Is he human?[edit]

Here's a curiosity about the Gray Fox. When talking to many people you're given the option to ask them about the Gray Fox. Well, they all say the same thing. One of their stament is: "I don't even think he is human", or something like it, I don't quite remember now. Well, that's really funny, considering we have many other races in Oblivion, he does not need to be human, like we real people. He could be an orc, argonian, elf etc. All those races are not human. They could say: "I don't even think he's from this world" instead.

They mean "human" as mortal. They think he has been alive for 300+ years, after all. 207.81.78.84
Well, considering that 3 of the races are Elves, and Elves are usually immortal (or just live for several thousand years), an Elven Gray Fox technically could have lived for over 300 years. Felindre 03:19, 30 July 2008 (EDT)
Elves are not immortal. Their lifespan is about 1,000 years, but they also age. The Tsaesci, one of the four races of Akavir are immortal, but besides that I don't recall any other being (not including Gods/Daedra) being classified as immortal. — Unsigned comment by 87.110.44.73 (talk) on 8 May 2010
Apropos of nothing, Divayth Fyr in Morrowind is over 4,000 years old and he's a Dunmer. rpeh •TCE 05:56, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

I think the part about immortality should be corrected. The former grey fox mentions to the PC mentions that there have been several grey foxes before making the PC the new gray fox. In fact, the "grey fox" is just an ordinary person who happens to be wearing the mask. The article should make mention of this, if this is correct.

Anvil citizen ~spoiler~[edit]

to those of you who have played the quest-line know that he is in fact the stranger in anvil and also knowing that the people coming here to look up information do not care what is displays as him and the stranger as being two different NPCs but rather what it is in the game and thus I sugest that "Anvil Citizen" is added to his factions

The faction information is not just a cosmetic label added to the NPC. It's information from the construction set that controls how the NPC behaves, so altering that information introduces factual errors. If, for example, someone were to ask a question about why the Gray Fox attacked them for no reason, the first thing I would want to do is open this page and check the Gray Fox's factions to figure out what his default disposition is towards other characters. If the information displayed here is not an accurate copy of the construction set statistics, then checking this page for that information is worthless.
This is also a question that has come up with almost all the Dark Brotherhood members (see Oblivion Talk:Dark Brotherhood#Members Section) because the developers did a lot of very strange things with the Dark Brotherhood faction (actually multiple factions). At some point all of the Dark Brotherhood NPC pages are going to have to be revised somehow, because editors have modified all of that faction information, too. I'm starting to wonder whether adding faction information and guild ranks to the NPC pages was more trouble than it's worth, if it's going to cause this much of a fuss just to even figure out what the facts are about each NPC's factions.
In my opinion, the faction information in the infobox should be an exact duplicate of the information in the construction set. If there are complications with the faction information, then those complications should be explained in the NPC's notes. If people have major issues with the construction set faction information, I'd rather have the entire faction box emptied and replaced with something like "See notes for information" than have incorrect facts added to the infobox. --NepheleTalk 11:54, 5 July 2007 (EDT)

Gray Fox's Class[edit]

For us 360 users, or people who don't have access to the construction set, what are the Major Attributes and Major Skills of the Gray Fox? Does he have a special class for himself, or does he just use the generic "Theif" Class?

If you study the page it says "Class: Gray Fox" he is his own. Since I am also a 360 user, I do not know what his major skills are. Good Luck on finding out. --Playjex 23:23, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
His class is called 'Gray Fox'.
  • The class's primary attributes are Personality and Agility, while it's specialization is Stealth. Major skills are Alteration, Illusion, Blade, Sneak, Light Armour, Mercantile and Speechcraft.
  • The Gray Fox's attributes are as follows: Str 95, Int 63, Wil 85, Agi 90, Spd 95, End 63, Luc 50, HP 235, Magicka 157, Fatigue 333.
  • He possesses a novice level targeted shock damage spell (Spark). Apprentice level shield spell (Defend), an apprentice level shock shield spell (Electric Shell), an apprentice level water walking spell (Sea Stride), an apprentice chameleon spell (Shadow) and an apprentice silence spell (Silence). He also possesses a custom invisibility lesser power (TGGrayCowlInvisibility).
--Saruuk 23:44, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
His class is also summarized with all of the other NPC Classes. --NepheleTalk 01:10, 11 August 2007 (EDT)
Hmm, that looks simpler than scrambling back and forth through the CS. Thanks for that. =) --Saruuk 01:18, 11 August 2007 (EDT)

Edit[edit]

