Potential Bug[edit]

There are Stormcloak soldiers that, for some reason, appear to be invulnerable. Seems to be fixable via reloading. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 22:26 on 23 November 2011

Battle for Whiterun?[edit]

When I did this quest it informed me the name was Battle for Whiterun instead of Defense of Whiterun. — Unsigned comment by Mackal (talkcontribs) at 09:29 on 24 November 2011

thats the stormcloak version (Eddie The Head 09:33, 24 November 2011 (UTC))
I realize that but at least in my game it appears that they have the same name, I could provide a screenshot when I get a chance to, note this is on the PC just in case it is different between systems or something Mackal 17:32, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
The page has been renamed from "Defense of Whiterun" to "Battle for Whiterun (Imperial)". The original name came from the official game guide, but the correct in-game name is "Battle for Whiterun". Since the Stormcloaks version of the quest has the same name, a disambiguation is necessary. --NepheleTalk 20:01, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
It has to be Battle for the Stormcloaks. Why would it be Defense when they're attacking the city? Oblivion nerd 18:25, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

note on followers[edit]

In the imperial version of the quest, I noticed that when you exit the city through the main door, you can not return, getting a message that you must aid the soldiers in the defense of Whiterun. This seems to prevent your follower from going through the door to accompany you, mine never followed me through.

Since you can not give them an order to exit the city, and fast travel is disallowed, I tried approaching the city door and dismissing my follower, he went through the door and I followed, recruiting him again on the other side. (likely requiring another free, for hirelings)

This also would of course probably not work for people who reside in Whiterun, like Lydia or Jenassa.

I think this should be added to the notes section, but I've never edited a wiki before. Anyone? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 23:06 on 9 December 2011

Good catch. I can confirm this was the same on my game, playing on a 360 console. Lydia can't seem to leave the city gates. Perhaps someone playing on PC can elaborate on this? I could add a brief note in the meantime.--Admos 21:16, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
I can confirm this same glitch on PS3. Followers won't go through the gate. — Unsigned comment by (talk) on 24 April 2012
Follower related -- my follower apparently got put in the Whiterun Dungeon (Along with Heimskr) for the battle. Yes, I realize Heimskr gets thrown in jail if you play for Imperials, I just found it amusing that my poor follower got stuck in the same cell. -- 14:42, 26 August 2013 (GMT)
Unless the player's character is very weak or unskilled, it may be a better idea to simply leave your Follower inside Whiterun during the battle. If you own Breezehome, you can have your Follower wait indoors, where they are completely separate from the battle by virtue of being inside a different cell. It gets around having to dismiss and then rehire your Follower. Simply pick them up again after the battle. Evil-i (talk) 04:58, 10 May 2015 (GMT)

town bug.[edit]

I finished the Imperial line, and waited out side the city, for about two game weeks (I was selling goods to someone in solitude.) well the city is still in the war stat it didn't reset to when before the battle. it's an inconvenience I can't get in all the houses, and some people just stay where they where during night. I was wondering if anyone has a solution that works for xbox.— Unsigned comment by John142 (talkcontribs) at 00:29 on 11 December 2011

Have you reported to General Tullius? The town should reset after you receive your new orders from him. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 23:46 on 17 February 2012
I have the same problem. I waited outside of Whiterun for ten days, but the city did not reset the debris from the battle. How do I fix it? Note: I play on the Xbox, so I don't have access to the console.--DarthWeezie 01:45, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm trying to defend the town, but for some reason the stormcloaks turn invisible. But only for me; they're targeted just fine by NPCs. Could this be related to my use of the master lightning spell to disintegrate the first wave of attackers? — Unsigned comment by Daedalus (talkcontribs) at 01:10 on 15 December 2011

Yes, I had the same thing happen. I used lightning storm for the first wave and after that almost all the stormcloaks were invisible, I re-loaded the save file and tried without using lightning storm and had no issues. On Xbox. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 05:29 on 30 September 2012

Consequences for failing 'mini-objectives'?[edit]

