When you approach him, you will overhear a conversation between him and Captain Valec Doronil.

General Gavryn Redoran: "Don't be foolish, Captain. Boredom is the only danger these soldiers face."
Captain Valec Doronil: "General, we must enforce protocol. If—"
General Gavryn Redoran: "Enough! Not another word about protocol, Captain. Remember your place!"

When you approach him, he will notice you:

"You aren't one of my soldiers."

Speak with the irritable General:

"What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy?"
Are you the officer in charge?
"No matter how often I punish them, some of these soldiers must adhere to rules and regulations. Where's the fun in that, I ask you?
Since you're here, I think we have a Nord spy in the fort. Expose this spy and I'll make you a captain."
Aren't the Nords part of the Pact?
"That's what makes this spy so dangerous! And never question my orders again. Never! Go expose Ragna Stormcrag for the spy she is. I command it!
Now get out of here. I have things to do."
"Don't just stand there with your mouth open. You're attracting flies. Speak!"
General Gavryn Redoran? I was told to present myself to you.

Now get out of here, both of you. I have things to do."
All right. I'll look into it.

Speaking to him again:

"Why are you still here? You have a spy to expose!"

Checking in on Ragna Stormcrag, you will quickly see that she isn't a spy. Ragna will explain that the General Gavryn behavior has changed, becoming increasingly paranoid and she is worried. She asks that you find a way into his bedroom and investigate, as he has barred anyone from entering it. Once inside his bedroom, you find that nothing appears to have been used for weeks. You can then report your findings to Ragna.

What Lies Beneath[edit]

General Gavryn Redoran's skeleton

Ragna will ask you to investigate further, and you find your way into the Tal'Deic Crypts. When you find the General's retainer Durel Gilveni, he will reveal that he is Maulborn and that the real General Gavryn Redoran was sacrificed and General topside is actually a Daedric imposter.

Further into the crypts, you will find the skeletal remains of General Gavryn Redoran, the General Gavryn's Signet Ring proving his identity. However, examining the skeleton will throw you back with force and the fake General Gavryn Redoran will appear through the portal:

He attacks and during battle he'll taunt you:

General Gavryn Redoran: "You're stronger than these Maulborn idiots!"
General Gavryn Redoran: "Morrowind shall be laid waste! Vox will break this land!"

He will then shift into his true form as a Dremora Kynreeve:

General Gavryn Redoran: "Enough! I will drag you back to Oblivion with me!"

Once the imposter is dead, you can report back to Captain Valac Doronil and explain what happened.
