Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

As you head to Raincatcher Fields, Rajesh will run up to you, complaining about beetles. Speak to him to be directed to Overseer Jahi. Alternatively, you can begin the quest by finding Jahi near the road north of the johads and speaking to her directly.

Jahi will tell you that the johads, the reservoirs her family uses to supply water to Sentinel, are contaminated and attracting beetles. She'll complain about her lazy brother, Almur, and ask you to help her investigate the workers' rest camps for evidence of poison.

Head south into the fields where you will find an empty vial emanating green smoke near an Assassin Beetle and a tent. Taking the Strange Vial will cause Almur to appear. Speak to him to hear that he also wants to find the culprit and claims to have no idea how this happened. He suggests you perform a taste test at the three johads attracting the most beetles and compare the flavor to that of what's left in the vial. Visit the three johads marked on your map, walk into them, and examine them at their center poles.

Examining the three contaminated johads will show the following results:

<The water has a bitter flavor, not at all like what rainwater should taste like.>
<There's a visible tint of sickly green in the water, and the bitter taste is very strong.>
<The water tastes sweet, but still has the distinct smell that matches the contents of the bottle.>

Report back to Overseer Jahi at the main camp near the southeast johad. She recognized the bottle as one belonging to Ohama, Almur's wife and a Khajiit apothecary. She tells you to find Ohama in house nearby, caring for Almur and Jahi's father, Naseiran. If you speak to her again, she will tell you she thinks her father is too old to care for the johads and that her brother's proven ineptitude will leave it up to her, despite not really wanting the responsibility.

Cross the road to the east to reach Jahi's Home. Inside, you will find Naseiran on the bed and Ohama standing over him, caring for him. Ask her about the bottle, and she will admit it is hers. She claims it is a rare bug musk used in Bosmer cooking and that she thought she had lost it. She says she is innocent of the johad contamination but that it might be one of the workers. She suggests you buy a lizard to track the scent to the culprit.

Outside the house, you find Vena sitting against the steps up to the roof, her lizard Hiram on the grass nearby. She is a big fan of lizards and believes you feel the same way. She offers to sell you a lizard that has been trained to track scents. Alternatively, you can intimidate her into giving you the lizard.

After obtaining a scent tracking lizard, you can follow the lizard around as it runs about the camps. It will sniff at random workers. Some will think it is cute. Others, not so much.

Field Worker: "A friendly one, isn't it?"
Field Worker: "What an adorable lizard!"
Field Worker: "Lizard spit! Disgusting!"
Field Worker: "Come here, little one!"
Field Worker: Get off me, fool beast!" (Once, you find the scent)

Eventually the lizard will stop outside a tent, whereupon Fermouzh will intervene. He will ask you to hear him out along with Jahi, saying, "I'm tired of secrets." Follow him to Jahi's Home where she will be waiting outside. Ohama will also be there, pleading on her knees.

Speak to Fermouzh who will confess that the man who orchestrated all of this offered him gold to administer the poison to the johads. He didn't take the bribe, but some of the other workers did, although they swore they didn't realize the disaster it would cause. He says the man was hidden from view but was not a Khajiit. The payoff location was inside the house, so he suggests you search there. Jahi agrees to this plan but warns that if you find nothing, she will assume Ohama is lying and throw her and Almur out.

Go inside. There will be three objects marked for investigation.

Searching the Dresser, you will get:

<Ohama keeps her potions in this dresser. There are several broken bottles inside, as if someone was searching for something quickly and carelessly.>

Searching the Table, you will get:

<The leftover food smells of the same musk used in the johads.>

Searching the Bed, you will get:

<Jahi's father slept here just a little while ago. He's no longer in bed, but there's no signs of a struggle.>

Once you have searched all three spots, the objective will be complete and Almur will show up, indignant and seeking his father. Speak to him, and he will be worried that the culprit took Naseiran. He will suggest you follow the musk trail using your scent-tracking lizard while he and Jahi spread out to search.

When you leave the house, your lizard will appear and will immediately take off running west across the fields. Follow it until it reaches an abandoned camp near the southernmost johad. An injured Naseiran will appear, followed shortly by his children.