I have added a bit of info linking the stranger and the Grey Fox. I saw on the "A stranger" talk page that it wasn't to be added there to avoid spoilers, but I think its fine to add it here.— Unsigned comment by Forlornhope (talkcontribs)

I'm going to go ahead and remove the information, as it actually is just as much of a spoiler here as on the other page. Players will have heard of the Gray Fox before "A Stranger" and are very likely to visit this page first, thereby making the extra bit of information a spoiler for further quests. --Eshe 14:09, 7 September 2007 (EDT)
I guess but there there's fact that if somebody looked him up on the wiki they would want to know who he is so in that case doesn't it make sense to have the information there? I mean its the users choice to look him up. I could be wrong tho this is my first edit on this truly amazing site. --Forlornhope
Well, following the existing Corvus Umbranox link (which is kind of a spoiler in itself, though probably less so) leads you to information about his identity as "A Stranger," so I think that's really sufficient. You do have a point though, it is the user's choice to go looking for information, but I think it's worth our time to avoid unnecessary spoilers just in case. --Eshe 02:17, 8 September 2007 (EDT)

Remove the Construction Set render?[edit]

On the bottom of the page there is an image of the Gray Fox taken from the Construction Set. I propose to delete this image as this is abundant now that there is an ingame screenshot of the Gray Fox. The Construction Set does not make detailed renders of characters and thus the result looks pixelated. --Timenn 15:36, 7 September 2007 (EDT)

I agree, Timenn. It's out of place now the images have been updated. --RpehTalk 17:41, 7 September 2007 (EDT)
Agreed. Deleted :) --NepheleTalk 03:07, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Enchanted armor[edit]

Its written on the generic magic apparel page that he has some enchanted armor can you get it when you become the gray fox? 24.23.230.168

Nope. You just get the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal. –RpehTCE 06:00, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
You can steal it from him while hes sitting on the bench in Anvil Castle as A Stranger, only after you stole the elder scroll, though.--TrUeSnIpE Z 17:40, 5 July 2008 (EDT)

Gray Fox Screenshot[edit]

Should we change the image of the Gray Fox in the main article? I noticed that the quality is a bit low. Here's a screenshot of the Gray Fox, just in case. [1] — Unsigned comment by 202.8.253.140 (talk) on 18 January 2009

We can't take images without knowing their provenance. –RpehTCE 03:35, 18 January 2009 (EST)
I took the screenshot myself, if that's what you mean. :) — Unsigned comment by 202.8.253.140 (talk) on 18 January 2009

strange door[edit]

There is a door in dareloths house that does not open, what is its purpose? by the way is it possibly to pick up gray fox wanted posters? — Unsigned comment by TheElderScribe (talkcontribs) on 10 January 2010

It's a door that is locked every time the cell resets. This means you can practice your lockpicking on that door.
It's not possible to pick up the wanted posters. --Timenn-<talk> 10:10, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
I think he means the main one going out onto the street facing the Lighthouse--Corevette789 20:01, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
That door would lead to the boarded up entrance in the Waterfront, as quoted from here:There is a third door, that cannot be opened, which corresponds to the boarded up entrance on the other side of the Waterfront. --S'drassa T2M 20:12, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah, thanks. I fell kinda stupid for asking that now :D — Unsigned comment by TheElderScribe (talkcontribs) on 31 January 2010

Can't fast Travel??[edit]

I just recently ran into a huge problem while wearing the Cowl and wanted to inform others. As I was running through the towns I was killing guards for fun, and upgrades. Anyway I knocked one of the guards unconscience and didn't realize it. Afterwards, I ran into the forest nearby and realized I was unable to fast travel. After a long time trying to fix it I realized what I must have done and had to run back to the town, which was Chorrol, and find the guard so I could yield to him and the "Can't fast travel while guards are persuing" would go away. Hope this helps anyone in the same sort of situation. — Unsigned comment by 208.72.131.10 (talk) on 18 January 2010

Voice actor?[edit]

Wes Johnson plays the Gray Fox, right...? I've heard he does, but this is from wikipedia so I can't be completely sure. I looked at the voice actors, but it didn't mention he played Lucien Lachance either. Can somebody please tell me whether or not he plays Lucien and the Gray Fox, and if not their respective voice actors?24.181.62.15 20:35, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure Wes Johnson voices ALL the male imperials (apart from Martin and Uriel Septim). The notes about them being voiced by him seem obsolete to me. ~ Dwarfmp 23:37, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Oh...ok then. Thank you! 24.181.62.15 23:53, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Gray Fox > Stranger[edit]

The Stranger is the Gray Fox? — Unsigned comment by 189.180.13.134 (talk)

Yes, pretty obvious, btw I think you meant to put the section title as Gray Fox = Stranger. Alpha Kenny Buddy 20:53, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Getting contacted by Gray Fox[edit]

Hello,

I just wanted to say i Had trouble meeting with the contacta Gray Fox sends to meet with you. They say to go in the Imperial city, but I found this was useless. It's pretty frustrating to be searching for the ones supposed to find you right ?

