"She's hostile..."[edit]

She's hostile towards me upon first meeting her. Any one else have this problem or know the solution? — Unsigned comment by 96.254.179.54 (talk) at 18:20 on 17 December 2011

solution given on the discussion page of the quest "the black star" :
" Sometimes Aranea Ienith will be hostile when you first approach Azura's shrine. If this is the case, simply leave and return a few days later and you will be able to continue the quest as usual. --Krusty 15:23, 30 November 2011 (UTC) "

She is a good follower to have around. I am at level 42 and she makes my enemies die messily. Just be careful you don't kill her in the crossfire, unlike some followers she will get in front of you. Oshaugm 22:25, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
Upon encountering Aranea Ienith at the shrine, I noticed she was hostile (a reasonably common problem from what I've found). Rather than use the recommended problem solving method of waiting for a few days and returning, I attempted to resolve her hostility through the console. My knowledge of the console isn't exactly stellar, so it would be nice if someone with better skills than mine could look into this. I have attempted to add her to the player ally faction (addfac 0005A1A4 1) to clear hostility to no avail. I've also tried player.setrelationshiprank player <1-4> and setrelationshiprank player <1-4>. resetAI and recycleactor have failed to solve the issue as well. I've used every combination of these and stopcombat I can think of, but Aranea refuses to become friendly. If someone could look into this, it would be much appreciated. — Unsigned comment by 70.114.212.115 (talk) at 20:48 on 4 January 2012
This may be due to the fact that she is faction buddies with Winterhold. If you have a bounty on you from Winterhold, she'll be hostile. Clear the bounty and she's nice again.

Dress, weaponry[edit]

She has a definite tendency to arm herself with two-handed weapons such as greatswords and warhammers despite not being particularly skilled with them. She can still do a LOT of damage though, switching from magical attacks at long and medium range to melee weapons at short range.

If given a strongly enchanted helmet, she will equip it and stand there in the helmet and her underwear. One set of armor that she can easily be made to wear is the Thieves Guild armor, which also considerably increases her capacity as a pack horse. --174.6.51.17 05:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

This is standard follower behavior. They will equip whatever is the "best" weapon and armor (damage/armor rating) you give them regardless of their skill with said armor or weapon. Warhammers will always have the highest damage rating so all followers will tend to equip them if possible, regardless of whether it is wise. Since she starts with a robe, which has an armor rating of zero, any armor will be considered "better" and so she will equip it. She will also not equip any enchanted items that don't have an armor rating, like circlets, since their armor rating is not higher than her starting equipment, so I've removed the list on the page of enchanted items she will not equip. 71.178.115.32 00:02, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
This doesn't seem true for me (on the xbox). I just got her as a follower, and gave her some enchanted Orcish armor, and she won't put it on. I gave her some staffs (staves?), one quite powerful, and she won't equip those either, even when I take her dagger away. I'll give her any armor I come across as I continue to play, see if she equips any, but for now she's still running around in robes and a dagger... Obax 23:31, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
I finally gave her an ebony helmet and she put everything on as she's supposed to. Weird...Obax 03:43, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
I've seen this too. She has a "thing" for helmets. 174.6.51.17 12:08, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

() I've been able to solve this dress glitch with Aranea Ienith. Works everytime on the PS3 v.1.7. If Aranea Ienith is not wearing what you wish her to wear- First, equip her with the gear you want her to wear. Next, save your game indoors, not outside. Now, reload the game just saved. Once reloaded, you'll notice she's still wearing her default robes. Ignore this. Step outdoors with her, and she should now be equipped with the gear you had given her, provided they are an upgrade. I wonder if this works on other followers with similar bugs? — Unsigned comment by 69.209.220.206 (talk) at 20:16 on 3 September 2012‎

Has anyone ever seen her use a dagger if you equip her with one? — Unsigned comment by 69.209.201.103 (talk) at 15:12 on 16 September 2012‎

Potion Use[edit]

I tested her with potions and she does not seem to use health potions. On the other hand, she goes through magicka potions quite rapidly. Someone else should test this and then perhaps remove the advice on the main page to provide her with health potions if she really won't use them. --174.6.51.17 10:14, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

OK, tested this, gave her around 10 health potions and 10 magic potions and had her follow for several hours during which time she took damage while fighting and at least once fell to her knees from low health. All the magic potions were used, but none of the health potions. I plan to continue using her so I'll see what happens. 71.178.115.32 02:50, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

She is immortal?[edit]

