Dialogue Bug[edit]

My character sucked at sneaking, so I just slaughtered the vampire in full view of everyone and did my time in jail. When I returned to Dawnguard to speak to Isran, there was no dialogue option to progress in the quest. Anyone else have this problem? Any workaround? Should we include it in the article? — Unsigned comment by 74.182.46.220 (talk) at 02:38 on 4 August 2012

That doesn't sound like a bug; it sounds more like a failed quest. Based upon the writeup here, you either need to obtain his orders (the proof) to give to the Jarl allowing open killing of the adviser, or you have to kill him without being caught. You attacked and got caught, which was not discreet, and I think you'll find that quest marked as failed in your journal now.QuillanTalk 17:30, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

The Follower Did It[edit]

My Redguard is all about attack and defence. Not bad at sneaking, but terrible at pickpocketing. Not sure how it works with other followers, but I am stuck with Serana right now. Serana makes it difficult to do anything stealthy - you attack, she attacks. I had to go to Dawnstar for this quest and had succeeded in killing the Advisor with a poisoned, exploding dwarven bolt of fire (the Dwarven crossbow is, itself, fire enhanced) from the top landing across from the room with the Stormcloak general and the enchanter. No alarm, no cries of murder, no finger pointing, no bounty, one satisfied Isran. This quest came up again at Dawnstar and I tried the exact same thing - it failed. I was still hidden and the Advisor came out and he and Serana attacked each other. Serana won, the Jarl screamed murder, people gathered over the body, nothing after that. Talked to the guards, talked to Skald and got away clean. It seems that, as long as you cannot be seen in the area, your follower can can complete your mission without you catching the wrap. Possible Bounty Bug[edit]

Even though the Jarl says his guards "won't interfere" with your killing of the Advisor, I think they still do if you have a bounty in the hold beforehand. Schiffy (talk) 19:26, 2 December 2012 (GMT)

Self-completing? Completed by error?[edit]

Right after I finished the battle for Fort Greenwall, taking the Imperial side, I fast-traveled back to Solitude to report. As soon as I arrived there, I got the message that "A Jarl's Justice" had been completed. Problem is, I had never to my knowledge started the mission -- it was not in my journal and I'd never talked with anyone at Fort Dawnguard about it. Is it possible that the guilty party was eaten by a dragon or came to a sticky end some other way, and the game gave me the credit by mistake? 174.6.51.17 22:58, 21 March 2013 (GMT)

This exact scenario happened to me. I took Fort Greenwall, on the Imperial side, took the Riften carriage back to Solitude, and as I was walking up the ramp to Castle Dour, it said that I had completed "A Jarl's Justice," even though I did not have the quest. I don't know what it was about, either, but at least now we know that the circumstance was specific. Rewolf (talk) 09:21, 2 May 2013 (GMT)
I had something similar happen, but for me the quest self-completed after the battle for Fort Dunstad and I en route to Windhelm. Again, on the Imperial side. Shinymoogle (talk) 06:49, 9 January 2014 (GMT)
The Dawnguard-DLC "pre-loads" the faction side quest you get after the current one. It seems that your next quest would have been "A Jarl's Justice", and that this quest completes automaticly after a change of rulership. The devs just seem to have forgotten to check if it is the current quest..  ;-) This also should work (but requires testing) with Season Unending. -- SarthesArai Talk 20:37, 9 January 2014 (GMT)
Same story after taking for Dunstad and reporting back to Tulius. This looks confirmed for both sides of the Civil War and should probably be added to the main page as a known bug or at least a note.107.188.128.156 00:43, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Quest Unobtainable[edit]

(PS3 user) According to the article, "If you finished Season Unending, this quest will automatically be completed." Does this also mean the quest is unobtainable after Season Unending? Because apparently, it is. After over twenty attempts, Isran still won't offer the "Jarl's Justice" quest. Instead, he only directs my character to Gunmar (most of the time) or Florentius (occasionally). Both of them provide repeatable quests, which raises another question: if available, is "A Jarl's Justice" a one-time only quest? MrC (talk) 19:00, 14 April 2013 (GMT)

(Xbox360 user) It is a repeatable quest, however, the only two cities that I get sent to are Dawnstar and Riften. Maybe this has to do with the dialogue for this quest not being made for all Jarls (just a guess). I think you are correct about it not being offered after Season Unending is completed too. --Blackpete (talk) 04:39, 12 September 2013 (GMT)

