Unexplored/Unknown Variables[edit]

  • Able to kill Cicero?
  • Exact consequences of helping or turning in Cicero after joining the DB
  • Persuasion skill check level on Vantus
  • Non-obvious alternate paths to completion. — Unsigned comment by Bwross (talkcontribs) at 09:27 on 15 November 2011
before i knew cicero was important i tried to steal his horse, he attacked me and i tried to kill him. You can't kill him, just goes unconcious (similar to how the important NPCs in oblivion do). i don't know if you can kill him after he gets back to the dark brotherhood or not, but you can't while he's on the side of the road. — Unsigned comment by 78.86.90.226 (talk) at 20:09 on 15 November 2011

Does anyone know where to start this quest? I mean to find the rumor about it and get stage 05? — Unsigned comment by 70.29.67.46 (talk) at 17:01 on 3 January 2012
You just run into him on the road near the Loreius Farm and he starts to complain to you about how wretched is his state. 174.6.51.17 06:04, 22 January 2014 (GMT)
The rumor works also, added a note for it. -- CompleCCity (talk) 22:35, 2 March 2014 (GMT)

Helped Cicero as a good character[edit]

I rolled a Goody-good character and killed about 4 Dark Brotherhood assassins who came after me. I then met Cicero on the road and helped him out. Since then, I have not been attacked by any more assassins, and I've put at least 40 more hours into this character. If anyone else can confirm this, I believe it is an interesting consequence for helping him out, you gain some degree of favor with the Night Mother and or the Dark Brotherhood. — Unsigned comment by 70.178.162.162 (talk) at 21:07 on 3 January 2012

I believe that's not the case with my gameplay occasion. Cicero was assisted but the Dark Brotherhood assassins were still coming... XtremeRampage 11:48, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Not a bug?[edit]

I removed this but it was readded.

Even after you've convinced Vantus to help, Cicero and his broken wagon may remain on the road indefinitely (unless you join or destroy the Dark Brotherhood, in which case he will move on regardless of whether you convinced Vantus or not).

This does not seem like a bug to me. Im sure he is suppose to stay there until you have joined the Dark Brotherhood or destroyed them. Cicero would have nowhere to go so what else is he suppose to do? — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 19:40, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

He goes to the Dawnstar Sanctuary first. That was where he was before he ever came to Falkreath as revealed in his final journal. He doesn't leave from there until he finally comes to terms with the fact that he will never be Listener. He also maintains Dawnstar as his own personal sanctuary and I suspect that's where he is whenever he is not found at Falkreath after he has already shown up there. "We leave soon. But Cicero will keep this Sanctuary as his Sanctuary! A place to rest and ply my trade, for I once more take up the blade, and send some lucky souls to Him, when laughter strikes, as fits my whim!" Zentard — Unsigned comment by 71.62.80.126 (talk) at 12:13 on 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I know he goes to Dawnstar before Falkreath, however when you meet him he is heading south past Whiterun. This looks like he has already left Dawnstar when you meet him, but he cannot arrive at Falkreath before you do. So he stays there until you up to the part of the quest when he arrives. Thats why I think it is not a bug. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 00:02, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I did this quest lots of game hours ago, entered falkreath, but haven't completed enough for Cicero to arrive. He is not at the farm, but the guard is and he is essential. The Silencer 00:44, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

the problem i noticed is that when this happens, you cannot complete the quest. it sits in your journal and talking to either NPC results in nothing happening, even several days later. seems like a bug. — Unsigned comment by 98.176.242.147 (talk) at 17:04 on 29 January 2012

Obviously this is nothing more than an example of the less than robust 'cause and effect' system in elder scrolls games, he does not ever have his wheel actually fixed and never goes anywhere as a result of this quest being completed, he will simply disappear and then appear in response to the other dark brotherhood questlines, as there is not supposed to be a realistic effect like the cart being fixed and him travelling onwards there is no bug I can see — Unsigned comment by 121.212.2.149 (talk) at 00:49 on 5 February 2012

Location?[edit]

"As you walk down the road near Loreius Farm" is kind of vague! Visiting the page on Vantus Loreius does not provide his location either King Mango

