Possible Bug[edit]

On 11/11/11 I ran into a bug.

Started the game, got to Riverwood and got the quest from the Trader to go get the gold claw. While I was in Bleak Falls Barrow, I defeated the super zombie and got the Dragonstone. Later, I got to Whiterun and got the quest from the Jarl's wizard (Secret-Fire) to get the Dragonstone. Every time I talk to him, he tells me to go to Bleak Falls Barrow and get the Dragonstone. Ergo, I surmise that the quest is bugged.

On IRC a mod suggested I try defeating the dragon at the West Watchtower. I cannot find the quest for this. I spoke to the Jarl about sending reinforcements to Riverwood, and there are Whiterun soldiers in Riverwood, but I hear nothing about a dragon. I've poked around a few towers and towns, no dragon. You shouldn't be able to do the dragon thing until after you've done Bleak Falls, so there's nothing wrong there. I also went to Bleak Falls before the quest, and I was able to give the stone to the guy right away. Are you sure you actually picked it up though? And also, what system were you on, because it could be a system specific bug. Also, try leaving and reentering the cell and then try it again. That's all the advice I can give. --Halfstache 23:10, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Bleak Falls Barrow[edit]

I entered the barrow I get down to the gate and I try to use the lever and the gate wont open what the heck is going on??? I'm only level 2 do I need to be higher or something?? — Unsigned comment by 71.196.140.96 (talk) on 20 November 2011

You need to solve the symbol puzzle in that room as well. Check the Notes section in the article if you want to see the solution to it. There is no required level (for this quest). --Timenn-<talk> 10:34, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Jarl Vignar[edit]

Anyone know if it breaks the quest if you complete the Stormcloak quest to take Whiterun and replace Jarl Balgruuf with Vignar Gray-Mane? I'm assuming it does, but if anyone knows otherwise please post — Unsigned comment by 82.41.163.12 (talk) at 18:42 on 21 November 2011

You can't complete the civil war until after completing the Dragon Rising quest (the quest after this one in the main questline). The Jarl of Whiterun won't accept the message that starts the battle of Whiterun (attacking or defending) from the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks until after that quest is completed.69.214.46.27 01:47, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Unlootable Drougr Scourge Lord[edit]

i got this bug while playing through on a stealthy char, and i had already done a lot of stuff (it's a level 26 character) i didn't want to restart my game. instead i left the dungeon by the end, and re entered from the entrance, ran to the corpse and was able to loot the stone off him. if someone else who experiences the bug could confirm that this is a workaround or if i just got lucky it could be added to the article as a possible workaround. 81.157.128.85 22:29, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

It worked for me as well, you'll have to jump around a bit to get back, but it's possible. Annoying bug. 92.104.90.18 20:57, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
I went around the front to run back and was able to loot after experiencing this bug. — Unsigned comment by 72.226.36.11 (talk) at 08:04 on 17 January 2012

Dragonstone[edit]

Has anyone tried to translate the writing on the stone? I took a whack at it. "Here lies something forever something something power something Alduin something." I'm, uh, I'm better with Daedric. Daedalus Echelon 01:43, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Moved note.[edit]

  • You will see Delphine talking with Farengar when you get back, foreshadowing a later quest.

I really do not see how this is worth a mention on here. JackTurbo95 15:14, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

It is worth a mention to say that you will see Delphine here if you do the full quest. If you recover the Dragonstone while doing the quest for the trader in Riverwood (The Golden Claw) then you will not see Delphine after handing the Dragonstone to Farengar (as this is the first time you meet him and the first time he offers this quest). This may not be true if you exit and return to the Dragonreach interior cell after receiving the quest and before returning the Dragonstone (I haven't checked). - Havik 24.84.133.137 01:35, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Possible bug.[edit]

I found out that the Draugr boss can be killed so that he disappears into the stone pedestal under his coffin. This unfortunately makes it impossible to loot the body for the Dragonstone, and therefore makes it impossible to finish the quest. 80.220.194.223 02:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Quest reward[edit]

I think the reward for completing this quest is "Axe of Whiterun" and I am pretty sure that the title of Thane and the possibility of purchasing Breezehome come after the Dragon Rising quest. The rewards listed here on the quest pages are swaped.. Someone verify? — Unsigned comment by 78.80.19.42 (talk) at 22:18 on 28 January 2012

Nope. The Axe of Whiterun is the reward for Dragon Rising, as a symbol of your status as "Thane". — Unsigned comment by 24.206.88.41 (talk) at 19:14 on 14 March 2012

