Article

Someone needs to make an actual article about skyrim childen here and not just redirect to the class list, as I anyway think there needs to be some actual info about children instead of just a cheap redirect to a class list that doesn't really tell you anything. — Unsigned comment by Rylasasin (talkcontribs) on 23 February 2012

You (or any other editor) is free to do so -- simply click "edit" on the article. That's the only way anything gets done on a wiki: an editor who thinks information needs to be added to the site has to do the work. --NepheleTalk 22:24, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

You can pretend a given child is yours I guess, but there is no way to either give birth to, or adopt, children in Skyrim. Be thankful they at least exist at all (though would be nice if children of ALL races existed, not just 4). There are orphanages in Skyrim but you can't adopt any of the orphans. Maybe in Elder Scrolls 6 they'll have children of all 10 races and let you give birth or adopt them, who knows. 67.161.147.136 00:51, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Parents

In the notes section, it says there are some kids with different race parents (Minette a Nord has an Imperial brother and father), I read somewhere here saying that the person's race depends on the mother (like that Orc from Oblivion with the orc mother and Imperial father). So maybe some of the kids could be half siblings and whatnot. Minette's father could have remarried a Nord and had Minette after having his son. --Sencilia 06:00, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

You're talking aboutLore:Notes on Racial Phylogeny. I think that could still be interpreted to be simply "adoption", since remarriages would still involve a child having a step-parent. Someone would still be "adopting" a child as their own. For the sake of simplicity, I would prefer just to leave it the way it is. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 06:06, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Killing children on the Workshop

The article currently says that such mods are not accepted on the Workshop, but there is one such mod. Should we change our description? Or have they just not gotten around to removing that mod yet? Vely►Talk►Email 14:38, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

There is another mod on skyrimnexus that,among other things makes children killable.See the screen shots if you want proof.Try typing in playable Greybeard robes as that is one of the features.--Skyrimplayer 16:10, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

It was removed by the author, not removed based on violating certain issues. This mod and this mod, which have been up for a while, both make children killable. Vely►t►e 16:36, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Vinnius's improper race

Ok, I accidently hit the enter button before I could complete the explanation for my edit, so here's the full explanation:

Minette Vinius's race is proper. According to the book Racial Phylogeny (available in this very game), it states that children are the race of their mother, not their father (kind of like Native Americans). Since Minette has a Nord mother, he is a Nord, himself.70.178.75.207 05:50, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Maybe this is just me being slow, but how do you know that Minette's mother is a Nord? I can't find any mention of her in the CSList. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 09:31, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
I think we need some checking of relations here. Minette Vinius's page says Corpulus is her father, but Corpulus's page says they're siblings, while all pages mark Sorex as Corpulus's son. Minette calls Faida 'auntie' and the game files call Faida a cousin to Corpulus. The wiki has no mention of her mother at the moment, but you could check the dialogue of all those people. Appearance, again

Ok, try this again - the old one got deleted for allegedly being a "forum like post", I dont wanna argue, I'm smarter than that. So I repeat: the Children use generic Faces, they ALL look alike. This is definetly noteworty, but again, I'm not gonna argue why or how. It just is, because all...the...children...look...alike. And that's noteworthy enough. Adoption

Here is some info about preparing existing houses for adoption. I will not add it to the main page yet because it will look weird on its own. Jarl's steward will offer a new decorating option. (I did not get prices, but once those are in hand the options can also be added to the specific house pages.)
  • Breezehome: Turn Alchemy Lab into Child Room
  • Hjerim: Add Child Room (redesign near secret room, with minor storage loss)
  • Honeyside: Turn Enchanting Lab into Child Room
  • Proudspire Manor: Add Child Room (reportedly entirely new room, minimal disruption)
  • Vlindrel Hall: Turn Alchemy Lab into Child Room

Since there still seems be confusion about this, maybe somebody more wiki-savvy than me could find a place to include the details of what you need to adopt children in a player-built home: In the main hall, you just need to purchase the single bed(s) and dresser. Many people assume you need to build the bedroom wing, but this is not the case. If you do build the bedroom wing, you need the child's bed(s) and child's chest(s) in order for them to move into that room. Icedus (talk) 11:39, 16 September 2012 (GMT)
Right now, the only thing about this on the article is "Children can only be adopted if you have a child's bed and container in your house." The "Bedrooms" addition is just confusing period if you ask me, since the very fact that it exists strongly suggests that you must have it in order to move your adopted kids to a homestead. In reality, well, at least in my experience, it just makes everything with your kids and spouses confusing. Even your House Carl/Stewards get confused (and in a way that makes zero sense...you sleep in whatever bed you can before kids move in, then you turn into a creepy weirdo that just never sleeps and just stares at everybody...but then when there is an extra double bed and two unused beds in the main hall, do ya use them? No...THAT WOULD BE CRAZY PERSON BEHAVIOR! It'll be 3 AM and your kids will be sleeping in the kid's beds, your SPOUSE WILL BE in the double across from them, and your HC/Steward will be banging the anvil for no reason!
I've played around with this add on quite a bit, replayed or redid lots of it (e.g. adopting different kids, from the orphanage or directly after something happens to their parents etc), went back to old saves to try different things, and experimented with the "carrot and stick" thing re how you treat your kids to see if you if how you treat them even makes a difference. I feel like I've figured some stuff about how the DLC works, but the one thing I know for CERTAIN is that the bedrooms wing is just a nightmare, especially if your PC is married.--Timfever (talk) 03:51, 23 October 2012 (GMT)