Does it make a difference if you fail any part of the quest such as 'defend the barricades' or 'defend the drawbridge' and still complete the quest? The reason why i'm asking is because this quest completed itself for me without me even killing an enemy. The 'mini-objectives' both failed but it still stated I completed the quest after the (% killed) stat reached zero. In case you're wondering, I didn't kill any enemies because I play on the ps3, my save file is at approximately 340 hours, 14 MB, and the game is like a bad slideshow for me at times (like during this battle). — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 13:46 on 18 January 2012

I can't comment on whether it affects the mission yet, but about your technical problem: Is there an option to clear the cache on PS3? Playing Oblivion on the 360, I remember being able to clear a cache of data that the console stored for the game. Perhaps there's something similar in this case? Google it, it may help you out.--Admos 21:19, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
I actually called Odahviing to come help me and he blew up the barricades so I failed that. But then I just defeated the enemies normally and as far as I could tell, there didn't seem to be any ill-effect. Although confirmation from people who did succeed at all the objectives may want to report back, maybe you get an item or something as a reward? Or extra dialogue? -- 20:20, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
I actually just completed this quest for the fourth time (all on separate characters). The first three times I failed the barricade objectives, and this last time I successfully completed all objectives. There were no differences whatsoever in anything that happened after the battle was complete, from what I could tell. Alphabetface 16:43, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

"Report to the Jarl Of Whiterun" Bug[edit]

It seems that when completing this quest if one reports to General Tulius BEFORE reporting to Balgruuf the Greater, the Misc. Quest Objective "Report to the Jarl of Whiterun" will appear in you're quest journal and Balgruuf will have a quest marker on him, but no dialogue to complete the objective. Multiple spawn points for Stormcloaks?[edit]

permanent damage[edit]

By the way, is there supposed to be permanent damage to Whiterun after finishing this one (e.g. broken-down arch at the Gildergreen, other bits of rubble hanging around), or is this a bug? 20:38, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

All cities that have battles take place at them end up with permanent damage, I believe. I've seen contradictory claims of this being true, but in my experience, the damage is permanent. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 20:50, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. And good idea to check for consistency with the others. 00:35, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Quest name and marker dissapears[edit]

After I won the battle of whiterun no wuest name appears. Instead of a quest name [...] appears and there is no quest marker anymore. Am I the only one to experience this bug? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 07:50 on 19 March 2012

Same thing has happened to me twice in a row now, no idea what causes it, but the umbrella quest proceeds just the same, only without the markers. 23:05, 18 June 2013 (GMT)
And after running through it several times, I finally found the problem. Turn out that the trigger that sets the quest name and etcetera is in the area the soldiers are standing in front of Balgruf when he addresses them after the victory. If you do what most people do (I.E. chase him up the ramp to talk to him because that's the next quest objective in "Battle for Whiterun"), you aren't standing in the area you need to be standing in for the quest to correctly update. The solution is to stand in among the soldiers and Rikke to watch Balgruf from the ground. Then the next quest, "Reunification of Skyrim", will correctly display instead of [...] 12:35, 8 June 2014 (GMT)
I'm having the same bug. Unfortunately, the quest is started the moment the battle is over, before I'm even back up the path to where Balgruf gives his speech. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 11:40 on 16 July 2014 (GMT)

CRash, crash, crash.[edit]

My SKyrim version is 1.4.7. I use a few mods, like WARZONES, Legion REquisition, Crimson Tide and the Vile ARt of Necromancy. On my ARgonian character, about 5 hours into the game, during the battle, I have to get outside and meet Legate, but whenever I activate the gates, it starts loading and CTDs with no errors. -- 20:14, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

(SOLUTION) I have had the same problem. After some experimentation, I find that if you go the the outer porch at the rear of Dragonsreach you can then fast travel to Chillfurrow Farm, which is a short run to the battle outside Whiterun. I tried numerous other destinations but the game either crashes, or the 'Battle for Whiterun' quest is automatically completed without a chance to play through it. Good luck! 14:16, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
There are reports on other forums that it's the WARZONES mod that are causing this problem. I had the same idea as the person above (teleport from the balcony) but the game crashes everytime I get near where that battle took place. I'm about to try to disable WARZONES and hopefully that will fix it. Apparently, you only have to disable it, go to the problem area, and you can re-enable the mod later. See here:

I'm running this right now, and, as I head for the city gates inside Whiterun, a group of villagers will appear in front of Warmaiden's, presumably to flee further into the city away from the gates. They are all stop and gather around Anoriath's corpse which is lying in front of the Drunken Huntsman, and I had previously killed him for the Dark Brotherhood quest. Is his corpse merely here because he's scripted to be part of this group of townspeople fleeing the gate and is just spawning dead here because I had previously killed him or is there supposed to be somebody spawning as a corpse here? Does anybody know if this is something that happens with other characters killed before the battle that spawn in this group at this particular point? — Unsigned comment by GrievousGrimalkin (talkcontribs) at 02:56 on 30 March 2012

There is no corpse scripted to appear in this location. Did he appear in a different place from where you killed him? --Morrolan (talk) 18:53, 27 March 2013 (GMT)
I had killed him in the Drunken Huntsman, I believe, and then looted his corpse. He appeared as an empty corpse (named Anoriath), outside on the ground just between Warmaiden's and Drunken Huntsman. I was simply curious if, if one doesn't do the Dark Brotherhood questline, would he appear alive as part of that scripted group of villagers fleeing the gate, and did he just appear there, dead, because he had been killed before that scene? It's been over a year since I did an Imperial run, so I don't quite recall who else was in that particular group of villagers. I'm currently working on an Imperial run, though, and can check and see if any other villagers, if killed before the siege, would appear dead there too. (I'm still playing the unpatched Xbox Version.) GrievousGrimalkin (talk) 05:14, 13 November 2013 (GMT)

Life as we knew it[edit]

Will all the civilians and guards eventually return to their normal behavior? 'Cause all they are doing now is to run around, even the shopkeepers. And if so, how long will it take? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 21:51 on 16 April 2012

It's supposed to return to normal as soon as this quest is over. I think it's a bug others have had as well (see the Stormcloaks version of this quest), and I've read somewhere (can't find where now, sorry) that completing the entireReunification of Skyrim group of quests will fix it. I'm not sure if it's right or not, but it's worth a try if no one else gives an answer. ABCface 23:18, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Completing Reunification of Skyrim will usually fix that so try that. --2dum2live 13:42, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Stormcloaks aren't hostile[edit]

I was doing this quest with a small band of followers (Vigilance, Cicero, my horse and Esbern) and the stormcloak soldiers are not hostile. What can I do? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 12:26 on 22 May 2012

Gate to Whiterun freezes game after the battle[edit]

The first two tries of this quest went flawlessly. Until I tried to enter Whiterun after the Jarl's speech to retrieve Lydia. The third time, I had invisible Stormcloaks, I killed many of my allies with Lightning storm sweep, and I interrupted the Jarl mid speech to complete the objective to talk to him, and then I ran inside before he finished. And the game didn't freeze! I hope the implication aren't very deep bug-wise, but I'll see soon.--Playerseekingbugs 19:42, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

This happened to me as well. It seems to happen if you wait for all of the soldiers to go through the gates before you do. It didn't freeze for me when I rushed in before everyone else after the Jarl's speech.-- 21:18, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Permanent damage[edit]

After talking to Tullius after the battle, MOST of Whiterun should return to normal only two house should be permanently damaged and inaccesible: Severio Pelagia is dead inside his 'destroyed' home, and Heimskr's house is destroyed, but he should be alive and ranting. Can anyone confirm another other bugs with the cleanup save it occasionally failing?--Playerseekingbugs 20:05, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

It's not supposed to be permanent? I've finished this quest alabout a dozen times, and it never changed afterward. Have you tried not entering the town for 10 days? Elakyn 09:35, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Sleeping glitch?[edit]

I hadn't slept in a while, so I went to nap for an hour in Breezehome when I was supposed to report to the barricade. I hadn't slept since killing Grelod the Kind, so this triggered the Dark Brotherhood questline -- and moved me to the Abandoned Shack. I got a "Finished: Battle for Whiterun" message, and then it seemed to continue as if I had successfully defended the city. I didn't play it through to see what would happen next. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 03:55 on 1 November 2012‎

