If an NPC's last name is Hlaalu, does it imply that he is a member of the House? For some reason, I thought it wasn't that unequivocal.  ~Shuryard (talk) 02:59, 8 May 2015 (GMT)

It could certainly be different for ESO, but in Morrowind having the last name Hlaalu didn't imply that you were in House Hlaalu. Looking at Hlaalu Ancestral Tomb, Eno Hlaalu and a few other less notable characters mentioned on the page are not (at least technically) members of House Hlaalu. I would say not. Being born into the "family" may grant you a direct position in the House if you want it, but it's quite possible for people to not take that up or to remove themselves from House politics. --Enodoc (talk) 10:01, 8 May 2015 (GMT)
I was thinking the same thing. This is also true for Telvanni, Redoran, Dres, etc. I don't think we should assume they are in the House. Jeancey (talk) 15:53, 8 May 2015 (GMT)
It appears that Hlaalu is the Dunmer equivalent of "Smith", and is a common surname. Matt Smith, the actor who was the Eleventh Doctor and James Smith the boxer have absolutely no relation to each other, and there are enough instances that the similar can be assumed about NPCs here. So, I think that without explicit reference to a Great House's other members or family, politics, etc, it's probably not necessarily accurate to assume "Here,'s a Hlaalu, they must be of the Great House Hlaalu", or Telvanni, Dres, Indoril, whatever. -damon  talkcontribs 21:08, 9 May 2015 (GMT)