Naseiran: "Seems my secret is a secret no more."
<Almur and Jahi catch up to you.>
Almur: "Father? Are you all right?"
Naseiran: "Wasn't expecting to run into a beetle. It must have followed my scent."
Overseer Jahi: "You poisoned the johads? But why?"
<Naseiran collapses and Almur runs up to him.>
Almur: "Father! Your wound …."
Naseiran: "My last wish was for the johads to remain within the family, but … it caused nothing but strife."
<Jahi walks over to her family.>
Overseer Jahi: "No, you can't die! Not now!"
Naseiran: "Listen! I wish for your happiness. Promise me … the johads …."
Almur: "We will find happiness, Father! I swear to you."

Naseiran dies with Jahi and Almur kneeling over him. You can speak to each of the siblings to hear their points of view before determining who should take ownership of the johad business. If you give ownership of the johads to Jahi, she will resolve to keep the johads as her father wished, and she will accept her brother and his wife, wishing to mend the family and run the business together. If you give the ownership of the johads to Almur, he will plan to sell the business and buy a home in Sentinel for him, his wife, and his sister. Either way, they both seem fairly content in the end and on the road to mending their relationship.

Notes[edit]

  • Despite the water already appearing contaminated prior to starting the quest, the poison bottle itself only exists at the worker camp after starting the quest.
  • Fermouzh won't exist in the fields before starting the quest or reaching the related objective.
  • If you watch the final scene but exit the game before completing the quest and then return, Naseiran's body will be gone but his children will be standing there.

Quest Stages[edit]

Trouble at the Rain Catchers
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
Latest start Unless the rain catchers are reclaimed, Sentinel may experience a critical shortage of water. I should locate the person in charge - a woman named Jahi. She can tell me what is going on.
Objective: Talk to Overseer Jahi
Latest start The desert beetles have never been as aggressive as they are now. Unless the rain catchers are reclaimed, Sentinel may experience a critical shortage of water.
Jahi's asked me to investigate the johads for anything suspicious.
Objective: Investigate the Contaminated Johads
Objective Hint: I should search the worker camps for signs of foul play.
Hidden Objective: Search the Worker Camps
Objective Hint: Jahi's brother approached me when I found a suspicious bottle in one of the camps. I should hear what he has to say.
Hidden Objective: Talk to Almur
The johads all show signs of contamination. I should bring the bottle I found to Jahi and let her know what I've found.
Objective: Talk to Overseer Jahi
Jahi said the bottle may belong to Almur's wife, who is tending their father in the house near the johads. I should bring the bottle to her and see what she has to say.
Objective: Talk to Ohama
Ohama insists she had nothing to do with the johad's contamination. She believes one of the workers must have stolen the bottle from her.
Vena sells trained lizards. Ohama believes I could use one to find the culprit.
Objective: Buy a Lizard from Vena
Now that I have a trained lizard, I should bring it near workers about the camps and see if the lizard reacts. Once he does, I may need to subdue the culprit in order to get them to talk.
Objective: Find Who Stole the Vial
A worker named Fermouzh asked me to stop questioning the others and talk to him instead.
Objective: Talk to Fermouzh
According to Fermouzh, all the workers involved were paid off anonymously to contaminate the johads. The orders were dropped off in the house. I should search for any evidence of the identity of the culprit.
Objective: Search the House for Evidence
Jahi and Almur's father's gone missing from the house where Ohama was tending him. I should tell Almur what I've discovered.
Objective: Talk to Almur
Whoever took Almur's father must be responsible for the johad's contamination. I can use the lizard I bought previously to follow the culprit's trail and stop them for good.
Objective: Follow Naseiran's Trail
The only person I found at the end of the trail was the father himself. It seems he has some explaining to do.
Objective: Confront Naseiran
Naseiran, Jahi and Almur's father, was the one who contaminated the johads. With his death, it now falls to one of the [sic] them to determine the fate of the family business.
Objective: Decide Who Owns the Johads
Finishes quest☑ I've convinced the pair that Jahi should take responsibility for the johads after her father's death. I should find out what she has planned for the family business.
Objective: Talk to Jahi
Finishes quest☑ I've convinced the pair that Almur should take responsibility for the johads after his father's death. I should find out what he has planned for the family business.
Objective: Talk to Almur