Orphans

I looked through as many articles as I was willing to but I didn't find any mention of this. In Riverwood, Dorthe's parents were both killed (I've got no idea how or why, as I fast-traveled to Riverwood and they were lying in the streets, dead, even though they were alive the last time I was in town). She was transported to Honorhall to live with the other orphans, and I noticed there were way more orphans in Honorhall than there were previously (likely because of their parents being killed). Why isn't it mentioned anywhere than children who become orphaned end up in Honorhall? It seems like a pretty big oversight. 72.23.241.65 20:10, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

I've got Hearthfire, yes. I'd never noticed it before, as I never had any reason to ever visit Honorhall again. Perhaps it's not in the vanilla game. If that's the case, then this new feature is pretty dang interesting. 72.23.241.65 20:16, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

Naked children

One user reported in another discussion that giving their adopted child another item of clothing as a gift reset the problem for them, so it might be worth trying that. — ABCface 02:35, 28 October 2012 (GMT)
Either that, or select them and type "resetinventory" in the console. Assuming, of course, that you're on PC. And Alphabetface's suggestion works too, giving your child clothing will make them change into the new clothing. VycDarkshadow (talk) 04:40, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
When Sophie had this bug, giving her single items of clothing was no good (she didn't wear them), but she finally got dressed again when I gave her five dresses all at once. 12:53, 31 December 2012 (GMT)

About the "Stretching"

Giving gifts to your adopted child

Is there a list somewhere in the wiki for acceptable items you can give your child? The only things i've been able to give are gender-appropriate clothing, and dolls for girls and wooden swords for boys. I'm sure they'll accept more items (and obviously not alcohol or real weapons), but have been unsuccessful in my attempts to obtain this information. Some children at least will accept real weapons. Sophie not only accepts daggers but thanks you very enthusiastically and will rush into the basement and start stabbing the child's target dummy if you have one. Kolb & the Dragon can be given to children, at least to Sophie and Lucia.

What children can you adopt?

I was wondering what children you can adopt. Do all orphans that are created during gameplay go to Honorhall Orphanage? Can all possible orphans at the orphanage be adopted? If the parents are dead but the children still have living relatives that they live with, do they go to the orphanage? If so, then any child without an essential parent can be adopted, and either way I'd like to have a list. TorchicBlaziken (talk) 23:06, 26 November 2012 (GMT)

Yes, all of the children orphaned in the game will go to Honorhall Orphanage. They can be adopted there. Also, all of the children with (HG) are adoptable.--Br3admax (talk) 23:13, 26 November 2012 (GMT)
We definitely do need a list somewhere (and/or a parameter in the {{NPC Summary}} template), so I've marked this as a good question with the hopes that someone can come along and help with this info. Unfortunately, other than children who start at the Honorhall Orphanage and the HF children, UESP doesn't have this information documented. I have seen much more details on this in various forums and another wiki, but the information needs to be tested rather than copied. — ABCface 23:53, 26 November 2012 (GMT)
I've updated the chart to include this information, but a lot of it is guesswork right now, will need to be confirmed in-game. Some are obvious - Honorhall orphans and homeless kids added by HF, obviously yes. Babette, Helgi's Ghost, Little Pelagius and the sybil of Dibella, obviously no. The rest are unknown. I assumed children of essential NPCs (mostly Jarls) were not adoptable. Also not sure Bottar and Sond, who have no known parents in the game, so are unlikely to ever be considered orphaned, since there's no adults connected to them that might die and trigger the script that sends them to Honorhall. So, I went on a Skyrim-wide parent killing-spree in order to determine who can be adopted. (I just used the "kill" command in the console, I'm not made of stone...) I confirmed a bunch of them, but couldn't get them all. In some cases, the parents refused to die, even though they're not listed as "Essential". I'm wondering if just being "Protected" is enough. This was the case for Kerah and Froki Whetted-Blade at least. I also couldn't kill Azzada Lylvieve for some reason, even though he's not essential or protected. Possibly because he was busy chopping wood at the time? No idea. The Haafingar guards still want me for killing the Emperor's decoy for the Dark Brotherhood way back when, so I can't spend too much time in that region. (Didn't go near Solitude, may need a new save for that.) Anyhow, what I'm wondering now is if maybe some of these children are taken in by other relatives if their parents are killed. I suspect that may be the case for Lars Battle-Born, as he's got quite an extended family in Whiterun. Anyhow, it's at least confirmation that some children become adoptable when their parents die. () Okay, so I did this again in a more organized fashion - using prid and moveto player before killing them. (My house looks like a blood-bath now - I didn't save it though.) This time I had no problem with Azzada Lylvieve, but Michel wouldn't appear when I did the moveto, so Clinton is still unconfirmed, but I'm leaning towards "no" on that one based on the difficulties I had. Beirand wouldn't die when I killed him, so I'm guessing Kayd can't be orphaned. Hrefna, Mila Valentia, Grimvar Cruel-Sea, and Lars Battle-Born didn't show up in the orphanage despite their parents' deaths, so I'm guessing they might not be able to either. But I was able to add four more to the confirmed list. It's worth noting that there are only 13 total beds in the orphanage (not counting Constance's), and 5 of them are taken by the children that are there from the beginning, so there may be a limit to how many kids can move there in the course of a game. Regarding Mila Valentia - I don't think she's adoptable once orphaned, because her mother's body never disappears. I've killed Carlotta Valentia a couple of times while doing the vampire quests (where you're 'disguised' as a member of the Dawnguard). The body just doesn't go away - even after I've not entered Whiterun for more than 30 days - and Mila never goes to Honorhall, just tells me that she hates me. Unfixable bug