It's hard to provide a more precise description; for additional help, look at the quest image. --Krusty 22:38, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
The image doesn't help at all. The in game map starts skewed to one side. The location is north of whiterun, but people are looking for where to start walking from. It's the road to the east of whietrun that runs north. Can you put a link to the skyrim map on here as well. edit Its not clear where Lorieius Farm is. The Silencer 14:52, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
I've added a map link to the farm. But, no, I don't think people want to know where to start walking from. They want to know where they are going, and telling them to start walking from Whiterun doesn't help them at all. Furthermore, many people may not choose to start walking from Whiterun -- they'll fast travel to whichever discovered location is closest, which could be Whitewatch Tower or Blizzard Rest. --NepheleTalk 16:08, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I can't think of any non radiant quests that lets you discover anywhere closer than Honningbrew Meadary. The edit I did was inevitably wrong because I used my ingame map at the time (silly mistake). I have been to Whitewatch Tower, but have never seen Blizzard Rest. Dark Brotherhood Quest Statistic[edit]

Although the article says this quest increases the Side Quest statistic, I'm quite sure that my Dark Brotherhood Quest was incremented. Maybe this was changed with some patch. I finished the quest after version 1.4 and use PS3 system. I wish someone else could confirm because I'm having too many problems with statistics (Companion radiant quests don't enter anywhere). — Unsigned comment by 189.24.243.20 (talk)

On my file, on the 360, i have completed this quest but not joined the DB and my statistics still say 0 quests for the dark brotherhood. RIM 14:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Also on 360. Have done this quest twice and never joined DB. Both times I got an increase to my DB quest counter. All my other quest counters update accurately (Companions, Daedric, etc.). Not sure why this is, but it seems this is not the same for all players so I'm going to remove it. GrogGrogGrog 00:44, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
On 360. I can confirm that my Dark Brotherhood quest statistic updated after completing Delayed Burial--72.91.149.47 00:03, 2 June 2013 (GMT)Archmage Darium

I met Cicero very early in the game, at Level 5 (PC), when I had only completed two other quests: Unbound (of course) and Ill Met By Moonlight, Hircine's Daedric quest. However, at the end of Delayed Burial (I helped Cicero and was rewarded), the game credited me with four quests done: one main quest line (Unbound), one Daedric quest (Ill Met by Moonlight), one side quest, and one Dark Brotherhood quest. It seems that the game, at least on the PC as of this date, is counting Delayed Burial as both a side quest and a Dark Brotherhood quest. 174.6.51.17 06:27, 22 January 2014 (GMT)

Different Guard after Civil War Completion.[edit]

I'm not sure if this makes any real difference, but after completing the Civil War questline for the Imperials the guard patrolling nearby is replaced. Before he was a standard-looking Pale Hold guard, but now he wears an Imperial-style uniform (I thought he was a legionary until I looked close and he is called "Roadside Guard"); he is also voiced differently too. I suppose it makes sense, since it reflects the change in the governance of The Pale, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this? - Athelstan 18:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

This is true. Vely►t►e 23:09, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Sic tag?[edit]

I can't understand why a sic tag would be indicated here. I think they are to mark only quoted material. --JR (talk) 16:06, 18 January 2013 (GMT)

The one in the quest stages? Well that is a direct quote from the game data (and usually the entry you can see in your quest log) - see CSList . --Alfwyn (talk) 16:14, 18 January 2013 (GMT)
I think I wanted to ask this question about another article, and placed it here by accident. No question about the tag on this page. Thanks though! --JR (talk) 11:15, 19 January 2013 (GMT)

Stealing Cicero's horse crashes the game.[edit]

If you don't complete the quest in favor of Vantus Loreius, steal Cicero's horse and then try to ride away from Loreius Farm, the horse will vanish, leaving you riding in the air. The game will crash shortly afterwards. I have been able to confirm this to be true with several separate tests. --Blackpete (talk) 09:17, 6 April 2014 (GMT)

It still needs to be verified by other users for it to be marked as 'confirmed'. You cannot verify bugs that you add yourself. This is so we know it's a glitch across the board, not due to a disc error, mod, etc. •WoahBro►talk 09:48, 6 April 2014 (GMT)
Since I was in Riverwood on a new play-through and had just saved my game, I went ahead up north of Whiterun and did this quest. Talked to Loreius, reported Cicero to the guard, got my reward... then jumped on the horse, buggered off all the way to Rorikstead, and I called that plenty far enough to say "no repro." There are other factors at work here, and you need to work them out before it can be called a bug. I'll give this a few hours before deleting it, though, just in case someone can repro. Cdarklock (talk) 11:08, 6 April 2014 (GMT)
I have also stolen Cicero's horse with no ramifications, though I can't remember who I sided with in that quest. AN|L (talk) 11:22, 6 April 2014 (EDT)
This issue has been confirmed as a bug by the Unofficial Skyrim Patch project. I realize this does not necessarily categorize it as a bug by UESP standards, but here is a link to the issue, just in case it would be helpful: [1] --Blackpete (talk) 09:43, 7 April 2014 (GMT)

