 (GMT)

I for one think this should be noted on a page of interesting oddities--I'm sure we have one somewhere--if at all. Also, talk page comments are generally considered to be needing answers; the recent changes page shows fellow editors when a comment has been made. The 'question needing answer' template is used when a moderator decides that it is a worthwhile question that needs input from the community.
As an aside, we also request that your titles be relevant to their contents on talk pages--"Dead body nearby" would be a better title than "hurray a comment NOT about the dragon!!". Xolroc (talk) 21:08, 11 October 2013 (GMT)
Things like this are documented on Skyrim:Unmarked Places. Go ahead and add it there, following the established format. --Xyzzy Talk 03:46, 12 October 2013 (GMT)

Dragon Not Respawning[edit]

I've been playing skyrim for like 3 years, and the dragon at dragontooth crater hasn't respawned at all, just I killed it one time and it just never came back. I have a blades quest which says "kill the dragon at dragontooth crater" well I can't because there is no dragon there! And there hasn't been for the past year. When I turn the quest on the marker is all the way to right of the map and off bounds, which mean the dragon isn't in skyrim. If anyone has a solution to this, please help me. — Unsigned comment by 80.3.12.161 (talk) at 13:04 on 9 May 2015 (GMT)
