NPC Sundamage[edit]

I'm just wondering if it's worth pointing out here that NPC Vampires do not take Sun Damage? I've already got it as a note in my sample Vampire NPC page. The Article does say 'This effect is most familiar to Vampires, for whom it is one of the most significant drawbacks of vampirism', however it IS pretty obvious that it's referring to Player Vampires when it speaks of a draw back, however it is possible that readers may see that as a weakness for NPC Vampires. If it's needed, it's no problem for me to add it, but wasn't sure where it would be more appropriate Aensland 16:39, 20 August 2008 (EDT)

They do take sun damage, its just a one time thing though, its not like the player who takes damage from it constantly. Chibiace 16:47, 20 August 2008 (EDT)
I haven't tested it, but I thought vampires took continual sun damage? They certainly have the "Vampirism100" ability, which includes 8 points of sun damage. –RpehTCE 01:30, 21 August 2008 (EDT)
I tested it myself, using GetAV Health, and it seems to cause a very minor amount of health damage (less than 0.1, at least in my tests), before apparently undoing itself (i.e, the number went up again); this would seem to be consistant with Chibicane's suggestion that they take it only one time, rather than continually. I see what you mean. Very odd. They have an active effect of Sun Damage 8 points, but it does do them any damage. That could charitably be described as a bug. –RpehTCE 06:43, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

Ah, this seems contrary to my experiences. I have killed Vampires by luring them into the sunlight and letting that finish them off.

  • I have the hands of midnight and as soon as I put them on my health goes to nearly zero, if hands of midnight is 30 points of sun damage does that meen with 100 vampire I take 4 times less damage?

Ref ID[edit]

What is the Ref ID for sun damage on a 100% vampire? I want to remove sun damage from my char. but I don't want to filter through the list given in the console command tutorial. — Unsigned comment by June 2009 (talkcontribs)

It doesn't work that way. Sun damage is a magic effect, not a spell. Vampire sun damage is one of the effects of the vampirism50, vampirism75, and vampirism100 abilities that you get at the different stages of vampirism. To remove sun damage from vampires you would need to create a mod in the CS that removes the sun damage effect from those abilities. Phaid 14:28, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Spell making[edit]

you can activate the spell for spell making in the TES (the editor). Open the magic effects, select "sun damage," check "spell making" box. Save as a plugin, load it through Oblivion mod manager. Beware that using custom sun damage spells is considered cheating, as no enemy has immunity to it, so it would be a very powerful spell. WRFan 23:11, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

It is not possible to make a Sun Damage spell that can be used on anyone besides "self", even in the construction set. The method described by WRFan will only allow you to make spells that you can cast on yourself. If there is a way to tick those flags, someone please tell me. 04:19, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Sun Damage spell resistance[edit]

When your a vampire (i dont want to be on yet) the sun damage effect is in active effects page if you use a 100% magic resistance spell or use clothes with magic resistance would it resist the sun damage?--VergilSparda 19:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The question above specifies Magic Resistance. I'm just thinking the obvious out loud here, but Sun Damage is not the same as Fire Damage, right? Similarly, there is a Resist Fire, but there is no Resist Sun Damage effect? Hyzakyt 01:33, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Sun Damage formula[edit]

A constant Restore Health spell with a magnitude of 16 points per second will counter the effects of sun damage completely, for any vampire level, at any time of the day. Since 100% Vampirism gives the player an 8 point sun damage penalty, it can be assumed that during the sun zenith the actual sun damage dealt is x2 multiplier of the penalty.

I think it would be more useful to provide a formula to calculate the total damage done at specific times of the day. This note would indicate that the maximum factor is 2 (and the minimum is 0). --Timenn-<talk> 08:58, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
A "constant Restore Health spell" is contradictory in and of itself. The perpetual use of such a spell would certainly not be beneficial to a magicka-oriented character, as they usually rely on their magicka for offensive attacks. Characters that aren't magicka-oriented could hardly bother with this either. Given that the programmers intentionally left out restore health for enchantments; I believe an effective way to combat the sun-damage is with a MOD to enchant a ring with a constant of 16 points Restore Health per second. 03:06, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Weakness to Magic and Time of Day[edit]

I noticed that my 100% vampire, apprentice birthsign character was taking far more sun damage than 8 HP/second while he was outside because my normal healing spell (20HP/sec for 10 seconds) was barely healing me at all overall. I could think of two possible reasons for this: first that the damage is affected by Weakness to Magic, second that it is actually increased from the base value around midday (whereas I had thought that it was just decreased from the base value in the early morning and evening). So I did some experiments.