() I saw this and removed the bug before seeing the uskp link. I tested this on PS3 with patch 1.9 and could not replicate it, but now I realise I completed it in Cicero's favour, I'll try again. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 12:45, 7 April 2014 (GMT)

Tested again, reporting Cicero to the guard, and could not replicate it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:31, 7 April 2014 (GMT)
That's puzzling. Perhaps it is a problem caused by a change that the USKP made then, or perhaps it only occurs with the PC version of the game. --Blackpete (talk) 03:31, 8 April 2014 (GMT)
Do you have any other mods installed? It could be that as well. •WoahBro►talk 03:32, 8 April 2014 (GMT)
Yes, I have a few others (several of Arthmoor's mods: RFL, WVA, BOYD, and CRF), but nothing that makes any changes to that quest or the horse (as far as I know). It's kind of strange that nobody here has been able to reproduce the issue. --Blackpete (talk) 08:45, 8 April 2014 (GMT)
Sorry about the multiple posts, but I just realized something that "may" be important. The crash happened when I completed the quest in favor of Cicero (not Loreius). That was a mistake on my part when I originally posted this, I meant to write "If you don't complete the quest in favor of Vantus Loreius".... If someone still can't reproduce it this way, then I'll just assume that it is just my game. --Blackpete (talk) 10:01, 8 April 2014 (GMT)

Greatest Reward[edit]

Is there a way to get the greatest reward possible in this quest. Like in the quest 'In My Time of Need'. You can get the reward from both and loot there bodies afterwards. Is there any way to do something like that with this quest?

I attempted to tell Loreius to fix the wheel, then report Cicero to the guard however that failed and ended with Cicero's arrest. I also attempted to tell Cicero that Loreius agreed then report him to a guard, that also failed. — Unsigned comment by 82.0.27.121 (talk) at 15:38 on 31 May 2015

Value of required Speech skill?[edit]

I did some testing and it turns out it's nigh impossible to fail the speech check. With a Speech of 15 I was able to persuade Vantus quite easily. I even tried setting my skill to 10 and it still worked. However, I also have the perk that makes persuasion 30% easier, so I'm not sure of the exact requirement. Does anyone happen to know? Talk to the Jester Bug[edit]

There's a bug where the misc quest objective "Talk to the Jester" won't disappear (description on fandom's wiki). Basically, if you first speak to the farmer, this objective will be stuck forever.

Here's how I fixed it (note that I've already completed the Dark Brotherhood questline and kept Cicero alive)

1. Reset the quest to where it failed

resetquest db01misc

setstage db01misc 5

2. Now you need the correct version of Cicero so you can talk to him. 2 options here

2a. If you can access an early savegame, first make a new save, then load the old savegame and go meet Cicero at the wreckage. Note his RefID. Load your current save and summon back that missing jester with:

prid <RefID you found>

moveto player

enable

2b. If not, you have to spawn a new one. Type help Cicero and notice there are 3 classes. The correct BaseID should be in the middle (550F0 for me)

player.placeatme 550F0

3. Talk to that Cicero you got from 2a or 2b. That will clear the objective.

4. Complete the quest: setstage db01misc 200

5. Clean up. Select that new Cicero and: disable

Important: the real Cicero you had in your game will change its RefID in the process. He will still have the same dialogue and inventory as before but it's like he respawned. I've found mine exactly where he was (Dawnguard Sanctuary). I actually did the whole thing right in front of him and he changed ID without any visual change (no disappear/reappear). No consequences found so far but it's probably best to only do this when the Dark Brotherhood questline is complete.

Cicero and the dragon[edit]

Before doing the farm quest I was attacked by the local dragon and ran to Cicero for help. He seemed unaffected by dragon breath and did nothing to help. A bug? — Unsigned comment by 76.182.6.180 (talk) at 22:23 on 29 December 2022 (UTC)