Isran not talking to you[edit]

I did the quest perfectly, pickpocketing succesful and i killed him in the inn, but when i returned to isran i couldnt complete the quest, because no dialog appeared to complete it. any ideas? — Unsigned comment by 80.58.250.73 (talk) at 18:18 on 4 July 2015

Try "setstage DLC1RH07 255". — Unsigned comment by 84.205.14.54 (talk) at 10:38 on 15 July 2015

No Possible Way to Complete[edit]

In Winterhold there is no possible way to complete this quest. The adviser will never go into an area that he can be pickpocketed from. The advice about getting caught in front of NPC's is not valid because the guard will attempt arrest before the adviser can be killed. Whoman69 (talk) 01:49, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Partially true. Quest can be easily done while have high pickpocket and sneak skills(you can steal items even in plain sight), but what about other classes? I play non-sneaky warrior or mage? Vampire start hit you, but guard arrest you instead of killing vampire... Yeah, guard will arrest you and that's all. So I had to just kill vampire, pay 1000 gold fine and finish this sick quest.46.246.123.82 02:50, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

There is no vampire[edit]

Got the quest, went to Markarth, talked to the Jarl about him being in danger. Jarl says he'd need proof for such a serious accusation, but I get no quest update at that point and thus no "visiting advisor" is present anywhere in the hall. I am looking for a code fix for this.

Looks like Markarth is bugged in that way, since i got that quest too, and can not even find vampire anywhere, to just kill it already... --162.216.46.48 08:39, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
For me. yet another skyrim addict, i had the same issue if you type in the following code into the console the quest will be finished and you can continue with saving the world from those dammed vampire chickens.

I had similar problem - quest marker is present, but no Vampire. However, the Vampire spawned after I exited and reentered the cell. 89.222.164.176 03:17, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
For me i could not find the vampire anywhere, eventually found him in the jarls room (I believe that’s what it is) left of the throne. He is hidden in a corner by the table and I am spotted approaching him from any angle. My first thought was using console commands to kill him, loot the note off his corpse, resurrect him and finish the mission. Killing him completed the mission and told me to return to Isran. Obviously I wanted a little more than that since this was my first time with the Dawnguard, so I went to an earlier quick save and kept trying. I even tried to use the player.moveto command with no avail. I gave up for the night and am going to try to exit the building and reenter, the console command mentioned above that completely skips the quest, killing him with a bow from a longer range that keeps him from seeing me, and having Serena kill him. Bugs like this make my play through (heavy two-handed law abiding and overtly good) ridiculously difficult.

Any ideas where in mistveil keep is this vampire suppose to be?[edit]

Outside of Mistveil Keep the entrance has the arrow but once i get inside the vampire doesn't show up on the map at all which means no vampire in there. I don't know if this is a bug or if this is just one of those radiant quest where I half to search every nook and cranny like some quests on the game. — Unsigned comment by PrinceRetro (talkcontribs) at 00:25 on 1 August 2018‎

Never get this Quest[edit]

I´m level 53, i complete the Dawnguard Questline as an Vampire Hunter and i never become this Quest, i have done all other Quest and collect the 3 artifacts for Florentius. I dont know why im not able to become this Quest. — Unsigned comment by 188.100.137.87 (talk) at 10:57 on 12 January 2021 (UTC)

If you don't have the unofficial patch installed, this quest would only assign Riften or Dawnstar as targets. Just browsing through the quest conditions, I notice that there's a check on the jarl having certain voice types. (Weird, I know, but I suspect it was done to limit how many lines were assigned to different voice actors.) It looks to me like that would exclude Maven Black-Briar, meaning that if you've done the Civil War questline and installed Maven as jarl, the quest would only be available in Dawnstar. I don't think this would prevent the quest from running, but it might (like if there's some other condition I didn't spot that excludes their jarl), or it might make it very hard to get. There's also a limit of 12 days between iterations of this quest, but that should only apply if you've already gotten the quest before. So, to maximize your chances of getting it, I'd suggest waiting 12 days and then doing random quests over and over. Chances are that if you get the same random quest at least 3 times after that, you're probably never going to trigger A Jarl's Justice. If you did the Civil War in your current game, your only other option might be to start a new game and keep Laila, and see if you can get this quest to trigger that way.