I decided to get the Black Star version and I planned to kill and thrall the priestess restoring her potency as a good mage follower. I standed in front of and FusRoDah-ed her. It seemed that it killed her since an assault bounty was cleared but when I came to the corpse she resurrected completely. Thus it seems that she remains essential even after the quest.--89.23.179.43 03:06, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

This is odd, since she just died while accompanying me when we fast traveled to Mehrunes Dagon's shrine and got jumped. --174.6.51.17 10:10, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
After obtaining the Black Star, I killed Aranea to make her the first soul I trapped in it. She died just like any other non-essential character. — Unsigned comment by 206.183.9.98 (talk) at 14:00 on 9 March 2012
I meet her before Black Star quest. Danger enemy. "Killed" her 3 times in one battle and runned away before she resurrected again. Has no elixirs anymore. xD 217.118.81.37 17:20, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Successful kill after getting the black star. PS3 7.25.2015

aranea turning hostile after sucessfully completing her quest[edit]

I've completed the Azura Star quest (speaking to aranea, so I've got the Azura's star, not the Black Star), added her as a follower, made her join the blades, added her to PotentialMarriageFaction and married her to test some features for a mod I'm planning to do. But after playing a bit (without bugs), saving, restarting&loading the save she always only tells me to leave, as if I had got the black star. she still does follow&help in combat. what's going on there? some ugly script misusing the relationshiprank(player) to decide if I got the black star? — Unsigned comment by 91.12.90.47 (talk) at 19:13 on 23 February 2012

EDIT:
strange: i "fixed" that behaviour by attacking her until she starts combat (and officially leaves my faction), then running to any guard and paying the 40Septims bounty, then speaking to her again. but it seems I have to do that every time the game is restarted. --91.12.79.226 13:18, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Bow[edit]

Arenea has a bow and the arrows on her back but she don´t use it in combat. Is there any way to remove the bow and the arrows? — Unsigned comment by 93.133.76.156 (talk) at 12:32 on 25 February 2012

Glitch? with Aranea Ienith[edit]

I had a strange thing happen I have completed black star quite some time ago and kept Aranea Ienith as my follower ever since. Although She got in the way alot she was helpful not only for keeping some of my things but in fighting as well. Anyway I desieded to clear out a few misc quests. The first one I did was finding the flute thing for the bard collage. I got onto shadowmare and we fast travled to the cave. when i stepped down off shadowmare both shadow and Aranea just vanished. After grabing the flute i fast travled to the bard collage and completed the quest. Shadowmare showed back up but Arenea has not I even travled back to the temple but she is not there and I can use other followers. It would not be so bad but I lost some real nice stuff she was holding. IS this some kind of glitch? has it happend to anyone else?108.232.44.185 15:11, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Location.[edit]

She doesn't live in the Frozen hearth! She sleeps at the shrine of Azura. The people page lists her as living in the Frozen Hearth in Winterhold.--Skyrimplayer 15:39, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you're right. Thanks for pointing that out. ~ Psylocke 16:01, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
No problem!I'm just trying to help out.--Skyrimplayer 16:58, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Add her backstory?[edit]

Shouldn't somebody add Aranea's backstory on here? She does mention that she fled Morrowind when spoken to ingame. 173.69.57.154 05:27, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

letter from her[edit]

I got a letter from her saying. I know you killed him. I won't tell. Actually I want to thank you. He won't be missed. Any one else had this? — Unsigned comment by 80.229.105.206 (talk) at 14:05 on 26 March 2013

It's a random event, it can happen when the victim (the person you killed) has a bad relationship (<0) with someone, that person may send you a letter. I've checked the CK to see if she has any relationships, but the list is empty. Can you say who was killed? The name of the victim should be in the letter as well. I haven't checked any related quests to see if relationshiprank is effected somehow, I don't have time for that right now ~ Dwarfmp (talk) 23:27, 26 March 2013 (GMT)

Why is her last name consistently not capitalized?[edit]

Shouldn't all references to her name read 'Aranea Lenith' as is the custom (and the rule) in English and most other Western languages?

It's not like we're texting and are too lazy (or rushed, to be charitable) to hit the shift key... this is a Wiki!

I started to edit all her references on multiple pages, but thought I would leave this note first in case I have missed something essential, such as 'lenith is her profession, not last name' (ROFL). — Unsigned comment by 99.118.56.7 (talk) at 14:25 on 3 February 2014‎

Well, it's a capital "i", not a lowercase "L" ... --Alfwyn (talk) 14:56, 3 February 2014 (GMT)