Continued Bombardment[edit]

I successfully defended Whiterun and went on to completely finish the war questline, and I've moved on to other objectives. I've found, however, that several in-game weeks after the war ended, Whiterun is still being bombarded by enemy catapults. No one seems to notice or act any differently; they're not running or hiding as they do just before the war, they're just occasionally obscured by great gouts of flame. It doesn't affect game play in any way, but it's annoying and it makes me jump. Has anyone else run across this? If so, any idea how to stop it? Wordmama (talk) 18:29, 11 November 2012 (GMT)

I failed the objective Defend the Drawbridge, but never got any of the objectives following that (2060 - Defend the Exterior Gate, 2065 - Defend the First Barricade, 2070 - Defend the Second Barricade, or 2080 - Defend the Final Barricade). Is this a bug (I would have at least expected Defend the Exterior Gate), or are these objectives not actually relevant to this version of the quest CWSiegeObj? (In which case they should probably be removed, as it says "Only the objectives that are possibly relevant to this radiant version of the quest are shown".) For reference, the quest completed normally once all Stormcloaks were killed. --Enodoc (talk) 20:57, 14 November 2012 (GMT)

It could indeed be, that the objectives never appear. They were pulled out from the game data by a bot, and the unreasonable ones deleted. Hence the careful wording of the sentence. If we are sure that some of the objectives will never be given in that version, we should delete them. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:06, 14 November 2012 (GMT)
I've played this a few times now, and I always fail Defend the Drawbridge (on Master it's just not possible to kill all the Stormcloaks quickly enough). It always skips straight to Destroy Attackers. I'm updating the main page accordingly. --Morrolan (talk) 18:55, 27 March 2013 (GMT)

Dawnguard Glitch[edit]

Drawbridge stuck closed after Battle for Whiterun (Imperial)[edit]

As soon as Legate Rikke finished her speech, and the Stormcloaks appeared, I jumped off the wall and charged them. I used Overwhelming Force to blast the entire group back, and pushed them all the way across the road to and onto the farm land, where Rikke and I proceeded to kick the ever loving snot out of them, never letting them make it off the farm.

When I came back the drawbridge was up, but I went inside and spoke to Jarl Balgruuf to complete the quest. It never lowered. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this until several levels later, when I decided to walk to Whiterun instead of fast travel.

The drawbridge is still stuck up. I cannot operate the lever that lowers it. I can of course climb the wall, or fast travel into the city, but it's still annoying. Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone have any ideas how I can lower it without backtracking so far to an old save? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 00:39 on 24 February 2013‎

Fix: Open console. Click on drawbridge. Type in <Setopenstate 1> without the brackets. Next time you load the area, it will be lowered.

Bug that isn't mentioned yet?[edit]

So, I found a new bug today. If you do the logical thing after finishing Battle for Whiterun, and go into the city, it remains a war zone. There are barricades blocking both staircases from the Plains District to the Wind District. The citizens are running around in panic, and milling around the barricades because they're impassable. There is no way to access the upper parts of Whiterun or Dragonsreach without fast-travelling to Dragonsreach. Also, the giant catapults are still firing, and the Whiterun Guards are still saying "The Stormcloaks will be here any minute. Hurry inside and lock your doors".

If, on the other hand, you fast-travel somewhere else, then travel back to Whiterun (I simply fast-travelled to Heljarchen Hall and ran back), the city returns to "normal". It's still in its post-battle state, with certain destroyed houses, but the barricades are dismantled and people are back to their normal behaviour.

Apparently, it didn't occur to Anyone that the logical thing for a player character to do after a battle would be to go back into the city to rest!