So there is one listed bug that I am experiencing:

All children in the game may appear in just their underwear, and if giving your adopted children clothing, it will cause their torso to turn invisible.

Pets

Do particular children have a specific pet that they bring home? I've played through several games now, and a child bringing home a pet seems a fairly rare occurance. (I've only had one child bring a pet home in each game) - but certain children always seem to bring the same pet.

The ones I've seen:

Lucia - Fox
Samuel - Skeever
Gralnach - Mudcrab

I've also adopted Sophie, Blaise and Runa before, but they've never brought a pet back in my games.

I've adopted Runa and Sofie in my game (Xbox 360), and Runa has a pet fox as well. She had a pet long before I'd even adopted Sofie, who hasn't brought one home despite having taken her in ages ago. I've now looked at the Prima guide when I was at the store today. You can have up to one wild animal and one canine follower as a pet. Girls may bring home rabbits and foxes (both red and snow foxes); boys can bring home mudcrabs and skeevers (I don't remember seeing frostbite spider but I assume that too.) Over-encumbered children??

I cannot give any gift to Sofie. All items on my list are greyed out and selecting any of them gives the message that the item is too heavy for her to carry. I do not see any mention anywhere of this glitch. I've played through before with different characters with the same child adopted and had no problem, it just happened. Other people have had this issue with Sofie as well. Apparently, it's because she still has all her flower baskets from her "merchant" inventory from before you adopt her. If you are playing on PC, here's the fix listed on her page:
  • To fix this simply open the console and select her with the mouse, then use the command drop 000d955a 500 to force her to drop all the remaining baskets. They stack so only 1 basket will appear, with the total number after the name. If she does not drop any baskets after using this command, make sure the refID of your selected target is xx004031, as it is common to accidentally click the wrong asset when using click targeting.
If you are playing on Xbox, here's a fix another user reported as working for them (though you'd have to have an appropriate previous save for it to work)
  • To fix it, I reloaded a save from before I adopted her, did the dialogue option to buy her flowers, and bought all the flower baskets she had (like 250). Once I adopted her, I was then able to gift her things.

Lars and Mila = No?

Playing on the Xbox360, neither Lars nor Mila Valentina seem to be adoptable when orphaned, but Braith is. Is this simply a bug on my console? Neither Mila or Braith was moved to the orphanage. They just kept living in their parent's house. --AmrenFriend (talk) 05:30, 13 January 2013 (GMT)

Hmm. Well I've been testing more question marks, and I can confirm Svari, Clinton, Minette, Aeta, Hrefna, and Knud. But not Kayd, as Beirand seems to still be essential (Completed Stormcloak storyline). --AmrenFriend (talk) 10:35, 13 January 2013 (GMT)
My theory on Beirand now is that you can only kill him if you do his quest, for which you need to be on the Imperial side. (My first character was also a Stormcloak.) I've started a new character who will be doing the quest lines I didn't do with the first (basically just Imperials and Dawnguard - I chose the other side on both those lines the first time through.) And by then, Dragonborn should be out, so I can do that too. But it might be a while before I can test that. TheRealLurlock (talk) 03:00, 25 January 2013 (GMT)