New here...[edit]

... but have used these pages for both Oblivion and now Skyrim. I'd like to contribute with pictures, since that is what I enjoy and try to do as well as I can. The forum section seemed rather... inactive, so I thought I'd post a link to a picture I think might be more suitable than the 'ready solution' for this article. I hope you won't find me to be too impertinent... [[1]] / — Unsigned comment by Titania (talkcontribs) at 13:35 on 4 February 2012

See the Help page for images, it's got lots of good info. I don't believe outside images are encouraged though, I think UESP prefers users to upload their own images from screenshots in-game. Alphabetface 04:11, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
It is my own private print screen on my own private blog, I guess what I was looking for before starting to edit the entry itself was a confirmation that yes, this picture would be better suited. Looking for a second opinion, so to speak. Titania 07:10, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I wasn't sure where the image was from, sorry. You can find a big list of pages that need images here:([[2]]) if you are interested in adding more images to the site in general. As for the images on this particular page, I think it's fine as is, but that's just a personal opinion. UESP is open to all editors to improve the site, so if you feel it needs improving, do your thing. :) Alphabetface 15:07, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Can't open the 'list of pages that need images', bad titleTitania

Thanks for getting that, I knew I didn't get it right but couldn't figure out why. Alphabetface 18:57, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Can't buy the house after the quest.[edit]

I'd just use the console to force it to start with some quest IDs, but I can't find anything helpful. Anyone know what the ID is for the house? -- Spades 98.229.36.30 22:45, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Help[edit]

I'm new to this and want to help but am not completely sure how. I decided to start with minor edits to this quest page, and after combing it and making a few changes that I believe improve the overall sound of the writing, I found that it was in a section that just needed a "final check" kind of thing to make it a complete page. I thought I was fairly thorough, but is that enough to make it ready as a full-fledged wiki page? If so, how do I indicate this? Am I even in the right place to ask this? Please help... --65.110.156.10 17:14, 8 July 2012 (UTC)notloggedineditor

OK, I now have an account and indicated that in the "no-include" part of the editing on this quest page. Does that mean that it is officially finished now, or do I have to do something else? — Unsigned comment by DragonFire (talkcontribs) at 17:30 on 8 July 2012

Ladder?[edit]

Sorry, I'm probably just blind, but I can't find the stupid ladder in the last room! It says to climb up the ladder and activate the handle. Which will elevate a wall for an alternative exit. I can't find the ladder anywhere in here!

It was a case of poor word selection, you should look for a staircase to the left of the word wall. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 07:11, 11 July 2013 (GMT)

Bugs Cleanup[edit]

  • The draugr bug that does not allow for recognition as a container applies to several other restless draugr between the first puzzle door and the second puzzle door in the temple, but does not affect your ability to complete the quest.
  • After killing the Wounded Frostbite Spider and cutting down Arvel, it is possible that the thick spider web, when cut, may leave an invisible barrier if you have not engaged in dialogue with Arvel.
  • If the Dragonstone is retrieved prior to talking to the Jarl, the option to give Farengar the stone may not appear.

These bugs have sat unconfirmed for long enough. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:01, 17 August 2013 (GMT)

Not looting Dragonstone immediately[edit]

Should there be a note or something about how the Dragonstone affects gameplay? After the player takes the Dragonstone, it's stuck in their inventory until they give it to Farengar. Once they complete the Bleak Falls Barrow quest, gameplay changes and the player will be subjected to random dragon attacks, posing the risk of killing some NPCs and preventing some quests from being given or completed. Adding a note would let the player know they can come back and loot the Dragonstone if they want to do some side quests before continuing the main quest, without the risk of random dragon attacks. —Lyra001 (talk) 10:30, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Actually, Dragon Rising is the quest that causes dragons to spawn. Lots of quest items end up stuck in your inventory, so it's not really notable. —Legoless (talk) 16:39, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Clarification about hidden chest in Bleak Falls Sanctum[edit]

There's a line in the main page under "Bleak Falls Sanctum" that basically says "Before going to the word wall, look behind it for a hidden treasure chest." I was on the steps up heading back towards Bleak Falls Barrow before I understand what that meant, as that is when I spotted the chest. You can see it just as you are about to exit west, if you take a step or two towards the brazier on the north. The chest is hidden by rocks right behind the word wall; it is easily accessed by jumping down the exit steps. Alternatively, you can hug the right-hand hall; the chest is in the north-west corner of the word-wall room. -- Emma Emma of Falkreath (talk) 21:07, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