I'm on Xbox 360. Can other people please confirm whether this bug occurs for them (it's easy enough to test - just follow everyone else into the city at the end of the battle), and if so, add it to the page. baratron (talk) 23:54, 6 August 2013 (GMT)

Confirming the above bug. Town is still at war initially but returns after fast travel. After experiencing a bug later on quest line I had to revert to an earlier save N start again. However after battle I am not able to fast travel anywhere. Very frustrating as my horse was distoryed in battle. — Unsigned comment by ‎ (talk) at 09:01 on 7 February 2014
I'm not sure that is really a bug, since one shouldn't expect a town to take time to dismantle barricades while chasing down any enemy stragglers; nor would said town "realistically"(I use the term loosely) be back to normal immediately after a battle. In any case, you can jump over the barricades, if you want to. Kellynne (talk) 16:51, 22 May 2014 (GMT)

People of dragonsreach being hostile[edit]

So i have found another nasty bug at this quest, Right after finishing the quest ive rushed at dragonsreach to report to the jarl not seeing that he is still outside the gates of the town , so i came to dragonsreach and after i saw the jarl wasn't there i have waited some hoers. The thing is that after the waiting time was over the jarl and the people from dragonsreach, except the guards start being hostile and attacking me without any reason, can someone confirm is this is an official bug or I am the only one having this bug — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 13:55 on 2 March 2014‎

The situation you are describing sounds like one described on the Dragonsreach page. If I'm understanding you correctly, this occurred after the quest was completed, so it wouldn't be relevant to this article, therefore the bug already listed on the linked page covers it. --Xyzzy Talk 05:42, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

jarl balgruf bug[edit]

When I defeated balgruf and his army he says I surrender i surrender and tells his guards to lay down their weapons. After this the game bugs and He will not complete his line. The new jarl stands stuck by the door. I have tried just Beating balgruf again but nothing. I loaded dragons reach once more but nothing. I tried after that to load from whiterun and kill ann the guards again but still same. Anyone help??— Unsigned comment by Speedbrake (talkcontribs) at 01:09 on 1 April 2014‎

Legate wont talk to me[edit]

after delivering the ax back to the jarl he tells you to talk to the legate but the legate wont tell me to go defend the city instead he just says the random NPC stuff and wont start the mission anyone know a fix for this— Unsigned comment by (talk) at 04:43 on 6 October 2014‎

Unfortunately, consoling to advance the quest may not solve the problem. Fast traveling, waiting outside, disabling/enabling the legate, killing/resurrecting him may not solve it. If you have a bounty in Whiterun, resetting it may help according to some people. This is a bug that many people have, but noone seems to have a solution for. Some people advice advancing/finishing the main quest solves it, but this is not verified.— Unsigned comment by (talk) at 16:14 on 4 March 2015‎
I jumped off the wall to the other side of the barricade. That seemed to jump start the next "Defend the Barricades" sequence. EDIT: I tried it again, and it would seem that the whole speech doesn't load. You wait a few seconds after she's gone silent, then jump over the wall (preferably the over the gap next to her). Not sure if that was intended by developers and not really a bug. Please remove comment if necessary. 11:41, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

All Stormcloaks are women, including generals[edit]

Funny thing I've never seen in my previous playthroughs: every Stormcloak attacking during the battle was a woman. Anyone else ever got that? I play a man and suspect a glitch related to the Agent of Dibella power, I unlocked it a bit before, in the same session. 22:42, 7 February 2015 (GMT)

Game CTD's when trying to save after this Quest (Imperial Side)[edit]

Well, after playing Skyrim for now over 150 hours and doing quite a LOT quest I tried to proceed in this questline. I got to where I bring back the Axe that Balgruuf gave me for Ulfric and he sent it back. Until now I never had a CTD when hitting the SAVE (not quicksave, normal save). But as soon as I finish this quest, something seems to be broken and I can't save it normaly anymore. I think quicksave still works (not sure, have to try it out again) but whenever I try to save the normal way the game CTDs. And as if that isn't enough, I can't enter Solitude. Whenever I try to enter solitude or fast travel there, the game again CTDs.

I really tried almost everything you can find while searching for CTD Solutions via Google and it seems this problem can't be fixed so far. Has anyone experienced this too or knows any solution to this problem? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 21:51 on 23 March 2015 (GMT)

EDIT: I think that I found a solution to this (after hours of experimenting). I think the CTD occurs only if you try to fast travel to Solitude or try to save the game BEFORE fast traveling away from whiterun and coming back so that the city can go back in it's normal "after the attack" state. I did that and now I can save the game normally again and I can go wherever I want without having CTDs. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 22:34 on 23 March 2015