Well I found out if you get arrested and Pay your fine, the contact is always waiting for you at the exit of the castle. Of course you still need to have sold enough stolen goods.

I thought you might add this in the Gray Fox quests because I personnaly wasted quite sometimes trying to find them in the imperial city.

You are supposed to wait, not look for them. They'll come to you on there own will, without the jail time mind you. --AKB Talk 05:21, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Stealing from the Gray Fox[edit]

I thought this was hilarious. I just finished telling the Gray Fox about my Ultimate Heist. After he gave me the ring to give to Lady Umbranox, I accidentally stole something from his table. He immediately yelled, "THIEF!" and a guard came and arrested me! Is this the definition of irony? Hyzakyt 01:14, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Box me on the ears for another necro, but on just entering Malintus Ancrus' house in order to discuss the Arrow of Extrication, I decided to assume sneak stance in order to get a gander of the inventory of the masked Vulpine. Didn't remove anything, but got a "Help! Stop, Thief" when exiting inventory. No guard appeared, but on resuming dialogue with the GF, he uttered a very engaging "Hello." The newly highlighted dialogue option was "Cast Out of the Thieves Guild," but the GFs response to that was "I heard about what you did...."--Lmstearn (talk) 09:59, 5 October 2014 (GMT)

Beta Cowl of Nocturnal?[edit]

I was looking through the Oblivion Official Guide today, and saw what an image of what I think is a beta Gray Cowl. (Page 169) It looks a little bit like a regular hat with another little part covering the eyes. The Daedric writing is missing too. Here is a link to the image (quite bad quality) unledsci.png

But can anyone tell me what the deal is with it? Any help is appreciated. Etem 15:46, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Beggars[edit]

Does he only care about the IC Beggars rather than the other ones like in Chorrol? — Unsigned comment by 50.71.135.146 (talk) at 03:34 on 30 September 2011 (UTC)

This question is hardly related to Oblivion itself, more of a lore type of question... He's supposed to "care" about all the beggars, or actually all poor people ~ Dwarfmp 05:18, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

When he is the Count again...[edit]

Can you kill him when he is the Count to get his magical armor? — Unsigned comment by 50.71.135.146 (talk) at 21:34 on 21 October 2011 (UTC)

You can kill the Count, but that is in fact a different NPC, so he wouldn't have the Gray Fox armor on him ~ Dwarfmp 05:18, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Wording of sentance[edit]

This might be just me, but from reading this sentence "That is everyone but a single fellow thief who goes around known only as the Stranger, who instead comments that he is said to be the one responsible for the theft of the Gray Cowl, his most significant feature, from the Daedra Lord Nocturnal." I read the sentence as saying that the stranger had stolen the Cowl FOR The Grey Fox. Haven't changed it cause it could just be me, but just want to bring it up in case anyone else thinks it should be reworded (not that doing so would be a hard task....) G-Rath 05:12, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Name?[edit]

He says that he has already named himself twice when you speak to him about the Cowl. Does he actually? Given that all the names in Oblivion are not typical names (as in they are not ones we use in the real world), I am fairly certain I would have remember his name had he said it. And if he does say it, is it the same as later on? 24.87.104.28 04:21, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

He's making the point that his name is impossible to remember. Gameplay mechanics means he doesn't actually name himself, as that would defeat the purpose. And yes it is the same as later. The Silencer has spokenTalk 07:52, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Collecting Money[edit]

Can you collect money monthly as the gray fox? if so, who do you talk to?

Idea Behind the Gray Fox[edit]

I saw a movie recently called The Court Jester (1955 starring Danny Kaye), where there is a main character (sort of) named the Black Fox. The Fox is a vigilante Robbin Hood-like character who wears a black cowl/mask, and whoever puts on the costume "becomes" the Fox (for the purpose of evading the law and to add to the mystery of the Fox). I was curious as to whether or not the idea for the Gray Fox came from this classic film character. Thoughts? — Unsigned comment by 130.49.6.177 (talk) at 10:56 on 14 February 2013

The fox is often a representation of a cunning person, like a thief. In the disney animated version of robin hood, where all the characters are animals, Robin Hood is depicted as a fox. It is a common representation, and I don't think there is any specific reference here. Jeancey (talk) 18:07, 14 February 2013 (GMT)