Basically what I did was stay in a building of the Arcane University at noon or so and wait 24 hour periods until I had a sunny day, then step outside for approximate 10 second intervals (timed by my watch). In every single test I took 160 or so, rather than the 80 or so that I would have taken if the sun damage was actually 8 per second. So this proved that I was indeed taking about double the damage I should have been.

Next I tested whether this was a result of my character's 100% Weakness to Magic. If the sun damage was implemented as a spell I would always take double the base damage, which would explain the 16 per second just as well as the base sun damage being doubled in the brightest part of the day. So what I did was repeat the last set of trials, but this time I gave myself a total of 200% weakness to magic first. Once again I took about 160 damage every time. I then tried it again with 100% resistance to magic and 100% resistance to fire and 85% shield just to be absolutely sure. The results are quite clear, I always took about 160 damage over the 10 seconds.

So, there is no way to mitigate sun damage with resistance effects or increase it with weaknesses that I can find. Further, it's pretty clear that the value of Sun Damage given is actually half of what one takes around midday. I think that ought to be mentioned both here and in the Vampirism page and I'll do some more experiments and try to figure out how much damage I take at different times or in different weather conditions. -- 14:31, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Countering sun damage?[edit]

Is there any way at all of countering sun damage for vampires? Such as giving yourself a -8 sun damage attribute? -- 19:47, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

To my knowledge that isn't possible. Returning to 25% Vampirism is the only way to stop Sun Damage from occuring. Being underwater and under the cover of clouds does help somewhat, though. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 16:39, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Well if you have a lot of magicka and a high restoration skill, then you can heal as fast as you take damage but its only useful if are in the open and need time to find a cave or building. 16:10, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

i want 2 keep my vampire powers[edit]

but the sun damadge is a huge burden i have this great game 4 360 and is their anyway 2 get rid of the sun damage because with sundamadge you cant fastravel or wait because it wont let u fast travel and if u wait u die please help me.

As mentioned here, you'll need to return to 25% vampirism. You will lose several bonuses if you do that though, it's up to you to weigh the pros and cons. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 21:48, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

u can also just wait until it's dark (8pm) and travel between safe of sun places like caves or inns if ur trip is too long to make it by sun rise (6am) and fight and such only at night --- i as a vampire find it easy.... what's worse about being a vampire is that u can't simply enter ppl's houses during night cuz it's a crime and ppl will fear u and won't talk with u... my solution to the second problem is simple - use vampire seduction (+ additional charm spells if that's not enough). as for the first problem... wait somewhere where it's dark and being there isn't a crime and asap rush towards them and use potions and healing spells while going - not the best solution but it's the best i could think of - if any1 has a better one pls suggest

I have discovered something very odd.[edit]

I have several different-gender characters and I consistently find that the female characters take less sun damage as vampires than the male characters. Has anyone else come across this? I tested this properly and found that the male characters take the normal sun damage as dictated by the sun damage formula. The female characters, however, take exactly half the sun damage of the male characters at noon (i.e 8 points of sun damage per second at 100% vampirism). At dawn and dusk, they take exactly 4 points of sun damage per second. I hsve tested this using a stopwatch to time for exactly 10 seconds. When I check the sun damage effects at these times, the sun damage is not represented as the number 8. Instead, it says "8/2". I'm not sure if this is a bug or whether it simply a glitch that I got in my copy of the game, but it consistent no matter what level I am for my characters. I believe it could be a glitch created by my repeated console commands (one time every item pertaining to the Shivering Isles became giant yellow exclamation marks and the NPC's at Strange door were stuck and couldn't talk. At this point I had to reinstall the expansion pack to fix the problem).

removing the harmful effects of being a vampire "console cammands"[edit]

I was able to get rid of the weakness to fire, sun damage and "vampirism" effects while keeping my vampire abilities aka my new found resistances, all the stuff that got fortified and my vampire touch spell by typing

player->removespell "vampire sun damage"

but it basically cured me, so I lost my awesome creepy eyes, and I couldn't get any vampire quests, if I didn't set my personality to 9999 I prolly would have gotten attacked as well :)

Now, if you accept a vampire quest before you remove sun damage, you can finish that quest but you're still not a vampire, and you can't get anymore vampire quests, and you lose the ability to use any vampire services even if you earned that right, before using the code


The hours seem off[edit]

I'm playing a vampire right now and the hours for sun damage seem off. Damage is starting right after 5AM and continues until well after 9PM (9:36 as best as I can tell). Is something wrong or does it vary or something? -- 19:31, 7 October 2014 (GMT)
